This book has every diet you could ever think of in it and it helps you pick the one that would work best for you. I learned a lot from this book and lost some weight without putting it back on.

I'll admit that these diet plans probably work, but I just got this book and it is not as easy as it sounds. I can see how it would work for celebrities who have someone to make them the meals they want with the allowed foods.

I am a busy college student, and the 3+2 was what was the best for me, but there was no way in the world with my schedule that I'd be able to get the amount of protien that my plan required by cooking foods. So I was going to try drinking protien powder shakes.

THEY ARE DISGUSTING AND EXPENSIVE. If you have the time and the money to prepare a variety of meals then I think you will be satisifed with this book and I wish you well, otherwise you will have a hard time. All these diets require that you eat a LOT of protien, and not from some of the sources that we previously believed to be good protien, like dairy products.

Also, if you don't know your exact body fat for some of these plans you have to make estimates, how many people are going to go out and get their bodyfat monitored? Your doctors office would laugh at you if you called them and told them you wanted to make an appointment to do that. There are a lot of hidden advertisements for Dr.Perrone's products, constantly reminding you to dial a certain number toll free if you need something he wants you to buy and he can't find it.

However, I am using the book as inspiration to diet, I may not lose fat as rapidly as if I was on an exact plan from the book, but I am going to try. I am going to eat a decent amonut of protien and lots of vegetables, and limit my fat and carbohydrates.

These diets REALLY work!!!

I have read this book from front to back and have selected the perfect diet for me from the diet questions. I have lost 15lbs in two months eating the foods that I love from the protein, carb, fat and free foods lists. I followed the instructions and have not been hungry. Other than planning to cook a turkey breast on the weekend for the week and for shopping for my foods that I will eat that week, this diet is a snap! I feel healthy. I feel very good. My muscle strength is returning and my fat is melting way. I would reconmend to the buyer of this book to get the free Lean Body Mass Calculator from (Diet Hacker). By weighting yourself once a month, doing the measurements that are required by the Lean Body Mass Calculator, you will get a fairly accurate Percent Body Fat measurement. With this number, the rest of the calculations in the book for your specific diet will give to you the exact information that you will need to create your daily meals. I would also advise that the buyer take a good multi-vitamin & mineral supplement, so you will be sure your body is getting the complete nutrition it needs everyday.

Here's to a slimmer me! Yum!!

Very interesting, but somewhat gimmicky

Beware! This book is not for helping you change your habits over the long-term, but it interesting because it gives you a range of options should you need to lose weight quickly. And I MEAN WEIGHT, not NECESSARILY FAT. In fact, you will probably just lose a lot of water and the glycogen stored in your muscles, instead of actual FAT. It is pretty much physically impossible to lose 5 pounds a week unless you are morbidly obese and totally starving, which is not healthy, nor is it realistic over the long term. But "Dr." -- and that's Ph.D., not M.D.--Perrone gets 2 stars from me for the effort!

I loved this book. There was a short segment in the front talking about the spiritual aspect of yoga, meditation and breathing, but the rest of the book is poses. They are divided into sections with pictures on how to get in and out of each pose. The pictures are very clear and perfectly done. At the end there are several workouts and instead of having just a list of all the poses, they include tiny pictures of them so you do not have to look back in the book if you don't remember what the poses are. This is a very good book.

I havent read a ton of Yoga books, but this material is comprehensive and has an array of poses for practitioners of all levels. This book does not have a long section devoted to the history and theology of Yoga, so hit the library if that material is essential to you. If you're looking for a truckload of poses complete with variations for your personal level, buy it ASAP

Hatha Yoga Illustrated, for greater strength, flexibility and focus by Martin Kirk and Brooke Boone is a great yoga resource. It was co-authored by Martin Kirk, one of my yoga teacher trainers, and was used extensively during my teacher training. But even if Martin didn't write it, I would still recommend it.

Hatha Yoga Illustrated is a comprehensive manual of basic hatha yoga poses, providing lots of clear color photographs and instructions for over 70 common poses and their variations/modifications. It includes information regarding benefits of the various poses, suggested counter-poses and contraindications, which can be very useful for those with injuries and/or health concerns.

There are several photographs for each posture including common variations with detailed instructions for obtaining proper alignment as well as directions for coming into and out of the poses safely and with awareness. It's written in a very practical, user-friendly style that is clear and easy to understand making it a perfect guide for beginners and on-going reference book for more experienced yoga practitioners.

