As a three going on four year resdient of the Silver State, I highly recommend this book for even short term visitors who want to see something more than the Vegas strip. There's more to Nevada than casinos - beautiful desert vistas and some really offbeat places, like Area 51, are a welcome break from the neon.

This is an excellent wildlife guide. Beautiful pictures, great maps, easy to follow directions to get to the viewing areas and easy to read text. This is currently my 6 year old son's favorite book (he reads above his grade level) and he is requesting other books in this series. He has learned a lot about the different animals that live in our home state and recognizes some of the places they list to view the animals.

If you visit Las Vegas, a trip to the Valley of Fire is a must! I bought this book because I wanted a reminder of how beautiful this area is and because my photos didn't do it justice. The photos in this book are beautiful and the history and background provided about the Valley makes me wish I'd had the book with me when I was there.

A wonderful book! I am far from my home in Nevada and swear I can smell the sagebrush, cattle and mountain streams as I turn the pages. This book brings the Silver State alive! I have had many comments from visitors who pick up the book and are amazed. Most are unaware of the beauty in this area generally thought of as a desolate "wasteland". Just like the State song, this book really showed that "Home Means Nevada" to me!

Valuable asset for adherents to late David Brower's promise to restore Glen Canyon as wild river. Read Scott Slovic's 21 page afterword...& understand that Glen canyon Dam may soon be by-passed,standing, as a concrete artfiact to man's defamation of nature. This set of articles, originally written for magazines and catlalogues, is one of the most eloquent collections of mountain writing I've yet come upon. The book is divided up into chapters such as 'Climbing with Style', which features articles about "the whole art of natural protection" written at the the start of the clean climbing revolution, and 'Further Aborad' which includes the authors account of a climb on Ama Dablam.
One of the features I most enoyed about the book was the introductions to various historical figures such as Smoke Blanchard and Royal Robbins. And the memoir style accounts of what it was like for a small band of climbers to live in the mountains away from civilization getting their kicks out of the "simple joys" and living in bare subsistence, long before climbing turned into the popular sport which it might be called today.
Doug Robinson is well qualified to write what he does, and his style is nice and clear without being base. Most of it is written in an autobiographical style, dealing with developments on the climbing and skiing scene for wenty odd years. If you are partial to a bit of Dharma Bums then get this book. Also anyone interested in the history of the Sierra Nevada.

The Grandfather of California Mountaineering

Norman clyde was a unique individual, a one of a kind! His mountaineering accomplishments with primitive technology is staggering. Hob en nail boots and hemp ropes would be laughed at today but in Norman's day it allowed him to do over 100 first accents which is a feat in itself, many done solo! Norman was more than a mountaineer, he could read in five different lanuages(to the best of my knowledge) and often carried numerous books on his journeys in his infamous 80 pound packs. I have spent thirty years of my life in the wilderness of the sierra's, guiding, backpacking, skiing, and climbing (some of the routes he established) and Norman Clyde was my inspiration from the first time I picked up this book in 1974. If you are a backpacker, adventurer, mountaineer, this book is a must read, his 29 essays will enlighten you, entertain you, and inspire you to explore and challenge one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world (my opinion). Any of you who have stood at Iceberg Lake in the Ansel Adams Wilderness and have stared at Clyde Minaret(Named in Norman's honor) or have climbed it know what I am talking about!

I finished this book several days ago. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down (so I didn't). This biography is a balanced picture of a man who was an enigma. I really appreciated that Pavlik didn't try to go beyond the available material to create a juicy analysis, even though a psychologist could have a field day analyzing Clyde. Clyde could spend months alone in the mountains, but also spent lots of time climbing with others, seemingly without ever letting down his guard enough to provide a cohesive picture of his personality. Pavlik's biography of this great, multi-faceted mountaineer is highly readable and informative. Pavlik describes Clydes's heroic side (pure love of the mountains), as well as his self-sabotaging side (e.g, getting fired as principal at Bishop H.S., insulting those weaker than he). For mountaineers, Pavlik presents descriptions of specific climbs.
