Oooh-la la! Just what shopaholics and shopophobics need to make sense of the mall madness! Industry insider Susan Redstone offers a shopping plan and fashion formula that removes the guess-work and haphazard-ness of the shopping experience--and helps us guard against our dangerous impulses that only lead to shopper's remorse. The style is fun, down-to-earth and engaging. The first purchase every gal should make for 2008 is Ms. Redstone;s "Just Try It On!"

I thought this book would be a good purchase after a quick glance through it. I am now about three-quarters of the way through and I have decided I think it is one of the best books on fashion out there, and I have read almost every single one. Redstone seriously knows her stuff. This book will teach you when all the best merchandise hits the stores, and Redstone counsels you on when to spend and when to hold off. For someone who generally is an impulse buyer and needs to control her spending, this book truly helps put together a fashion budget and timeline. There is so much detail in here, from what color sunglasses go with what hair color, to figuring out just how fancy you need to go for an occasion. If you are someone who loves pictures, there are none here for you; however, I highly recommend you make the purchase and read it.

One trick I have already tried this week was the "two bag theory." I selected a smaller purse in which I put my essentials, and fit it inside a larger bag that holds everything else I need for work. It is so much easier and more stylish that carrying 2 bags all the time!

Redstone's objective it to help the reader determine the best time of year to shop for key items. She breaks down the merchandising schedule by month so shoppers know when the latest looks in certain items will hit stores. In addition, Redstone gives great tips on selecting pieces to cultivate one's personal style.

If you're familiar with Tim Gunn, Redstone's catch phrase ("Just Try It On") sounds a bit contrived. But this book is a great complement to Gunn's Guide because Redstone goes in-depth with certain things that Tim Gunn only mentions. For example, Tim Gunn has a chapter about accessories, but Redstone has several, discussing jewelry (including a watch wardrobe), shoes, handbags, sunglasses.

Overall, highly recommended.

An overwhelming deluge of billboard-sized Krazy Kat dailies...

Often the unexpected makes life worth living. Day by day, we roll along acquiescing in the eternal routine that inexorably mashes down time like a rolling pin over muffin dough. Then suddenly a protrusion. Wham! Something interrupts the seemingly unimpediable passage of the inevitable. Pull back the dough. A diamond. A multi-karatted glittering sparkler. Endorphins rush to pleasure centers. Eyes bulge. Tongue wags. Hopefully a full stomach maintains consciousness. If not, then plop and give in to the ecstasy. Such an event doesn't occur often. Something from nowhere has disrupted harsh workaday realities. Hope! Meaning! Such startling events probably filled the lives of Krazy Kat Konnoiseurs the nanosecond their retinas processed this sumptuous delectable volume of Golden Fleece daily strips. And who can blame them? This enormous hardcover coffee table sized miracle delights with every page. And who knew? Fantagraphics spread no rumors about printing dailies, perhaps to keep fans from vaporizing into submissive joy. The cover itself is an aesthetic wonder well worth a few million eye scans. But the strips inside, laid out like billboards two to a page, emblazoned almost in original size, might make some feel like they didn't pay enough for this shock to the system.

Krazy Kat dailies of any kind remain elusive. A few sparse collections exist compliments of Stinging Monkey (who apparently have more installments planned) and Pacific Comics club. Fans of George Herriman's Kat can hope with collective ferocious zeal that this volume presages infinite follow-ups.