Chapter one provides a brief overview of yoga including some background and history, yogic breathing, how to use yoga props, where and when to practice and some meditation basics. But Hatha Yoga Illustrated really isn't about yoga philosophy, it's about yoga poses.

The remainder of the book - chapters 2 through 10 -- is a step-by-step guide to the poses that are grouped according to the following categories:

Standing Postures

Balancing Postures

Arm-Balancing Postures

Inverted Postures

Backward-Bending Postures

Twisting Postures

Forward-Bending Postures

Sitting Postures

Reclining and Relaxation Postures

The last chapter outlines eleven useful hatha yoga routines, or sequences of postures for helping you link them together in various home practice workouts. Two indexes are provided at the back of the book: a photographic index by English name and alphabetic index by Sanskrit (ancient yogic language) name. Helpful resources including a list of yoga schools and sources for yoga props and clothing also are provided.

Hatha Yoga Illustrated would be extremely helpful as a standalone book for getting oriented to many common yoga poses or a great accompaniment to your DVD collection to clarify poses you have questions about.

You can purchase Hatha Yoga Illustrated at most bookstores, including Amazon.com where it currently has a five star rating. It is also available directly through it's publisher Human Kinetics at www.humankinetics.com

I have had this book for over a year now. I use a highlight marker to highlite the informative tidbits. This book can be hard to digest because of his knowledge of chemistry and the human body. Most of his health tips are very easy to read though. I have been on a high dose vitamin regiman for most of my life and I have not had any serious health problems. I look, act and feel much better than people half my age. (I was born in 1964).Dr. Pauling started the vitamin revolution back in the late 1960's. This book (How to live longer) is like a Doctors journal. As I said earlier- alot of the book is hard to understand unless you know something about chemistry. Dr. Pauling himself took 18 grams of vitamin C a day and lived to the age of 93. I myself take about 7 grams per day but I feel that is good enough for me so far.Dr Pauling also took his own urine samples to do tests on vitamin C and he found out that only 15% of the vitamin C is excreted through the urine! That means that the other 85% is being used by the body.Go on youtube and you can watch video clips of Linus Pauling discussing the importance of vitamins.
Thank you for prolonging our lives Dr. Pauling!

While I agree with those who contend that even in large doses vitamin C undoubtedly doesn't cure cancer, neither do the deadly poisons of chemotherapy and radiation. Unlike the horrible side effects and life shortening poisons of chemotherpy and radiation, even in large doses vitamin C won't poison your system and shorten your life. Having said that, I convinced that you can take to much of even an excellent vitamin such as C.

The mildest form of chemotherapy, mustard gas was used in WWI. It was so difiguring that it's use was outlawed at that time. The form most often used in present day cancer treatment is the most toxic form available. As it burns the tissues, radiation is no safer than chemotherapy.

In the 1970's Nixon declared a war on cnacer, which meant he was declaring war on our bodies. I'm not war with my body, but rather desire to do all in my power to treat as the fearfully and wonderful made creation of God that it is.

While not a cure for cancer either, a truly healthy diet, optimal doses of all vitamins and minerals, fresh air, moderate sun exposure, plenty of rest, dealing with emotional issures, etc, can prolong people's lifes, give them a better quality of life with less pain and in less advanced cases even reverse the disease. Way to often we are looking for a magic bullet supplement or treatment for disease. There are no magice bullets, but rather we all need to take "responsibility" and care for our bodies the way they were designed to be cared for. Prevention of disease not cure should be our emphasis.

