Mitchell's remarkable account of her relationship with David Touff reminds us, regardless of whether dementia is involved, to be respectful and mindful in our relationships with each other. This well-told story is inspirational and informative, and is of especially great use to anyone dealing with how to relate to anyone whose faculties are fading.

Marilyn Mitchell has done an extrodinary job depicting the life and heartwarming stories of David Touff. Marilyn focused on herself just enough; not too much, but enough to let the reader understand her as the loving caregiver that she is. As the reader becomes acquainted with David throughout the book, they feel wrapped up in every emotion he experiences. My father has Alzheimer's and there is never "one size fits all" formula when it comes to caregiving. From the time I finished this book, I am still carrying David in my heart!

Marilyn is an extrodinary person and writer. She gave of herself far beyond what the average caregiver or family member could even imagine doing. David was blessed indeed to have had the years with her as his close friend.

I came to this delightful book from the perspective of a daughter helping to care for my dear mother in the last 5 years of her life with Alzheimer's. Oh, how I wish I had read the book 7-9 years ago for its insights about relating to someone with dementia. Yet I think readership of this book should not be limited to people interested in this growing health problem. The book is a guidebook to enjoying life more fully, especially in the city/area where you live, as the author and David did with the many field trip pleasures of Denver. If you feel that a key ingredient of a good story is how people transform one another through their relationships, you will find yourself instantly captivated by Marilyn's and David's encounters and ensuing bond. They each possess charm, wit, and intelligence. Marilyn has an endearing ability to put herself in David's shoes, trying to understand his shrinking world and helping him uncover his genius. Marilyn's gift for language and her perceptiveness gives this book an energy that carries you to the end and leaves you regretting you're on the last page. You counter the regret by sharing this gem with others.

Dancing on Quicksand was an incredibly inspirational book. Reading it has made me want to be a better person, listen more carefully, to love others unconditionally, to work harder at loving others where they are. In a culture where we want to get rid of anything difficult, it was refreshing to see what Marilyn Mitchell gained by sticking with David and loving him through his illness. Although this is a book about a person who has helped someone with dementia, it is far more than that. It is a book about what real love looks like. I am just about to open up my copy one more time and read it again. Thanks Marilyn for sharing this rich experience with us!

Following the trend set by her earlier "Diary of a Worm" and "Diary of a Spider", Cronin has crafted yet another highly entertaining, informative critter autobiography. Though she anthropomorphizes the fly, it's helps make ordinarily boring factoids (like the fact that "flies beat their wings 200 times per second") come alive to the young reader, who can easily identify with what's going on during the fly's first day of school. As a former health inspector, I was pleased to see the author pointed out that flies regurgitate their food into the next food they eat (one of the reasons you want to cover food at a picnic.) The illustrations are very funny and help make this book a good first nonfiction to share with classes. Teachers might also consider using this as a fun example to get the kids started thinking about writing journals.

What a delightful book!

I have the series-Diary of a Worm and Diary of a Spider-and my three boys absolutely love them.

Fly is good friends with Spider (If you can believe it!) and Worm. She dreams of being a superhero but doesn't think it's possible. She's cute and kind and she has that sense of insecurity I think all children possess: 'Am I good enough?' Which, of course she is, as her friends help her realize.

I couldn't wait to get this book and my children were just as happy as I was. As I read it to them, we laughed and enjoyed the beautiful pictures that graced every page. Highly recommend all the books. Good to read them in order- Worm, Spider, Fly -or whichever way!

Great fun!

I read this to my 3rd graders in the days before Christmas, and they loved it. It was then passed around the room and re-read by many of them. They found that looking at things from the fly's point of view very entertaining. Yes,I had to explain some things to my second-language learners, so it was a vocabulary lesson as well.

Absolutely hilarious.

I bought this for the child of a friend and it was a huge hit. The book is creative in it's conception and the lay out. The laughs start even before you get to the story--the "photo's" on the inside cover and page liner give you an early taste of what's to come.

The illustrations are consistently great and colorful. Some of the language may require some explanation (the first entry is for the first day of school as the fly nervously asks "what if I'm the only one who eats regurgitated food?" (I mean, how many 4 year olds are going to be able to fly along with regurgitated without explanation?) But the explanations, I'm told, are part of the fun. (The fly need not have worried--it turns out all the flies eat regurgitated food.)

