I ordered the book because I liked the review here and those pages I could brouse. I received this book yesterday and was absolutely charmed with everything about it: from its simple but elegant design to tons of easy-to-follow, wonderfully useful reccomedations. One of the best features -- its new system of skin types, much more reasonable and helpful than usual dry-normal-oily system.

I'm rather picky when it comes to all natural beauty guides--often disappointed by the simple "recipes" I could probably figure out by myself (ie: add five drops of essential oil to unscented lotion). The beauty recipes in this book are limited, but more complex and actually worth trying/using. Good information on essential oils and blending, as well as a few tasty [food]recipes. This is a wonderful natural spa book. I especially love how the author doesn't use [the book] as a tool to push Naturopathica products =)

I received this as a gift for my birthday and the title is a bit of a misnomer as I think it is more a beautiful little book of quotes on living and experience and the love of life. This compliation lead me to Ms. Crowe's other complilations all of which are great gifts and nice to have around for a new viewpoint from time to time.

Witty quips and bold statements blend with 'retro' and cranky observations to create a fun women's nostalgia item perfect for gift-giving. Color images from the 50s supplement a chatty, charming set of one-liners which are pointed as they are hilarious. "Raging Beauties: Confessions & Advice" is the perfect gift choice for that independent, cranky woman who 'has everything' - and has been there/done it all.

As an avid fan of "Remember Rain and Songs of Wonder for the Night Sea Journey," I was delighted to discover that a sequel has been created! Such a comforting and sensitive treatment of death and loss for children is rare. The Websters have done it again, this time using poetry to ease the transition into a new and at times frightening situation - but providing a way of viewing loss as not truly permanent. There is a connection or communion which continues to exist between those who have gone and those who remain. It doesn't have to mean the end of the relationship. There is a way in which our loved ones remain always with us.

The authors, a mother-daughter team who jointly possess the talent to enthrall their readers with a marvellous story that is masterfully illustrated by the well-known George M. Ulrich, have succeeded once again in elevating the spirits of those who are searching for a temporary elixir in this increasingly complex world. (They have collaborated with Mr. Ulrich on other great books!) This is a story that should be read to children by their parents right before bedtime and even savored by adults who merely desire to retrace the time when they themselves were very young. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

In a time when the daily news is dominated by negativity and hostilities, this book gives my students and me hope and inspiration and reminds us that meaningful friendships will help us endure. The authors take me and my students to a place of calm and beauty and have encouraged my students' interests in each other's creative efforts. I have never seen such a thougthful and sensitive way of sharing with young ones how loss can be experienced in a way that transcends all hardship.Zen Shorts (Caldecott Honor Book)], [[ASIN:0805071954 The Fall of Freddie the Leaf: 20th Aniversary Edition], [[ASIN:1591470722 Gentle Willow: A Story for Children About Dying,The Gift of a Memory: A Keepsake to Commemorate the Loss of a Loved One],[[ASIN:0688115187 Badger's Parting Gifts.

Remember Beauty and Songs For a Blue Time is a gentle, picturebook poem offering a comforting allegory for being separated from loved ones by great distance or death. Strikingly illustrated in an unforgettable, solid-color style, Remember Beauty and Songs For a Blue Time recounts the fast bond between the lupine Great Lone Wolf and a tiny kitten called Buddha Baby. The two steadfast friends would always sing together; but then the time came when Great Lone Wolf had to leave Buddha Baby on a faraway journey. "And the Great Lone Wolf / Sings a song of wonder / That shines like / A giant red harvest moon / Rising in the East / Through the tree tops / Along the banks of the river // remember our love / travels a great distance / than the whole wide universe // plant the love / within yourself / and you will see // at night you will still behold / the star-scattered sky / and that sky will carry / my love to you." Also highly recommended is the previous picturebook of Great Lone Wolf and Buddha Baby, "Remember Rain and Songs of Wonder for the Night Sea Journey."