User "L. POWER lp542": while Linus Pauling is a great mind and his vitamin regimine is a wonderful way to maintain a healthy immune system, his mega-doses of Vitamin C are ABSOLUTELY NOT a primary treatment for cancer, as you suggested. It is irresponsible of you to suggest that taking large doses of vitamin C can push one's cancer into remission. The only effective prescriptions for cancer are those offered by leading oncologists, like surgery, if possible; chemotherapy; radiation treatment; radiofrequency ablation; monoclonal antibodies; etc. It is irresponsible and morally abhorrent to suggest that vitamins can be an effective primary treatment for cancer when leading oncologists have never supported this hogwash. You are presenting a supplementary treatment as a primary treatment. And, since cancer is a fatal disease, your advice can actually shorten the lives of patients who would otherwise be receiving treatments that actually work and have been proven to do so in double-blind randomized placebo trials. Do you really believe that a random book (written by a Nobel laureate or not) contains secret cancer fighting tools that leading researchers and oncologists are not aware of? If vitamin C loading was so groundbreaking in the treatment of cancer, don't you think there would be articles about it in major medical journals and presentations on it at the annual ASCO (American Society of Clinincal Oncology) convention? There is a reason that mega-doses of vitamins are not used as primary treatment at cancer hospitals. That reason is that vitamin C loading is NOT a proven primary treatment for any type of cancer. There are NO studies proving that vitamins can push any type of cancer into remission. Those cancer patients you mentioned who are alive today are not living because of their vitamin loading. They're alive because of the primary treatment (e.g. chemotherapy, radiation, monoclonal antibodies, etc.) they received.

I have not read this book, but I somehow doubt that Linus Pauling would suggest in it that vitamins are a good primary treatment for cancer. In fact, I'm sure he didn't. Something this riculous could only come from a crackpot poster on Amazon...

My grandmother was taking about 26 different meds for all sorts of conditions, COPD, arthritis, diabetes, cholesterol, fibromylagia, etc. etc. I figured most of her symptoms were a result of over medication and side effects. I first got the book "Best pills, Worst Pills" to review her meds. I highly recommend it. Then I started getting books on nutrition and vitamin supplementation. This book by Pauling is the best I have read. After you read it, it will give you a better understanding of how to look at you health from a big picture point of view. The other book I highly recommend is a book by Hoffer called "Putting it all together: The New Orthomolecular Medicine". He writes more about his clinical experiences. If you read the Hoffer book first, you would probably be a little more skeptical, but if you read the Linus book first, it will give you a better foundation for accepting Hoffer's propositions. I want to congratulate Lise Cloutier Steele, and Mary Anne Wyatt, for this excellent book on the devastating effects of a hysterectomy. Incredibly, the vast majority of women who have a hysterectomy do not receive adequate information about the harmful side effects of their operation before their surgery. The women's stories represent the tip of an iceberg that reveals the chilling effects these surgical procedures have had on the lives of so many women: one in three women over the age of sixty-five in Canada have had a hysterectomy. It is difficult to comprehend the thinking within the medical community that ignores the scientific literature which speaks of the side effects and is responsible for the loss of so many vibrant, intelligent, and powerful women to our society. These are other excellent resources: http://www.cbc.ca/natureofthings/show_hysterectomy.html and the HERS Foundation in the U.S.

I thank Lise Cloutier for writing misinformed consent book. Many of us women have been hysterectomized and we had no idea of the facts involved, simply because doctors do not tell the facts. I had a hysterectomy several years ago at age 21 at the advise of my doctors. I find misinformed consent to be specially informative for those facing hysterectomy, and informative for the rest of us as well because it indicates many of the side effect of a hysterectomy, which many are suffering with, but are not aware of the source of their problems. I do believe misinformed consent will help many women. Again, thank you Lise.

I felt like I had "come home" while reading Misinformed Consent. I cried as I poured over story after story of these courageous women and their health problems after unecessary hysterectomies. Everything I read validated my own experience and made me see I am not mentally weak, rather, I suffer from a physical endocrine problem caused by surgical menopause. I don't need a doctor to agree with me whether I am, indeed, experiencing symptoms like depression, insomnia, weight gain, low libido, etc. If I say I am experiencing them and if all these women say they are experiencing them, then it is TRUE. Shame on the pharmaceutical companies for making a buck while destroying quality of life for women. In Misinformed Consent, I learned there's such a thing as salivary testing for hormone levels, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy and compounding pharmacists. Thank you Lise Cloutier-Steele and friends, for this very edifying and informative book. If you want to LIVE instead of just SURVIVE and if you are contemplating hysterectomy, READ THIS BOOK!!

I cried when I read Misinformed Consent because story after story validated my own experience with symptoms and doctors.
These courageous women discover it's not mental weakness they're suffering from, it's physical endocrine problems caused by uneccessary hysterectomies. Any woman considering a hysterectomy should read Misinformed Consent. Any woman who wishes to live instead of survive should read this book. Thank you Lise and friends, for Misinformed Consent. In it, I learned, for the first time, about saliva-testing for hormone levels, compounding pharmacists, and bio-identical products for hormone replacement therapy.

