Children with Special Needs; Lessons for Early Childhood Pro

Review Date: 2003-01-28
I found this book to be excellant. It follows the early childhood experience of a number of children with different special needs. It covers interviews from parents, educators, and family members. I felt the book really emphasizes the idea that these are, first and foremost, children. They need the same experiences as many "typical" developing children. It also hits hard on the subject of the parental involvement and how important it is in the "BIG PICTURE". I would recommend this book for anyone working with children, preschool teachers, elementary teachers, and childcare providers alike. It is an "Easy Read" full of great and useful information>

A must read book for all teachers
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

With the outrageous increase in the number of children being labeled as "learning disabled" in public schools, this book is a must read for any teacher that truly cares about children learning more than "being creative." Preventing reading difficulties from the beginning is key to getting this country reading again.

Expert Research Clear and Concisely Written

I own the 3 volume version of this reference work as a PDF file electronic book. I needed this book to have in my special education classroom for young children with severe disabilities that often happen to be rare and unusual.

Each article is a gem of compact information, with references for further research. All the authorities who contributed articles are expert in their fields. An encyclopedia in alphabetical order, it also contains an index of key words, authors, and other features.

I recommend this to any special education teacher, pediatrician, school psychologist, principal, therapist, or others who need a reference for themselves, but who also want to be able to more clearly articulate data about a child to their families. If you work with children with special needs, then you have a special need for this book.

The Legal Guide for Individualized Education Programs
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.

You've heard the expression, "He wrote the book on that." Well, James N. Hollis wrote the book on proper legal procedures for Individualized Education Programs. His comprehensive guide groups legal procedures and recommendations by topic for quick and easy reference, including discipline issues, placement issues, goals and objectives, methodology, medical services, and assistive technology. Also, each section stands on its own, allowing you to skip portions not relevant to you.

His book serves as a legal guide for teachers, school administrators, parents, and even lawyers. (The book includes legal citations.) His book is a must-have for those who want to ensure that their Individualized Education Program will stand up to legal scrutiny.

A MUST BUY -- Reads like a novel, but packed with great info
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-04
There are those who teach ABOUT technology, and then write a text and there are those who DO technology and write about their experiences and insights. Scherer is a doer. This MUST READ book is packed with information and practical strategies, but it adds real-life personal stories to weave together and make sense of the many scattered pieces we know as "special education" today. This book is a real treat. It reads like a novel but leaves you with much wisdom as well as useful ideas and insights.

You will also find practical tip and examples. I will have good use for it as teacher and student and will get a copy for my son's teacher as well.
