Bird clips are from Victorian sources. Some kitsch - birds dressed like people - others quite good. Like the other Dover CD-ROMS, you can pull the images off the disk without installing them on your HD.

Excellent UPnP tutorial

I found this book to be a great introduction to the UPnP technology. The authors start with some reasonable assumptions about the skills of the reader, then methodically build a foundation for understanding and implementing the UPnP technology. Highly recommended.

Very good UPnP overview

This book gives very good overall overview of UPnP for somebody that is new to this matter. It is done from the Intel tools perspective, which is not surprising given writers affiliation. But, all in all, they try to give an objective picture.
I would like to see more concrete comparisons with Jini though. None of the other, non-UPnP compatible, service discovery methods explicitly mentioned in the book but advantages and shortcomings of UPnP (and there are quite a few) could be understood only in conjunction with other developments. There are currently some domains, for example, where UPnP will simply not work. For somebody, that is interested what other similar technologies are available I can recommend the book "Jini technology: An Overview" by S. Ilango Kumaran because this book gives a broader view of the state of technolgy today (not just Jini).

When I decided that I wanted to learn a new computer language, I decided that HTML was the one I wanted to learn. When I started doing a research about the HTML books, I bumped with this book, and even though it's cover design wasn't all that professional, I love it, so I bought it. When I started reading and applying the content, I was so excited because it was so easy and effective. After having the book with me for about one month, I was already making programs with JavaScript and VBScript. This book allowed me to do things so fast that I was stunned of what I could do in so little time. This book is the must have book for those beginners who want to learn to program in HTML. But then again, it's a Deitel Deitel book, what else can you expect of Deitel Deitel but the best programming books.
Note: Once you buy this book, you WILL want the other editions. BELIEVE ME!

The university that I attend to highly recommends this book and it's been used for the past 5 years. This book has helped many students and myself achieve high grades. It's easy explainable plus a great introduction to ASP and XML which is so demanding in the job market today. I urge everyone to check this book out!!

Best Deitel book I've read...

Review Date: 2001-09-03
I've read the Deitel Java, VB and C++ books prior to this. All of these books were marred by poor color choices (text and background), errors in the code and the fact that you needed a teacher to explain the book to you. This is not the case with this book. It's seems the Old guy and the Young guy have learned a thing or two about what students require in a learning guide. This book is for Internet Explorer ONLY. No examples of cross browser code is here. This book alone will NOT make you a web developer but what it will do is start you down that path. I do have some complaints though. This book, like the others, is designed for the classroom. That being said you will get the most from it in a classroom setting with a competant teacher. My recommendation to the Guys is to have a public book available that has the answers to the questions in an appendix along with the complete chapter ending projects on a CD. Keep a separate edition for the classroom use.

In the Data Mining field, this book is the most clear and concise and well-organized book for many years. This book truly deserves to be called the Data Mining Cookbook because it appeals to everyone interested in the subject. In other words, her writing style appeals to both the non-statistician and the statistician. The theory is well explained for the general public. She gives the kind of details that allows anyone with a college education and who is determined to be able to do some of this analysis on their own or at least supervise someone who is doing it for them.

Good, easy-to-read book, but lacks some best practice features

Review Date: 2007-11-05
Good book for learning about the data mining techniques of logistic and linear regression. It helped highlight some good uses, and fortunately, I've recently had the opportunity to use it in my work.
However, I was a bit disappointed that the data preparation seemed very coding intensive. The author could have shown readers how to merge lookup tables of risk values onto customer datasets, rather than hard-coding each of the rules and values; or to use the SAS procedure for creating indicator variables, instead of writing the rules for each category.
Overall, I'm glad that I purchased the book - it lives up to its claims - but it misses some of the better practices, and time saving devices, in data preparation

Practical and Powerful

This book is really a useful step by step guidance to build a model using logistic regression. It is very practical and to the point. This book covers the business envrionment from high level and go down to the working data level and then again relate how the results from mining the data can solve busines problem. It is a treasure for data mining analyst and modelers.
Just as the author point out, although there are many new model building techniques emerge every year, logistic regression still remains a very powerful data mining and model building tool. And it is well demonstrated in her detailed examples.

