As my thinking evolves, I find new meaning to what Holmes writes in this little book every time I have read it. I first read front to back years ago and have reread through a couple of times. I keep it out, pick it up, read a sliver and let that paragraph or page or chapter settle in to a new clarity in my thinking. All of us on the many paths to the awareness of the One, Spirit, God, Buddha, Mohammed, all paths will enjoy this book.

This is a "must have" book for any spiritualist, especially those embarking on the path of metaphysics. Dr. Holmes is a pioneer in helping people change our lives by changing the way we think about and look at ourselves. This is a little book of big Truth, simple and powerful, one of those timeless books that I refer to time and time and time again, and that I suggest to almost everyone that I work with.

If I had only one book to buy in my entire life, This Thing Called You would be the one. No other book that I've read so clearly speaks the truth about who each of us is and our place in the universe. And it's all about merely changing our minds, changing our attitudes towards life. Pretty simple stuff, really. But unbelievably powerful and attainable for everyone. Don't miss this book!

This book is my favorite all-time meditation starter. I like the idea of focusing on Christ's life for my meditations, for the obvious reason that we become like what we think about all the time. Well, this book brings all four gospels into play in a chronological discussion of Christ's life, adding touches of culture and history that the average person would not be aware of. This approach adds loads of meaning to what happens in the gospel accounts, since 21st-Century Americans really do have a hard time understanding some of the events and wording in the gospels. Frank Sheed's efficient use of the English language makes this not exactly an easy read, but a meaningful one, even for the average layperson.

F. J. Sheed was a brilliant writer. His To Know Christ Jesus, like Fulton Sheen's Life of Christ, is a great help to reading all four Gospels at the same time coherently, for as the author states, they were not written with chronology in mind, therefore the sequence of Gospel events could be confusing at times. Sheed not only guides the reader step by step through Christ's life, but as a friend of Christ (clearly the author was a man of deep prayer) he also makes the reader stop at certain places along the way to help him meditate and bring depth to the reality of Christ and the significance of His actions on Earth. This is truly a masterful spiritual work. I recommend reading it with the Bible open. It will deepen anyone's understanding and knowledge of Christ and give one a keener sense for detail, and one cannot love what one does not know well, hence the importance of this book.

This book provides the best gospel commentary/reflection known to man.
For every gospel story, this book has a thorough look at the passage along with comments on related passages. This book is well-written and easy to read. You can skip from chapter to chapter, or just read from start to finish.
Though it is easy to read, the material is dense. I've re-read this book 3 times and I'm still getting new stuff from it.
There are few books that I will *specifically* require my children to read. This is one of them. (Though I guess I'll have to wait 'til the kids are about 15-16.)

I checked the web site at www.ignatius.com for this item using the ISBN 13: 9780898704198, and the description there is of a paperback book.
The description below is from the Ignatius site
[ ISBN: 9780898704198
Author: Frank Sheed
Length: 399 pages
Edition: Paperback
]
I think that back in 1992 the book was published in hardcover under ISBN 10: 0898704197, but that edition appears not to be available any more.
I am providing this review solely about the edition that is available here rather than about the content of the book. I haven't read the copy I received yet, it was a paperback even though i was expecting a hardcover.
PS: after writing this review I requested that amazon.come make a change to the description of the books binding from "hard cover" to "paperback" and amazon.come agreed to the change. Now any purchaser will know exactly what they are getting when they order the book. I am impressed with amazon.come's willingness to make the change suggested.

Kushner's pièce de résistance

Rabbi Harold Kushner is best known for his book When Bad Things Happen to Good People, but this work is in my judgment his greatest contribution to the philosophy of the spiritual life, Kushner's pièce de résistance. Using my favorite Hebrew Bible text, Ecclesiastes, as a springboard, Rabbi Kushner writes about the "ultimate thirst of our souls": the need for "meaning," for "the sense that we have figured out how to live so that our lives matter." Rabbi Kushner offers readers his wisdom -- born out of years of study, struggle and life experience -- about how to live a life that matters.

