This book is wonderful. If you are dealing with a family member who has a mental illness (particularly severe schizophrenia), you will find answers and helpful advice throughout this book. The first few chapters provide insight into the illness and it's especially readable because Woolis doesn't get overly medical. She provides enough information for you to understand about the illness and why your relative may have it. The book is chock-full of useful advice, and we have tried many of her suggestions (with success) already. She walks you through ways to talk to your family member during `episodes,` how to get them to perform basic tasks, how to ask them to take meds, and so on. There is advice for almost every situation. And, the best part is that Woolis treats the illness with respect, and encourages us to do the same throughout the entire book. I really felt that her advice is from the heart, and meant to help us. There is a section on how we need to focus on ourselves too, and that was particularly helpful. The book is very user-friendly, and can be read cover to cover or in sections. Many of the sections answer the questions most family members have, and offer concrete and realistic ways in which to handle the bizarre requests and behaviors that accompany mental illness. Everyone in our family has a copy that gets a lot of use. Highly recommended.

The book is good. After seeing 2 other specialist and as time has gone by, we have been fortunate to realize that initial diagnosis was wrong.
Please NEVER stay with one single opinion in cases like this.
I felt like I died for a month after hearing the first diagnose. It was wrong.I will neither get those days back nor erase the pain and stress it caused at the time. It is over and that is a ggod thing. Get a second, third, forth opinion. God Bless.

an excellent book...

i love this book. by reading it, i chose to get a whippet as my next dog. i already have a golden retriever, but she's really my mom's dog and i wanted one of my own to take to new york city when i go to college. as luck would have it, my cousin, raymond, who is one of the top whippet breeders in the country, called me and told me he had two little puppies who needed homes. my mom, my brother, my brother's friend, and i all went to his house one weekend and came home with an eight week old puppy. i named him elton, and he's sitting in my lap right now as a twelve week old adolescent. thank you so much, to the wonderful authors, for helping me choose my next breed of dog!

While the book is fairly concise, it is a very thorough handbook for owning a Whippet. I have referenced it many times in the few months since owning a Whippet puppy and each time it has something valuable to say. I highly suggest owning this book.

Great book - comprehensive guide for whippet owners. Useful information for those primarily interested as a pet owner rather than those looking for specialised advice on breeding, showing etc. Highly recommended. Should be mandatory reading for all prospective/new whippet owners. The information is detailed yet highly readable. The writing is of an excellent standard making it a pleasure to read.

Not just for the Average "Joe"

First off, this is a great book. If anyone thinks this is just a glorified first-aid book, think again. Dr. Forgey's is quick to point out that some medical emergencies are best treated at a hospital by professionals, having said that he plays a "what if" game where evac is not possible and then provides detailed treatment strategies based on your level of skills and supplies on hand. It's a clever approach where plan A is better than plan B which is better than plan C which is better than plan D. Although, he'll point out that plan D is better than doing nothing. His sense of humor is not lost in this book which makes for a compelling read. It's a must have for laymen or practicing pro new to wilderness medicine. I couldn't recommend this book enough. My only complaint, if it qualifies as a complaint is that there isn't a 6th Edition with the latest in medical technology represented. Having said that, if a technique worked in 1999 it should still work in 2009 or 2019!

Favorite excerp from the book: "Red-hot branding irons and pouring gun powder into a wound and lighting it, while effective in killing germs and among Rambo's favorite techniques, also destroy good tissue." (Chapter 3 p.93 paragraph 2)

This one is a keeper, and at the current price, you should buy one for anyone that travels a lot...anywhere!

I found this book to be of outstanding usefulness. The book is designed for a person with advanced medical skill. It is not a first aid book. It is what the title says "Beyond First Aid". The writer displays his knowledge of care from his own experience as an outdoors man and lays out and describes in detail what is needed under various adverese circumstances.

The book was a bit too basic for my taste. I understand that the layperson doesn't have access to many things that a doctor does. But to me, the book was more about band-aids than it is about stitches. I think it could have been a little meatier.
Due to the limited availability of many medicines to the average Joe (or Jane), I suppose the writer couldn't put in a lot of information on how to treat as a doctor would. But I was actually hoping for more of that kind of information.