The courageous authors of this remarkable book have accomplished the near impossible: They have taken on the medical profession and revealed its LIES AND COVER UPS. These are real stories by real women who TRUSTED THEIR DOCTORS and were BETRAYED, physically and psychologically damaged, and abandoned by those in whom they entrusted their very lives.

I can only imagine the pain and torment these women have suffered through their experiences, and the difficulty they must have endured in reliving and writing this book. WE are the beneficiaries of their heinous experiences. "Misinformed Consent" has unlocked the door behind which the careless, deceptive victimization of women has been well hidden. These women educate and inspire..and I, for one, am eternally grateful for their efforts in giving this book to the world.

"MISINFORMED CONSENT" is THE BOOK every woman MUST read and SHARE with mothers, daughters, sisters and friends.

Better than Stedman's or Dorlands

I have had a Stedman's and Taber's medical dictionary for years (20+) and they had gotten a bit long in the tooth so I bought this book and Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary as I thought Dorland's looked slightly better than Stedman's. I decided to compare definitions of a word in both books and Mosby's definition was impressive enough to have me make the purchase (amiodarone was the word, a cardiovascular drug). I used it while studying for a recertification examination and found it by my side as I went through several other books.

This book was the single best resource I had after purchasing almost $1k worth of new books!

The quantity of definitions may not exceed Dorlands, but the QUALITY of the definitions is SUPERB. You get not only a skeleton, minimalist definition but a mini-tutorial of each topic. Just the dermatology related definitions alone with pictures kept me from buying a dermatology book. Definition after definition I looked up - and this went well over a thousand words, perhaps 2 or 3k words - resulted in getting an excellent authoritative discussion of a topic, giving the most salient points in a concise and highly readable form. I had in excess of a 99% 'hit rate' of finding highly useful information with each lookup. Doing this with Dorland's gave me the most trivial definitions in comparison, often little more than the pronunciation of the word and a circular reference to another definition. I gave up after about 100 words as an exercise in time wasting.

I put this book right up there with the Merck Manual as absolute must haves for any serious student of medicine - from the senior specialist to the beginning nursing student. I give it the highest accolades.

I have two more words for how this helped me study for my exam - THANK YOU !

I got this book because it had such awesome reviews. I'm going to be taking a test in the near future, and you're allowed to use a medical dictionary, and I picked this one.

I've been taking practice tests. On the first practice test I took, the first 6 out of 7 medical terms I tried to look up weren't in the book. I was stunned, and several of them were pretty basic words that I just wanted to get a very clear definition of.

I'm not sure it's even going to be worth lugging this book to the test, or even keeping the book. I may just sell it and try another book.

I've always leaned toward natural cures and remedies since watching three family members die/dying of cancer, wasting away to nothing and being tortured through chemo and radiation.
This book has:
Symptoms
Other diseases/conditions that can mimic the same prognosis
Diet recommendations (Foods to avoid, Foods that make condition worse, Foods that soothe/heal)
Herbal Remedies
Holistic Remedies
Aromatherapy Suggestions
Reflexology Points/Suggestions
Acupuncture Points/Suggestions
Case Studies/Surveys
Causes and Solutions
I borrowed this book to my neighbor who has frequent bouts of Gall/Kindey stones and had multiple surgeries. He changed his diet to the recommended suggestions and is taking Cranberry extract and other ideas from the book and is doing great now!
The book tells you what your Doctors don't!

Sept. 2007 I decided it was time to make a dream come true...learn hypnotism. I literally spent 4 - 6 hours a night researching on the net, watching You Tube, checking out what the field had to offer.
If I had just found this book first it would certainly have saved me so much time...and time is money...that means the book would have been FREE. I had purchased well over $800. of books, cds, and dvds, when I found this book.
If you were only going to purchase one book to learn about stage hypnotism then this is it. This is written more like a text book, actual education. I read until I reached the last page, cancelling all plans for that day. The book was written so that a person could actually decide if that is the direction they want to go or not.
My only complaint is that it left me wanting to move to Ronning's town so that I could study full time with him.

What makes Ronning and his advice unique to anybody wanting to perform stage hypnosis is that nobody--and I mean NOBODY--is so consistantly promoting and teaching stage hypnosis while simultaneously performing stage hypnosis shows for a living as does Geoffrey Ronning. He has dominated this niche successfully for a long time because he has love and passion for the hypnosis business that you won't find anywhere else.

