On the Verge of a Latino Renaissance

A dance demands a space. In Dance Between Two cultures: Latino Caribbean Literature Written in the U.S., William Luis shows us how to access that space. There we will understand that although there are notable differences between U.S. and Caribbean cultures, in the cities where many of our Spanish-speaking ancestors migrated, there is a nexus that narrow the distances. Anyone concerned with a serious understanding of U.S. Latino literature must have this book in their library. It is a perfect book to own on the verge of a Latino Renaissance.

A thoroughly 'user friendly' guide

The collaborative work of Edwin S. Iversen (Professor of Marine Science at the University of Miami Rosentiel School of Marine and Atomospheric Science for 37 years) and Renate H. Skinner (who earned her Ph.D in biological oceanography as a student of Dr. Iversen and ultimately became a district biologist for the State of Florida in Key Largo), "Dangerous Sea Life Of The West Atlantic, Caribbean, And Cult Of Mexico" is a compendium of toxic and otherwise dangerous sea creatures, each of which is superbly illustrated with color photography. These dangerous creatures are organized into sections showcasing species that bit, species that sting, species dangerous to eat, pest that harm swimmers, toxic mucus-secreting species, fish beak and processing injuries, and a very special section on human/animal interactions at modern tourist attractions such as Sea World. "Dangerous Sea Life" is an essential, strongly recommended reference, not just because of its identifications and descriptions, but also because is services as a thoroughly 'user friendly' guide to accident prevention and first aid when coming into contact with them. Anyone who uses the waters of the West Atlantic, the Caribbean, and/or the Gulf of Mexico for recreational, professional, or educational purposes should obtain and keep handy their very own copy of "Dangerous Sea Life".

Do you like fun books that really make you think? If so, then this is the book for you. A great summer read that will take you out on a beautiful yaught into the gorgeous waters of the Caribbean. Two couples who have not seen each other in years plan a seven day get-a-way on the luxury yaught, CANE MAIDEN. Sun, sailing, swimming, snorkeling, and reminiscing...all things that two couples would enjoy immensely. But then, everything goes wrong. After returning from a relaxing island dinner, the two couples find that their boat has been hijacked and they are being held captive on the beautiful boat that has now become thier prison. Working together the couples gain control of the vessel and then the lure of instant wealth changes each one of them--wife against husband, friend against friend. They each see each other, as well as him/herself, at their worst. What would you do to keep millions of dollars, if you had the chance. This book will make you wonder which character you would identify with. There are twists and turns all the way to the last page. This is one of the best books I have read in a long time...it really made me ask myself what I would do in such a situation. A great book to take with you on your next summer get-a-way.

I loved the book. I am Dominican and I can say proudly that I know my history; that's why I think the author of "dead man in paradise" really did his homework in order to show the reader the Dominican culture and history, as sad as it was. Do not think he is exaggerating about the cruelty and oppression of those days; he is not.

By many expressions in the book, I can tell he is really identified with the Dominican People. I do not know how long it took for him to write the book, but I can tell it was quite some time. You could not get to know such a complicated history in details in a few months.

I hope this book someday is translated into Spanish and put in the bookstores of the Dominican Republic. We would hear a lot about it since many people from the book are still alive, and still in powerful positions.

A moving meditation upon an iconic figure
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-21
"Dear Anne Frank" is a volume of poems about the young Jewish girl who, after her death during the Nazi Holocaust, became immortalized through the publication of her recovered diary. The author, Marjorie Agosin, is the descendant of European Jews who escaped the Holocaust; Agosin was raised in Chile. This is a bilingual edition, with Agosin's Spanish poems and the English translations on facing pages. Richard Schaaf is the primary translator, with additional translation done by Cola Franzen and Monica Bruno.

The book also includes Agosin's fascinating introductory essay, "Anne Frank or the Landscape Uprooted" (both in Spanish and in English translation). In this essay Agosin draws connections between the Nazi Holocaust and the atrocities committed under certain Latin American dictatorships.

Agosin's poems are somber and lean. Her voice is at times angry, at times compassionate, at times even a little wistful. She explores Anne Frank's role as young woman, as martyr, as writer, and as iconic figure. This is an important volume for those interested in Latin American literature, Holocaust studies, 20th century poetry, or Jewish studies.

Undisguised poetic thoughts about Gay life
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1999-04-27
This book is a refreshing look at contemporary Gay life that is not clouded by "political correctness" or special interests. It is simply an honest celebration of the joy that can be felt by the Gay or Lesbian through genuinely living life, as well as a sharing of the pain that can arise from troubled or failed relationships.

Its strength is in its unpolished honesty; refreshing for those who are tired of being told how Gay and Lesbian life should be lived. Deep Feelings simply reflects how our lives are lived, and provides a wonderful jumping point for entering a reflection on the reality of one's own life.
