I was diagnosed in October 2006 and began treatment one month later. The time between diagnosis and treatment was fast-paced, confusing and sometimes overwhelming. I had exceptional care, but I was not as proactively informed as I would have liked. Dr. Chan's book is exactly what I needed then, and it has been tremendously helpful now, over a year later, in understanding what all that took place between surgery, chemo and hormonal therapy. I have recommended this book to all my girlfriends who in one way or another are affected by breast cancer. I can't recommend this book more strongly to you or your loved one who is now facing breast cancer or trying to make sense of the breast cancer they have already been fighting.

This is one of 2 books I purchased when I was first diagnosed. Terrific and I still use it as a reference. Helped me when I was deciding on treatment (very borderline for chemo) Very detailed but easy to understand. I'd recommend this to anyone going through breast cancer.
There is so much written out there that is out of date or incorrect. If you have to buy one book, this is the one.

My wife and I have been on an emotional and psychological roller coaster since she was diagnosed with breast cancer. This book has really helped us to sort through and make sense of the terms, options, decisions and implications for treatment. It is well-written, clear, organized and cross-referenced. The case-study vignettes are particularly helpful.

In his humble, hopeful and helpful style, the author directly addresses about 285 of the most commonly-asked questions from patients seeking specifics to help address individual circumstances. He addressed all of our concerns, to the extent that we better understand the complete picture so we can chart a course of treatment with our medical team that's right for us. Thank you, Dr. Chan.

When I was first diagnosed with early stage breast cancer, my friends gave me this wonderful resource. Reading that book gave me a tremendous peace of mind. Dr. Chan had answers to questions that I didn't even know to ask. I felt relieved when I read that there has been much advancement in recent years and many options to consider in treatment.

Then I went through biopsy, lumpectomy, follow-up radiation, and then started Arimidex; my treatment went exactly as he described. I re-read those sections that pertained to me; they were informative and technical, with supporting studies and statistics. Most importantly, there was always a positive, warm tone. Dr. Chan was my guide through an anxious period. This book should be everyone's companion through a scary process.

I have purchased this book for my friends who have breast cancer and for their families to understand what's going on.

There is HOPE in this book!

I highly recommend this excellent information-packed book for anyone diagnosed with breast cancer! In the first ten minutes of reading it, I found more reassurance here than I have found from anywhere else! I trust the knowledge of Dr. Chan to help with questions of the mind and of the heart, while presenting solid facts and statistics, as well as the two most important factors for recovery: comfort and hope.

This is a great resource for the newly-diagnosed, and a well-written, gripping bio - but it is far more than that. ... What an moving reliance on the power of prayer! What an awesome testimony of faith! I loved the anecdote about the 'pennies from Heaven'!

A BIG 'thank you' to this author!I am confident that there are few people who will not profit by the information contained in this book. Especially in view of the so-called 'Pandemic which is looming over all of us, I feel that it is imperative for everyone to know how dangerous it is to be 'overloaded' with iron - which, to bacteria, fungi and viruses, is like 'fertilizer' to plants! This riveting, well-written, 'first-person' account alerts readers to the perils of iron accumulation in the body.

More than just about a disease!.
On another website, I saw this book described as the 'definitive book about Hemochromatosis', and I agree. However,a prominent researcher has written that it is the story of a remarkable man and an extraordinary relationship. He was right. - It's more than a layman's reference to genetic disorder. It's a consummate love story. Love at first sight...the enduring adoration of a teenager for a young man; which would lead her, in time, along an thorny path and against all odds, to a fight against ignorance of a disease. That fight has culminated in the saving of lives around the world.

I found this book to be very useful. It was a pleasure to read, fun actually. It helped me to finally take off the last few pounds I was trying to lose. I am a physician and found Dr. Jampolis's approach so easy, that I have recommended it to many of my patients. I like the simple recipes. Her tips on traveling and eating out are great. The information about cholesterol and diet is teriffic, too. Keep at it Dr. Jampolis.

Thank you Dr. Melina for this incredibly user-friendly book. I have always been interested in nutrition, eating healthy and maintaining a healthy weight, and I became very frustrated when, after having my kids, I couldn't get rid of that last 5-7 pounds despite perfectly adhering to Weight Watchers and calorie counting etc.