If you want to be a stage hypnotist, you want to learn everything you can from a working stage hypnotist and hypnosis teacher. Geoffrey Ronning fits both bills and he's the best at it. Trust his advice and hire him for more. He will not let you down. It all starts when you own your own copy of the Ronning Guide to Modern Stage Hypnosis today! The nuts and bolts about hypnosis

What I wouldn't have given to have this book when I started out in stage hypnosis. There is no fluff, it's right to the point and gives you the true nuts and bolts of performing stage hypnosis. I know many people, myself included, jumped at the chance to pay a lot of money, take off work for a week, hop on a plane and travel to in my case Seattle, just to study under Geoffrey and Wendy Ronning. He absolutely didn't hold anything back and you get it all in the comfort of your own home for a ridiculously low price. My only complaint is that he didn't charge more money for the book to keep the curious away.
I really do love everything about this book, but the one subject I find to be priceless is what to do when no one gets hypnotized. I think it is the biggest fear of every beginning hypnotist. I know that it was mine. I still remember beginning to learn about stage hypnosis and literally going on a quest to discover a plan B when the show goes wrong. I E-mailed every hypnotist I could Google and only got one response. His solution was to bring some magic tricks along with you and if all else fails, turn your hypnosis show into a magic show. I didn't think a corporate client would find that very acceptable after they just flew me across the country when they could have just hired a magician instead. I remember traveling twelve hours to attend a hypnosis seminar from a noted stage hypnotist specifically to find out what to do when no one was hypnotized but still didn't get a satisfactory answer. I just couldn't believe that all these hypnotists got hired to do a show, just threw fate to the wind, and had absolutely no plan B to go with when things went wrong. And I don't care who you are. If you do anything enough times, eventually things will go wrong.
Geoffrey gives you a very detailed solution so you will never have to worry about what you are going to do if no one will volunteer, if no one gets hypnotized, or if none of the volunteers will respond to your suggestions and you have no show. Now you get a plan B that turns what could be a very awkward situation into a great show. I know first hand it's a solution that works because I have personally used this technique to save my reputation, and my dignity, and my show. As far as I am concerned, this information alone is priceless, as is everything else in the book. Run and get this book. I highly recommend it!

THE NEW GOLD STANDARD

Geoffrey Ronning has written the book all others will be compared to. The field of Stage Hypnosis has not seen a book quite this good ever before. One part detailed instruction manual, one part exercise work book, and one part collection of secret tips and inside tricks learned from a lifetime of practice as a full-time performing Stage Hypnotist, this book is the modern classic on the art of Comedy Stage Hypnosis.

There are only a handful of good books on Stage Hypnosis. While Ormond McGill's books, such as The Art of Stage Hypnotism and The New Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnotism are classics to be admired, they aren't particularly useful for the individual who wants to quickly learn Stage Hypnosis and begin performing shows. Jonathan Chase's Deeper and Deeper is a very good book, but it is nowhere near as thorough or complete as this new work by Ronning.

Well written, comprehensive and filled with immediately actionable tools and exercises, Stage Hypnosis by Geoffrey Ronning would be the # 1 recommended book I would suggest to the individual wanting to learn Stage Hypnosis and get started performing shows quickly.

It's been said that you can't learn to ride a bike by reading a book. And that is certainly true. But you can learn a great deal about Stage Hypnosis from this excellent book. I would say it's much more than a book, it is a Training Manual. If you will diligently study and apply what Ronning teaches in this book, you will have enough knowledge to begin performing Stage Hypnosis shows. Then get out there and perform a few shows to earn enough money to take Ronning's live training. The live training will give you confidence you cannot get from a book.

Highly recommended.

Best Program Ever... took us to the National Jr. Olympics in 1964!

I used the original book, from around 1962 - 1964, when I was on a swim team at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, and this little book helped take me and my teammates to the Junior Olympics National Championship in swimming and diving in the United States. This is how the world Olympic teams are chosen. My teammates and I were on that podium for our gold, silver and bronze medals three different times! All in the space of about 2 years or less, and I, too this day, attribute a great deal of that accomplishment to this little book that was first published in 1962.

