Not only is this book a great one - full of information, but the author was the "guest expert" on Montel Williams on November 17, 2000. She certainly practices what she preaches - first impressions are made within seven seconds, and hers was a great one.

Even though this book was written for women,I found it extremely helpful. No-nonsense, easy to read, great tips. I purchased another one for my daughter who is in college - she loved it. "Dad, I didn't know the answers to some questions I had about fashion, but I found it in this book. Thanks for sending it to me!" Thanks, Joni, for a great book!

Great information, wonderful tips, everyone needs this book!

I had Prof. Pontynen as an art history teacher at UW Oshkosh, he changed my world perspective. at first he is hard to take, forcing you to come to grips with what you think is real art is really garbage and a waste of time. His views on art and life are so poignant and real, he really makes people wake up and realize they are just floating. his book is a reflection of his teachings, i recommend it to anyone in the art and design field or anyone interested in art or interested in gaining a knowlege on the world around them.

I have this author as an art history teacher and I love the way he teaches. Most teachers teach directly from a book, making students memorize facts, where this teacher makes students think. I haven't finished the entire book yet, but I love what I have read!

A challenging and scholarly view of Western art history through the touchstone of a prerequisite search
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-18
For The Love Of Beauty: Art, History, And The Moral Foundations Of Aesthetic Judgment by Arthur Pontynen (Professor of Art History, University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh) is a challenging and scholarly view of Western art history through the touchstone of a prerequisite search, even a quest for "the good, the true, and the beautiful." Professor Pontynen questions the value of art in a world framed by the assumption of dogmatic aesthetics, instead of validating the search for truth, beauty, and goodness. Professor Pontynen applies this thesis or critical reference to Western art and art history from Classicism to Postmodernism. Further, he grounds his observations with examples from history, philosophy, aesthetics, and specific works of art. There are forty black and white photo reproductions of art works incorporated into the text. For The Love Of Beauty is a seminal, 364-page work of critical thought intended to challenge the reader to explore further those assumptions upon which all notions of beauty, truth, and goodness are based. It is a great scholarly text of particular interest to philosophers, art historians, as well as students and non-specialist general readers with an interest in ethics, aesthetics, and intellectual history.

Everyone wants to look like they did when they were young. I always assumed that the only way to achieve it was some painful medical procedure (visions of the skin on my face being pulled back and stapled behind my ears). Then I read Forget the Knife. You will be amazed at all of the effective non-invasive cosmetic procedures that are available. Dr. Covey hit this topic out of the park. If you're thinking about cometic surgery, read this amazing and well written book first.

What a great book! I've been wanting to get rid of the wrinkles and fine lines on my face but I do not want to have surgery. A friend of mine gave me this book to read and now I have a better understanding of my options and I know the right questions to ask my doctor. And I was able to use some of Dr. Covey's advice about skin care right away! Thank you to my friend and thank you Dr. Covey for writing such an easy to read and well organized book. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for useful information on how to look younger and better.

It is very rare to come across a book that simplifies a complext set of topics without talking down to readers. This one does it with chapters that are easy to follow and content that is complete. Non-invasive cosmetic procedures can provide people with solutions that are highly effective, affordable and do not require surgery. Forget the Knife discusses the full range of options in a very objective way. I highly recommend it.

Many have said,"If I had this life to live over again, I would do things differently." The restitution of the human family by Jesus' ransom sacrifice for mankind, as the second Adam, is fully realized. The characters in this book have this opportunity to use their life experiences, both good and bad, when they are resusitated from the sleep of death; the generation of 1945 during World War II in Japan begin this book's story.
This author's insight into human thoughts, motives, and yearnings make the story so reasonable and plausible. It fills the heart with hopefulness and increases faith in our Creator's love for his special creation, man.

This is the second in a series of books written by John Class, who has studied the Word of God and its principles for many years. This particular book is a continuation of the story in the first book "Alive Again" (which I also highly recommend) and focuses on the resurrection and rehabilitation of individuals in a world where sin dwelleth NO MORE!!! Even Hitler gets a second chance -- under the extreme iron rule of the Lord. Yes, the Gospel which was preached to Abraham is truly good news, a thought lost sight of during the dark ages. All will be brought back to life and all will have a full, fair opportunity to get to know the Lord in a world where no one can hurt another. How glorious!

This is a great book - it accomplishes several things very very well. First, Jude Grimm's directions on how to make the most of your unique beauty will inspire you. Second, her advice on how to find beauty professionals that can work with your natural assets is clear and very helpful. Finally, her commitment to helping people feel beautiful inside and out by way of natural products gives people a sustainable option in a world that needs us to guide ourselves towards healthy, eco-friendly consumer choices. Jude helped me polish and highlight my looks in a way that is genuine, and that is both hip and timeless.

Being very concerned about how products effect my health and the health of our environment, I was so pleased to finally find a salon stylist who understood the value of healthy product and practiced what she preached. At my first appointment, Jude talked about her values, and it was music to my ears. Her book reflects her deep knowledge and values about hair, product, and looking your best. Reading her book is like being in a personal conversation with her. Read what she says and then do what she says. You'll be surprised how much information you'll learn from her book.

