This is one of my favorite childrens books. I am studying to be a teacher and want to find this book to use in my classroom. I still have my own original copy but would purchase as many as I could get my hands on for my future children. What a great lesson for young readers.

This is one of my all-time favorite stories!! Now that I have a son of my own, I went looking for this book so I could share it with him. Too bad Amazon doesn't have it, but I did find a copy on EBay. It was first published in 1964, so not too suprising that Amazon doesn't carry it.

My favorite children's book of all time!

I could cry that this book is out of print, but hopefully those Amazon folk will be wiley enough to find me a used copy. Some of my earliest memories are of paging through this book before I learned to read. The jewel-like colors used in the illustrations to this day are intensely nostalgic for me, and the whole feel of the pictures and story are of calm, warm, and glowing dusk - a father talking to his son before bedtime in a cozy, shadowy room.

I wish that amazon could get this book in somehow. What a great book for little ones! It tells the story about a boy about to go to bed and he's sitting there with his dad telling him what a bad horse Alexander was that day. Alexander wears red and green striped pajamas and was just a terrible horse. Everything from knocking off a jar of peaches in the grocery store, to not tying his shoelaces are just some of the things that the horse decided not to do. Actually, the story is about the little boy Chris who was bad that day and was blaming it on his make-believe horse. The illustrations are just great and really add to the fun. What a great book for your little one if you can find it. It's a true treasure indeed.

I was so pleased to find this book for my grandsons as I remember it from when their father was a little boy and we loved it. As it is now out of print, it was a find. It arrived quickly and in great condition and I've already read it to my older grandson.

The illustrations in this story are what make it so memorable. The simple line pictures help to make the text of the story tangible. Even after thirty years, I instantly recognized the cover of this book as one of my favorites as a child.

Ms. Green passes on a playful "immigrant's" story that I hope your children will cherish as much as I did.

This is out-of-print, but try to pick one up used via Amazon!

A reference book that every beader should have. The book is well laid out and the subject information is easily accessible.

Ornate Designs
Helpful Votes: 25 out of 27 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-30
Seed Bead Savvy presents simple and sophisticated designs with full color photography, clear illustrations and detailed editorial-tested instructions. Seed beads are tiny beads or building blocks of jewelry design, but in this book they create stunning designs with ornate elements.

If you can't walk past a bead store without going in and buying more beads, then this book is a must-have for your collection. Whether you are just starting to make jewelry or are looking for a new fascinating design, this book has something for every level of expertise, but seems to focus more on artistic interpretations and more complex items like fringed collars.

The first chapter explores the basic types of seed beads and then shows the materials and tools you need for the specific beads you will be using.

A few of the intriguing designs include:

Reading a Pattern - Ideas for reading a geometric tapestry pattern to make a decorative wall hanging with seed beads. The results have an added shimmer effect that you wouldn't achieve with cross-stitch patterns. The Embroidered portrait gives detailed information on how to create your own pattern from a picture or photograph.

Woven Pendant - A loomed pendant with a fringe. Looks very exotic!

Wildflower Purse - Beautiful design for a tiny purse with fringe

Ecuadorian Lace Collar - A gorgeous exotic gold necklace.

Herringbone Collar - An elegant choker with seed beads and pearls. Fancier than just a string of pearls and the colors they use would make this perfect for the holiday season. You could make earrings and a bracelet to match, although patterns are not included for specific matching items.

This would make a perfect gift for anyone who loves beading because there are detailed instructions for basic designs at the start, a few patterns for easy necklaces and then challenges to look forward to when you master the basic techniques.

I bought this for the beadweaving patterns so was disappointed to discover that there were stringing and other types as well. But on the plus side, I benefitted from the intro material on the seed beads with an excellent page of photos which include bugles and lots of other beads plus another page describing them. Most of the patterns did appear in Bead and Button but still it's nice to have this collection to work from as it's hard to check back through all my issues. First four items are strung. Two loomwork patterns follow. Amulet bag in peyote, bead embroidered portrait, square stitch necklace, another bead stringing, floral centerpiece, fringed collar and 17 more beadweaving patterns. Some are bracelets, some necklaces and one pair of earrings. The choices are good and I plan on making several of them.

