I was so glad to see this book available. I have used Vedral's programs in the past and know they work. No gimmicks, no frills, etc.

The book includes the valuable wall chart of exercises. The pictures are easy to follow and simple hand weights are all you really need.

Thank you!!

Great routine

This is a great routine and the book is an easy-read that I found quite motivating. I was a bit discouraged, however, when I discovered how long the exercises actually take. It takes me 30 minutes to complete the "8-minute" routines. I would have actually felt more motivated had I been more adequately prepared to allow for the necessary time. That said, I commend Joyce for this book, which also includes a chapter on diet and a chapter on aerobic exercise. I am very encouraged that I may be able to prevent osteoporosis, and am recommending this book to my mom, who was recently diagnosed.

I bought the hardcover edition of this book used from Amazon and am very pleased with it. This is a very readable book, with most things clearly explained. When I say 'most', I mean that I still have questions as to WHY the pyramid method works better than other methods, and I also think it should be explained WHY the exact order of the workout matters (by body part, not by specific individual exercises within a body-part group). I am confused too because other books say to constantly vary your routine or to even change it completely every other week, where-as this book says that you must follow this exact routine every time. Aside from those points of confusion, the explanatory material is quite good. The work-out itself is excellent, and well suited to the woman who prefers a good at-home dumb-bell workout. Joyce must have the routine memorized, and do it without any rest periods at super-speed in order to finish within the time she says it will take. I have the extra time to put into it, so that is not a problem. If your goal is to build bone to prevent osteoporosis, this is a great program, or even if you just want to have a nice dumb-bell routine to build strength and re-shape, I also recommend it.

Great Workout ...but you need more time

I bought this book because I have the 12-minute Total Body Workout by Vedral and I wanted to see if she had updated her excercises. I was very pleased with this book, the exercises are easy to learn and they work! However, there is no way you can do it in 8 minutes a day without sacrificing proper movement and form. Plan on spending between 15 and 20 minutes per day for four days, 30-40 minutes per day for two days, or about 1 1/2 hours for one day. In the 12-Minute book, you did 2 body parts, 2 exercises each, for 3 reps. In this book, it's 3 body parts, at least 3 exercises each, 3 reps each plus stretching. How on earth did she think you could do it in 8 minutes?

Easy-to-read book with a good workout, and eating advice.

This workout is great, although you may want to do ALL the designated warm-up exercises at the beginning of the workout, in order to avoid wasting time picking up and putting down the dumbbells between sections. If you do this I think it would be much easier to get the workout time down to where the book claims it should be.

I own The 12-Minute Total Body Workout book, and in one respect, this book is better in that it contains a photo chart of all the exercises involved, which "12-Minute" does NOT have. I recommend that you buy a copy of this book, make a copy of the chart, then cut it up and paste each exercise onto index cards, so that you can mix up the order of the exercises every few weeks or so, as well as putting the warmups at the beginning of the workout.

Both books are great.

At first glance I was already excited to make the patterns in this book! It offers a great variety of items, along with complete outfits. The best part is the writing of the patterns. They are written with very clear step by step directions. The reference guide included explains in words and pictures how to do everything from the basics to the advanced techniques. EVERYTHING you need to know is explained in this book, allowing you to simply pick up the book and start knitting!

This is a great book. I've already made the Vintage Hat and plan to make the Lacy Scarf to coordinate. Another of my favorites is the Funnel Neck Sleeveless Top. It's such a classic timeless design as are all of the other designs in the book. One of the favorites in my book collection!

The truth is in the details
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-17
Devon Cass takes celebrity impersonators (who run the gamut from looking somewhat like the celeb to being virtually identical) and shows how they create the look. I was surprised by the detail that goes into every makeup job; sometimes it's not the gross features but the little things -- tiny birthmarks, dimples, the line of the lower lip -- that bring out the similarity.

I found it useful (I've worked as a Fergie lookalike in the past) and also entertaining. Highly recommended

Incredible transformations, a bit slim on the details

Review Date: 2000-11-12
This book is an incredible photographic documentation of the power of makeup, etc; and you will understand how much you can transform yourself when you see Devon Cass turn himself into Cher. Many of the transformations are just incredible--in particular my jaw dropped at Cher, the guy who did Marilyn, and the woman who did Mariah Carey. And there is lots of information on how to get there, with fascinating half-face makeup shots, advice on wardrobe, and even famous lines of the stars to give you something to say once you've gotten there. I dare say, though, that this book is, for most people, going to be something to gawk at rather than a guide to a halloween costume. Too often necessary details are missing--you are told what to get, then sometimes it is kind of "then go ahead and put it on the way Cher does"....not all that helpful all the time. But still, there's tons here, and lots of people will enjoy this book--I'd heartily recommend it for all you crossdressers out there; buy two and give one to a friend!

Buy this book and be AMAZED at the transformative powers of makeup, clothes, hair, etc. to create indelible images.