Predictive Modeling Methodology For The Non-Statistical!

Review Date: 2004-03-24
Logistic Regression From A - Z! This book has it all.

The author lays out clear, concise methodologies to build robust predictive models using SAS. The nice thing is this book lays out the process step by step with SAS code examples. You do not have to be a statistics major to understand how to use the built in SAS functionality.

The modeling methods are unbelievably detailed including topics like defining the objective function, testing variables for predictability using chi squared, fitting continuous variables using the most linear variable transformation format (squared, cubed, cubed root, log, exponent, tangent, sine, cosine, etc... 19 total formats), changing categorical variables to continuous indicator variables for logistic regression use, using stepwise, backward, and score regression methods to further eliminate less predictive variables, defining deciles, and model testing methods like bootstrapping, jackknifing and gains tables to validate the model.

I do not fully understand the mathematical concepts involved throughout the entire process nor do I want to. The book provides a consistent repeatable programming methodology to follow that is broken down into very quantifiable steps.

I would recommend this book for anyone with limited statistical knowledge and a need to understand predictive modeling programming methodologies. Knowledge of the SAS programming language is essential to make full use of this material. The book uses real life examples from the banking, insurance, and marketing industries and contains additional valuable information related to these fields.

Its a great book, everything in it is described in detail, and is very easy to follow, there is no way of making the interface wrong. I already have the first edition and the second one is even better.

There is one very important info the author forgot to mention in this second edition, and I think that the people that will buy this book should know. The place to buy assembled and tested board mention in the book, called "Automation in Action" is a Rip off. They will just take your money and you will not receive a single component, they took 939.00 $ from me, without even answering emails or phone calls. Please make sure that you buy the parts from other sources, I will hate to see more people losing their money this way.

I think Bruce Chubb did an excellent job writing this book. His examples are clear and concise. He really does a good job bringing the techno babble of today to a level that a typical person off the street can understand. The book uses a great example by applying an interface to a model railroad. It's a must read for anyone internested in building a computer interface to control anything from house alarms to running a model railroad.

Good technical info, but too costly

The technical info provided was good, but no code was provide for the MC68701, so your forced to buy the chip pre-programmed for $65.00, just for the chip. Then of course you can buy prebuilt boards at $200, $100, $85, $50 WOW!, > $400 bucks I can buy data acq boards for less than this!!

Without the code for the MC68701 your stuck!

Excellent Electrical explainations, pricey to build
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1998-09-25
From an electrical explaination viewpoint this is a spectacular book. It does a great job of the why it does what it does, and how it does it. It expalins how the data-bus is 'extended outside' the CPU onto his interface, and how the decoding and latching works. My major complaint is the cost that it takes to build it. PC Board scematics are provided at reduced size, they provide addresses for bare boards, and built boards. I can't etch boards, so buying bare ones is needed for me. As the author points out, after parts are added, you are looking at 300.00- 400.00 (U.S. Dollars) to build yourself, almost double that if you want to buy built/tested boards. The basic bare boards run about 100.00 for the 3 boards that build the minimum 'system' (which provides 16 outputs) I believe another 36.00 for an input board (16 ports). then start multiplying the input/outport boards(32?/36? each) for multiples of input and/or output as your 'design' needs. (upto 1536 each is supported). I'm a basic hobbiest, I can build on a bread-board etc. I'm not looking to run a business operation (which this thing CAN do). I was looking to 'play around' with an extra 286/386 I have around. But at these prices, I don't think I'll actually build his design (but I will use some of his circuit ideas in my own bread-boards).

The designs are very good and can be used for lots of different crafts. The black line masters could be enlarged or reduced in size to suit many projects e.g, glass painting, embroidery, applique, machine embroidery, cross stitch, stencil printing and more. They can be a starting point for individualising the design to your own needs by adding the flower designs together to make interesting and creative work.

