Building a Discourse
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-28
The intent of this volume was to construct a coherent history of the idea of regionalism from its many many supporting texts and ideas. It is an important collection of writing that covers the entire 20th Century intellectual history of Regionalism in Architecture and includes such authors as: Lewis Mumford, Le Corbusier, David Williams, Mary Colter, Pietro Belluschi, Christopher Alexander, Wendell Berry, Kenneth Frampton, Sigfried Giedion, Harwell Hamilton Harris, Richard Ingersoll, Benton MacKaye, John Gaw Meem, Richard Neutra, Paul Ricouer, Alan Colquhoun, Juhani Pallasmaa, among others (44 in all). Further, it considers Regionalism in an international context, particularly the developing world through the writings of Suha Ozkan (Middle East), Balkrishna Doshi (India), and Kenza Boussora (Algeria). In it are provided contextual introductions to each text and an introduction that attempts to place the discourse, as a whole in reasonable framework. The topics include: Regionalist theory, Referential Regionalism (1920s & 30s), Regional Modernism (1930s-1960s), Regional Planning, Bioregionalism, Critical Regionalism, and a set of essays that update and extend the discourse into the future via performativity theory, sustainability, and the socially-critical work of the Rural Studio.

I feel the product that I bought from you all is awesome. By me working for the WCCA, seeing it come into fuition from the ground up and helping to bring the vision to light, has been an awesome experience. It is such a large, beautiful building. The decor is just wonderful. The product, the book of all the different pictures of the WCCA is just awesome, everyone who is from DC should have one. Especially those of us who work for the WCCA. Thanks Ms. Dietsch for creating such an awesome tribute to the WCCA.

Well Done
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-17
This book consists of a series of papers investigating attitudes towards residential housing and customs of England, Holland, and France. Most papers consider questions about modern housing, but some take a historical viewpoint, looking back to the 19 th century or even earlier. A few have been published elsewhere in other languages or in a different form. For the most part, the topics are highly specialized rather than general, considering, for instance, evidence on domestic conditions drawn from paintings by the Dutch masters, the history of Dutch window shapes, usage, and décor, use of hallways in France, external decorations of privatized council housing, and the history of laundering in Western Europe. The editor, Cieraad, draws these disparate topics together in her masterful introduction. The book includes a unified bibliography and index.

An attractive, insightful look at my favorite city.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

This is a superb look at Paris. First catching the eye are the gorgeous watercolor sketches of the city and its people. Then the text grabs one's attention... a carefully considered, affectionate and very personal description of a Paris thet is not only a repository of culture but also a vibrant, ever-changing city. A delightful book in every respect! I couldn't give it enough stars.

"Etta Place: Her Life and Times With Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" by Gail Drago is a great overview of information concerning not only Etta, but also Butch and Sundance. The author has done her research well, citing the most current information known to date of these colorful outlaws. While she cannot really tell us who Etta Place is, she give us some food for thought on her character.
I would suggest this book to any fan of Etta, Butch, and Sundance. It is a great review of information that is solid.

I have visited Berlin twice, in two very different circumstances. The first time was the summer I turned 16 and I spent a month in Germany, two weeks of it living in Berlin. The second time was on the tail end of an 11-day trip across Central Europe. It was a one-day visit on Good Friday. Very different experiences, but this book brought me back to them both. As it says in the inside cover, "It's a longing for not only the Kurfürstendamnn but for the city as a whole with all its absurdities, which after the fall of the Wall and reunification flourish as never before." Few who love Berlin can describe they feeling they have for the city, but this book portrays it. It's the people, the streets, the parks, the strangeness, the looks on the faces of Berliners that does it for us. You will find all that in this amazing book. It's not a travel guide, although it does have some of the landmarks portrayed, but in unique, artistic form. If you're like me and live for Berlin between visits, this book will help ease the yearning to feel Berlin.

I am always looking to find practical tips and inspiration in a photography book and this one delivers that and more. The images are stunning. I felt as if I had attended a workshop and I can't wait to go on another trip to put what I learned into use! [It was also an excellent value].