Contest with Nature
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-07
Living out in the wild, in the wilderness, is a contest with Nature. Most of the time, man wins the contest, but sometimes ... stuff happens.

Chapter One is about Assessment and starts with that key question: scene safe? Then Dr Forgey takes his reader through the ABCD's, vital signs, levels of consciousness, head to toe examination, shock, respiration rates, heart rates, and CPR. (The numbers for chest compressions and breaths has been changed by the AHA since Dr Forgey updated this book, but that is a minor issue.)

Chapter Two is about body system management. The focus of this chapter is on the systems in the head but the abdomen and reproductive system are given sections as well. There is also a very good, short section on poisoning from food poisoning to shellfish poisoning.

Chapter Three covers soft tissue wounds and treatments ... and suturing and stapling.

Chapter Four covers orthopedic injuries from head to foot.

Chapter Five covers bites and stings and anaphylactic shock. Interest-ingly Dr Forgey finds that rubber suction cups are as worthless as mouth suction. His lone endorsement is the Sawyer Extractor (which is available from Amazon.com).

Chapter Six is on infectious disease. Dr Forgey lists the most signif-icant *wilderness* diseases for North America and the world should one be contesting Nature abroad.

Chapter Seven's environmental injuries include hypothermia, heat stress, high altitude related illnesses, and ... being struck by lightning. Step current is caused when lightning hass struck and the current spreads out like a wave across the ground and the victim's feet are different distances from the strike point. Since the body has less resistance than the ground, a circuit is completed.

There are two useful appendices at the end of the book.

I am EMS certified and as a BLS instructor. I had a few quibbles with Dr Forgey such as his choice of prescription medications to list in one of the appendices. However I had no major disagreements and found the book to be more easily readable than any EMS book I have read. Lots of nuts and bolts and no fluff.

Also as I write this review, I am preparing a first aid segment for a TCLEOSE course on mantracking. Dr Forgey's book provided me with a lot of detail and anecdotes to include. However just as the title says this book is about wilderness medicine *beyond* first aid.

Superb source for beyond first aid

It's no surprise that every reviewer has given this excellent and comprehensive book five stars.

Written by William Forgey, MD, former president of the Wilderness Medicine Society it goes beyond first aid, dealing with situations where you cannot merely administer initial care and then count on a rapid evacuation. Forgey writes with a light hand; he avoids jargon and has a dry sense of humor. For example (p. 157): "How do you calm a person who's just been bitten by a snake? Not surprisingly, just telling him to remain calm won't work."

There are seven chapters, beginning with assessment and stabilization, and going through body system disease symptoms, injuries, bites and stings, infectious diseases, and environmental injuries. There is an excellent appendix for putting together wilderness first aid/medical kits, both with prescription, and non-prescription meds, and with a bandaging module.

You don't have to be physician, nurse, or EMT to benefit from the book. All the information, is practical and hands-on; of value to the layperson who is interested in first aid and emergency medical situations. After an initial reading, Wilderness Medicine is a fine reference work.

This is a great book for those who need some motivation to get up and start taking better care. I call it the "mean book" because Dave doesn't sugar coat anything. The dangers of our increasingly sedentary life are clearly outlined. Some of the information is redundant, but this communicates his very strong feelings about eating right and exercise.
If you are willing to read the book, then you are willing to do something about your health. It is a book for beginners, not for advanced lifters. The diet and exercise recommendations are beginner level, but there is a wealth of information, books and websites in the appendix that is worth the price of the book alone! And you can take the basic information and tailor it to your individual needs. Getting in shape isn't easy, but this book is a good starting point. After reading this, and doing a lot of highlighting, I'm inspired to jumpstart my fitness regime! Go for it!

Revival is Aptly Named

Dave Draper's new book, Your Body Revival, is as elegant and powerful as its cover design. Dave has never embraced the merely fashionable, always living the lifestyle his own body reflects. Even in the gawdy presence of infomercial gadgetry and magazine puffery, he walks his own path: modern bodybuilding and the Draper lifestyle are merely coincidental. What he teaches is passion, not fashion.