From visits with relatives caught between windows and screens, to the delights of a spilled ice cream cone as a "favorite food", this book is a complete hoot from the beginning to the end. Not a false step anywhere on the way.

Give both your child and yourself a treat and spend a few days in this fly's world!

The novel, The Dogs Who Came to Stay by George Pitcher depicts the lives of four beings, two dogs and two humans. It is a memoir written in honor of Lupa and Remus, two dogs that changed the lives of their owners and offer proof that animals have emotions as well as rational thought. George Pitcher describes how his life and the life of his friend Ed Cone were greatly influenced by these two very unique creatures. The book is full of funny as well as emotionally appealing anecdotes about their lives with the dogs. Upon beginning the book it is easy to think that it was the two dogs who gained the most by being adopted into the home of George and Ed. By the end, it is apparent that the human's lives were influenced just as much as the dogs were by this act of kindness.

In his writing, Pitcher is able to demonstrate and portray the obvious emotions, affections, reasoning, and personality that is contained within this being, the dog. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves dogs, likes to read a touching story, and especially to anyone who doubts that animals have and can display emotions.

I stumbled upon this book in the library recently, and have since told all my friends they must read it!! I think the fact that it was written by a man made it even more special. It always surprises me when men show their feelings so openly and with total abandonment, eg: Nicholas Sparks, James Michael Pratt, to name a few... The love and devotion that these two Princeton professors had for these dogs was so intense. Their dedication to the animals was astounding and therefore reciprocated in great abundance. Anyone who owns a dog, has ever owned a dog, or needs to be convinced of the immeasurable experience of owning a dog, needs to read this book. It touched me more than any story of animal/person unconditional love and devotion that I have ever read. A must read!

This is a true tale of the stray wild dog, who looking for a place to have her imminent brood of pups, takes up residence under the shed of two middle-aged batchelor academics at Princeton. They slowly befriend her and coax her out to trust them and take food for the pups. Despite their busy lives she is greatly loved, and she and one of her pups become very much part of the family. The story is told very simply and lovingly. They have some entertaining experiences in French restaurants and aboard ocean-going liners. Recommended for dog-lovers everywhere, who will all relate to it strongly.

I have suffered from severe panic attacks and social anxiety for the past two years. I had my first attack while heading to work as a power house attorney, or at least that's how I once viewed myslef...indestructable. Until, as Jamie said in his book, " a lightening bolt that crashed and split my life in two....before and after." I have never felt fear like that in my entire life. I have worked many a courtroom and controlled and manipulated situations, but this was a different animal. I was simply at a loss.
I quit my job and I have not worked as an attorney in over two years. Fear won. Along with some renowned pyshologists and experts in the field of anxiety, Jamie gave me a step by step plan on how to best beat this demon, and, not only beat it, but to ultimately use it to my advantage. I learned that I was not alone or defective in any way. This is a common problem and it is also highly treatable. This book gave me the courage, inspiration and arsenal to get back in the ring. I highly recommend this book and applaud Jamie for using his pain to help others in need.

I dont remember the last time I read a book cover to cover in less than a week. I went to the book store just to kill a few minutes before going for breakfast, never intending to buy anything. But their was Jamie's book, staring me right in the face when I strolled down one of the aisles. I bought the book and believe it was just something that was supposed to happen. I didnt end up in the bookstore by accident.

I have been suffering with social panic disorder for about 10 years. It just hit out of the blue when I was on a trip to Florida on vacation. I have had my shares of ups and downs and have been frustrated with why the attacks still come on in the first place after all this time. Reading this book reinforced that I will have these ups and downs and thats ok. I have been batteling for a long time, on the surface looking like I have everthing together, but underneath still struggling to cope sometimes. Jamie's book was a great inspiration for me to keep the fight going and see that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks Jamie, for writing the book and sharing your story. It makes me feel like I can win the battle. I plan on buying a few more copies and give it to some close friends so they can better understand what I am going through.