READ this BOOK! Rabbi Kushner hits on so many relevant and pertinent topics that you will be amazed how you see yourself in the anedotes and examples used to illustrate Kushner's point. Rabbi Kushner uses the Old Testament story of Ecclesiastes to illustrate how man's search for happiness is eternal and not unique. I could not believe how similar Ecclesiaste's view on life and search for happiness are so similar to my own. I found myself stopping on many occasions and telling my wife "READ THIS!"
I have been on a self-help book crusade for the past several months. Reading a bunch of these books have helped in finding some understanding to the search for happiness I have been after. After each book, I can say one or two of the points explained in the book have made sense and have some good practical applications to dealing with everyday situations that arise in my life. Kushner's book is by the far the best. He gives you straightforward and understandable examples of the negative behavior that conflict in man's search for happiness.
From the opening pages Kushner had me! He hits the nail on the head when he says the lines "If you ask anybody what is more imporant - work or family? - without a doubt they answer family. But then ask them how much time they spend away from family by putting work ahead of family and making work more important than family obligations." (paraphrased) He has many of these observations that help the reader get some insight into how destructive these behaviors are towards our supposed goal of happiness. I highly, highly recommend this book - READ this BOOK!

A thoughtful, spiritual examination of why fame and fortune do not produce happiness, and why "average" and "successful" people often feel emptiness in their lives. Many brief anecdotes are used to illustrate the author's observations, which are linked to the book of Ecclesiastes.

Kushner is a sage and this book is a classic. As always Kushner's knits together wonderful stories, quotes, and historical observations that are always on the mark and move his thoughts forward. The disease that plagues our age is overconsumption and Kushner invites the reader to step away from the table of materialism and instead search out the things that really matter.

THE BOOK GIVES NUMEROUS EXAMPLES OF WHY THE NEW TESTAMENT IS NOT ENTIRELY VALID. YOU CAN SUM UP HER BOOK BY SAYING SIMPLY THAT THE NEW TESTAMENT WAS WRITTEN BY PEOPLE WHO DID NOT WITNESS WHAT THEY CLAIM, BUT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND OTHER CHRISTIAN RELIGIONS WANT YOU TO BELIEVE THAT WHAT IS SAID IN THE NEW TESTAMENT IS TRUE REGARDLESS OF THE LACK OF ACCURACY OR MISTRANSLATION. I WILL SAY THAT IT ANSWERED ONE OF MY QUESTIONS, BUT THE BOOK DOES EXPLAIN WHY THE NEW TESTAMENTS' VALIDITY IS QUESTIONABLE. ITS A GOOD BOOK TO READ IF YOU'RE SEARCHING FOR EXAMPLES OF WHY THERE ARE QUESTIONABLE AREAS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT, CHRONOLOGICAL ERRORS, MISTRANSLATIONS OF THOSE WHO WROTE THE CHAPTERS, MISREPRESENTATIONS OF THINGS THAT HAPPENED AND WHERE THEY HAPPENED AS WELL AS WHY. IT MAKES ONE WONDER WHAT REALLY HAPPENED 2000 + YEARS AGO IF NO ONE LIVED LONG ENOUGH TO WRITE ABOUT IT. WHAT WAS STATED HAS BEEN PASSED DOWN SIMILAR TO STORIES, ONE MORE GRANDIOSE THAN THE ONE BEFORE IT.

Who was Jesus? is an exceptionally well written and researched investigation into the Jesus story and the New Testament. The author, D.M. Murdock, brings logic, reason, and intelligence to a subject that has held human kind captive for centuries and dares to go where so very few ever dare go. This book rates among the top of a very small group of other equally as compelling books such as "The Age of Reason" written by Thomas Paine in 1794, "The World's Sixteen Crucified Saviors" written by Kersey Graves in 1824, and more recent publications "Caesar's Messiah" by Joseph Atwill and "An Infidel Manifesto" by Gary Lenaire.

This book is as intellectually honest as it is timely. The Evangelical movement and neo-conservatives have sought to exploit the uncertainty and fear caused by the attacks of 9/11 and this book is a shining example of the rationality, courage, and intellect that surfaces when society needs a drastic course adjustment. The ugly hegemonic aspect of organized religion has created "godly" millionaires and "humble" political powerhouses bent on the fulfillment of violent prophecies. Without the dissemination of the wisdom contained in this book, and others like it, it is a historically proven certainty that America will become a tyrannical fascist police state with Christianity at its "moral" foundation. If this is to be our fate, the very least that every person of good conscience owes to themselves, friends, and family is to set aside blind faith for a moment and challenge the beliefs that are brining it about. My only criticism of the book is that the author relies heavily on a scientific voice. I have found that logical argumentation conjures, in a split second, the cognitive consonance of blind faith which leads to paranoia, then anger. But, in the end, it is up to the "true believer" to work past this bias. I implore every person with the courage to take personal responsibility for their spirituality to get this book in front of as many Christians as you can, quickly!

