No Prouder Place: Canadians and the Bomber Command Experience 1939-1945Review Date: 2007-10-05
40,000 flew with Bomber Command, 9919 CasualtiesReview Date: 2006-12-20
In the publicity, the documentaries about bomber command, it is often overlooked that the British RAF really was composed of people from the British Empire. Australians, South Africans, New Zeelanders, Canadians and more fought along the airmen who were actually from England itself. Only lately have the contributions of these other forces to the overall effort been written about. This is the story of the Canadians, approximately 50,000 who flew in combat, 40,000 in bombers of whom 9,919 became casualties.
One of the enduring questions from World War II is the overall effectiveness of the bomber campaign against Germany. Was it worth all the money, all the lives it took? Mr. Bashow says that it was. He has included an Appendix called 'The Balance Sheet: The Costs and the Gains fo the Bombing Campaign.' This appendix is almost worth the cost of the book by itself. I don't think it will settle the issue forever, but it clearly states the position of the air forces involved. Further he quotes a number of German sources to illustrate, if not prove, his points.

THE Source for Nevada RailroadingReview Date: 2001-11-24
David Myrick did an excellent job of weaving history with technology in this readable work. Profusely illustrated, it connects time, place, and Nevada's colorful mining history together in a delightful fabric. The research appears flawless, as I have yet to find contradictory evidence in the several areas I have delved into. Reading the stories, one obtains a feel for the flow of commerce, the excitement of new discoveries, the character of the players in this real-life American drama. Detailed discussions of railroad technology, planning, construction, finance, and operations make this a delightful research tool.
The binding and printing are excellent, with beautiful crisp type and exceptionally clear photgraphs.
Overall, this set is a MUST for any serious student of Nevada railroads. Well worth the cost at todays price.

Thank You Col. GoleReview Date: 2005-03-11
Henry Gole was a career Army officer. He served in Korea, VietNam and in lots of peacetime positions. Along the way he got a Ph.D. and retired as a Colonel. Why, he asks himself. It was the men with whom he served. A most enjoyable book, especially at this time while so much of the Army is in Iraq.
I'm reminded of the Kipling poem 'Tommy:'
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy how's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.
Thank you Col. Gole.

Bring a "Transportation of Place" to your bookshelfReview Date: 2006-12-17
German villages in Africa, "Old West" frontier towns in Spain, Wall Street in Cuba, New York in Vegas, people in Washington state altering local architecture and dress to become a Bavarian community, and people in Germany attempting to dress and live as Native Americans are just some of the interesting series presented by Robbins and Becher in this superb book. In addition, Transportation of Place includes excellent essays by Lucy Lippard and Maurice Berger. This book is a must-see/must-read for contemporary artists, photographers, art audiences, and anyone interested in travel, politics, or the humanities.
One photographic series presented in the book documents "Old Tucson" (an outdoor film stage set - turned tourist attraction) in Arizona. "Old Tucson", constructed in 1938, miles away from, and built after the actual Tucson, Arizona, is neither "old" nor "Tucson." One image from the series keenly documents a wooden sign on the exterior of a "Candle Shop" that states in capital letters, "THESE BUILDINGS ARE ORIGINAL STRUCTURES FROM 1939's `ARIZONA' THEY WERE BUILT WITH ADOBE, THEN CONVERTED TO A WESTERN STREET THEN TO A MEXICAN COLONIAL STYLE FOR THE `THREE AMIGOS', RED TILE REPLACED THE ORIGINAL WOODEN BOARDWALKS, THE CURRENT FAĆADE IS APPROXIMATELY ONE FOOT IN FRONT OF THE ORIGINAL WESTERN BUILDINGS." Dislocated images and odd visual information of this nature illustrate why Robbins and Becher's work is truly "Surreal Nonfiction"... This is a wonderful book and highly recommended.