I have read many books on anxiety, especially when i was going through it full force. Most focus on strategies and helpful techniques. While this book also does this, it adds something invaluable, a human connection.

Jamie Blyth describes his bout with panic vividly and without shame. These particular chapters were the most powerful and in my view helpful. Its rare to read the awful situation that one with panic can go through, and then his struggle and strength of conviction to make it through. I applaud the author for this. Finally someone uses his 15 minutes of reality fame to help others. he should be applauded.

Jamie Blyth, former Bachelorette contestant recently wrote a fantastic book, Fear Is No Longer My Reality. After reading his inspirational novel about how he overcame social anxiety and went on to compete on national television for Trista's heart, I wrote to him.

In my email I wrote:
"I'm sorry to say I didn't get a chance to catch you on the bachelorette. But I was recommended your book. I'm in the middle of reading it right now, and I'm loving it. I've been struggling with anxiety disorder all my life and its just recently that its starting to really interfere with my life. I love how its formatted, your book, the way you have your story and then all this advice and information. Its really helpful and at the same time very entertaining. Its always nice to read books like this that I can really relate to."

So today as I was writing a difficult chapter, I got an unexpected email.

"llana...
I just want to drop a line and say thank you for writing to me and I am happy that you found the book to be helpful. Since Oprah and after the book, many people have shared their heartfelt stories of pain and struggle, and the more I read them, the more I realize that they are all different and yet somehow the same. We share a bond. As painful as our lives can be with anxiety, our problems are not unique to us. Anxiety is the most common mental health problem in the United States today. We truly are not alone and we are not without hope. These two quotes have helped me out a bunch: "If there is no struggle, there is no progress"...Frederick Douglas.
"Courage does not always roar. Sometimes it is the quiet voice at the end of the day that says I will try again tomorrow"
Thanks again for writing. I really appreciate that! "

Jamie Blyth's Fear Is No Longer My Reality, is an amazing book of triumph over tragedy and will be most appreciated by anyone with anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorder affects over 19.1 million adults in the United States. It is the most common mental illness in the United States.

Intrigued? You should be. Fear is No Longer My Reality has advice from professionals who deal with this disorder.

Personally, this book has changed my life.

(I also think its phenomenal that Jamie takes the time to write back to his fans.)

This guy is a buffoon. Two thumbs down.

It looks like I am in the minority, but this book was a major let-down. The first 6 chapters held my interest as Jamie describes panic/anxiety disorder as it developed through his college years. Once he gets out into the work world and describes his experiences as a sales rep gets things get very repetitive. By this time everything he could say has already been said and I couldn't wait for this book to end. He never really explains how he "overcame" the disorder, other than by sheer grit and willpower. Not very helpful for anyone suffering from the disorder! He doesn't describe his therapy and treatment although there are comments interspersed from doctors and psychologists which are mildly helpful. Blyth's humorous writing style is enjoyable, but his overexaggerated descriptions of rather minor every day incidents is too much. (On the order of those "I walked to school 12 miles in the freezing snow, uphill all the way" jokes.) He allows two chapters to what made him famous, "The Bachelorette" TV show. He makes sure to let us know that he was actually trying out for the role of the Bachelor but when he didn't make it he was relieved to be one of 25 men vying for the heart of Trista Rehn. He reveals that "My fear of rejection was not so focused on Trista as it was on missing the rest of the experience. If she cut me this soon, I'd have to go home. I figured out right away that I wasn't going to marry this woman...but each time (he made the rose ceremony cut) I got to stick around, I was thrilled." Seems pretty disingenuous to me, just like this whole book. He figured out right away that he could cash in on a book deal and anything else he could milk out of his TV appearance. Don't waste your time and money on this book.