Review Date: 2008-01-21
I would say that this book, along with the authors' Rocket Men and David Harland's Mir are the three most important books on the Soviet Space program and it's equipment. For almost 40 years the Soyuz has been the workhorse of the Soviet/Russian space program, this book chronicles the first 36 years. Both the human side and hardware are covered.

Very Informative, But What a Rough Read!
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-14
This book adds a lot of insight into how the Soviet and now Russian Space programs developed and refined Soyuz. It will leave you with a solid knowledge of what a workhorse it is - not as sexy as the Shuttle - more like a crew cab pickup truck that just gets better and better with every version release. The majority of the book has great relevant technical detail with some good yarn spinning to add flavor. The functional relationship between Soyuz and Salyut, MIR and ISS is nicely detailed in this book.

With that said, it's a shame the authors released it with out more editing. There is one section that clearly was published in draft form with the notations left in for further clarification or to add more information at a later date. It is actually kind of amusing that the authors where using a shorthand at one point that was meant to be searched and replaced - and they didn't - thus they share there cute nickname for the Russians.

The authors should be applauded for the hard work they put into researching and assembling this book. The publisher should be spanked for not finding them a couple of hungry graduate engineering assistants to help turn this into something more readable

This book provides an overview of the Soyuz hardware and Soyuz flights up through the Soyuz TMA, with in-depth coverage of many early flights. It also includes a substantial chapter on the Progress. There are numerous black and white illustrations and photographs.

Note that book does not focus on operations on-board the Salyut, Almaz, Mir or ISS stations, only on getting there/back and docking.

Long-awaited reference book on Soviet Russian Spaceflight
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-19
The Soviet/Russian space program has already operated 4 space stations ( Salyut-series, Mir, ISS ). This book by BIS president Rex D. Hall focuzes on the story of the Soyuz spacecraft which has been used to bring both visitors and resident crews to the Space Stations. An integral element of Salyut , Mir and Internatioanl Space Station ISS operations, the small ferry has been the mainstay of cosmonaut transportation since 1967. In addition, since 1978 the unmanned freighter version called Progress has provided a means in which to regularly re-supply a space station and so prolong its orbital lifetime.
Using authentic Soviet and Russian sources this book is the first known work in the west dedicated to revealing the full story of the Soyuz series. The book describes Mission Hardware and Support Docking Missions from 1966 - 70 , the 1971-81 Soyuz Manned Ferry, the 1978 onwards Progress Cargo-Resupply Ferry , the 1979 - 86 Soyuz T manned ferry, the updated Soyuz TM, 1986 - 2002 to Mir and the very latest Soyuz TMA which has become the vehicle to bring crews to ISS since the accident of shuttle Columbia.
An excellent reference work (it includes a complete listing of vehicle production numbers ), the only minus I see is that this book is not available in Hardcover ...

The Person Behind Universal Web Design
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-26
Regarding accessibility, thinking in terms of versatility is a key. Pragmatic versatility is sort of an ergonomic approach for the mind and eye. I often find that once I have found a web site I must examine it carefully to attempt successful navigation and obtain the information that I seek. More than frequently this is accomplished via intuition. Many sites remind me of those puzzles you would find in the back of old comic books where you have to find the hidden picture within a picture. Someone told me that if I took my stubs from Yankee Stadium and entered their official web site, I have the ability to enter the seat number and a photograph of the field would pop up taken from the angle and perspective of the seat. It is not a high priority in my life, but after two months I still can not find this feature on the site. I am a persistent fellow and I do not intend to be outdone by a machine. Yet as I ponder that standpoint, machines are an extension of our own inventiveness and manifest the results of our own creative abilities. It is an interesting concept that if I purchase this book that purports that it will broaden my awareness and skew my perspective of universal web design by taking into account accessibility considerations I will simultaneously be admitting a lack of my own awareness and a lack of self creativity. I admit that by sporadically entering the New York Yankees' web site over the past two months just to locate a place where I can enter my seat number does appear to be rather a waste of time better well spent on more loftier things. However, this seemingly mundane exercise and defilement of one's purpose in life did accomplish two things. Firstly, its stands as a testament that the New York Yankees' web site is in dire need of analysis and overhaul. Secondly, I found out where to get their daily box scores. Honestly however, this book is good for those who are slowly beginning to acquaint themselves with the potential of good web page design. Captivating the user and directing them in such a way to utilize the full potential of the site by having addressed all factors and judiciously incorporating them into the site is prudent and necessary. Still, I regard a good portion of what this book offers to be common sense.

