This is an excellent book on the beautiful and inspiring paintings of Russian artist Nicholas Roerich. Exceptional value with 88 colour reproductions of his work. The written material is faultless and fascinating. Roerich was dedicated to Beauty and I find that whenever I dip into this book I am completely captivated by his ability to speak to my innermost heart and spirit through the language of colour and the rich symbolism of his paintings. Fascinated by the legends of Shambhala and the wisdom of the ancients, Roerich's paintings and Decter's words take us on a wonderful journey that will enrich our lives. Roerich was a very deeply spiritual man and so his paintings serve this higher purpose. If you wish to light the inner fire of your spirit through art and beauty, then this is the book for you.

A fascinating biograpy with over 80 paintings reproduced.

If you are looking for a book about the life and art of Nicholas Roerich or if you are looking for a fascinating account of a modern mystic, one of the great men of this time, this is it. The book contains over 80 of his paintings, drawings and theatrical set designs. The biographical accounting is fascinating and inspiring. I found this book very enjoyable and highly recommend it. Also suggest checking out the web site of the Nicholas Roerich museum in N.Y. city. Paul Huston

This is an exquisitely beautiful book and immediately transports one to 'another dimention'. Roerich's paintings, his unusual use of colour and hues capture a luminous quality that speaks to the soul. His writing, paintings and travels are a true inspiration of the human spirit.

Geared for the professional, this book will round out basic knowledge and is very helpful.

My book arrived bent and rumpled just thrown in a box, unlike AMAZON'S usual great service.

After calling they did replace the book immediatly, the second book came shrink wrapped and packed properly.

These things happen and Amazon is great at rectifying them.

great book for any new esthetician!

Minji's mom has gone to the beauty salon for a haircut and color. Not content to wait idly at home for her mother's return, Minji decides to give the family dog a makeover as well. Just as the stylist and mother go through the steps of choosing a new style, mixing and applying the color, and adding the finishing touches, Minji and the dog do the same at home. While mother leaves the salon with an impeccable new hairdo, Minji's home-based services create a rather messy surprise.

This creative new book, first published in South Korea, gets top marks for its amusing story-line and expressive illustrations. Minji's Salon also does a nice job teaching children about professional businesses that provide services. One of the classic examples in economics textbooks of services is haircuts. This book takes the classic example and runs with it in an imaginative way, to the delight of young readers.

Minji's Salon is a cute picture book from South Korea. In it a little girl styles her dog at the same time her mother is at the salon. The pictures are beautiful and it is so nice to see a child from South Korea! I like to present books with children from other cultures to my children. My son really liked the way the dog turned out with all the colors. Much of the story is told in pictures. I think it is nice for children, not quite reading, to be able to page through and imagine the story without feeling like they are missing all the words.

Minji's Salon is a charming tale of a little girl who has fun playing beauty salon while her mother is off getting her hair done. It is told as a parallel tale. On the left we wordlessly see Minji's mother at a tres chic establishment being pampered. On the right is Minji making quite the mess while she performs her version of the same beauty treatment on her long-suffering pooch. Mother comes home to quite a surprise! The illustrations are a quirky delight. Also available in Spanish as El salon de Minji.

I grew up with this book and I adore it. I've yet to find anything even CLOSE to this book- it's amazing.

There are clear line drawings, four to a page, for each fashion cycle- sometimes as little as 5 years, sometimes a thousand years apart. The shifts and transformation in styles are made clear, and the notes about what colors, fabrics, and cuts were popular are amazing.

This is THE ULTIMATE guide to historical fashion and if it's not reprinted, it's a damn shame.

Have been using it for 35 years

NOTHING beats Wilcox's various costume books. They are invaluable references for designers, costumers, teachers and historians. I wish they would reprint them again. I constantly recommend them, especially THE MODE IN COSTUME. And the clear simple line drawings copy and scan better than any others I have ever come across. I would LOVE a digital version of this book.

a remarkable, innovative work
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-03
This is a remarkable, innovative work, one which subverts the knee-jerk feminist vision of plastic surgery as catering to the worst vanity and anxieties of women. Dr. Eskenazi saw the gap between the 'cosmetic' and 'reconstructive' sides of her surgical practice radically diminish, as she listened to the narratives of female patients who came in search of both physical and spiritual renewal. Only a very few were addicted -- like Michael Jackson -- to some vision of aesthetic perfection. Rather, most sought surgical intervention as a 'rite of passage', after a particular life crisis or change, be it the childbirth or menopause, divorce or the loss of children.

Dr. Eskenazi provides a powerful critique of the mind/body polarity, and has argued for a vision of the 'embodied self' by describing the psychic transformations that even a dose of botox can have on a woman who had involuntarily frowned for most of her life. Her work defies normal disciplinary boundaries and brings anthropology, philosophy and medicine together. Male plastic surgeons do not reflect on their medical practice in this way, while anthropologists observe, rather than participate in, the process of healing and renewal that Dr. Eskenazi hopes to provide.