Our building has a bin in the laundry room where people put things that they don't want anymore, in case someone else in the building would like to have them. That's where I found "Food" by Susan Powter. As someone who is sick to death of "fad diets" and believes that carbs convert to starch, then to sugar, then to fat, I didn't hold out much hope for the book. But it surprised me. I absolutely *love* this book, but am reading it very slowly, one small section at a time. It's a bit overwhelming to take in all at once because Ms. Powter is such a powerful speaker, but she speaks good, common sense and has an uncanny knack for knowing what you're thinking, and saying so. I find her style delightful, her research & references sound, the medical information challenging (who knew how many different kinds of fats there are, and what they are?), and her sense of humor refreshing. I like the way she backs up her statements, I liked finding out that I'm not the only one who has qualms about eating animal products. Although I'm not getting radical or turning vegan or anything, I can now see where the fats come from, exactly how much protein we *really* need and where we can get it, exactly what is supposed to be so great about dairy, what it has to offer, and where *else* I can get that. I'm drinking water for the first time in my life, taking vitamins, and most importantly, reading labels, in the store, and teaching my sons how to do so also. We are all implementing her ideas, with good results, slimming down and feeling more energetic for the first time since I was disabled ten years ago. By the time I am finished with this book, and its recipies, and everything else I plan to do with the next book (which I've already ordered), who knows? Might get those Gwen Stefani abs yet, and just in time for summer too...ahh...thank you, Susan, for showing me how to get rid of the flab and eat right, feed my kids healthy, whole foods, cut the garbage out of my diet and take control of my kitchen. I hope this book does the same for others, but my advice is to be patient with it. Take your time, don't go gonzo making huge sudden changes. It is written to cover three phases of changing your diet, so take it slow. Baby steps. Do that, and it will work for you. The best thing about it is that you learn to eat more, not less. You can eat as much as you want, whenever you like. It is *what you eat* that the book deals with, and if you're thinking that it's a bland, yucky diet, no way. The recipies are absolutely delicious with next to no fat, and there are a lot of recipies in there. Tons. And kids like them too. If you're wondering whether or not to buy this book, I'd have to say go for it, and take it seriously. It has more benefits than I can possibly list here, so enough said. See for yourself!

Here are some forty exercises that use yoga, Pilates, karate and stretches as their foundation and which are grouped into sections - those to be done lying on your back, sides, and stomach. Step-by-step photos accompany easy instructions in a book highly recommended for both general lending collections and the home libraries of those confined to bed.

This book was great, exercises are simple to follow and isolate the muscle groups for immediate results. You are shown how you can modify most movements to suit your physical needs and photos are helpful. It is nice to see an exercise program that almost anyone could use and enjoy with positive outcome and it is wonderful to see exercises that all of us can continue doing as we age. This book arrived quickly in good condition. It would also make a nice gift.

I was surprised at how easy these exercises are and how quickly the results are felt. I'm sleeping better and feel I have better balance since starting the program. At 81, I cannot do a regular exercise program but this is one program I can do and can stick with it.
It's about time someone thought of the older population and our need to remain safe in our homes.

Dr. Dorree Lynn's description of good therapy also describes her Getting Sane: "peppered with humor and salted with common sense." It's a straightforward guide that can equip any reader to be an intelligent consumer of mental health services. Eight easy chapters cover deciding where to look for help, choosing the therapist who's right for you, cost, confidentiality, medication ("From Prozac to St. John's Wort"), alternative therapies, and more.

"Even if your life at this moment is perfectly satisfactory," Dr. Lynn points out, "it will, at some point, throw you a curve ball." When it does, you will need this book. Somebody you know needs it now. Be a friend! Tell a friend about Getting Sane Without Going Crazy.

The book answered all of my questions about psychotheraphy and then some. Getting Sane Without Going Crazy was easy and fun to read, and written in an engaging style. It was not what I expected, it was much better. Dr. Lynn's insight and candor into the field is very couragous. Her personal stories were so vivid I could see the people. I look forward to reading her next book, when she writes it.

The subject of mental health continues to be taboo for many people. Consequently, finding help during a crisis may feel like a Herculean task.

To address the issue, Dr. Dorree Lynn has done a masterful job creating a guide to mental health. In a frank, honest manner, she distinguishes between the various types of therapies, both traditional and non-traditional, finding the right services, as well as the nuts and bolts of the insurance system. In effect, "Getting Sane Without Going Crazy" is a roadmap through the stereotypes, misconceptions and and mystique of mental health.

Throughout the book, Dr. Lynn asserts a very empowering truth: Every client has an active role in their own healing. Whether in choice of practitioner, therapy style, length of therapy, or type of treatment, the client's voice counts. While many struggle with the 'doctor always knows best' mindframe, Dr. Lynn presents a refreshing reframing of therapy dynamics.