Theologian David Bosch stated that, "The mission of the church needs constantly to be renewed and reconceived." And so Christianity and its myriad churches have adapted to the changing climate of secular cultural beliefs and methods which gain wide popular acclamation. By the time Voltaire wrote in "Candide" of his devoted disciple to ultra-rationalist Alfred Leibnitz, Prof. Pangloss, the "take it on faith" appeal of the churches toward less acculturated masses seemed glumly passe in the craze of the western cogniscenti toward the new rationalism that stressed study of evidence in rigorous empiricism and epistemology. By the 19th century, the gospels, scriptures, older apologies and other early Christian texts were beginning to be scrutinized by the criteria of rational method formulated in the immediate prior decades. Dissatisfied with the veneer of vague metaphysics in the literal content, the early Christian rationalists employed methods of literary criticism and developed "higher criticism" as a means of analogous and metaphorical interpretation.
Especially in the U.S., starting in the mid-20th century a reactive more fundamental and evangelical school of clerical scholarship is determined to take their "new" rationalism public. In the day and age of rocket science and electronic engineering, both in sermon and classroom, the scholars would spread the word that faith alone is no longer required to embrace Christ's one "true" revelation -- hence, books written for popular appeal such as "Evidence That Demands a Verdict" by Josh McDowell. (Apparently that was not enough : "The New Evidence that Demands A Verdict".) Alleged ex-Atheist journalists like Lee Strobel become super-stars on Christian television with books like "The Case for Christ", ad nauseum.
D.M. Murdock is not the first detective among skeptics to casually but surgically burst the bubble and pollute the punch of modern Christian claims of evidence. But in less than 200 pages she does so with an alacrity and thoroughness that is nothing less than stunning for the quantity of information imparted but brevity in outlining a counter-case. I am reminded of an especially skilled courtroom attorney orating a final summary of arguments to a jury.
She has the ability to make her case quite ably from a minimally clinical perspective, to be sure. But the reader is treated to so much more. We recognize in the writing style here, the sumptuous ability to engage her reader and immerse one in the vagaries of comparative mythology and religion that is the trademark of Acharya S. A passionate archeologist, classicist, and historian, she has that knack of being able to guide the reader into sharing with her the adventure of exploring intellectual realms not commonly known or appreciated. She uses such talent here in spades. From a respectful summarizing of Gospel Matthew, we are alerted to the problem of harmonizing the gospels, the problems of evidences outside the Christian paradigm, the problem of dating the gospels and other Christian documents by standards of best tangible evidence, the earlier Jewish scriptural and pagan influences on the NT, other issues aside, each more enthralling than the preceding, until finally debunking the weak claims of evidence, some clothed no better than the proverbial emperor, insisted upon by the growing range of evangelical Christian scholarship. The pages turn, the momentum builds, and even the most disinterested reader is introduced to fascinating aspects of literary development and mythologizing in the earlier ancient realm of our western tradition.

As a Religious Studies student at Indiana University I am extremely fascinated by the historical origins of Christianity. Ms. Murdock has provided a much needed objective evaluation of the supposed "evidence" which is usually marshalled in defense of traditional and conservative approaches to the topic. With an even handed use of logic, she forensically examines primary sources. While often citing mainstream and conservative scholars, she doesn't limit herself to their timid conclusions. In fact, her analysis leads to conclusions that are as reasonable as they are shocking. This work is both consice and thorough. It deserves strong attention from aspiring academics as well as those of the conservative literalist fold. Rather than dogmatize out of some hidden agenda, she, more rationally, lets the evidence speak for itself. I highly recommend this eloquent and persuasive volume!

I flipped through this book once and...nothing really hit me. Then I read it again, highlighting, circling, crossing things out -- and finally realized just how much this book is worth. It's pretty tiny as far as books go, but filled with lots of information that isn't for light snack reading. I'd advise you to keep it on your shelf and go back and read it when you're drawn to it- each time you read it, you can get something else out of it, depending on what stage in your life you're in and what information resonates with what you need to hear at the time. Some gems:
"...Stop trying to push the river."
"There is no point dwelling on what holds fear or pain for you; if you do so you will only create the same kind of energy and multiply your ongoing frustration with life. "Wisdom's Game" is a book that must be read with an open mind. Although is it a spiritual book, you don't have to be religious to benefit from reading it. This is a small book with a big message: pain and suffering can lead to growth, but only if you don't allow yourself to wallow in it. Disappointment, rejection, and other setbacks are a part of life, and of course it is normal to feel bad when things like this happen. However, if you change your perspective during these times, you can feel better sooner, rather than later. Each chapter includes quotes about a different subject in the book. I particularly like this one: "It is every human's task to face fear, examine its underbelly of resistance to experiencing pain and sorrow, and move ahead anyway."