I know the phrase, real beauty, is everywhere these days. But this book is "REAL". As a psychotherapist working with women, I know that many want to have a look like celebrities and fashion models. When they purchase books and magazines to enhance their looks they are trying to be like others. They lose their joy in their "uniqueness". It's often a demeaning activity. This book suggests that we should appreciate our own beauty. There are simple, direct and very useful tips to regain our appreciation of our own unique beauty. Further there are suggestions on what to expect of those imporant professionals that help us achieve our look, our stylists! I have purchased this book as gifts for women between the ages of 18 and 60 and all have loved it.

Care to take on a dare? I bet you cannot read Half Full without tearing up. You may not even be able to read it without a box of tissues at your side. Frankly, I had to read one story at a time, and take breaks between the essays so that I could compose myself!

Azriela Jaffe is a shining example of why life for an optimist is always half full. She sees good in the stories of others, and she makes their lights shine by bringing hope and encouragement to the world through this book.

Despite all of the international problems we face today, despite the economic woes of our national economy and despite any other negativity in our world - Half Full is a chance to sit back and relax with others who see life from a positive perspective, and who have personally taken on their own challenges to find individual success beyond belief.

I never tire of hearing about the inner strength that people have. I am never bored by hearing the life-stories of what others have to endure to find themselves. I love hearing about the struggles and seeing visions of the success smiles through the eyes of the writers.

My own essay was blessedly chosen by Azriela for inclusion in Half Full. I cannot say that my story of optimism and love compares to the stories of others, but it does fulfill the important lesson that Ms. Jaffe wanted to convey when she started writing this book - it is a story of hope and of triumph.

I highly recommend Half Full. If you took my dare, you probably lost. But, that's ok - look on the bright side - you had a great read!

The stories in this book help you realize how lucky you really are! Everyone has had their share of life-changing events, and you may even find a story within that is similar to yours in some way. The difference is the power of positive thinking. The 40 stories in Half Full show how you can make the best of what you are going through just as these authors did. My family is going through hard times (yet again), and Half Full has helped me feel far more optimistic about it all. It can surely give you a boost as well, whatever your situation. I plan to get several more as gifts.

When you can't get out to the mall and actually SHOP for shoes, you can get that same shoe-shopping FIX from Jane Eldershaw's book. It's every bit as cute as those red, kitten-heel, t-straps that you've been dreaming about. (If you don't know what that means, this book is NOT for you!)

Memories and Cinderella Shoe Moments

After returning from a recent trip to LA, my husband commented on women's obsession with style and I had just purchased a pair of shoes that made me look much taller and thinner. Shoes can make you lose weight, I love it.

Anyway, it was time to read this adorable book about shoes. I don't have as many shoes as I did in college although I tend to remember my life in some autobiographical way through the shoes I was wearing at the time. I remember the boots I wore in Paris and the sexy shoes with sparkly diamonds I wore for a special occasion.

Jane Eldershaw seems to see life in a similar fashion. Heart and Sole is a lighthearted memoir that explores Jane's life through her shoe selections. She gives tips on how to judge a man by his choice of shoes and why there are only two types of women in the world.

Jane Eldershaw is a writer and magazine illustrator who was born in Australia. Her writing style is original, playful and has a love for descriptive words to tease your mind. She has worked for New Woman and Vogue Australia. The book jacket hides a beautiful high-quality ruby covered and exquisitely bound book. Women who love well-made shoes will appreciate the style and quality of this tiny book. The book was also illustrated by Jane and I was especially amused by "toe decolletage." She has drawn pictures of her shoes, everything from her boots to her Italian Interlude when she wore shoes from Rome. She explores life choices after she wore her new cherry-red-spike-heeled ankle-straps with silver buckles.

Jane also reveals interesting facts about Marilyn Monroe, Barbie dolls and how to find a shoe-inn for storage. Where do your shoes live? What is the heel called. I had no idea there was a "kitten" heel, but it is very common.

I could easily become obsessed with shoes again and have been in the past, but lately I'm all about comfort and the shoes that are fancy are sure to only be worn for special occasions. This book reminded me of how fun it is to shop for shoes and I'm of course always on the look for pretty slippers for wearing while writing reviews. I did try on clear plastic shoe the other day and had to feel a bit sorry for Cinderella. Glass could not be overly comfortable although a girl can dream. I've stepped on broken glass and ruined a heel while almost tripping down steps, so that might be a sign.

This delicious book made me fondly remember the Nordstrom of the past where men dressed in suits played Prince Charming and slipped slippers of all colors onto your feet. Where have those days gone? Jane explores the elements of a good shoe salesman and it is nothing like Married with Children. ;) It is a bit more like Sex and the City. My husband might want to read this book because he is a shoe guy. He has been known to give me advice on shoe selections. He hasn't seen what I bought for our anniversary. Hee, hee...

Other unique features:

Tips on How to Care for Shoes
Discarding Your Past Personalities
What a cobbler Can and Can't do!
Feel-Good Fix-Ups for Fatigued Feet

If you read one book on shoes in this lifetime this should be the book. Perfect for keeping in your matching purse for reading just about anywhere.