Terri Mcfaddin has written a true gem!
I devoured this book with an intensity that surprised even me.
I found a little of myself in almost all the jewels but most closely identified with the sapphire woman. In this chapter Terri writes that she wishes she could buy a sapphire ring for every Black woman as a reminder to her that "God hears". Well thank you Terri for allowing the Lord to use you in such an inspiring way. After reading the book I celebrated myself by buying my first precious jewel; a pair of sapphire earrings!!!! When I look in the mirror at myself and my sparkling earrings, repeating the prayer from the back of the book, I can't help but throw my head back and high-five the Holy One as a thank you for hearing my every cry.

I am an avid reader, and by far this is the best book I have read in a long time!! First let me say that Ms. Mcfaddin is a fantastic writer who captures the reader with her ability to relate the beauty, character, strength, and complexities of black women to the magnificence of jewels. Ms. Mcfaddin carefully constructs the text with the biblical knowledge and history that I am sure came from years of research and study. Each chapter is based on the jewels in the breastplate of Aaron. The excavation, preservation and cultivation of each jewel is explained and related to the characteristics of the black woman. Ms. Mcfaddin also ends each chapter with a story that demonstrates the corellation of each presciuos jewel with biblical text, and ultimately with God's plan for the character in the story. This book is to be treasured like a jewel!! You will not be disappointed!!

As a black woman, have you ever doubted your self-worth? Are you your own worst critic? If so, SAPPHIRES AND OTHER PRECIOUS JEWELS is the book for you.
As Terri McFaddin so eloquently describes, we are all a beautiful, precious jewel. She likens the characteristics of black women to the following twelve jewels:
Ruby - a woman of virtue and praise
Topaz - a woman of vision and reward
Aquamarine - a woman who dwells in peace
Turquoise - a woman of mercy and grace
Sapphire - a woman of prayer and faith
Diamond - a woman of strength and prosperity
Opal - a woman of dreams and fruitfulness
Amethyst - a woman who is trustworthy and sober minded
Emerald - a woman of rest and good judgment
Onyx - a woman of happiness and abundance
Pearl - a woman of wisdom and kindness
These are the same jewels that God chose to cover the breastplate of Aaron, the high priest, and brother of Moses. I found that I identify with the amethyst, which also happens to be my birthstone.
From the beautiful front cover to the very last page, SAPPHIRES AND OTHER PRECIOUS JEWELS is full of biblical stories, encouraging words, real-life experiences, and stories created to help guide each of us on our path of self-discovery. This is a book every Black woman should read.

Women of all ages should have a copy of this book! The humor that Michelle Medlock Adams uses throughout this book is brilliant! In today's society there is so much pressure on women to look a certain way. The author really helps put into perspective the fact that true beauty is internal and comes from God...not the outside world. Buy this for the women in your life!

This 60-day devotional really challenged me to reevaluate the way I view beauty. The writer uses humor throughout the book, which I really liked. Also, I like the way she tied in contemporary, practical information with biblical truths about true beauty. I finished this book feeling renewed and refreshed, knowing that true beauty only comes through the Lord. And, I also came away with some great practical tips that I am putting to use! Highly recommended.

We, as women, seem to be under a lot of pressure to be perfect. (or at least look perfect) But this book is an excellent reality check of what true beauty really is, and what it isn't. It isn't about whether I'm a size 2, but it IS about the condition of my heart and having a healthy perception of my self-worth.

In this story the kind and the queen have a baby. So they decided to throw a party, everyone was invited, but the wicked fairy. The three good fairies waved their wands over the baby granting her very special gifts. The first was beauty, then kindness, then the wicked fairy came and said when she is sixteen, she will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and she will die. Then the last good fairy said she will not die, but she will sleep until a prince comes and breaks the spell, so they burned all of the spinning wheels they found except for one. Eventually when she turned sixteen she found some stairs and walked up them, found the only last spinning wheel that there was and reached out to touch it, and pricked her finger. Then she went to sleep on a little bed. The three little good fairies put a sleeping spell on the castle. Only the prince could break the spell, the wicked fairy made a great forest of roses around the castle. The castle slept for 100 years. The prince found the castle one day and cut through the rose forest with his magic sword. After the wicked fairy turned into a dragon he fought her and won. He went into the castle and found sleeping beauty sleeping...
I think this is a good book for kids to read, it teaches you to always invite everyone so you dont make them feel bad, and to never say something bad will happen to someone cause it might.