Of particular interest, was the chapter comparing psychotherapy and spirituality. At first glance both appear to be unrelated entities. Dr. Lynn, however, makes the point that the end result, a feeling of wholeness, is a shared goal. Although different paths are taken, a spiritual or psychotheraputic journey share the same outcome.

Whether faced with a life crisis, or battling depression, finding help may feel like a daunting process. It may seem as if the decision to enter therapy, and with whom, is too much. In a clear, well planned manner, "Getting Sane Without Going Crazy" unravels the task at hand. Dr. Lynn arms the client with knowledge vital to the success of any healing process. In an era where the quick fixes provided by the Dr. Lauras of the world are considered Gospel, Dr. Lynn offers a guiding voice of reason.

"Getting Sane Without Going Crazy" makes extremely enjoyable and interesting reading. Whether you are considering therapy, or know someone who is, this is an extremely well-made resource.

I am organizational consultant, a mom of three and a wife. I have looked long and hard for a sensible, practical, readable book to give to my clients. Eureeka! This is it. I also found Gettimg Sane personaly helpful. The book also raised questions I had never thought about. What a treat. It is an informational page turner, written by a woman who is not afraid to put herself on the line. I am waiting for the workbook for use in my courses. Do it soon.

I got this book for my dad who I just found out has cancer. He was told to get some reading material to bring for when he gets chemo- but something with short stories because your attention span is shorter. He has really enjoyed it.

"A Good Day Anyway" is an inspirational journey about the importance of maintaining a possitive attitude when a person is diagnosed with and goes through treatment for cancer. While I have been fortunate not to have had cancer, I have lived through my child having cancer. Her mother and I would have loved to have had this small but mighty book to help keep our spirits up while going through the process. We too believed that a possitive attitude was paramount to her survival and still do 24 years later as she celebrates her 30th birthday next month! What a great tool this book is. It is a must read for all persons who have been affected either directly or indirectly with cancer.

This little book is so much fun, it makes it even better that I know one half of this amazing couple, but it truly does make light of a terrible disease, I have shared it with so many people since reading it. Being a health care provider I know this should be a staple bedside companion in any medical facility.

Dave Massey's inspired poetry reminds everybody that no matter how bad it gets it is better to make the best of it. His example of positive thinking is at the essence of the human spirit and what we can achieve when we've got our minds right. I would recommend this book to anyone going through cancer, but especially to everybody else, because there is no time for negative energy- it is a waste and a detriment to our society.

Encouragment for the cancer patient and their loved ones.

I bought one of the first copies of A Good Day Anyway. My review has been a long time coming. Dave Massey is my son. I have read his poems over and over for the past 10 years. Each time they bring tears to my eyes. Tears of joys, he won two battles with cancer. Tears of pride, he wrote most of them when he was barely able to hold a pen or pencil. Tears of thanks, to the Doctors and Nurses who took care of him. A Good Day Anyway is not just beneficial for those dealing with cancer but for the loved ones, family, and friends that are also involved. I have made copies of these poems to share with those who themselves or their family member are battling cancer. I highly recommend that everyone read this little book as it is encouraging to know that someone out there beat the odds and became a better person because he had cancer.

I wish there was more publicity on this book. I had watched the show and goggled the show for images and came upon a picture of him before the show and was shocked to see his weight and even more shocked at what he is today. After viewing the sample pages provided by Amazon, I knew I had to grab a copy. I am 10 years older then Frank but he touches the core of my problems. He is an admirable writer that can be respected by all ages. I really appreciate his honesty, sincerity and encouragement. He taps into emotions and experiences that I have yet to see in any book, and for it to target the young generation is phenomenal!! Thanks Frank :)

He fails to mention how he truly lost weight

Frank Gotti's diet and exercise book really reveals the trauma of being overweight as a kid/tennager. I couldnt believe the before and after pics! And the heartfelt text inside. Frank was not afraid to show his sensitive side, in an effort to help others lose the weight as well. I applaud him--he has guts!....(and he's gorgeous!)....Katie Ross
