THE definitive book for Legal Research in Oregon
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-08
Professor Rowe does a brilliant job of simplifying the legal research process--a process that becomes easier and more fluid the more this book is consulted. As a reader of this book, you will have an edge on the competition as you soak up Professor Rowe's invaluable insight and experience that she complied as a law clerk, attorney, and Legal Research professor. It has both the personal touch and keen insight that only years of trial and error could provide; she did it so you don't have to. Complex research processes and tips are simplified in a way only a truly gifted educator could. You can tell that this book was tediously labored over and all potential holes have been covered. The result is a book that not only shows you the proper way to consult a wide array of research problems, but it encourages the kind of thought that distinguishes between the "good" researcher and the "great." If you read and consult this book often you will undoubtedly cut down on common legal research errors and time killers, and thereby become a far more efficient lawyer or law student. If it isn't already, this book will soon be required reading for all first year Legal Research and Writing classes in Oregon.

In addition, the book does a fantastic job of combining the necessary steps for thorough and accurate research for both traditional book research and on the internet (both Westlaw and Lexis). Professor Rowe is candid about the benefits and potential pitfalls of each method, and the result is a more plenary understanding of the research process. Among others topics, Rowe offers insight on often overlooked peripheral matters such as cost concerns and working within the real-life time constraints of your employer. The knowledge you gain from consulting this book for all legal research issues will provide you with the skills you need to be a precise and time-efficient legal researcher.

This book should be on the desks of every law student, paralegal, law clerk, attorney, and judge in the state of Oregon. It may be written for first year law students, but make no mistake about its simplicity: the thoroughness with which Professor Rowe addresses legal research make this an essential handbook for both the clueless first-year law student and the Chief Justice of Oregon.

An Oregon message

William Stafford is one of my favorite poets. His poetry is direct and as he once said, "much like talk." His subject matter is commonplace ("Volkswagen," "Why I am Happy," "Our Neighborhood"), often rural (he lives on a lake in Oregon), and open-palm honest and immediate ("You were a princess, lost; I/was a little bird. Nobody cared/where we went or how we sang").

His poetry is simple (as opposed to being grandiose or reaching for large effects), and it's in that simplicity that he serves up the most pleasure:

Now stand up. The old law says
work for pay. Try that shovel
or this broom, just to see
how it is, for a while.

This collection was published in 1987 and is as good if not better than the dozens of volumes by Stafford that preceded it. The book offers up a healthy number of poems (116); most are short (fewer than 25 lines). There is excellent work here by a wonderful poet.

I first saw this book in the waiting room of my dentist's office. As I browsed through it, I became immersed in the photographs and began to reminisce about places I had been, and found others I have yet to visit. The astounding beauty on each page and the poetic words of reflection convey a sense of dreaminess and awe at the experiencial opportunities that our State has to offer. The pictures in this book do a marvelous job of taking us there.

Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-09
This manual is right on target. It is succinct, easy to understand and provides in-depth guidance concerning the OR-OSHA inspection process and the employer's response if it is cited. This information is absolutely critical for safety and human resource professionals needing to adequately represent their employers during the inspection and at the informal conference with OR-OSHA. Every worker needs the right tool for the job. This is the right tool when faced with an OR-OSHA inspection.

Minimal text and a focus on photographic quality make for a lovely visual journey over the Oregon Trail which places one color plate with facing text per page. Accounts of Oregon Trail life and travels make for a history account which is personal and enhanced with modern portraits of the Trail.