First I must say that it would be hard for me to let go of this book as it is one of the most beautifully illustrated and retold Sleeping Beauty books I have had read.
The authors use of Celtic mythology and in my opinion is based on Avalon & The Lady of the Lake, Vivianne. Read it and tell me what you think?
Looking closly at the illustrations the Blue Faery wears the crown of the cresent moon Symbolizing a Priestess of the Goddess.
A must read!!!!!! Not short of Beautiful!

This is a beautiful rendition of the classic tale. The author has creatively added more background to the characters. This gives each more depth and makes their interactions more complex. One inventive twist of the tale is that the prince is the son of the fairy who cast the curse. This sets up an intriguing juxtaposition between the two families and the fact that the princess is mortal while the prince is immortal. The author adds new themes to the story such as the sacrifices of love, the freedom forgiveness brings, and most importantly the eternal quality of love. The illustrations in this book are very dramatic and have an ethereal quality. The total work is captivating and memorable.
A fairy tale made believable!

It seems like every illustrator in the world has done a version of some fairy tales, especially "Sleeping Beauty." It offers great pictures, after all. But Mercer Mayer did something different... he added zest to the tale! He sets it in Celtic Britain, with lots of Celtic motifs added to the illustration. He also starts before the King got married, so we get a brief idea of who the King and Queen are who want a child so badly, and why the wicked fairy was not invited to the christening (and sort-of why it offended her). The Blue Faerie and the Star Faerie are your leading players in here -- once again, Sleeping Beauty herself is fairly passive (only in Robin McKinley's "Spindle's End" is she the active heroine) -- but the tale doesn't suffer. We even learn more about the prince, his relationship to the fairies and Sleeping Beauty, and why he had to love her "more than life" to wake her up. This book, along with beautiful illustrations (even if he does sometimes go overboard with the hair), is chock full of ideas, seeds... images and suggestions that say, "This should have been a novel." At any rate, you will appreciate the explanation behind the characters as well as the beautiful art.

"Sleeping Beauty" is a charming novel by Judy Baer about a young woman, Suze Charles, who has had issues with sleepwalking her entire life. Her college escapades are legendary! Her mother is in denial that Suze still sleepwalks now that she's grown up. Her sister is adopting a baby from South America, and must leave her "vivacious" 4 year-old twin sons with Suze for a couple of months! Suze is considering turning down a great job that will require much travel because of her "problem". And now she's met a handsome doctor who just happens to specialize in sleep disorders! What a tangled web Suze's life is. This novel is never dull - that's for sure!
Judy Baer creates realistic characters, witty dialog and laugh-out-loud funny situations. And in the midst of all of this creativity and color, she manages to sprinkle deep, meaningful lessons that minister to the reader's heart. I was particularly touched by the "never give up" message incorporated in this book, as well as the illustration about how, when we are bruised, beaten and battered, we tend to cling to our tattered lives because they are familiar rather than looking around to see how God had brought us to a beautiful and bountiful place. Bravo, Judy! Your book entertained and touched me.