I finally met with a nutritionist who helped me create a lifelong way of eating that didn't involve counting calories or obsessing about points etc. I was able to lose the last 5 pounds and have kept it off. After seeing Dr. Melina on local TV, I was curious and bought her book. I was so pleased to find that her guidelines and principles are very similar to those that my nutritionist laid out to me. She presents these very sound principles in such an easy-to-follow way that I have been recommending her book to friends and patients in my practice.

Her principles will be helpful to anyone, whether you feel like you know everything about nutrition (I thought I did) or whether you're starting from scratch and want to start leading a healthier lifestyle. Dr. Melina is a physician who has dedicated her practice to nutrition, which engenders so much confidence in me as I read through her book. And this is also a way of eating that you will take with you for the rest of your life.

Beth Witrogen McLeod's book Caregiving The Spiritual Journey of Love, Loss, and Renewal is a must read for any person taking care of an ill loved one, whether they are a child, spouse and/or aging parent. My interview with Beth revealed a strong woman with a fierce detrmination to help other caregivers make the most of a very painful situation. Beth includes her own personal journey along with the stories of hundreds of people she has met online in her chat groups or in person during her many public appearances in her incredible book. As the creator and editor of HotFlash! a woman's online perimenopause/menopause magazine and online support group, I have found women in the same place as Beth. She has described so well in her book the guilt, the pain, the sorrow and yes, at times, the joy of taking care of a sick loved one. In attempting to find hope and love in a truly difficult situation, Beth guides us to make good decisions not only for the person needing care but for the person herself. She pulls back the curtain on this often overlooked yet important topic.

This is a must read for anyone taking care of a loved one and for the rest of us who will one day be in these extraordinary shoes.

In an ideal world, we'd all have parents who we would want to help in old age, and it would be our honor to help them in their old age as they have helped us in our youth.

However, for the children of substance abuse parents and/or mentally ill patients the answers do not come easy. Things are much more complicated than simply finding a place to live, and deciding how much time you can spend with said loved one.

I'm not trying to over simplify, because all decisions dealing with older loved ones are difficult, but I was kind of hoping it would have given me more direction as to when its important to protect yourself as well. Its easy to get caught up in the caretaker role, feeling like a matyr without thinking about wheither or not this is the best desicion for you and your immediate family. Especially, if its puts you at risk for other health issues.

If you are the type of over-anxious mom I am, you will want to have all your child's medical records in one place. This journal is a great tool for organizing and recording your child's doctor visits, illnesses, etc. It is small enough to put in your diaper bag and take to the dr's office where you can then pepper the dr. with all the questions you've written down in the journal. And it's got a cute cover to boot!

I have to agree with the other 5 star writers. Pound for pound (makes a difference in your backpack) this book is hard to beat. I find it more complete than Secrets of Anesthesia, and more user friendly than Miller. If you want to learn 100 ways to not do something, and read conflicting studies then go for Miller, otherwise "M & M" is king. Besides, I challenge anyone to bring Barash or Miller into the OR with them for a quick reference...

The best all-around book for residents and practitioners.

I used the third edition of this book for my writtens and orals. I am fellowed in cardiothoracic anesthesia, and boarded in pain medicine. It is more than comprehensive enough for everday practice, and it is more than enough to get you through the written boards, and will certainly help with the orals. Miller, Barash (is there an etc to these two choices?) are much more comprehensive, but they are highly dependent upon the writers of each chapter: while some are great reading, others ramble on incessantly about studies which show effects on giant squid axons, or how 3-74% of rats will react when their tails are clamped. And who can forget the effects of isoflurane on the livers of salamanders? Morgan-Mikhail is put together logically, it is highly readable, and it is extremely affordable, and while it won't give you every answer, it's a good start.

It is a good basic book that covers the essentilas very clearly in not too long chapters. It is a good entry level book for doctors during their first year of residence in anesthesia.
Also for the doctor that needs to update his knowledge.

My personal experience and the reason for buying the book was that I after 5 years i neuroanesthesia needed an update prior to a period as an anesthesiologist in a not specialised department. In this way the book served its purpose well.

This would be an optimal choice for most medical students with a special interest in anasthesia as well as for anaesthesia residents. It's extremely well-written, neither too detailed nor too simple. The authors write with authority, which is a good thing.