I found this book very helpful in raising my awareness of accessibility issues. Someone who has been online for years may not find the information new, but anyone who is fairly new to designing web pages will be glad that they read this book. Creating accessible web pages is becoming a necessity, not an afterthought, as disabled persons' organizations are moving toward approaching the issue from a legal standpoint.

Would be a good college textbook, say for Web Design 101.

Review Date: 1998-12-03
The author does a good job of outlining several "problems" that should be considered when designing a web site. It assumes a basic understanding of HTML, but that is it. If you are preparing to create your first complete web site, this book will be very helpful. If you are a more accomplished web designer, this book will be a good reminder, at best, of what to do (and not do). The book offers a thorough list of items that are basic to all web sites -- hence the title "Universal Web Design." Among the items covered are making sure all the links work, testing the site on a variety of platforms and browsers, minimizing file sizes for graphics and other goodies, and keeping your audience in mind. The author lists numerous ways (and web sites) for you to use in checking your site. The CD is full of utilities, but I couldn't get mine to work correctly on Windows 95. There are also plenty of visual samples of what works and what doesn't work in designing your web site, which are very nice. However, the vast majority are black and white, which causes some problems when the author refers to the colors in the example. Several times throughout the book she reminds the reader to keep websurfers with visual disabilities in mind as they create pages. At times these constant reminders became annoying.

If you have Broadway (or B'way Engraved), Futura Black (or Braggadocio) on your machine that should suffice. My Broadway has better kerning than these Dover ones also: test was "VA" overlap. All in all we've seen better. Still looking forward to the next book though!

Here is a great book that takes into account how our needs and use of the kitchen and bathroom change through life. It goes beyond the idea of providing access for the handicapped and shows how these rooms need to take into account how big or tall or short we are and considers how our ability to do things changes with age. This book is a good resource for builders, architects or people building a house.

Universal Design DOES NOT EQUAL wheelchair accessibility and this book makes that very clear. Universal Design (hereafter UD)means taking into account the best way to design for everyone, not just the small percentage of average height, "able-bodied", 20-50 year old "perfect" people in the world. This book also points out that fewer people want to move in with their kids or into a "home" when they get older. So why build houses that will prevent this from happening?

UD is about making things useable for people of almost all physical conditions; sight-impared, mobility-impared, mentally-impared, size-impared (short or tall), and even "average, healthy" people.

This book makes it abundantly clear that UD is not difficult to do on new construction. UD does not have to add hundreds of square feet to your plan.

The book does not, however, have a lot of photos or ideas on how to make UD attractive. The small number of photos in this book are small, black and white, and poor quality. They do make their point, even though they are not pretty to look at.

The book is FULL (almost cover to cover) of diagrams and line drawings which show the possibilities AND detailed requirements of universal design. Many of the details are wheelchair-oriented, but this is because wheelchair access is often the lowest common denominator.

If you need to be concerned about UD or if you feel that it is a smart thing to do (I firmly believe it is a smart thing to do), then buy this book. There are no pretty, inspiring photos to show you how to do it beautifully, but there are tons of details to make sure you don't do it wrong. EVERY ARCHITECT AND BUILDER OUGHT TO HAVE A COPY OF THIS BOOK.

(P.S. Just think of the "fun" you would have in your current house if you had to use a walker, wheelchair, or only one hand. What about even a broken leg? You WILL more than likely get old sometime. You could even be injured and become disabled (even if only temporarily). Do you want your house to be a barrier in that event? UD really should be something everyone thinks about, seriously!)