Required Reference

The decade-by-decade images from all the books in this series are, IMHO, required references for those interested in fashion and costume design in the 20th century.

Good overview for the price.

I have to agree with the other reviewers. Modern fashion tends to look "dumbed down". I've owned this book for some time and refer to it often. Not to copy, necessarily; but to find inspiration. There are clothes available that still look "classic". Many of the original Sears pictures were in color but are reproduced here in b&w. Many of the reproductions have an overly fuzzy look. I suppose that's why the book is only $15 instead of 2 or 3 times as much. The Schiffer Sears series has sharp color images but you pay twice as much. You could buy the original Sears catalogs on eBay (I have a few) for even more. Your choice. This book will give you a good overview of the fashion changes during the decade and you can take it from there. Also of note are the accessories. A New Deal/FDR watch! A Buck Rogers watch! This isn't camp, either, but back in the days when this was serious stuff. Highly recommended!

I own four books in this 'Searies' (Twenties, Thirties, Forties, Fifties) and I cannot recommend them highly enough. They are jam-packed with a great mix of pictures in good proportion which show the morphing of fashions over the decade(s). Dominant are women's clothing (formal, casual, dresses, hats, coats, shoes, with some undergarments, sportswear, nightwear, swimwear). Then there are smatterings of accessories (handbags, watches, gloves, powder compacts, belts, jewelry). Also some menswear and a small amount of childrenswear. All clothing is being worn.

All pictures are black and white and have a certain (pleasant) level of graininess. What you get are the original pictures, prices and descriptions from the catalogs. There is only a very small amount of introductory material (just a one page 'Publisher's Note' for the Thirties).

Changes over the series:
The transition from drawings (all very good and realistic) to photos occurs in the Thirties.
The variety of accessories appearing in the Twenties is largely reduced by the later decades (Fifties almost exclusively clothing and hats with some shoes).

There's only one problem with these catalogs...you can't order the contents!

Purchased this book soon after it was published in a Baltimore art museum.

Modern Fashions and hairstyles today reveal absolute mediocrity. No style. No class. More to offend the eye than to please. Trousered females with short cropped hair and men whose hair is unkept wearing garments ill made. Swimsuits that leave nothing to the imagination worn by people who one just wishes were not visable because they keep themselvs as they do their awful cloths.

This book is a treat to the eye. Wonderful cloths that show modern apparel was not alawys the norm.

For the student of History this book is a valuable source of information on the cloths of the period, for which I purchased my copy. No scoloarly work but merely taken from the Sears catalogs of the time. Undergarments and accessories, shoes to hats, everything is shown here.

Gorgeous, immersive, beautifully put together!

If you want a comprehensive book that immerses you in the world of fashion from the thirties, this is the one. It is authentic and beautifully laid out and depicts numerous costume items from the thirties, though mostly focusing on women. The pictures depict everything from dresses to shoes, hats to gloves; the women's hairstyles, makeup, undergarments, and overall looks give the reader the most authentic possible view of fashion and the aesthetic ideals of the time. The catalogue also shows the prices and features descriptions that include fabric and color. There are some pictures of men's and children's fashions. This book is thorough and unbelievably beautiful. The whole series of Sears catalogue fashions by decade is amazing. I recommend them all!

This is a cute book with a great message. While many "green" books give you long list of dos and don't (mostly don'ts!), Green Chic goes further. Author Christie Matheson goes into great detail as to the why that making environmentally friendly choices makes a difference. She is not at all about appearances, but is definitely all about the change of mindset and attitude.

The best part of this book is that Matheson offers very doable tips to make small changes that almost anyone can handle that make a major impact in our world.

Just for starters im 23 yrs old, and am apart of the generation that is really catching on to green living. Im also a major "tree hugger" as my family would call me lol. I love to do anything i can to help our environment, and that includes getting family members to start doing it to. So i have over the past two years bought several books. This one is my absolute favorite! this is perfect for anyone around my age or younger who wants to start going green! In this book it felt like the author really got down to some honest things we do that are hurting our planet without realizing we are doing it! Her words are truly inspiring. I thought i had this whole green living completely figured out, The author points out some things that im even guilty of. This book gave easy, simple and effective soulutions to living green without huge efforts or spending alot of money. The author of this book did a amazing job. I am so Happy i found this, i have three friends who went out and bought it and are now doing their part to live green. I have given it to two friends as part of their birthday gifts and they got back to me and told me they had finished it in less than two days. Fair price for such a Great Book! buy this book! you wont be let down.

This is exaclty what you would expect frm a klutz book. Easy to follow concise instructions. Easy instructions and easy to do are not the same thing, this is a very time consuming activity. It takes a bit to get the hang of it and then a good little bit of time to do the entire wrap. Granted my girls have very, very long hair. If the idea looks fun to you then you will like the book.

