Gus Palmer Jr. is an anthropologist who was raised in a traditional Kiowa family. In Telling Stories The Kiowa Way, Palmer informatively examines the art and culture of storytelling among the Kiowa, throughout history and in the modern day. From the close-knit environment of family and good friends in which tales are shared; to the encouragement of group participation; to the value of teasing and joking; and the legacy of retold tales, Telling Stories The Kiowa Way is a thoughtful, scholarly, and fascinating study which is very highly recommended for students of Native American Studies and non-specialist general readers with an interest in Native American cultures.

I got this book as a gift, having never heard of it before. I'd never heard of it before, but am a fan of southwestern stories and about Glen Canyon in particular. Contrary to what I expected from the title, it's not just about the author's experiences rafting the Glen Canyon of the Colorado River. In fact, it's a collection of many essays covering about 30 years of his life in the desert southwest.
The essays are very personal and fairly emotionally charged. And yet, I didn't get turned off, because the author has a very conversational tone. There's lots of humor in here too, mainly in his descriptions of the strange people he's met in the desert. All in all, it was an easy and delightful read.
The first essay (which is where the book gets its title) alone is worth the price of the book, but I highly recommend reading the whole thing. And here's something that REALLY made reading the story about the Glen Canyon rafting trip a special treat for me. ...

The subtitle of Jonathan Hanson's There's A Bobcat In My Backyard! is 'Living with and Enjoying Urban Wildlife'. The regional focus is the Southwest, where nature is very close to human inhabitants. Author and urban wildlife expert Hanson should know: he is a veteran naturalist and his background lends to a discussion of how readers can live alongside wildlife peacefully - and can learn from the experience. Turn a backyard into a miniature wildlife refuge through thoughtful choices of food, water and habitat, cope with unwanted denizens, and learn to enjoy birds and mammals alike.

In a newly revised edition enhanced with a new epilogue and photographs, LaVerne Clark's They Sang For Horses: The Impact Of The Horse On Navajo & Apache Folklore, is a fascinating and informative study of how the acquisition of the horse transformed the mythology and cosmology of the southwestern Native American cultures of the Navajo and Apache. Chapters include: The Acquisition of the Horse; The Gift of the Gods; The Magic and Ritual of the Raid for Horses; The People's Ways for Keeping Horses Holy; The Horse's Powers Over the People's Health; The Horse's Role in Folk Customs and Other Ceremonies. A strongly recommended addition for any academic or community library Native American Studies reading list or reference collection, They Sang For Horses also features an extensive bibliography for further readings, as well as a "user friendly" index.

Co-written by the director of the University of Arizona Archaeological Field School at Grasshopper from 1979 to 1992, Thirty Years Into Yesterday: A History Of Archaeology At Grasshopper Pueblo is a historical account of that major archaeological project, and its field educational service which lasted for thirty years. The field school and also generated significant controversy even as it instructed scholars of international repute. Chapters break down major events in the field school's operation, and changes; a handful of black-and-white photographs, maps, and diagrams illustrate this thoughtful retrospective, and a detailed timeline of events allows for a unique at-a-glance perspective. Thirty Years Into Yesterday is a welcome and informative contribution to Arizona archaeology and history collections, as well as a fascinating case study of a complex archaeological field school and the intellectual debates it stimulated in the scientific community.

Volume 228 in the Medieval Renaissance Texts and Studies series, Three Medieval Rhetorical Arts is the reprinted discourse of three medieval authors on the topics of three different communication art forms. The essays are "The Principles of Letter-Writing" by Anonymous of Bologna (1135 A.D.), "The New Poetics" by Geoffrey of Vinsauf (1210 A.D.), and "The Form of Preaching" by Robert of Basevorn (1322 A.D.). All three readings are expertly translated into English and present insightful, erudite testimony of artistic values and virtues that have truly weathered the test of centuries and provide modern readers with a kind of "window in time" through which to glimpse a feeling for the culture of that time lost era. Three Medieval Rhetorical Arts is very highly recommended for Medieval Studies supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.

The Three Sedonas is a heartwarming tale by Lisa Schnebly Heidinger that recounts how the first Sedona came to Oak Creek Canyon in Arizona, and the history of how the town of Sedona came to be. Trevor V. Swanson's beautiful, realistic, wonderfully colored illustrations splendidly distinguish this picture book story of The Three Sedonas, and the pioneers who lived and shaped an American community's history.
