Wow -- a really well-done book that captures a wide spectrum of ideas and research on learning disabilities. What I find
remarkable about this book is that for nearly every test that is talked about here, the test authors themselves write the
chapter -- Woodcock writes about the Woodcock-Johnson, Feuerstein writes about dynamic assessment, and Reitan writes about
the Halstead-Reitan. An integrative chapter by the editors brings everything together. Worth checking out.

A "must read" for students, parents and educators"

Straight Talk About Learning Disabilites is a "must read" for parents, students and teachers dealing with learning disabilities.
The author's "straight forward" style is refreshing amid the lenghtly books and technical research journal excerpts about
learning disabilities. She fully explains learning disabilities in a simple, direct and concise style that makes for easy
reading and comprehension. The author does a great job explaining the often-confusing and overwhelming student evaluation
and diagnosis process and developing Individual Education Programs (IEP). I found the legal portion of the book extremely
informative and helpful as well as easy to understand. Kay Marie Porterfield writes about her own disability in the Preface,
"Scatterbrain," which I found entertaining, enlightening and inspiring. She proves to be a credible source and knows first-hand
what she's writing about. Although it's written primarily for young adults, everyone, including parents, educators and peers
should read the book to better understand learning disabilities. I've read many books and research articles aboutlearning
disabilities, this is the first one I found that clearly summarizes what it means to be learning disabled. I highly recommend
this easy-to-read book. It lives up to its title!

I represent a private, non-profit organization that provides evaluation and tutoring services for children K-8. We strongly
believe in professional development in order to maintain a high level of competency in the field of education. When our teachers
have an opening in their schedule, they select books like this to review, to reflect and to write a summary, which is submitted
to me for review and professional credit. Our entire teaching staff has found this book to be a good resource.

Dr. Lue's book, A Survey of Communications Disorders for the Classroom Teacher was an excellent book and resource. I used
it for my master's level class, Teaching Written and Spoken Language and it was very useful. In addition, to helping me to
better understand language acquisition, I also learned alot about language disorders. Further, the book goes into sufficient
detail that it does not presume a certain level of background knowledge needed to successfully use the book. I have added
this book to my personal library and would highly recommend it, especially to Special Educators, but a great resource for
all educators.

I teach Language Arts and Special Education at a high school outside of Denver where a disproportionatly large segment of
the student body struggles with learning disabilities. I opened this book expecting to see the type of academic rhetoric
common to articles and books on educational theory; what I found instead was a story of a mother and daughter that defied
the conventions of how teachers approach learning disablities. As well meaning as teachers can be, we can sometimes hinder
a student by placing labels and boxing him or her into how we think they should learn. Danielle's mother is a tenacious woman
that should serve as a sort of benchmark for any parent struggling to find support for their child. Danielle herself, through
her grade school trials and university accomplishments, has proven herself to be a poster-child for what a person can accomplish
when they decide that quitting is simply not an option. A big thank you to the Graves for sharing their story.

This is a must read for anyone who believes that they may have children with special needs. The struggle to a) get the needs
recognized officially and b) get the appropriate support from the education authorities is both poignant and inspiring. If
you have struggled with the inequity and callousness of the public educational system, if you are uncertain of your rights
and appropriate procedures, this is a great "how to" book.
