i first read this book in the early '80's after stumbling across it in a remainder bin in a simpson-sears store in winnipeg. i feasted upon it as a person lost in a desert stumbling across a fresh water lake. it was, to my knowledge, (i could be wrong), one of the earliest, if not the first, books on how-to look great though big. this book changed my life, by telling me that i had a right to look & feel great & to be treated well in spite of my size. (how dare i want to be treated as though i deserved respect?!) my self-esteem rose 1000% after reading this book, a course that continues to this day. much of the book is about how to dress, which helped me find my style. i also loved the first the first part of the book about her own personal story with weight "problems" (percieved by the world at large (so to speak) not nessesarily her). it made me realize that i was not alone. i bought the extra copies in the remainder bin & gave them to my fat girlfriends. i love her for her courage in sharing her story & my copy remains on my shelf for when i need a self-esteem boost.

Dr. Stoppard's text is an accurate and up to date reference on the female breast. The sections on breast disease including breast cancer, and breast cancer treatment are excellent, providing valuable information on the latest techniques and treatments. The text also includes informative sections on the normal female breast, including breast development, sexual function, breast feeding, and breast self examinations.
This would be an excellent source for any woman seeking detailed information on breast health or disease. The level of information included would be of interest to lay persons and health care professionals.

blake's journey through the history of body piercing

As beauty is often said to be in the eye of the beholder, so history, it seems, is in the hand of the chronicler. This rings true of Blake's first book, A Brief History of the Evolution of Body Adornment in Western Culture: Ancient Origins and Today.
The first half of the book contains brief biographies and photo essays of several people Blake has named as heavily influencing the modern Western piercing community, in addition to other lesser-known characters important to his own history. Two early pioneers discussed, both born near the turn of the century, are Ethel Granger and the Great Omi. A thorough section with both images and words from Blake's guru Fakir is presented, followed by tributes to mentor Father Daniel Jensen and Blake's adventurous grandmother, Dr. Naomi Coval. He pays homage to these inspiring people with obvious affection and respect, as they have made a huge impact upon his life. This section has been peppered throughout with archival and artful black and white photographs of the personalities discussed, as well as color pictures from his pioneering grandmother's world travels rescued from her archives. The result is an insightful collection of memoirs, anecdotes, pictures, and quotes that combine to tell the history of body modification in the Western world as it has inspired both the industry in general and the author specifically.
The book switches gears when Blake steps in to tell his own highly personal account of his introduction and growth within the piercing industry. This autobiographical section gives the very casually written perspective of the author as he travels through the early stages of his career as a piercer. Taking credit for many advances and extremes in terms of larger piercings, he discusses freehand piercing and coins the term "tribal surgery" to describe the methods employed by himself and his colleagues.
The second half of the book contains an abridged cross-section of ethnic and historical piercing practices and jewelry from around the world. Most pieces depicted are from Blake's collection in the form of the Nomad Museum in Oregon, while select items from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and other famous museums demonstrate the prevalence of piercing practices and jewelry on all continents throughout the millennia. This section is only a brief introduction and does not delve very deeply into history, as the title suggests, primarily focusing on collectible jewelry that has survived from antiquity - though some contemporary practices and pieces are also shown.
Being quite familiar with cultural body modification practices and ethnic jewelry myself, I was wondering what new information this work would present. Unless one has passed through Bend recently to see the Nomad collections, A Brief History showcases a scrumptious array of ethnic piercing jewelry unpublished until now, cataloged here for posterity. While the anecdotes and chronology presented were primarily a useful review for me, most readers will find this an informative and easy to read introduction to the ethnographic and historic backgrounds that deserve our respect for significantly paving the way to where the practice of body art now stands.