Do not expect an apology for plastic surgery. This is a demanding analysis, well-written and cogently argued. She suggests that the popularity of plastic surgery has increased because of the loss of other social and cultural 'rites of passage', reflecting a yearning for rejuvenation that our consumerist world cannot provide.

A radical re-visioning

More Than Skin Deep is a 'radical re-visioning' of a topic that conventionally represents a self-betrayal of women. Here is a bold and startlingly new idea: plastic surgery as a chosen rite of passage, in which the woman making the choice is willing to undergo an ordeal for the purposes of sself-transformation. It has taken me by surprise and made me question many of my own attitudes. Dr. Eskenazi's views are cogently argued, compassionately presented, and quite tender in their understanding of a woman's life."

For anyone curious about the relationship between plastic surgery and society

When I had my plastic surgery, I knew I just wanted to look better. Therefore I was quite surprised by all the changes in my life that occurred after the surgery. This book answered many of my questions about my confusing and exciting experiences by putting plastic surgery in the larger context of personal transformation and ritual within a community. My hat is off to Dr. Eskenazi for framing the issue of plastic surgery as larger than the simple quest for beauty. Using her firsthand experience as a plastic surgeon, she eloquently makes the point--more is going on here, there is substance beneath the surface. As growing numbers of people go under the knife and afterwards try to make sense of their experience, books like this will be sorely needed.

Great Basics Book of major muscles and their function

Review Date: 2005-09-15
This is a great book for the novice to see the major muscles and how they work in the body or for the more advanced anatomist that would like a review/quick look at them. Information is not dumbed down though just gives you the basic facts and a little extra to help put things in perspective and give you a better big picture understanding. Like that the pictures are clear. I love that he has practical applications sections on each like "body language weakness" which explains how one would act or look if have a weakness in certain muscle and "watch out" which explains movements that can injure the muscle discussed. Plus the other interesting helpful blurs like he explains the origin of the name. Definitely recommend this book.

Other good A&P books: Trail Guide to the Body, Anatomy of Movement, Guide to the Human Body (by Richard Walker - is a pocket sized book with a page or two page spread on each system), clinical anatomy made ridiculously simple (some of the info in this is distorted because dumbed down but gets the big pictures across)

Information packed and easy to understand.

This is a great book. If you are intrested in this topic, this is deffinitely the book to buy! It provides basic recipes which you customize, and specific recipes. It also includes great charts that tell how herbs, oils, and more benefit your skin, nails, and hair. Additionally, instructions for massages, manicures and more are included. All the recipes are fast, easy, and fun, and the ingredients are cheap and easy to find.

Great for those with sensitive skin

I am very fair with sensitive skin that reacts to many skincare products by breaking out, drying out or turning reddish. I have found some of the cleansers, toners and masks to be very good for my skin and it has improved after only one week of faithful use of the natural ingredients in the book. There are charts in the book which show what is best for different types of skin so you can tailor your recipes to get exactly what is best for your skin. I do like the smell and consistency of commercially prepared products better, but the additives and perfumes were part of the reason I was having problems with my skin. Before reading this book, I had no idea how many common ingredients can be good for my skin. The book is well worth buying just for the skincare recipes, but the hair and nail care recipes are also well worth trying. Another benefit is the savings. By using the ingredients in the book, I can save alot of money.

Great fun and lots of good info

I'm thoroughly enjoying reading and trying out the recipes in this book. Ms. Duff's directions are absolutely foolproof, her ingredients are easy to find. Recipes are easy and effective and the information she provides (e.g. the charts on what herbs or ingredients to use for each skin type and hair type) is so very useful. Once you try beauty products from this book, you will never settle for the inferiority of commercially produced cosmetics (yes, that includes Shiseido, Christian Dior and Lancome!).

Excellent book. It takes you back to a different era, when tattoo shops were only on the rough side of town, and the tattooers were salty old dogs who took no guff from anyone. Full of humor in the recollections of many well respected old-timers. Very interesting to see the slight differences in recollection, by the subjects' memories of things that happened. Excellent prints of traditional flash and old photos.

So few texts have been written based on quality research into old-school/traditional style tattoos, but this one stands out as a shining example. Wonderfully laid out, providing both a historic, relationship, and spatial vision of what the tattoo culture was from just before WW 2 until the late 60's.

Excellent, and I highly recommend for anyone's collection.

It may seem funny to speak of high fashion as being a subject for patriotic pride, but in fact, Americans don't need to look across the Atlantic for great couturiers; there are plenty of 'em in the Big Apple! Caroline Rennolds Millbank, who's also written the excellent _Couture_ and _The Couture Accessory_, turns her attention to the great designers, past and present, of the New York fashion scene. She reminds us all that Paris and Milan are not the only places that can produce superb couture, with hundreds of splendid B&W and color photographs (many in full-page format) and in-depth commentary on American designers from Mainbocher to Norell to McCardell. Kudos to Milbank for looking at great designers who aren't covered as often as they should be in books.
