This is a great little book. Tilston runs through the main arguments for being a vegetarian in a lucid and undogmatic style. He doesn't come across as a fanatic, just a sensible everyday sort of guy trying to make sense of the mass of information on the environment and health. He has clearly read a great deal of the latest research on these subjects. He deals with a few technical issues, such as land degradation and what our bodies need to run well, in clear everyday language. There is so much research these days that, as he points out, we can now draw some definitive conclusions in many areas. In areas where there are no straight answers, such as whether or not it's "right" to eat animals, he takes the reader through both sides of the argument. But perhaps the best thing about the book is that he has interspersed the arguments with his own experiences of being vegetarian, which makes it a light read of some heavy topics. And there's not a recipe to be seen.

Southern Africa's rich wildlife heritage includes 291 species of land living mammals. Of these, approximately 200 species are likely to be seen.

This handy field guide provides information on these 200 land mammals of the region and will assist the reader to identify the various species. Every entry has a small map indicating where they occur, an illustration of the animal, its paw print and a description of its size, habitat and habits.

The text and plates appear in the standard sequence of animal classification systems, and information is provided on orders and families, whilst the common names are also provided. There is also a section on the climate and vegetation of the Southern African sub-region.

Authentic in detail and color, the plates are beautifully executed and the animals are proportionally grouped together where possible. In its reference section a glossary, bibliography, index of scientific names, index of English names and index of Afrikaans names can assist the reader.

Wild Animals I have Known

People forget that they are not the only ones that have the daily chores of eating, sleeping, laughing, and loving. Earnest Thompson Seaton (who also wrote under the name of Ernest Seaton Thompson) shows the reader that in order to survive we must have an understanding of what animals have to go through in order for there own survival. Arneux is a good example of this in these fascinating stories. I highly recomend this book and many others that Seaton has written. He was the modern originator of this fantasy life, giving animals a soul, a purpose, characteristics, and feelings that many of us are unable to comprehend. In a society plagued with immoral standards and demeaning characteristics it is good to open up a book such as this and indulge. I first learned about Seaton through my grandfather who read these stories as a young man. It is good to know that standards can be passed on thorugh a storie. I am proud to know that as a race we can survive and flourish because we have had people in the past show us how to act. Seaton takes us to different places in each storie letting us learn a little bit about the animal, its traits, habits, feelings, and emotons. Whether good or bad we become a part of that animal. In doing this we take on the animals traits. I highly recommend this book and others that Seaton has written and wish that there were more authors like him.

Totally absorbing. A must for any Cocker owner
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-03-10
I'm not sure where to begin here. Being some what biased, I have two English Cocker Spaniels myself. This book is superb. It captures the very escence of these dogs. So much does Dinker parallel the character of one of our own that we even call her Dinker sometimes (the other one is a regular Flush) From beginning to end this book captures the magic of the English Cocker and delivers a message for all dog owners. Keep a dog well and he/she will love you forever and wait on the other side of the rainbow for you to catch up. The soliquay is a non stop flow of events and highlights the total commitent to life the author has, right up to her final living minutes. It also reveals the great strength of the relationship between a dog and its human companion, evident not only from Dinker's love of her Dad, but by the love that was showered upon Dinker. In particular, I can imagine that it goes a long way to alleviating the trauma in the loss of a loved pet. And I will re read this book when the day comes for our two. Good on ya, Dinker
