Specific Disabilities Books

I was a little disappointed when I received this book. I was hoping for at least some examples of each diagnostic test to get a better sense of the test. This book just listed the test and information about the population that it might be good for.

I have been a special education lawyer for 10 years and have found the earlier edition very helpful. Am thrilled to see a new and expanded edition. This book has been very helpful to a person needing information about standardized tests for educational purposes. Thank you.

The book is okay. For the class that I was taking it for, IEPs, it didn't do a great job of walking me through the process. However, it is easy to read and the stories of actual teachers are well written.

While this text offers a comprehensive treatment of the subject, I found it to be somewhat too verbose. There should be more diagrams and other comprehension aids. At times it felt as though I was reading a doctoral thesis.

I found this book to be of value. As a special education major with an emphasis on children with severe disabiities I found there was a lot of information in this book.
But due to the style of writing contained here, it is more of a reference book than something a student can use to gain quick knowedge of their field.

Many reading programs for correcting dyslexia are based on the Orton-Gillingham method, which is presented in this book. While the method has been proven clinically and empirically (and I know of people who swear by it in my country), it is now surpassed by newer methods which stem from it. Arguably, learning letter names and memorizing rules are some of the main drawbacks in this program. What makes this book money's worth is the systematic presentation of spelling patterns and generalizations.

This is the grandfather of all behavioral modification information, although it is long out of date. Foxx's information works whether or not you are using it in the area of teaching the DD client; it works with dogs, cats and chinchillas as well as people because its principles are universal. I recommend it for anyone who needs to understand how to train using positive reinforcment techniques.

This is a delightful memoir written by a woman who cannot hear. In losing her ability to hear, she gained an awareness of the importance of listening. It is that awareness that she shares in this book. _Listening_ is a composite of personal experiences and scientific studies regarding sound. The author speaks of sounds made and perceived in the natural world, bringing a fresh awareness of those sounds to her readers.

At this point the book is getting old. There is a lot of new material out there to write regarding inclusion---I should know since I wrote this book. In addition we, the authors did not write or believe in the last chapter of the book. The publisher wrote it---they are his opinions. Only a few main concepts are ours. And finally while I do believe that the inclusion of children with special needs is very important---we have learned alot since 1994 and have additional thoughts and opinions, as well as techniques We would also love it if Brookline Books would pay us for the last 4 years of sales--that would be very nice of Mr. Budolff. This text is a helpful tool as a resource for special education. It is easy to read and understand because of its relevance. It is also constructed in a manner that makes sense.

This 8th edition could easily be replaced with the 7th edition for a lot less money. The chapters contain basically the same information AND the 7th edition comes with a cd with strategies and the 8th edition does not have any extras. This is a paperback book and for the money, you would be better off saving it and getting the 7th edition.