That book, and the wonderful head coach and assistant coach who took care of us, taught us how to swim and how to achieve and how to win. They and the swim team at Lackland Air Force Base changed my entire life, right when I needed it most. I wish I could find these two men and thank them for changing and shaping my life! They are just about the only two left I haven't been able to find. If you are out there and reading this, please contact me! Catherine Todd (formerly Katie Scheffelin), ctodd1000 (at) gmail.com.

I have always remembered this program that I used to do when I was 14 years old, over forty years ago, and finally found the book again here on Amazon. Wish they would republish it! I bought a used one, but it is so old it is starting to fall apart.

In 11 minutes a day, this is absolutely the best workout program I have ever seen; no equipment needed, not much floor space required, and no additional time, in eleven minutes a day you just work up to doing "more" of the same exercises in the same amount of time.

I have no idea why this book fell out of favor; the book's not only cheap, the program itself is FREE. No memberships, no equipment, no fancy clothes: all you need is just this little list of exercises with little pictures to show you how to do it, and a healthy heart and wish to succeed. This program can be used by any age group, by everyone, anywhere, and at any time.

Now that I've had a bad back for years, and have lost most of my muscle tone, I know can start off at the lowest, easiest level and KNOW I will be able to easily and quickly work my way back up again, even after all this time. No injuries, no problems, guaranteed. I can't believe I found this back after all this time! I just wish the price wasn't so inflated for a paperback that cost just $1.00, way back when... I used it in 1962-1964!

Youth and beauty, here I come! :) smile!

Note: If you can't find or can't afford a copy of this book (and is long out of print), I just found a free download from Etcetera: http://etcetera000.blogspot.com/2008/04/5bx-plan-for-physical-fitness-for-men.html

An exercise program you can do in under 13 minutes, with no equipment at all and decades of research to back it up. Luckily I found my old yellow copy I picked up for .50 somewhere. If you can find a copy (try goodwill stores - it was a very popular book in the 60s. Over 4,000,000 were sold) grab it. To republish this is a no brainer - look at the reviews - who knows why it hasn't happened

For all those wishing they could find a new copy of the book, 2 DVD's of this programme have just launched in UK, called Total Fitness for Men / Women. Can't comment yet on actual results (New Year resolutions coming up though!), but it looks a very sensible, effective, and motivating approach that should shatter anyone's excuse (including mine) of 'I haven't got time'.

There is a real gap here for someone to re-issue the book still, not just for the exercises but to give for example updated info on eating guidelines etc. using the same sensible, uncomplicated approach as for exercising.

It changed my life!

I've been following the 5BX exercise plan since 1986, a long time ago. It is virtually free of cost, no frills & very effective. It incorporates practically all the theories in existence regarding increasing pulse rate, balancing aerobics with isometrics, warming up first etc. etc. And who cannot spare 11 minutes a day?
(I'm 45 & have been told that I look 35!)

Simply In Season (World Community Cookbook) is a cookbook that has a section for each season. Each section includes recipes made from ingredients in season. These recipes are health-conscious and mostly frugal. If you enjoy eating healthy and cooking/baking with fresh fruits and vegetables, this cookbook is for you.

Nicely done book. The book is broke down into four seasons. Each season has a list of vegetables along the outside edge on each page with the particular vegetable(s) used as ingredients in that recipe highlighted on that page. It makes it easy, for example, if you have broccoli and want some ideas on how to use it, flip the pages until you see broccoli highlighted and then read the recipe to see if if it something you are interested in. The recipes I have tried have been good.
A few more recipes with unusual vegetables would have been good because those are the ones I don't know what to do with. But over all a nice book. I would give it 4.5 stars.

This has become one of my favorite new cookbooks! We belong to a local CSA farm ... getting wonderful fresh organic vegetables ... and this little book has some of the best recipes. I highly recommend it. =)

Wheat and Dairy-Centric

While this book has a seasonal focus, it is so incredibly dairy and wheat-centric, one might think it was the product of the Dairy and Wheat Councils. I've never seen a book before that had such a high proportion of recipes that call for milk, dry milk, evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, buttermilk, wheat, and soy. You would expect to see these in recipes--- but not in almost everything! If you cannot have wheat or dairy, chance are that you won't be able to use a large segment of recipes in this book. If anyone in your family has food allergies (wheat and dairy being the most frequent), don't waste your money. I found the recipes often dated, unimaginative, imbalanced nutritionally, and a huge disappointment. Even their chili recipe called for sour cream. Swiss chard with milk? Good grief. So-called "Hearty Broccoli soup" has an entire quart of milk plus 1 cup cheese but only 2 cups of raw broccoli. That would be more aptly named "Milk Soup with Broccoli". I expected this book to be far more garden, fresh produce focused but it isn't. This book has been VERY over-rated.

