A really delightful introduction to the Dominican Republic. The photography is superb and both the pictures and the text are sophisticated enough for adults.

I had already planned and booked my trip to DR so I did not need or want one of the MANY books out there on where to stay, what to do, etc. I had already taken care of all that. Instead, I wanted to learn about the history and culture of the DR, to gain some background knowledge on my travel destination. This book gave me a great overview of the country. The chapters are broken down into the following sections: a history of the nation; from plantation to vacation: DR today; Music, food & the arts; nature and outdoor activities; Santo Domingo, Mountain/river/central areas; the north coast; the east coast (sugar and sand); the southwest; and various facts/information (that are helpful to tourists). This book makes no mention of specific resorts, rather geographic areas and what each has to offer. There are many beautiful color photos throughout the book as well. It is a very quick and easy read, and because I read it I felt like I knew a little bit about the wonderful people of DR whom I came in contact with. Do not buy this book if you are looking for a Fodor's type book that lists and rates resorts, restaurants, etc. Buy it to get a brief lesson in DRs history and culture before traveling to the country. You won't be sorry!

This book is a compilation of lots of factual and historical items of interest to anyone wondering what the Dominican Order of the Roman Catholic Church is about. It is especially targeted to the branch of the Order known as Dominican Laity and contains the Rule for Lay Dominicans as well as the statutes of the Western U.S. Province.

I read this like a textbook, learned the techniques and ingredients in the restaurant food I enjoy when visiting the islands. Unfortunately, where I live, I cannot get many of the ingredients which are plentiful in the Caribbean. Namely - guava, mango, goat meat, papaya, breadfruit, etc. You can substitute many of the ingredients and make wonderful new items, otherwise you will just tease your tastebuds. However - this is one of the very very few Caribbean cookbooks printed in American measures so if you sail to the islands on your own boat, or rent a house there and do your own cooking, this book is an absolute must !!!!!!

A slender and enthusiastically recommended compendium of verse

A master wordsmith, Jeff Solomon's lyrical poetry addresses a diversity of issues and themes ranging from friendship lost, to a lover's caress, to the hopeful idealism of our dreams. "Dreams In Dawning" is a slender and enthusiastically recommended compendium of verse that is as emotionally rewarding as it is intellectually stimulating. 'Interpretation': As if your interpretation needs inspiration/Your medley intertwines with mine./As when your gifted voice blurs out a silhouette of seductive sound/Pound for pound we intertwine./We're capturing our thoughts individually,/Our pulse race so suddenly/Our hearts are the common link between you and me./It brings about joy of common medley.

Don't be fooled by the cover. This book is funny. It is insightful while extending a true message a the same time. The message is remember parables, stories heard from your youth. Upon gaining adulthood, you usually understood what your elders were saying. It is hard to explain without giving away the details of the book. This book reminds us of the familar and funny parables heard when growing up as children. Great message from a funny author. I am sending copies to all my friends.

One love!!

For some time America's international "war on drugs" has looked like a loser. We have a small shelf of good studies that explain why it isn't having any lasting effect on limiting the drugs reaching U.S. streets. Here at last is a book that tells the other side of the story - the consequences of that war for the supplier countries.

In Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, and the Caribbean it provides insightful, thoroughly-documented research on the "collateral damage" to fragile democracies and the environment caused by U.S. and national anti-drug policies. This is sober, careful analysis, not simplistic outrage. The different authors - from the region and the U.S. - know these countries from up close. They take seriously the problem of illegal drugs for these countries (and the U.S.) and weigh, for example, the differential effects of police, military and judicial approaches. The reader comes away with a good sense of the overall picture but also of the specific national contexts.

This book is also an illuminating point of entry to anyone interested more generally in how U.S. policy is made and its consequences on the ground, away from the headlines. It provides detailed information on all U.S. laws, agencies, and funding relating to drug control in Latin America, with separate chapters on military and police assistance for the region and a final chapter that, in Washington fashion, pulls together concrete, well-conceived recommendations for policy.

Since Ronald Reagan declared illicit drugs a national security threat in 1986, the U.S. "war" against them in Latin America has escalated through four subsequent administrations. This two-decade policy exemplifies in several ways the broader militarization of U.S. foreign policy since the Cold War described by the Washington Post's Dana Priest in "The Mission" - the same penchant to confront complex issues abroad with military means in policies increasingly shielded from congressional scrutiny and public view. This impressive analysis of drugs and democracy in Latin America - the older sibling of the current "war on terror" - will be sobering reading for anyone concerned about what this new global war portends.