Like the best coaches, Dave Draper enthusiastically conveys his subject matter to his needing charges, betraying the love he has for both. I don't say that lightly. Dave really wants to see hurting people change, and his instruments of change are as solid as a barbell plate. He doesn't just advocate a way of eating, he explores it for the reader's benefit. He doesn't just say that using weights to change one's body is the way to go, he tells you why. And, just as important, how.

Most of all, Draper's book is a call to a lifestyle, not just a change in one compartment of the reader's life. He's lived the values he promotes, and he demonstrates how adopting them as unchangeable, as part of your very foundation, brings you the kind of mastery over your life that results in joy.

Your Body Revival is aptly named, because the new person you are hoping to become isn't going to be handed to you. That new person is going to awaken -- inside you. Dave Draper knows it, because he's lived it. And now, he'll show you how it's done.

Buy this book.

Those of us who where training back in the mid 1960's remember the transformation of Dave Draper from a over bulked, almost fat guy to a ripped blonde adonis who more than held his own with Arnold, Oliva and beat guys like Franco Columbu and Ricky Wayne.

Draper's program is no secret to those of us who were around in the 60's. It is a high protein and water diet; protein coming from tuna and other low fat, high protein sources.

The fact that it is low fat would make it more desireable than say the Atkins diet which is very popular and a high protein diet that is high in fat.

This program will trim you down and get you cut up like you wouldn't believe.

Isn't it interesting that the old methods are coming back and popular again?

High protein, low carbs. The weigh to go.

Just look what it did for Draper!

It Really Works

Please see the update below. I should have given this book 5 stars.

I generally like most of what Dave Draper writes and I do admire him. But this book had nothing to offer someone like me who knows most of what's to know about weight loss and bodybuilding. I did find the part where he puts little emphasis on aerobics of interest and do totally agree with that. Weights are far more important and should be given (excuse the pun) more weight.

His brief discussion on cholesterol was also of interest.

This book would be great for someone who doesn't have a lot of knowledge of weight lifting and who really doesn't know how to lose weight.

But if you do have this knowledge, there's not much to recommend the book in my opinion.

Update:

August 18, 2006

Because the important thing about a book is not how it's written or what you think you take away from it when you finish the last word and put it down, but rather what it's teachings or suggestions accomplish in your life, I offer this update to my original review.

Since I wrote this review I've lost 5 of 10 pounds I need to lose by using the basic teachings in the book. I've done no aerobics or what one would call cardio. I lift for about 20 minutes three time a week. I do a split routine: Chest and Back on Monday, Arms and Shoulders on Wednesday and Legs and Abs on Friday.

I don't do everything exactly as instructed in the book. For example, I can only stand tuna from the can once a week at best. But I do fix things like tuna and salmon patties done in a bit of olive oil. I also use my George Foreman Lean Mean Grilling Machine for my main meal, which is lunch. I even do some potatoes in olive oil on the grill. Dave Draper may not approve but it works for me and I've got to have a bit of food that appeals to me.

I also added 200 more calories to my daily diet that CalorieKing gives me. I wasn't losing when I cut too many calories. This is also in the book. Take it to heart.

By the way, a 20-minute weightlifting session burns around 200 calories. And the great thing is that it keeps burning for days! Even while you sleep. I can live with that.

I think each person has to adjust things to his or her own needs and likes. But I can attest that by following the basic tenets in this book you can lose weight at a pretty good clip. And you can do it without aerobics or running or all those things that are hard on knees, especially as we age. At the same time, you can give your cardiovascular system a workout by taking little or no rest between exercises and sets. Believe me on this one!

And you'll lose weight without a drastic cut in calories.

As a side note let me tell you what happened this morning. I woke up with one of my migraines. I just about had decided not to work out. But I figured it couldn't make me feel worse. So I did. Guess what? My headache was gone at the end of the workout! They usually last 4 days.