Though the subtitle of this collection, stamped across the cover marquee-style, reads "The Panoramic Dailies of 1920," the strips actually date from 1911 to 1921. Three sections trisect the book: "The Emancipated Kat" includes early strips from subterranean Dingbat-era excursions. These reveal a very different Kat and mouse than later evolutions. "The Liberated Kat" jumps to 1914 when Krazy received the blessing of a solo strip extricated from "The Family Upstairs. Basement no more. I am Kat, hear me roar. These pun-filled often self-referential strips display the development of Herriman's new favorite characters. The final section of strips, "Flights of Fanciful Freedom," dives right into the panoramic strips advertised up front. They represent comic eye candy of the highest order. As luscious as the Sundays, only smaller, they reveal the strip in almost full stride. Surrealism and off-frame references abound. Among the works is the much discussed "Poor poor Injin" strip from May 24, 1920. Once again puns and linguistic peregrinations emanate from the text. Ignatz's ubiquitous brick appears with stunning and symbolic frequency. Offisa Pupp and his jail have not yet become mainstays, as they did in the 1930s and 1940s, but themes point in that direction. The quality never staggers. Krazy Kat's reputation heightens with each flop of the sometimes unwieldy pages (prepare ample space for gazing). And if that wasn't enough, a final section reprints the masterful 1922 program of the Krazy Kat jazz pantomime. Given vast space, Herriman's artwork reveals all its subtle beauty and charm. Prepare to be overwhelmed.

So did "The Kat Who Walked in Beauty" interrupt Fantagraphics's ongoing printing of the Krazy Kat Sunday pages? If so, it was worth it. To have numerous dailies spread out like gorgeous landscapes begging for repeated visits will cull any drooling anticipations for Sundays. Let's hope Fantagraphics plans more volumes of amazing Krazy Kat daily strips.

Krazy Kat-Nearly Full Size

This large format book provides Krazy Kat dailies in nearly newspaper size print. After buying the Fantagraphics sunday series that are available it is interesting to view and read these larger format cartoons. The larger size adds an additional "dimension" that you don't get from the smaller format books. The majority of the book is derived from the series published over 9 months in 1920 with smaller sections from very early days. This is a different Kat than the Krazy Kat of 1920 and later but it helps to show how the cartoon character evolved. Reading this makes me hope Fantagraphics continues to put out more.

This is a great guide book to use when practicing Kundalini Yoga. The book makes it easy to understand the basics of Kundalini yoga. Along with making it easy to practice in your own home. The exercises are made easy to follow by both the written descriptions and well as pictures available for each exercise. I also found it important to understand how each exercise is beneficial which is also nicely explained in this book. You will enjoy the kriyas that support you in strengthening yourself. If you are looking for a guide to help you with your meditation you will find it in this book as well. My only recommendation is listening to yoga music as you practice using this great book at home!! Thank you Sandra for a great book!!!!

What a joy to read such a clear, insightful presentation of Kundalini Yoga. As a practitioner and teacher of Kundalini Yoga, I am always looking for deeper understanding of this ancient art and science. Sandra Halliday's book provided an abundance of new ways of approaching Kundalini Yoga practice.

The physical exercises are explained so clearly that even a beginner with no prior training can learn to do the exercises properly and precisely. The excellent photos are most useful.

Her explanation of the wondrous Kundalini Yoga meditations provides a superb introduction to this important aspect of the practice. She has , again, provided such clear instructions, that the meditations can be done even by beginners.

The entire book is suffused with a quality of love and respect for the reader. One has the sense that Sandra has written the book as an expression of spirituality and service to people.

If you are thinking of making Yoga a part of your life, this is the book to get.

A Hopeful Message

Review Date: 2008-01-31
Ken Gire has written a thoughtful book about the seasons of life and how our lives are part of the natural cycle of life and death. He reminds us that what looks like destruction is actually the beginnings of new creation. This is a hopeful message for the times in our lives when we face tragedy, heartbreaking disappointments, or even the daily uphill grind. In His time, the Master is making us beautiful in His eyes, and bringing light into all the dark corners of our life experiences. This is a very easy read, but also thought-provoking, and Ken Gire uses lovely, lyrical -- almost poetic -- descriptions at times that evoke vivid images. I already loaned my copy out...

I love all of Ken Gire's books. He just makes sense in his explanations about tough times. He knows God's in control and loves us, but also acknowledges the pain and difficulties trials bring. As I've walked through hard times, I've so appreciated each of his books.