I have known Judi Thomases for a long time, and long respected her as a healer, so it was my great joy to be able to read her book, Wisdom's Game.
Initially, I had trouble with the "game" analogy, but as I read along, I realized that I had the uncanny feeling that I was remembering something that I once knew and had forgotten... and the words rang true.
All my life, I have carried a memory- as an infant and a very young child, I remember feeling that some grasp that I had of something, some kind of consciousness was slipping away, almost the way one feels after waking up from a profound dream- and then having the memory of that dream slip away.
In a way, it was more the opposite- it was more like going to sleep... and I can truly say that I have spent my whole life slowly waking up.
Judi's book rings true to my sense of this very early memory, and helped me to "wake up" even more... and for that, I am very grateful.

This book is simply amazing. I read this book four times in a month before I even decided to write this review. It is only 105 pages, but it is a lot to digest, and it is a book that every time you read it you gain a new piece of knowledge. Judi Thomases, the author of "Wisdom's Game," has a background in astrology, tarot, psychic development and channeling. This book was channeled through her by The Brotherhood of Light Workers. Is that too "new agey" for you? Well don't let those things fool you; this book is DEEP regardless of your beliefs or religious background.
As I read this book, I remember it feeling like I was eating chicken soup on a cold rainy day, it was so comforting! The book talks about the game of life and how to turn suffering into joy. The book is separated into small chapters and before each chapter there is a preview and an inspirational quote. Each chapter is a gem within itself, explaining why we are here on this earth, and how to deal with pain in our lives. It offers new perspectives on life and anyone who reads this book can gain higher levels of consciousness just by reading the words of truth written within this book. "Wisdom's Game" exposes the bigger picture, the greater plan of life.
For example the first chapter's preview states: "Wisdom teaches that, while temporary pain is normal, continual suffering over its cause isn't necessary. We can instantly change our thoughts to take things more lightly." Another one of my favorite quotes in this book is from chapter five. "It is the impetus of suffering that always stimulates the greatest desire for change. Suffering, and nothing else, is the abrasion that produces wisdom." Oh my gosh! Of course it is! Aha! Light bulbs, everything went off inside of me! When I read that quote I felt a rush of understanding within myself. So many times, when I have gone through difficult times, I have asked the question why? Well within this book are the answers to the why of why we suffer, and how to deal with pain in a better way. I can really see myself re-reading this book, especially when I might be going through a difficult time.
This book is simply amazing and so needed for the human Light Workers in times like these. "Wisdom's Game" is truth and inspiration from cover to cover. I would say, if you have somehow stumbled across this book and this review, you HAVE to read it... no, you have been CALLED to read it. I would guarantee that anyone that picked up this book would gain something from it! Five stars plus!

If we can say that Zen is direct pointing to Reality, then we can also say that Huang-Po's teaching is direct Zen, without dilution. Anyone may read this book, but it will only make sense to those who already have a taste for the One that IS. This is not a beginner's book on how to meditate. It is rather a book that serves up the essential truth of spiritual practice straight up. Most highly recommended!

I've read quite a few books written on the subject of Zen from many different authors, old and new, translated and in original English. This one was probably the most enjoyable and clearest for me. This was very amazing since the original text was written over 1000 yrs ago. The foot notes and introduction are interesting because they gave me an idea of what the translator was thinking as he was translating. This book would also be of interest to anyone exploring Adviata Vendanta, Taoism, or other mystical non-duel traditions.
An essential translation of a record from one of the Zen giants!

Huang-Po was the teacher of Lin-chi (Rinzai) and one of the most revered Zen masters of all time.
John Blofeld a great Buddhist text translater picked this text to translate first because he felt it represented the most essential teachings of Zen Buddhism. One read and you will understand why...
However, one-hundred reads and you will still be coming back for more. Huang-po, said to have been a 7 foot tall austere Zen master offers some of the most profound teachings on "The Void" (Emptiness, Sunya) in the Zen cannon.
With humor, wisdom, and compassion, Huang-po delivers the essential teaching of Zen in a manner and style that will make you laugh, cry, and spur you to new insights into the mystery of life, death, and the Way of Zen.

The introduction to this book is a good overview and introduction to Zen for beginners.
The notes provided by the translator are very erudite and helpful.
This is an awsome text from a very enlightened Master. He continually refutes ceremony and intellectualism, pointing instead to the ineffable nature of Zen. Avoiding dualism and concentrating on immediacy, the Master says, reveals the path to follow the Way. This approach to "Reality" will be very foreign to the uninitiated Western mind. The book deserves to be read several times to allow its meaning to unfold.