This is an excellent collection from Bead and Button magazine. The photos are clear. There is a 'shopping list' for each project and well written directions. Even though I have subcribed to Bead and Button for several years, this is a great collection of seed bead projects.I appreciate the variety of projects. Now I don't have to dig through piles of magazines to find a cool project.

Any library strong in jewelry-making references will find this a fine addition.

The Best of Bead&Button Magazine: Seed Bead Savvy covers the tiny seed beads that play a big part in beaded jewelry making. They can be used in conjunction with an overall design with other beads or can stand alone as their own creations: this book shows how, from locating seed beads which are perfect for a project to stringing and blending colors. Any library strong in jewelry-making references will find this a fine addition.

"The Best of Pif Magazine Off-Line" offers a refreshing assortment of new stories and new voices. A standout among them is Mimi Carmen's "Love Birds". Ms. Carmen's tale of an aging mother and conflicted daughter resonates with idiosyncratic vision and gritty passion. The bird imagery is breathtaking. I also very much enjoyed "23 Johnson Avenue, 1985" by Diann Blakely. If writers were race horses, and I had money, I'd bet my wad on these two.

I am bored with many print magazines nowadays. The same things, the same things. Ho-hum. I've been following this zine for a while now, open it every month with relish. They've definitely picked a lot of their best, and Camille Renshaw's intro says a lot about WHY I don't like other magazines. Here is something worth a read, something that will make you want to get everything the magazine has put out since the beginning. There's even a rationale for professional wrestling, something that wants me to buy a tape of the event with the Undertaker/Mankind Hell in the Cell match, and I NEVER watch that stuff! You should definitely have this on your shelf--impress your friends with how in the know you are.

Collection includes Rick Moody, Richard Weems, Ricki Garni, David Ryan, Aimee Bender, Ken Kalfus, Rachel Barenblat, Tami Haaland - both old and new writers are outstanding! Includes fiction, essays, poetry, and interviews. I first read about Pif in Yahoo!'s print magazine - its Web site got a great write-up - and I'm thrilled to have found them.

Although the first sentence of the intro reads, "I hate everything in print," it's clear Pif's out to make it in both worlds.

Priceless Legacy
Helpful Votes: 107 out of 107 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-21
In his introduction the author refers to the contents of the Better Eyesight magazines as a treasure chest. Actually this compilation is priceless! It is chock-full of absorbing information ---articles by Dr. Bates, case studies and many testimonials from people of all ages and all walks of life --- covering supposedly irreversible conditions such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, cataracts, glaucoma and many more. If you are not amazed by what you read in at least one case history, then you'd better have someone check you for a pulse. The book also confirms that Dr. Bates' teachings had nothing to do with eye aerobics and everything to do with relearning how to RELAX the mind and the eyes for better vision and improved overall health.

Even though I'm not a novice at natural vision improvement (see Relearning to See review), this book has greatly inspired me. The moment I began reading Better Eyesight, it was like stepping back in time to get personal advice from Dr. Bates in his clinic. It was also uncanny to read many unique observations so similar to my eye re-education experiences. I'm on the homeward stretch of my 20/20 goal (or keener!) and Better Eyesight has bolstered my motivation. It's helped remind me to quickly recognize and correct myself when I lapse into poor vision habits and my progress has surged.

Dr. Bates humbly stated that he had no external cure to improve eyesight. It was nature's way of healing and he cited cases where people improved their vision with no knowledge of his teachings. (I know of two adults who hated their prescribed glasses as kids, quit wearing them, and their sight returned to normal.) However Dr. Bates found that most people, especially those who'd worn lenses for any length of time, needed to relearn the relaxed use of their eyes to have any chance of reversing locked-in strain and blur.

Dr. Bates appeared to have high scientific principles, yet knew the limitations of science and the dangers of submissive adherence to authoritative dogma. He once believed the orthodox teachings and it took him many years to reconcile their errors to his satisfaction. His findings were well documented and published in the medical journals and scientific literature of the day and apparently went unchallenged. Instead Dr. Bates was ostracized and ridiculed in such a bigoted and arrogant manner. He seemed to take it all in stride with a sense of humor by interspersing his wit in many articles squarely aimed at the nay-sayers.