Now was that due to the workout? I don't know and I'm not trying to make a claim here. I'm just stating a fact. There may or may not be a correlation. But it makes me wonder.

Will keep you updated.

Your Performing Edge is quite simply the best book i have ever read on the subject of improving mental performance. I am a keen amateur golfer with a 4 handicap and a great natural athelete. Like everyone, i was searching for that "miracle" to help me break through the next barrier - my mind. I have read and studied a number of other books and programs about improving mental performance. While many gave you the answers to "what" you need to do, none gave you the answers to "how" to improve. Dr. JoAnn Dalkoetters insights, lessons and tips are the most valuable resource ever produced on the subject. Combine this book with her Personal Coaching Program and you have, what i consider to be, the most powerful program available. I am now playing the golf i have always dreamed of. Your Performing Edge is a must read for anyone seriously considering improving their mental approach to atheletics, life, business or otherwise.

First of all, I can't believe this book is out of print. Second of all, I'm stunned that this author isn't a household name. I rarely write reviews, but I can't really say that any more b/c this is the second review I've written for this author in as many weeks. I found the authors latest book, The Story of You (wonderful!!!) and a previous book of his, Reinventing Yourself (just as wonderful!!!) to be absolutely phenomenal stuff. Brand new ideas, at least I've never heard anyone talk about these subjects in the way he does - and I read tons of these types of books. This stuff is absolute gold. I bought this book from a 3rd party as a used book and encourage you to do the same. The dust jacket is awful looking, I ditched that right away. It looked very 70's and very cheesy, which is strange b/c this book was published in 2000. Weird. Many people do judge books by their covers (even though we're not supposed to (ha ha), I have a background in graphic design and am a total snob about these things :) But I'm not even halfway through this book and I'm *loving* what I'm reading and feeling compelled to write a reveiw. What a find! Now I want to order a copy for a friend of mine so I'll again order one from a third party on Amazon. It's crazy that this book is out of print! In case the author reads this review; I would have ordered the audio cd's as well, but they are abridged. My question is why? This isn't a very long book, why not record every wonderful word?

A couple years ago the author of this book (who didn't know me, nor I him) sent me a free copy. I have no idea why...

...but I am thankful now that he did. It sat on my shelf for about two years. But I eventually picked it up with the desire to become more "relationship oriented."

The chapters are nice and short -- they can be ingested in about twenty minutes. That's very convenient for me. He also does a fine job making profound relationship-truths simple to understand.

This books has been a great help to me.

Like a little seed that Steve planted in my life, it is now shooting up and bringing forth good fruit.

It's clear that we create the life & relationships we want. Coercing and manipulating people to do what you want them to do and be what you want them to be doesn't work. It's difficult enough trying to change the things that irritate me about myself, wonder why I ever thought it was a good idea to try to change other people?

Funny, smart, erudite, Steve Chandler affirms that our biggest and most powerful erogenous zone is our brain. Chandler deflates the myth that love just happens---true love, whether of a friend or a spouse or a pet, is cultivated and created, over and over again. Great stuff.

The stretches in this book are described and illustrated in easy to follow detail. Many myths about how to stretch are dispelled, and beyond proper technique, there is information about the physiology behind it. I bought the book with spiral binding so it stays flat, leaving your hands free to assist with the stretches.

This book will change how you think about stretching. It explains what is wrong with the way many people stretch. It is good for athletes as well as for people like me that have lost range of motion in my shoulder joints. I highly recommend this book.

I'm a middle aged woman who hates to exercise but I do it because, well . . . we must ;-)
My massage therapist recommended this "Active Isolated Stretching" book to me and I'm amazed at how much flexibility the exercises quickly produced. The instructions are clear and simple to follow; the photographs show proper position. The laminated cover and spiral binding are a plus, too; the book actually stays flat and open to the page you are working on!

Although I prefer Dr. Cooper's first book, "Aerobics" this book is also well written, easy to understand, and conveys the importance of aerobic (principly in the form of jogging/running) as presented by the author.