This book is just one man's opinions and theories. Although I tend to read more into the Soto school, this book helped me realize that there is much more to Rinzai Zen than just Koans. And that there is a great amount of Zen philosophy out there other than Dogen's.
I have been following the idea that the highest attainment is when the man of the world and the man of spirit become one. So I've been trying to find out more about inner alchemy of Taoism and actualization of enlightenment in Zen. The last chapter puts it nicely. I loved his comments on the ox herder and the development of Holy Buddhahood. It goes to show that unlike other spiritualities, the highest attainment in Zen is not a deep Enlightenment. That is just the beginning. It is true actualization of realization.

You won't find these in any other book: explanation of how to create the necessary tension in the tanden to initiate samadhi (a definite prerequisite for that state); and an explanation of awareness based on the "three nen actions" involving reflections on immediate prior conciousness resulting in a continuity of awareness thus creating the illusion of a substantial unchanging self. However, I do agree with a previous reviewer who recommends the practice of Qigong as an important support for meditation. Qigong will most efficiently and powerfully supply the energy the tanden requires to produce samadhi. You may not find these two disciplines (Zen and Qigong) melded anywhere, which is a pity since they compliment each other perfectly and accelerate progress on the path. Therefore, Sekida's book together with "Energy Medicine..." (Hiew/Yap) and "Opening the Energy Gates..." (Frantzis) will provide the foundation for Samadhi.

I learned to do zazen from this book a long time ago. While I now have had a couple of teachers, the approach to zazen that I learned from Sekida has served me well on this path. I'll probably wind up teaching zen myself someday, and this is the book that I will be giving to my students. All of the other philosophical and historical books about zen are certainly useful, so we all know where the tradition came from, but this is the only really clear book about how to do zen meditation that I have ever read. Everything that Sekida explains about the long-term results of meditation, from off-sensation (which Sekida describes wonderfully) on to positive and absolute samadhi, I can verify that all of it is correct. There's no mumbo-jumbo here. For anybody who really wants to try zen meditation but cannot find a teacher (or doesn't want a teacher, which is also fine) then this is the book you should be reading and re-reading.

You won't get this kind of instruction even if you are lucky enough to have a teacher. Zen teaching tends to glance off the practical and let you stumble around looking for your own way. This book -- and only this book, of all the books I have read or considered reading -- imparts practical, step by step instruction on exactly how to practice zazen.
The three jewels are buddha, dharma, and sangha. Sekida cannot hand these jewels to you on a silver platter, but he can spare you many frustrating hours on the cushion if you're beginning -- or continuing -- your practice.
If you're serious about zazen, shove those guided meditation and newage [sic] music CDs to the bottom of your wish list, and buy this book.
My qualifications: Four years of daily practice, one year of practice with a sangha. That parses out to three years of stubbornly stumbling around on my own. I recommend a little less stumbling and a lot more practice.

Even though I viewed this product on line before ordering, it was not what I wanted. The 1994 edition I have of this book includes journaling space each day following the day's scriptures. I didn't realize this was not included until the books came. In giving this to members of my mission team, I wanted them to journal their praises to God for the 31 days. I think the journaling space makes the book so much more effective as a tool with which to praise God. The book is still very good . . . just not what I really wanted the way I wanted to use it.

I am not one given to tossing superlatives about or embellishing my correspondence with capitals. For this book, I gladly will make an exception. This is, by far, the BEST devotional book that I have EVER read. I received it as a gift a few years ago. I've used it almost continuously since and bought several copies to give to friends, who have, likewise, praised it with as much warmth.
It puts the Christian squarely in the right place, praising God and recognizing his sovereignty in every situation and over every person. Each day's devotional is in the form of a prayer, obviously drawn directly from scripture, and includes scripture references (in order) for each paragraph. Every few days there is a supplemental reading that enhances the truths given over the past few days.
Whatever my situation, circumstance or emotion, this book has never failed to provide me with the proper perspective. It provides comfort when I'm afraid, hope when I despair, confirmation when I rejoice, deepening my love and trust in my wonderful Lord, focusing my attention and love on Him and assuring me of His love for me.
It's compact size makes it completely portable; it fits in my purse or my desk drawer. Yet, the print is not cramped; there is no eyestrain.

GIA, the publisher of this hymnal, is a Catholic publisher. This book is not a Catholic hymnal unlike "Lead Me, Guide Me", GIA's "turnkey solution" to gospel-style music for Catholic services. Also, the lyrics have a lot more "I", "Me", "My" and "Mine" in the lyrics than would be appropriate for Catholic litugies. This is not a quibble; just a bit of information for potential Catholic purchasers. Those matters aside, this is a fine product, packed with impressive new material and old favorites that will add much to spirited worship.
