Pennsylvania Books

I live in Girard so i enjoyed the book the pictures of history of things that aren't there any more I would recommend this book to anyone who likes history. The author is also a very good teacher!!

This third and final edition of Girlie and Buddy consists of 323 pages, including a 16 page index. It is an 8.5x11 softbound volume, complete with many photographs and original documents as well as appendices detailing the genealogy of five of the main families mentioned in the book.

During my recent move, I discovered 2 copies of my original 1989 edition of Girlie and Buddy - The Papers of Elizabeth Cook Wood Blystone. While crude by today's standards, I still remember typing much of it painstakingly on a manual typewriter for days at a time. It also prompted me to buy my very first computer back in 1989, just to be able to correct errors. There were only 15 copies produced, and I thought they were all long gone. It is 300 pages, softbound standard 8 1/2 X 11 sheets using a home binder that I bought just for that purpose. It contains several photos and scans of original documents. It consists primarily of letters written by my grandparents and their contemporaries, mostly between 1900-1925. The letters do provide unique insight and great detail about the daily lives of people here in rural Pennsylvania in the early 20th century. As I indicated, there were only 15 copies produced in total. I know one is in the University of Wisconsin, one is in the Pittsburgh genealogy society, and one is in Gannon University here in Erie. I can't remember what became of the others.

This book along with the "A Tract of Land called Appetite" were so well written and informative. Having lived my whole life in Monaca and knowing some of the history prior to the books was a base for understanding my hometown. These two books made things even clearer about the history of the town. The illustrations in both books are beautifully down. I have the good fortune to not only have Miss Vetter as a teacher, but to grow up as with her as my neighbor. She has since passed on. I know that I will cherish the books that she illustrated and also the picture she painted for me as a wedding gift.

This book is well-written look at what is required to set up a new household from scratch and how people dealt with it once-upon-a-time. Not only is it a detailed account of how it was done, it is also an excellent guide to how you can give your children a head start, a good start, in life through practical, managable means. I strongly recommend this to anyone interested in planning ahead and being prepared. Since this is my primary field of study, I would appreciate feedback on how, if at all, this book is of any help to you. Thanks.

The maps in this book are easy to read and have enough detail to actually get you where you're going without confusion. I loved the information on the Amish, and the guide for traveling with kids. Good choice, if you can find it!

This is a superb introduction to the subject. Childers makes a very complicated subject easy to understand. He humanizes the answer to the question--how did a civilized people, the Germans, end up with a monster like Hitler in charge? Highly recommended antidote to simplistic views.

It is worth having this important reference book on the Great Exhibitons in the later half of the nineteenth century. Lots of visual images. It covers nine international exhibitions, including the first Great Exhibition in 1851, New York 1853, Paris 1855, London 1862, Paris 1867, Philadelphia 1876, Paris 1878, Paris 1889, and Paris 1900. I hope that the author will continue to write on the following exhibitons, such as Paris 1925, the famous Arr Deco Exhibiton, and so on...

The Commonwealth is certainly no stranger to flooding and the disasters connected with it, and this book may be well known in the area.This book lists various ,different, floods and goes into the facts of them from the 1800's and 1900's, not all floods are included, but you get a general picture of the flood history of this great state and the resiliance of it's people, and near the end of the book, steps that have been taken over the years to deal with these events in the future as to prevent future disasters,it's an easy read with lots of pictures from earlier flood events.

I loved this book and how Ms. Flaherty captured a very specific time and place. The prose is very detailed yet universal. It is the story of an everyday hero, about fathers and sons, a very personal story set against a larger historical event, an uplifting story of everyday heroism in the face of a natural tragedy.

Children will love this book, but so will their parents. So I'd suggest buying two copies just in case.