If I had to say something negative about this book, it would be the lack of colourful illustrations (this refers to edition elder to the 2005 edition). But then again, one knows what to expect when buying a Lange medical book. Still, this is a minor drawback, and means nothing in my eyes. I highly recommend this book!

Overall, a great book to have on hand in primary care.

I have owned or used the various editions of Habif's Clinical Dermatology for over ten years in our general internal medicine practice and return to it again and again. I have also used a variety of other Dermatology books brought in by staff - typically the $60 - $80 range books. They are typically o.k. but nothing stands up to Habif and I recommending spending the extra $ for it (in the $125 range). The pictures are big, clear and of typical presentations, the layout logical, the review of basics up front helpful and thoughtfully presented. You will find that this is the one you reach for when you need help.

Although "The Doggy Bone Cookbook" is small, it is jam-packed with quick, easy to make recipes for natural dog biscuits that are sure to please even the most fussiest canine palettes! It even comes with a cute plastic doggy bone cookie cutter. I have already made four surefire hits from this book - Cinnabone, Pea-mutt Butter, Garlicky and Cheese, and Bark-B-Que, and my one-year-old Keeshond gobbles them right up. The ten recipes are easy and quick to assemble (making them quite appropriate for children to make!) and require minimal healthy ingredients for maximum taste. The book also includes helpful tips such as how to cook the biscuits to just the right consistency (something I had had problems with in the past). If you enjoying cooking, and care about feeding your dog foods and treats that contain natural ingredients (with no chemicals, food dyes or preservants), then this book is perfect for you!

I really enjoy making the recipes in this book and my dog really enjoys eating them (as do the dogs in his obedience class). I have only two issues with the book. First, I don't think that the batch sizes were changed from the original book to accomodate the smaller bone cookie cutter size, because I always end up with many more treats than it says I should have (not that my dog is complaining). Also, there are no recipes for dogs who have corn and wheat allergies as all call for either corn or wheat flour although I'm sure with a little work you could substitute oat or rice flour. All in all a fun and creative book!

In reading "The End of Diets", I found it so refreshing that someone had written about eating from a personal voice that really spoke to me. I have read countless books on eating and dieting and they all say the same thing, but this one actually explains WHY we eat and what tools are at our disposal to finally, finally, finally eradicate the behavior for life.

I have read "The End of Diets" several times and each time I get something new from it, it has literally changed my life. Because of its insight I have been doing yoga for over a year now and have not been on a "diet" for the first time since I was 12 years old. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is on that roller coaster of dieting and constantly looking for that book that is going to "be the one" that is going to help them.

I got a lot from de la Altagracia's heartfelt guide to healing emotional eating, both as a professional counselor and on a personal level. It is a shame that this book suffers from a lack of editing with grammatical errors and awkward phrasing throughout.
Some of the author's suggestions are familiar and one could dismiss this book as nothing new, however de la Altagracia brings a deeply felt commitment to her process of healing the pattern of "eating through emotions". She succeeds in engaging the reader on a personal, not just intellectual level.
I appreciate the integration of body-awareness and body work into the book's program. The author's approach synthesizes cognitive, emotional, and body-centered methods into a multi-modal strategy. She also provides a simplified explanation of the myriad of diet options currently vying for attention.
De la Altagracia emphasizes the life-long nature of the healing journey, instilling hope and realism.

when i first started to read this book i felt it was going to be someone's success story and that if you did this and that it would work. luckily i kept going past my judgement and allowed myself to hear my excuses and my fears and my past wanting me to stay fat, that has allowed me to stop dieting and just start being, not doing anything but slowly allowing myself to just sit with myself and learn about myself that i wasn't willing to look at and love before. i don't think i will lose weight quickly, but i think i will finally be able to have a balanced control over food.

This spring I read a number of books on emotional eating and thought this book dealt well with the problem, but less so with solution. Then I found The truth about addiction and recovery, by Stanton Peele and Archie Brodsky in my local library and bingo! It helped me both to understand the problem, the triggers and to design solutions. In other words, it enabled me to custom tailor my life in a way of which I can be proud. Most of all, it was illuminating to get away from the "disease" (think Alcoholics Anonymous) model of addiction. A very hopeful book and I recommend it highly.