Better Eyesight also gives glimpses of Dr. Bates beyond the eye clinic. His ethics, values and philosophy towards industrialization, mass-education and modern medicine closely parallel views of more contemporary social critics such as author Ivan Illich. In Limits to Medicine --- Medical Nemesis, Illich provides a definition from a medical dictionary of iatrogenic conditions or disorders. In essence, they are those caused by medical intervention. Progressive myopia has to be the granddaddy of all iatrogenic disorders, mainly due to the prescribing of full-power compensating lenses, and not the genetic disorder falsely invented.

Another interesting facet of Dr. Bates was his discovery of adrenaline, now a household word when we hear overpaid professional athletes on TV talk about their adrenaline rush. Yet sadly the benevolent work of improving vision naturally for which Dr. Bates dedicated his life is so little known and has been so grossly maligned. Thankfully his teaching methods and writings were preserved and have been edited and annotated by the author in this legacy. Hopefully it will help set the record straight and give Dr. Bates more widespread recognition that's long overdue.

Maybe some future day when these teachings become mainstream principles a museum will house a chamber of horrors displaying artifacts of the iatrogenic era. Animated lifelike figures in a "Blind Faith" section could depict people straining to see through Coke-bottle glasses, poking bloodshot eyes to insert contact lenses and having corneas burned by lasers. Aghast parents will be at a loss to explain to their children how so many people willingly paid to be maltreated in the name of progress.

I am amazed by how much this book has helped me. Bates' principles really do work! I have only been reading the book for about a month, yet my eyesight is improving. I can't wait until my next eye appointment so I can surprise my ophthamologist (who gave me stronger glasses at my last eye exam -- they are now too strong for me to wear!).

This books is more easier to understand then the other book by Thomas Quackenbush. This book is more practical in that it explains the principles of better eyesight and how to improve on it. The Relearning to See book is great but it's more of a scientific academic fact kind of book. This book is more motivating as it gives case studies and proof that the method works. You can't get this priceless information anywhere else. It is my opinion that this book is the best book out there on natural improvements of eyesight. If you have only one book to choose for eyesight. Get this one. It's a legend in it's own right.

William Bates was a scientist, researcher, visionary, and a rebel. In his magazines are presented a multitude of case histories about his patients. We get to hear the stories of a wide variety of individuals, their temperaments, and what techniques worked for them. The style is dated, but the essence of his teachings are timeless.
An invaluable resource in your 'vision' library. It's large, but can be digested in bite size articles. A wonderful collection.

Books were great friends for a young child growing up in Nairobi, Kenya. My mother and father took us to the library at the university every month and thats where I found this book. I loved it and I have told the story over and over to the countless children I have babysat and watched over the years. Now I have a child and i want to share the joy that this book brought to my life so that one day she can kiss me and make me "Queen of the Blahs" too! Great Book!

When I was growing up we spent every summer renting out my great aunt and uncles beach house in Maine. They had lots of books there but my brothers and my favorite was The Blah. Every summer we looked forward to hearing the story over and over again, it never got old, until one summer The Blah was gone. I guess someone loved it as much as we did and decided to take it home. My mother bought this book for me over twenty five years ago. I still own the original copy, though it is dog-eared, artistically marked with Crayolas, and gingerly held together by copious amounts of Scotch tape. I treasure this book because the message is universal and timeless: At times, we all feel unappreciated, overlooked, drab, blah-like. My mother, a single parent who worked her fingers to the bones, was often too tired to engage in the activities many stay-at-home Mom's engaged in with their children. I often felt overlooked in the hustle and bustle, daily scramble that was her life. She was aware of this and gave me THE BLAH By Jack Kent. The Blah tells the story of one little boy who feels terribly Blah like. His older brother, in a hurry and not paying attention, crushed his favorite crayon. His mother, distracted with her many motherly and domestic tasks, doesn't really listen to him. So, he draws pictures that tell the story of a group of beings called "Blah's". There is a King of The Blah's, an Awful Jostler who breaks crayons. It's a darling story and ends on a very loving and happy note. I know this book is hard to come by but it is a wonderful book for anyone child, especially those children who have single parents, super-mom's, or full-time working parents.