This book is just full of good information you need to know but aren't taught anywhere. I'm a man and I know that I look and feel more confident when I look as good as I can. This book tells you how to do that and it's practical too...not flashy - just classy. It's nice to know that my favorite shirts are broadcloth material - I now look for them in the stores or online. That standard shoes should include loafers, boots and a pair of wing tips - none of which I had before - but I do now - and they look great. That you should pay attention to the watch you wear - because others do. That you should wash your face twice a day, that you should shave after the shower so the room is steamy...If you are wanting to change your image to one of a well groomed, well dressed man, reading this book is a great start.

A whole new look...

MAKE OVER YOUR MAN is a beautiful instructional book guiding women on how to dressing the men in their lives. The intent of the book is to take the average boring wardrobe and transform it into a whole new look bringing out the best in your man. It covers every wardrobe imaginable, even down to the basics, and offers tips on things such as manicures and pedicures, organizing a man's closet, and how to tie a perfect tie. Chapter by chapter, the book offers tips, instructions, charts, photographs and even one-on-one celebrity makeovers to give you all the tools necessary to arm yourself against readying your man for a whole new look. Some of the celebrity makeovers include Tyra Banks and her dad Don Banks, Patti LaBelle and her son Zuri Edwards, and Star Jones with three male friends.

I'd recommend this book to both men and women as a "must have book" that details fashion in a way that isn't boring, but instead colorful, fun, and takes the work out of convincing the guy in your life that a change is needed. The photography helps this book stand out from others sitting on the shelves.

I bought this for myself (I am a man) because I saw excerpts on msn and I thought the writing style was excellent. The book did not disappoint. It reads well, has a lot of nice photos and a listing of merchants in the back. I would not follow the author's advice to the letter, because we all have different styles, but I picked up a lot of helpful information. Although I have always enjoyed shopping for clothes, I ended up with too many clothes, rather than just enough high quality items. I do think the book will have to come out every two or three years with new editions as styles change. For instance, Boston now champions flat front pants instead of pleats and leather soles rather than rubber. In general, he laments dressing down or "business casual." These things change, although he definitely stays away from trendy fashions in favor of more traditional garb. A thoroughly enjoyable and well-written book.

When I heard that your second book was coming out, I was so overjoyed. I just finished reading it on yesterday and wanted to write just to say thank you! You are definitely a God-send. I want you to know that your material and advice has helped cultivate who I have become in terms of my appearance. I didn't come from a "rich" background, from childhood I always dreamed that after I got my education, I wanted to have the appearance of all of those I had admired through the years. Your book has and will help me make the right decisions in regard to what to wear, when to wear, how to wear. I have just moved to a metropolitan area and "image is everything." I am so self-concious at times because I am from Oklahoma and we don't know the first thing about dressing. Moving, I feel so countrified when I go out, I never know if I am fitting in or not. Thanks for the time and effort you put in to helping "brothers" out on what they need to do. "Make Over Your Man," has helped me achieve an inspiration and confidence I need to continue to assert myself. Kudos to you!

This is the must-have book for any man!

Let me just say that I found this to be a great book. Now, I am not a woman, but in truth a man can benefit enormously from reading this book. I found this book to be very informative, both in its broad outlines and in its details. I think that this is a great book, and I highly recommend it!

The gorgeous illustrations add to the charming cuteness of the book. These quotes show that there is real meaning and philosophy behind fashion and it's form of self-expression. Clothes and appearance really do make a difference!
An essential book for fashionistas. I shall cherish this book forever!

Toby Tobias' adorable book takes the questioning element out of my daily clothing puzzle. This morning, Edith Sitwell told me to 'be myself'! The in-put from great minds of the past is a radiant rainbow of fun, humor, delight and wit. Ballerina@Large.Dash-Dot

Tobi Tobias' new book, Obsessed by Dress, brings delight far beyond the sensual pleasure of holding a book that is exactly the right hand heft for the object itself. It corroborates ones joy of personal adornment through quotes from those who have the wit and style through the ages to say what you have been thinking and feeling all along about why have arrived a this particular persona. You become marvelous in your own eyes.

One doesn't have to be a clothing aficionado to have a rewarding time with Tobi Tobias's "Obsessed By Dress." A small-size book with a biggness of content, "Obsessed" is alive with famous-person clothing quotes, meticulously researched by Tobias, reflecting her passion for Dress and great writing. Dickens, Proust, Virgil, Keats, Dior, Dorothy Parker, and RuPaul are among those quoted.

This is a lovely book, full of wit and surprises. It's obvious that Tobias has chosen quotes from books with which she is familiar, rather than compiling a hodgepodge of witty bon mots, selected at random. The bonus, in addition to making one think about fashion and its place in civilization, is reminders of books one has read, or wants to read, or should.

Armed with a few quotes from this book and a little black dress, one could conquer any cocktail party in fine style!
