This is a great resource for costume designers and anyone else wanting to capture the look of a particular period. The drawings are detailed and include men's and women's styles for each year from the 1920s to the 1980s. Examples include evening wear, daywear, sportswear, and even underwear and wedding fashions. Accessories (hats, shoes, handbags) are also pictured. Plenty can be learned just from looking at the pictures, although the descriptions that follow help to summarize the particulars of line, fabrics, etc. Very easy to use. I LOVE this book and will refer to it often in my work. I wish Peacock would do one for earlier fashions.

A must have for the cook or gardener

You can tell that Maggie Stuckey is both a gardener and a cook. And, while the recipes, of which there are 200 for the 30 Spices listed, are enticing, it is her sense of history that I thoroughly enjoyed. Written concisely and clearly, her storytelling takes us back to the the lands and people who first enjoyed these spices.  We came across this book while looking for information on Cardamom and were hooked by the time we reached the entry for Elettaria Cardamomum. The spices ,and the recipes for those spices, included in this book are: Allspice, Anise, Caraway, Cayenne and Chili Peppers, Cinnamon, Cloves,  Coriander, Cumin, Dill Seeds, Fennel, Fenugreek, Ginger, Horseradish, Juniper Berries, Mace, Mustard Seeds, Nutmeg, Paprika, Pepper, Poppy Seeds, Saffron, Sesame Seeds, Star Anise, Tumeric, Vanilla. Also, conveniently included are the recipes for Curry Powder and Five-Spice Powder.

This would be a great shower or wedding gift

This is a very quick and enjoyable read. It is clear almost to the point of being textbook, but with a humor that makes it fun rather than dry. Each spice gets a chapter. Infomation on each spice includes history and legend, current medicinal uses, crafts and household uses, as well as other interesting factual tidbits about the spices such as the coffe rituals of Arab cultures. And, of course, there are recipes that you can nearly taste as you read them. I checked this out of the library and now I am buying it for my own reference collection of cookbooks. It would be a great gift for anyone who cooks (or wants to learn).

I am quite thankful for this book and its many valuable tips. I recently had liposuction and feel that had I not reviewed some of the information for recovery, I might have been in greater discomfort. You don't really understand what it will be like until you become a patient, but I can tell that the author is a patient as she is extremely thorough with her realistic and helpful explanations. I highly recommend this book.

A great book for anyone who is considering cosmetic surgery

With all of the hype about cosmetic surgery I have found it very difficult to get impartial and informative assistance on selecting a physician who best meets my needs. I had also never considered the importance of selecting an accredited surgical facility-but as I researched the horror stories and read the book, I realized this decision can be as important as selecting the right physician. The detailed information on what to expect before and after surgery was very helpful. A must read if you are considering cosmetic surgery!

A beautiful and enriching tour
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-04
Costume, Textiles And Jewellery Of India: Traditions In Rajasthan is a wondrously informative exploration of traditional Indian attire. Lavishly illustrated with full color photographs on every page, Costume, Textiles And Jewellery Of India reveals how Indian attire proclaims one's place of origin, social position, marital status, occupation, religious affiliations, and even reflections on the changing seasons as well as other psychological aspects of day-to-day life. Information drawn from fifteen years of dedicated research is transformed into a highly accessible and wondrous tour of the physical, historical, trade, cultural and spiritual factors inherent in Indian textiles. A beautiful and enriching tour as eye-catching for lay readers as it is for serious-minded garment designers understanding and inspiration in India's ancient traditions.

social meanings of Indian garments

Review Date: 2005-03-01
The Indian clothing expert Bhandari does a tour de force. Nothing is left out--from origins of and historical influences on Indian garb to materials and manufacture; from basic clothing to the variety of ornaments and accessories; from jewelry and bracelets to class and ethnic wear. The often exotic Indian clothing so noticeable to outsiders does not basically reflect the fashion tastes or personality of the wearer, but instead mainly denotes social station and sometimes occupation. As expected, the more sumptuous clothing and jewelry goes with those of higher class. But the typical clothing of farmers, laborers, and lower-class Indians is also colorful and elaborate in its own way. Rajasthan in northwestern India was chosen as the focus for this one-of-a-kind work because of its historical and cultural significance and the mix of different classes and ethnic groups found there. The Indian state's name is derived from Rajputs, or "sons of kings." Bhandari's meticulous text is so fascinating and endlessly informative that one is hardly conscious of the exhaustive scholarship and research going into it. Often noting measurements, techniques used by the clothing makers, how an article is worn, and what is signifies, the text nonetheless does not strike one as being technical since it deals with such a colorful subject. Readers will fall into a pattern of looking at the attractive, rich color photographs and occasional illustrations and diagrams as they come, and then going to the text to find what interesting facts and points the author has on the items the men and women are wearing. Many readers will try to put their growing knowledge to work to guess social status of the individuals shown and the meanings of their accouterments. The descriptive captions should not be glossed over either. The color photo of one man notes that his "sword denotes his royal lineage, the silk tie [around it] signifying that it is carried in peace." But one of the countless bits of social and cultural lore one learns is the significance of turbans in family relationships and relationships with others. A four-page glossary of hundreds of terms testifies to the complexity of Indian clothing. This is a remarkable work with its generous fund of knowledge, skilled organization, and magnetic appearance.