The book BUBBLE BUBBLE was a great book for children. This book helps the young childs mind grow and expand with every thought of our little main character. Also the child can relate to what the little boy is doing. All little kids have played with bubbles before and have imagined that it was some weird shape or animal. What can i say... children are our future and the more they imagine the more new things we will think of. And to think it could all start with a Bubble...

This book was a childish tale.

This book was quicker than the blink of an eye. It started and then it ended so rapidly. It had no real story line. Nothing to really fall back on. It was just about this little boy blowing bubbles. How many times have we seen people blowing bubbles. Mercer Mayer always seems to have a goofy childish story. If only he could write stories that people could follow.

This book was bought for my daughter when she was a year old, book never left her side. Now my son is 2 years old and "DITTO" loves the book. It is an excellent learning book and the children use their imagination by looking at the bubbles, very easy for a child to learn to read and they understand it. Would really like to see it republished so I can purchase a new one - old one is on its last leg.

The Druuna books are erotic horror fantasies, it's that simple. Yes, they are unapologetically violent and exploitive towards our main character, Druuna, but if that turns you off, then don't buy the books. What makes Druuna's adventures so lovely to me is that her figure is in now way like a small child, which seems to be all the rage today. Admittedly her proportions are a little . .. how shall I say? Heroic! Yes, that's it. She's an erotic protagonist of heroic proportions. Oh, and the plot is only "so so" as mostly it's a vehicle to put Druuna into even more strange encounters of the naked kind.

This continues the dream-like story around Druuna, the delectable figure in the cover drawing. She continues to fight her way through an shifting sequence of characters and nightmare settings. Druuna barely stay one step ahead of the shape-changing invasion or infestation of - well, it's never quite clear what.

"Barely" describes her adventures in another way, too. Her outfit, when present at all, consists of a thong and a cropped top barely covering her cantilevered curves. She doesn't hold on to even that little, though. Her sexual encounters, the ones that seemed inevitable from the start, leave her dressed only in her beauty. These encotuners won't suit all tastes, since at least one is quite non-consensual and has some disturbing elements.

But, this was never for kids in the first place. Serpieri's lush drawing carries this story. That's good because the plot certainly doesn't - it jumps and shifts with reasons that never become apparent. Still, Serpieri gives the reader enough to create a story line of a sort, and Druuna's womanly attraction was the real point all along.

This is the third episode of the saga describing the trips, travails, and tribulations of Druuna, Serpieri's yummy heroine. There are actually two more episodes following Carnivora (Madragora and Aphrodisia) which I bought in the French version. The sci-fi plot is somewhat muddy and the references to AIDS (mutants, etc.) are transparent, but the real attraction is Druuna. She's always in mortal danger but never really afraid. Her healthy libido lets her ride the roughest carnal encounters with little damage and provides her with much pleasure when involved with "normal" humans. It's obvious that Serpieri is focused on showing off her backside, but hey, who's complaining? This is an album to be savored slowly. One will not only enjoy Druuna in her glorious nakedness, but also the rich, complex graphics for which Serpieri has become a BD (French for comics) master.

amazing story, amazing heroine

This is actually the 4th book of the series, preceded by Morbis Gravis 1 and 2 as well as Creatura. The art is top notch, which is true of each installment. The story is more complex than most comics, never using a tagged "meanwhile" approach to scene changes, favoring a more cinematic method of simply letting the story unfold, and those who trust it and follow along even while things seem contradictory or non-sensical, will be very pleased by the end. The sex is hot and the action is great. A very good buy within the series or as a standalone. A warning to the viewer, however... don't plan of purchasing just one... after owning this book, you'll HAVE to buy the remaining ones. INCREDIBLE!

Serpieri is the best! One of the few erotic comics with taste and artistic sense. And incredibly horny ofcourse. It's a pity that the publisher pushes Serpieri to censorship. It shouldn't have to be incomplete and seperately collected in an uncensored album like druuna X and X2. A little more broadmindedness of the publisher would be nice.