A landmark exhibition

Suffering poses one of the central dilemmas of the modern age -- an era that, arguably, with its world wars and mass genocides has inflicted more of it and on a vaster scale than any other in recorded history. What meaning can human suffering have in a world paradoxically devoted to notions to salvation through technology, on the one hand, and, on the other, to an aesthetics of despair that, in the name of authenticity, refuses all invitations to hope?
"A Broken Beauty" boldly enters into this nexus with a presentation of contemporary figurative painting and sculpture that both engages with contemporary themes and, with equal if not greater daring, shows with what power and versatility classical artistic forms and iconography still speak to the human condition today.
There's nothing facile about the work or the attitude on display in these pages. The art of this landmark exhibition does not assume that Christianity, or that artists of faith have easy answers to either the dilemmas of modernity or to the ongoing crises of postmodernist aesthetics. What "A Broken Beauty" does assume is that classical Christian and artistic perspectives direct an important challenge to an art world that appears to have lost faith in itself, and, indeed, perhaps in the value of the artistic enterprise. In "A Broken Beauty," there is the fragmentation, the "brokenness," that is part and parcel of modern consciousness, but there is also beauty, the perception, however "darkly" glimpsed, of original wholeness, of the transcendent value of the body, and of human life itself.
While there is much to praise, the catalogue's essays, particularly the defining ones by editor Theodore Prescott and the exhibition's curator Gordon Fuglie, are worth the price of admission. They rarely settle arguments, but none of the five essays plays it safe, either; none casts anxious glances in the direction of the latest academic theories (that alone is refreshing!). Each essay is full-blooded, passionate and informative as it tries to situate this landmark effort in the context of its historical antecedents, and, even more importantly, in the context of today's profound aesthetic crisis. If we ever manage to free ourselves from the debilitations of a half century or more of the aesthetics of despair, it will be due to efforts such as this, to the kind of bravery and vision exhibited in "A Broken Beauty."

Truth, Goodness, and Beauty: Truth in Advertising

'C. S. Lewis as Philosopher: Truth, Goodness, and Beauty' is a valuable contribution to the critical literature of a neglected aspect of Lewis' work. Owen Barfield once said that everything Lewis thought was evident in anything he wrote; to get at the heart of his popular fiction, juvenile and adult, and his Christian apologetics, the Lewis reader needs to understand at least in part Lewis' philosophic positions because he was, by training and at least partially by disposition, a philosopher.
This collection of essays delivers on its promised explorations of Lewis' ideas about 'Truth, Goodness, and Beauty' in the breadth of its explorations, the depth and cogency of its arguments, the beauty of the book inside and out, and the clarity and crispness of the prose, which, though written predominantly by professional philosophers, is mercifully free of academic jargon.
Three essays I enjoyed very much and which stretched my thinking as well as my understanding and appreciation of Lewis were Victor Reppert's 'Update on Lewis' Argument from Reason,' Gregory Bassham's 'On the Power of the Imagination,' and Peter Kreeft's opening work on 'Truth, Goodness, and Beauty' that sets the engaging, challenging tone of the collection. What I learned from this fraction of the whole (a fifth!) justified many times the cost of the book.
Again, Lewis as Philosopher and Lewis as Social Critic are the neglected aspects of this brilliant Renaissance Man (as much as the Medievalist might have disliked that term). 'C. S. Lewis as Philosopher' is a valuable addition to the growing awareness of this don and his relevance in understanding virtue, art, and reality. I recommend it with enthusiasm to individuals who are serious readers of CSL and to libraries and schools with collections of Lewis' books, critical and fictional. This is a text to help the neophyte and scholar to a greater appreciation of those books.

Professional photographer Ronald Meyer along with his wife and co-author Diana Meyer present Casey Cougar, the de facto sequel to "Freddy Fox." Illustrated with breathtaking photographs of a young cougar as it grows up into an adult, Casey Cougar presents a simple story about growing up and setting out on one's own, enhanced by true-life facts about the species. "Climbing trees builds agility, balance and strong muscles. Casey often climbs the trees that grow next to the den. Playing tag helps develop hunting skills. Some lessons are learned at play; others through schooling." A simple yet warmhearted and timeless children's picturebook. Also highly recommended is "Freddy Fox", a similar coming-of-age tale starring a fox cub and featuring more of Ronald Meyer's eye-catching wildlife photography.