Suze Charles is up for a longed-for promotion in her company--the only drawback is that she has to go to Chicago to interview, and the job requires lots of travel. This is a major problem for a chronic sleepwalker who manages to get into legendary nocturnal rambles.
During the trip to Chicago, Suze meets an impossibly gorgeous man--unfortunately, while she is sleepwalking. David Grant seems fascinated by her, but when Suze learns he's a doctor, specializing in sleep disorders, Suze wonders if his interest is in her as a person or as a case study.
When Suze needs to babysit her Terror Twins nephews while their parents go on an extended trip to South America to get a new baby sister, Suze is overwhelmed and even tries to stay awake all night so she doesn't accidentally sleepwalk when the twins are there. But that leaves her less than alert during the day, and the boys get into all kinds of mischief. Dr. David even seems to like her nephews. If only Suze could be sure of his attentions...
Sleeping Beauty is a fun chick lit with a heroine with an unusual problem: Sleepwalking! I laughed out loud at several places in this book, and had to keep reading to find out what Suze (or her nephews) would get into next. David is the perfect hero for this book, a sleep disorder doctor. He's also compassionate and friendly, the ideal doctor.
I totally loved Sleeping Beauty. It's a light, fun book perfect to read after a stressful day, or to unwind after a daily routine. It held my interest from beginning to end - and I'm looking forward to reading Judy's next book. Bravo! Discussion questions are included at the end.
Armchair Interviews says: Judy does it again-she has cornered the inspirational chick lit market.

Suze Charles has been a sleepwalker all her life. Her family and friends can tell hilarious stories about her escapades. Suze has a hard time joining in the fun because she doesn't remember doing anything, and she's tired of being embarassed. Now she has an opportunity for a great job, but she's afraid of leaving home for a new location. When she leaves town for the interview, she booby traps her hotel at night, so she can't get out of the room without waking up. She wakes up all right, down in the lobby in her nightclothes, facing David Grant, a sleep disorder specialist. David is sure he can help Suze, but she's been that road too many times. However getting rid of Dr. Grant proves to be almost impossible. He even likes her twin nephews, Timmy and Terry, who give new meaning to the words "holy terrors." Thirty minutes with those two is encough to make even the most dedicated suitor think twice about getting married.
Judy Baer tells a terrific story. Her characters are funny, warm, and compelling. Sleeping Beauty has enough romance, emotion, conflict and humor to keep the reader turning those pages.

Sleeping Beauty was, of course a good movie for those Disney fans who love the great artist's works. The three good fairies, Flora, Fauna and Merryweather offered a single gift to the newborn princess. But the evil Maleficent crashed the party and cursed Aurora by pricking her finger to the venomous spindle of a spinning wheel and die at her 16th birthday. As a Disney fan, I'm considering that this beautiful young princess will be saved at last by the third of the fairy trio, Merryweather, who had given to her this almost tiny gift: When Aurora pricks her finger into evil witch Maleficent's spinning wheel, she cannot die. Instead of death, the princess will sleeping into a deep slumber until a charming prince wake her with the true love's kiss. So Maleficent turns herself into an evil black fire-breathing dragon to stop Prince Phillip to rescue sleeping Aurora. But the good fairies combine their magic to the mighty Sword of Truth, chanting "Now, Sword of Truth, fly swift and sure. That evil die and good endure!", and the prince throw his magic sword straight as an arrow into the dragon's heart. I'm sure that's a nice movie and I strongly recommend it to all the children beginning from 5 to 12 years old.

This book is a real treasure. Based on Walt Disney's widescreen animated fairytale epic "Sleeping Beauty," this is a nostalgic exact reprint of the storybook created for the film in 1959. It is illustrated with original artwork created especially for storybooks. It is a shame that more people have not discovered this wonderful book. It's one of those books that you can read to your children at bedtime and they can be captivated by the illustrations. It is one of those books that you keep in your bookcase after the children have gown up and you can pull it out from time to time and just reminisce.

This is a beautiful book. It is reminiscent of the images and style of children's books published at the time when Disney originally released SLEEPING BEAUTY. This is a real tribute and a cherished edition to have from one of Disney's best and often overlooked fairy tale classics. It has a real place in my heart.

This is a beautiful book. With Amazon not carrying a picture of it, I was a little afraid to order it, fearing what I might get. I am so pleased with it. The illustrations are very stylized, very 1950's era. The colors are brilliant, even to the endpaper. I love the angles of the characters' faces and shoulders. To get a general idea what the book looks like, check out "Walt Disney's Classic Storybook" and imagine a ten times more beautiful version. Enjoy!