What a treasure!

This is my new favorite !!! cookbook. I really wanted a cookbook that would help me use fruits and vegetables that are in season. Out of about 20-30 recipes that I've tried from this cookbook, I've loved all but about 2 of them which is pretty good I think. One of the pluses is that the recipes are generally naturally low in fat and in salt. I would give this cookbook the highest recommendation I can! It's even better than More with Less and Extending the Table (the other two World Community Cookbooks).

The principles of Somatics absolutely address all your aches and pains whereby you take control to put yourself back in place by training your muscles. Best if you can locate an instructor for class instruction to enhance the illustrations as well as add new exercises. It is most unfortunate that Thomas Hanna did not continue on earth to realize his contribution for so many.

The Somatic exercises have given me more fluidity and ease of movement that anything I've tried - Yoga, Pilates, Egoscue, physical therapy. I actually felt an amazing difference the first time I did these exercises. I continue to do them every day, I enjoy doing them because they allow me to move with far less discomfort and pain. The book may be a little challenging, but well worth the effort. Be sure to read it and then begin the exercises so you have a complete understanding of what the exercises are about and why they work. I'm recommending this book to everyone I know that has lower back/hip issues. The exercises have also been helpful in increasing the range of motion of my shoulder which was beginning to 'freeze up' for me. This book can change your life.

Hanna Somatics is very beneficial for all people. It really blows the "your just getting old" myth and is an easy method to feel better in your body at the same time as doing something to make it work better. It is easy reading and the pictures of the exercises at the end are helpful. However, the simplicity of the exercises does not translate well in the explanations, so it would be very helpful to find a Somatic Educator to go over the exercises with you once or twice. Well worth the price of the book.

I had severe chronic abdominal pain for the best part of a year. I had to quit my sport (rowing) and it really affected my studies. Truth is I was already beginning to realise that my problem was somatic and had begun to release the abdominal tension just by thinking about it. I discovered somatics after that. Personally I have found it an effective approach to releasing tension. It has worked for me but what I would like to know is whether it has worked for others?

The thing about this sort of book is that it is likely to attract positive reviews. We only see the successes and the failures are forgotten about thus distorting the reviews. Indeed this is a failure of the book itself. As a practitioner of somatics Hanna must have had people he could not help. What was their situation? How long did he work with them? As such the first part of the book which discusses case studies and its philosophical basis cannot be regarded as scientific. We can learn as much from failure as from success.

The only critical review at the time of writing is right to criticise the poor visibility of the skeleton diagrams. Others have criticised its lack of mention of the fact that there are people trained in somatic education. If you decide to take on the program then I advise you to go to someone trained in the movements otherwise you risk doing it wrong and wasting your time or at worst making your problem worse.

Somatics is not an alternative to Pilates or Yoga rather it takes certain aspects of those disciplines and refines them as well as adding some additional ideas not found in either. Pilates is about core stability, yoga is about... well yoga and somatics is about muscle tension. The book also fails to adequately put itself within context of other related disciplines.

Anyway, Somatics is a great discipline. I hope that the next edition works out these criticisms.

A friend recommended this to me after I had been incapacitated by back pain. I just woke up crippled by back pain one morning - the first time in my life. After weeks of doctors and little relief, I read the book and tried out the exercises. I immediately felt the benefits.

The book is organized as first, a series of case studies, which the author uses to illustrate his theory of muscle amnesia, followed by a series of illustrated exercises with detailed instructions. Anyone reading this book should first read the case studies before doing the exercises.

The author's objective is to help you reacquaint you with parts of your body that you have lost touch with - and therefore lost control of. He believes that much back and body pain is due to involuntary actions of muscle groups that we have forgotten how to control. By doing exercises and focusing on how they feel, we can regain sensation and control of our muscles. We can replace painful involuntary muscle actions with graceful voluntary ones.

All I can say is, the exercises - and theory - helped me, and I do the short version of the exercises most days. The exercises are not strenuous or painful - they are pleasurable and relaxing, leaving you feeling invigorated.