GREAT! book I ever read
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-23
The book's clear instructions and color photographs are excellent. However, procedures used are extremely time-consuming and require a lot of hands-on work. Basically, they're industrial techniques adapted for home use. Entirely different from making cold process bar soaps. Even for experienced hot process soap makers, at least 3-4 hours are needed to complete the initial phase. In the recipes, you have to be comfortable with using solvents and thickeners. Neutralizing and sequestering agents too. pH control and preservatives can be significant issues as well. Aside from that, you won't find a better consumer-level book on this interesting subject. GREAT book!

I'm quite confused by the reviewer who indicated that this book is filled with extremely difficult and time-consuming industrial techniques. I think she may be reviewing an entirely different book! On the contrary, the recipes here are easy, accessible, and suitable for beginners of all ages and skill levels. In fact, the instructions for the vast majority of the recipes are along the lines of, "Combine the ingredients in a prepared container and blend well." The most "complicated" of all the recipes merely involves melting ingredients in a double-boiler or microwave. Many other books with do-it-yourself recipes are challenging; this really is not one of them.

As an aromatherapy educator, a natural health and beauty product fanatic, and a make-your-own products junkie, I love this pretty book filled with simple recipes and beautiful treatments. I must have a dozen books on creating natural beauty products at home, but I find myself turning to this one again and again, not only for the variety and simplicity of the recipes but for the gorgeous, pampering results!

The book is organized into groups of recipes for the face (masks, toners, moisturizers), body (cleansers, scrubs), hands & feet (creams, balms, nail conditioners), and hair (shampoos, conditioners, herbal rinses). The "face" section also features a wonderful assortment of fun and easy tooth powders, mouthwashes, and lip butters, too.

A chapter on getting started introduces ingredients, preparation techniques, and gets the reader comfortable with the highly addictive process of creating all-natural alternatives to chemical-laden and outrageously priced commercial lotions and potions. A glossary defines terms, and a list of resources provides ideas for where to purchase the items called for in the recipes, although this should not be a problem. Most items are very easily found at grocery or natural health stores (spices, herbs, essential oils, oats, sweet almond oil, witch hazel, rose water, and the like).

Some of my favorite treats include Almond & Jojoba Lip Butter, Cinnamon & Clove Mouthwash, Sweet Citrus Body Polish, Sandalwood & Lavender Hair Treatment Gel, Lemon & Rosewood Hand Oil, Rose Geranium Bubble Bath, Herbal Bath Sachets, and many, many more.

Your skin, hair, and nails will thank you for getting this book.

Kathy Wilmore's entertaining examination of the wigmaker's trade in colonial times introduces readers to the life of a wigmaker from apprentice, to journeyman, and finally to master wigmaker. Young readers will come away with a solid understanding of a wigmaker's day, the workings of the shop, including a description of the actual preparation and completion of a wig. The illustrations are awesome.

There is a glossary and list of web sites for further study included.

This book is very highly recommended.

What if the seven dwarfs had been Deafy, Wheezy, Baldy, Nifty, Swift, Lazy, and Burpy? Believe it or not, these are actual names animators considered for the dwarfs in Snow White. This fun fact and a wealth of other information can be found in Bob Thomas's comprehensive journey into the world of Disney animation. The first half of the book is a history of Disney animation starting with Oswald the Rabbit, Mickey's predecessor, and going all the way through 1990's The Rescuers Down Under. The second half of the book is a detailed look into the making of the Disney classic Beauty and the Beast. This book is filled with beautiful pictures and sketches from all of the Disney animated films through Beauty and the Beast. Any Disney lover will be intrigued and entertained

Great book for Disney fans. :)

In Disney's Art of Animation, Thomas explains the birth of the Walt Disney co., from a handful of people meeting in a home, to the huge Disney phenomenon we know today. The first half of the book explains the formative years of Disney, from before Mickey's time. This book looks into facts about the films themselves from an outside veiw. It keeps its eye on the whole company as it struggled along through the 30's, 40's, and even 50's. It talks about pre-Snow White cartoons and all of the full length feture films from Snow White to 1990's Rescures Down Under. The last half Explains the process of creating a modern animated film from the standpoint of many of the people who had an infleuance creating the only Disney Picture to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy AwardsÐBeauty and the Beast. Thomas explains how each aspect of the film is created and consolidated into one final, breathtaking work. An excellent book for anyone intrested in animation and, not to mention, a Disney fan's wish come true.
