When Sabrina wants to see the Crushing Oranges concert, she bribes Salem into babysitting her cousin, Ally. Ally pushes Salem into Sabrina's magical storybook. He gets stuck in the story until he meets a genie and asks him to take him to the rabbit hole. But the golden goose was overlapping Alice in Wonderland and Salem was stuck with the golden goose. Poor Salem! But Sabrina (as usual) came to the rescue. I thought this book was so cute. Salem once again has gotten himself into trouble, even though it was sort of Ally's fault. I highly recommend it!

A bonus for presidential studies.

Franklin D. Mitchell has written an extensive portrayal of the pugnacious relationship between President Harry Truman and the news media. Truman liked the media, especially when it provided the public with images that displayed his down-to-earth personality. But the president often lost his temper when the media became critical of his family, friends, and his domestic policies.

Mitchell recounts how the media played an important role during the Truman years between 1945-1953. He provides the reader with a chronological narrative in history. Mitchell reviews the 1948 election that resulted in the greatest presidential miscall in journalistic history. He also touches base with the rise of women and minorities in the media, and how the newsreel and photojournalism contributed to the Truman presidency.

The book is interesting and extensively detailed. Highly recommended for anyone interested in Harry Truman or political/presidential studies.

This is an excellent book! I am currently a student in the Music for Healing and Transition Program, and this book perfectly dovetails with the classes. It describes in detail many topics needed to become a healing musician. I especially liked the chapter dealing with modal music and arrhythmic music. Also included are a CD and the sheet music to demonstrate the categories of music described in Ms. Benson's book. Anyone in the MHTP program needs to have this book!!

This is social history at its best, linking a time and a culture in a clear and concise manner. It is about what came to be known as "modernism" yet written in a surprisingly engaging and easy to understand style. Highly recommended.

Believe it or not...

Here is the weird thing. This book is 10 years old. And I am a public interest lawyer who has worked in government and non-profits -- the very antithesis of the "hot jobs" in media and the arts that Charlie Drozdyk writes about in this book and its follow-up, "Jobs That Don't Suck." And yet, I swear to God...these are two of the best and most relevant job search books that I have ever read. The books are funny, practical and brutally honest about the truths inherent to the job search and, particularly, success on first jobs. Yet, at the same time, they are never discouraging -- the tone is very much so, "Look, these folks are no smarter and no cooler than you, but they have fabulous jobs! You should get one too." There are so many true lessons in these books, and two of his mantras -- "The person who wants it the most gets it" and "There's never jobs, and there's always jobs" -- have become life lessons for more interns that I have supervised over the years than Mr. Drozdyk will ever know. The best proof of all: so far, I've bought five copies of "Hot Jobs" and eight of "Jobs That Don't Suck", to hand out to people who are just graduating from college and/or law school and need help figuring out what to do next. Charlie Drozdyk, you should be really, really proud of these books. Please write another one soon!

The House of Packer: The Making of a Media Empire

Media Studies Must-have
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-17
It is a truism that success rarely comes to three successive generations of a family. But Jamie Packer is the fourth generation success story in the media-owning family which never seems to strike failure.

"The House of Packer" goes back to Jamie's great-grandfather, R C Packer, newspaper and magazine proprietor in Sydney in the inter-war years, then on to R.C.'s son (later Sir) Frank Packer who started the Australian Women's Weekly and, later, TV Channel Nine.

It is a company history rather than a group biography, so there is information on union disputes, the introduction of new technology, Federal election campaign coverage, competition with other media companies and so on.

But it is the larger than life characters, so typical of journalism in the early to mid-twentieth century and so lacking today, which give the book its human interest. Along with the bold and vigorous writing.

The book concludes with Sir Frank's death and his son Kerry (Jamie's father) taking over the reins. It is an absolute must for people interested in media studies, economic history, political intrigue or just plain power.

If you ever wanted to know the REAL truth about TV/Radio news, and enjoy a lot of laughs along the way, "How high can a guy stoop?" IS A MUST READ!!
The author worked with TV news personalities such as Connie Chung, Maury Povach, and many others, and has a lot of very funny, and several very poignant stories to tell from his days covering everything from the big stories like the Vietnam War and the war protests in DC, airplane highjackings, the bombing of Judges etc., and the small stories covering everyday murders, meyham, and the county commission/courthouse such as getting Grand Jury reports before they were released. The very poignant story of his depression and how he coped with it,makes this book a very endearing and relatable read.
The author worked at TV stations in Washington DC, Tulsa OK, Dallas, Tx, and Little Rock,Ark.
Speaking for myself, I enjoyed reading this book VERY MUCH and would recommend it to anyone interested in how TV/Radio news is reported, produced, and aired!!
