Busath is one the most talented commercial photographers of our time. This book has some of the most gorgeous pictures of the metropolitan city surrounded by the majestic Wasatch mountains. A must have for anyone interested in The West and awe-inspiring photography.

A superbly compiled and presented collection of captioned and full color photographic images by Scott T. Smith and Stephen Trimble, "Salt Lake Impressions" is a visual celebration of Salt Lake City, the capital city of Utah, and the surrounding countryside that includes the Great Salt Lake basin and the surround Wasatch mountains. This compendium of engaging images includes elements of area's city architecture, natural landscapes, people and places. A remarkable photographic album of sights, many of which rise to the level of visual art, browsing through the pages of "Salt Lake Impressions" is the next best thing to actually being there. Also very highly recommended from Farcountry Press is another in their 'impressions' series: "Santa Fe Impressions".

Don't let the footnotes intimidate you. This book is not a difficult read; it's smart and beautifully observed, and it raises plenty of interesting questions, but the footnotes don't come across as pedantic and superfluous, as is sometimes the case with this type of move. Instead, the footnotes add interesting, often witty historical information on two things - Mormonism and the Utah Jazz, both of which are fundamental to the protagonist, Brian. You might even say that the novel's plot is this character simultaneously fighting against and embracing his own religious and cultural history. He's a transplant to Kalamazoo, Michigan, an outsider. Defrain does a terrific job of evoking the Midwest bleakness and oddballness that is Kalamazoo without resorting to cheap pop culture references and "Hey, I know that place!" landmarks. Brian's angst and loneliness feel real and justified, and when he embarks on a road trip to Utah with a potentially homicidal stranger, the reader is rooting for him all the way (while at the same time asking, "What the hell are you thinking?"). It's this type of complexity and dedication to character over gimmick that make this such a pleasant and satisfying read.

I love this book!! Every sentence is suspense filled! Right when one problem gets solved, right out of the blue another one comes!! Right when you think that Antium is caught he disappears and causes even more trouble!! It's one of those books that you are up until 1 in the morning look at the clock and tell yourself just one more chapter, and you are still reading after you finish that chapter. It's one of those books that you buy read it once and decide that you'll want to read every book in the series. Reading it once isn't enough!!!

Very interesting, well written, surprising premis. This book appears to be well documented and well thought out. I learned surprising facts surrounding the preparation of the Mormon people for the invasion of US troops to the Utah Territory. This history is not well known because much if it was executed in secrecy due to the mistrust between the Mormons and the US government at the time. The White Mountain Expedition explored, documented and mapped the last unexplored territory in the United States south of Alaska as a possible escape route and safe haven for the Utah people from the US troops. It showed decisions Brigham Young made based on The evacuation of Sebastopol during the Crimean War of 1855, inaccurate publcations from former explorers and from mountain men at the time. The book demonstrates that the White Mountain expedition was part of Young's overall strategy and was used in subsequent negotiations with the US government. The expeditions sent by Young chartered and mapped virgin territory. Freemont wrote about it but never explored it. I am not a historian but enjoy US history books, especially colonial and early us western history. This book is one of the most interesting I have read. It brings to the forefront issues not generally recognized by historians due to Brigham Young's decision not to make permanent settlements in the "White Mountain" area and the secrecy of the expediton. The White Mountain Expedition should be considered more seriously by historians in conjunction with the "Utah War" and Brigham Young's administration and stategies, and the mindset of the people. This book is especially valuable to decendants of the participants.

The Shipler family dominated photography in Utah for about 100 years. James Shipler left his Pittsburgh camera shop in 1889 to relocate in Salt Lake City and pioneered in photographer there. With his death in 1937, his son Harry succeeded him, with grandson Bill and great-grandson Hollis eventually taking their turn in the family business. About 100,000 Shipler glass-plate and film negatives survive in the archives of the Utah State Historical Society. Seeing Salt Lake City: The Legacy Of The Shipler Photographers comprises 175 of the best of these photographic legacy, reproduced as full-page images and historically showcasing Utah's capital city. From 1903 and a view of the Fremont School on Third West with a surrey parked outside awaiting its owner, to a 1940 photo of a row of Ford coupes outside the Crystal Palace Market on South Temple Street, each image is noted for its depth, clarity, and perspective, as well as the architecture evident with the growth and maturation of an American metropolis of the west. Seeing Salt Lake City is an impressive testament to one family's photographic artistry, and a welcome contribution to American photographic history.

It seems difficult to find good, solid, archaeological literature that is also easy to read. Seeking Center Place does both very well. The collected articles are highly informative without being weighed down by complicated writing. I recommend this book for both scholars and the general public. The Crow Canyon Center has come a very long way in their research and their publications are really a must for anyone studying or those curious about the Anasazi of Southwestern Colroado.
I used this book extensively in my PhD research and found that all of the articles had something of use, either by direct correlation or by broader generalizations. Add this book to your library, I don't think you will be displeased.