Reccomended by a colleague I found it to be one of the most inspiring books I've read in a long time. "Life As We Would Want It..." addresses the desire of most to have smooth sailing through life: it doesn't happen that way. The author provides sound and reasonable counsel to change your approach to life in order to handle all that it throws at you. I am reccomending this book to everyone I encounter.

Life Skills is presented in such a way that one can do a section each day, week, or month. It really provides some tools to help one understand the changes that may be taking place subcounciously. Truly a recommended tool for people of all ages. Too bad they didn't provide this as a senior class in high schools.

I have read lots of different books for establishing direction and purpose for my life. LifeSkills has been the best thus far at providing a thoughtful, insightful approach to addressing the most crucial areas to being a complete person (spiritual, physical, career, etc.). If you like books like Steven Covey's series or the "Parachute" books, then you will profit immensley from this. Be prepared to be honest and reflective with yourself. You can spend hours or days on it by going one chapter at a time. I read it every year just to remember what I'm made of and what I want to become.

Kelly Reising has a knack for conveying quick and interesting beauty tips in a fun and effortless way. Many of the tips in this book are things that make you go, "Oh, yeah. That's a good idea!" I think this is also a great book for women wanting to get back into makeup trends after a hiatus. I won't feel like such a moron now when I go to the makeup counter of a department store and investigate a clear mascara as if it were some futuristic robot or something. I also like how the author suggests using one's own natural beauty and enhancing it with minimal makeup.

I found this book several years ago at the public library. It delivers just what it promises, a useful method for improving circulation, health and thereby skin tone and color. Using this method provides a viable alternative to surgery. It's longer lasting, relaxing, non-invasive and cost-effective. A valuable book for anyone committed to self-responsible self-maintenance.

Because it's out of print, I've borrowed this book again several times since. I've also looked for something simliar to purchase, but nothing comes close. Alas!

I discovered "New Beauty: The Acupressure Facelift" about five months ago and have practiced Lindsay's acupressure methods nearly every day since. I have noticed great results! I love this book and wish it would be re-printed. She provides a wonderful alternative to surgical facelifts--something plastic surgeons certainly wouldn't like! Still, I think all women should be able to learn about the benefits of facial massaging and exercises and decide for themselves if this method is right for them. It IS right for me.

Martha Matilda Harper And The American Dream: How One Woman Changed The Face Of Modern Business is the fascinating, meticulously researched, superbly presented biography of the woman who invented the business franchise. Yet her inventive contribution was lost to American business history until Jane Plitt (business owner, labor arbitrator, social justice advocate, and visiting scholar at the University of Rochester) discovered through original research what a remarkable contribution Martha Matilda Harper had made to the contemporary face of American-style free enterprise. Martha Matilda Harper And The American Dream is enthusiastically recommended reading and an essential addition to Women's Studies and American Business History reading lists and library collections.

A well-written and well-deserved biography about a previously obscure
female entrepreneur and humanitarian who overcame her own impoverished
background and helped other women do the same. Although recognition
of Martha Matilda Harper's accompliishments are overdue, she was a
person ahead of her time-- she introduced the first franchise idea in
America. [Ms. Plitt's] excellent (and very readable) book broadens
the perspective of American history by identifying this dynamic
American business woman.

Thanks, Jane R. Plitt, for bringing Martha
Matilda Harper to our attention.

Pioneer in Skin and Hair Care Industry

This is a great book about one of the first, if not THE first, woman to open a public beauty salon (in the 1890's when people did their hair at home). Harper manufactured and distributed hair and skin care products; she trained women to open their own shops under the Harper name. According to the book her products preceded those of the familiar cosmetic names of today. Her business ethics were to help others, share the wealth, the Golden Rule, deal with others honestly and fairly. This, and hard work paid off! This story would make a great rags-to-riches movie!

I've been using the daily face peel for almost two months and not only does it not clean well, but my face feels tighter and smoother for a while. I think it's made a difference with texture and firmness in the long run. It's really not a peel, but just a very good cleanser. I just started using the serum and can't say if it really firms my face, but I'm happy with MD Skincare products and expect good results from the serum also.