Written 14 years after the original "Aerobics", Dr. Cooper has continued to evolve his principles about aerobic conditioning in this book

In this book Cooper also presents his thoughts on what constitutes productive and effective exercise as opposed to ineffective exercise and exercising to the point of over training.

I recommend this book to people who are new to exercise or people who are just starting out.

I bought'Aerobics' by this author in 1975 when I was 43 and slipping into the state where I was puffing to tie my shoe laces
a friend recommended the book. Without doing anything too drastic in the diet department other than to increase fruit and vegetable consumption and skip fried food.
I started off in the Poor category and commenced the running programme by walking the first week for 1 mile, having to make an effort to do so in under 20 minutes on the first day.
I followed Dr Coopers directions and was amazed to find how accurate his time estimates were and how well I felt as I reduced from 110 Kgs to 85 Kgs within 5 months.
I retired when I turned 69 and now at 73 I have a need to get my arse into gear as my weight has crept up and my cardiovascular system is in dire need of rejuvenating.
I note Dr Cooper has fine tuned his work and I am embarking on his cycling programme with confidence

Dr. cooper throughly explains how your body (mainly the heart and lungs) works. The book is about his studies on aerobic exercises and how it affects the body. He talks alot about his subjects and thier conditions and how aerobics helped rid themselves of thier problems. I would say to anyone who is serious about thier health, to buy this book. It's for those who are obese, those with heart and lung conditions and even those who have problems sleeping. This book is basically for anyone and everyone. Buy this book and it may help you live longer and healthier.

Puja Thomson writes with depth and authority about one of the most terrifying experiences a woman can face. She draws from her own bout with cancer and her history as a healthcare provider, to create an indispensible guide to understanding all aspects of this disease including traditional and non-traditional treatments, insights into patient's rights, and information on what to expect and what to demand from others involved in the healing process. Had "After Shock: From Cancer Diagnosis to Healing" been written several years ago, two of my own family members might be alive today to be praising this book as I am.

What makes this book so incredibly unique is that it is not only a wealth of vital information, which would be valuable on its own. Puja Thomson looks beyond the medical into the personal chasm created when a diagnosis of cancer occurs. Sometimes the hole in our wellbeing is pre-existing, and so cancer healing needs to happen at the soul level as well as the cellular level. Readers experienced in holistic living practices will find as much to anchor them in this process as those who are only just learning about the mind-body connection to health and wellness. Thomson empowers readers to create their own wellness program by incorporating relaxation and meditation techniques, creating a meaningful atmosphere, finding certain imagery to stimulate healing and powerful moods, and, perhaps most importantly, by cultivating a deep soul connection to health, mindfulness, and spirituality.

"Puja's book was a great help to a friend of mine who was diagnosed at age 21 with inoperable lung cancer. Her words are wise, and full of wisdom from personal experience with the material covered. Clear, logical reasoning, respect, dignity and compassion run throughout the book.
Puja offers a advice and instructions on how to handle visits and treatments, including questions that should be asked, and information that should be known. Her insight is vast, and her wonderful suggestions can quickly relieve any panic and confusion that occur following such a traumatic diagnosis.
Puja also provides alternative choices to the accepted allopathic offerings, and these too are clearly and concisely discussed.
My mother had passed away 23 years ago, and I wish we had had this resource at that time. No matter what the outcome, Puja's book and the wisdom shared in it will make whatever the timing and path chosen much easier, more productive, and worth living.-Raymundo Rodriguez-Jackson, New Paltz, NY."

I am a Licensed Massage Therapist and I read Puja's book so that I could become a better resource for my clients who are dealing with cancer, either of their own illness or that of a family member or friend. What I found was a wonderful resource for Cancer patients as well as anyone else who may be struggling with an illness. While the personal accounts in the book center around Cancer specifically, the advice within it's pages is practical for anyone who needs to know how to organize themselves regarding their own issue - from how to get the personal and professional support you want and need to how to organize your bills and other paperwork. By simply having the book in my office, it opens a door for my clients to talk about themselves and often to begin the healing process. Congratulations to Puja for creating this valuable resource, with love and light.
