Cale's Story is a rather grand book which extends the reader's knowledge further into the world (or universe) which has been created by the many makers of Titan A.E. There is an element of suspense at several key parts of the book which is sure to get the reader excited! I recommend this book to any science-fiction lover along with the 2 other books written to tie-in with the movie.

An excellant prequal that expands the film's universe.

Seperated from his father, whose fate he never learned, just before Earth was destroyed by the hostile Drej species, Cale Tucker was raised by one of his father's friends, Tek, a member of a peaceful alien race. Taken to Tek's desolate homeland, he grew up longing for his father's return, and eventually accepting that he'd never see him again. Tek is determined that Cale, now fifteen, learn something of Earth and Humanity, so, along with an orphan alien girl, they begin a journey that takes them throughout the galaxy. This book explained a lot of how Cale became the person he was in the movie - why he resented his father, why he looked down on drifter colonies, etc. I highly reccomend this companion novel to science fiction fans who are looking forward to seeing Titan A. E.

This book is exremely well-written, and its characters charming and humorous. It follows a great storyline of a few small-town people looking for a miracle, trying to improve ther lives and live out their dreams. It is funny and quaint, and, as with all Touched by an Angel stories, uplifting. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Touched by an Angel, and anyone who doesn't.

A STORY THAT MAKES YOU SING
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 15 total.

Bright with Michael McCurdy's striking woodblock illustrations, "The Train They Call The City of New Orleans," a classic tune captured by the voice of Arlo Guthrie, comes to lilting life beginning with a map of the train trip from Chicago to New Orleans.

Evocative of a time when most travelers in the United States crossed the country by train, the lyrics of this familiar song are preceded by a map of the train's route.

Beginning in wintry Illinois readers find the "restless riders" in one of those fifteen cars, and watch the conductors prepare for their duties. Sacks of mail are loaded, and then the train pulls out of Kankakee through "freight yards full of old black men and the graveyards of the rusted automobiles."

Later Pullman porters ready berths for the night as engineers guide the mammoth locomotive toward the Midwest and Louisiana.

Youngsters will respond to the arresting illustrations and soon be humming along with the narrative.

If you love the song, made famous by Arlo Guthrie, you probably like trains. If you like trains, this book is sure to delight you! It's a wonderful tribute to the classic folksong! Steve Goodman composed "The City of New Orleans" while riding the Illinois Central, while observing his fellow passengers and the passing landscape. Who can forget the warm images he recounted: of the old men playing cards, the young mother nursing her baby, the passengers being lulled to sleep by the rhythm of the rails? "Everything in this song actually happened," Goodman once said; "I'm no good at fiction." Michael McCurdy's illustrations, a combination of woodcuts and watercolors, must be seen and savored! The book is aimed toward children, and kids are certain to enjoy it. But I believe it will evoke stronger emotions in baby-boomers who remember the song and how it actually felt to "be gone 500 miles when the day is done".

This is a beatiful book carefully put together about a cherished topic...values within a famliy. It is a handbook for raising good kids. Our family atmosphere has changed since using such techniques as CAF (consider all factors), calling my children "My bright one", and standing firmly on the foundation of loving DISCIPLINE. You'd be crazy not to get this book!

Having recently loved the book, MARVA COLLINS' WAY by
Marva Collins and Civia Tamarkin, I was naturally excited to
find something else authored by this inspirational woman . . . in case you're not familiar with the name, she started her own
school in Chicago and made a difference in the lives of her
students.

Her VALUES: LIGHTING THE CANDLE OF EXCELLENCE,
A PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR THE FAMILY certainly did not
disappoint . . . it is a short but powerful collection of
essays about how all of us--not just teachers--can help to
raise good kids . . . get this valuable handbook if you're
a parent or grandparent, educator, or just plain interested
in helping children succeed in life.

Among the many memorable passages:
Think how many times a child will draw a picture and the
parent will say, "What is it?" The very words, "What is it?"
already say to your child, "Your picture is not very good
because I did not know what it was." Say instead, "What
a wonderful picture! Tell me about it."

How often do we begin to reprimand with the word Don't.
"Don't do this; don't do that." Try instead, "I think you are
making the wrong choice, bright one. Can you think of
a better choice?"

"Everybody hates me" is another statement used frequently
by the child who has learned to become a "victim." To this
question you might respond, "Everybody means everyone
in the whole world. This means people in China, Africa,
Switzerland, and places you have never visited, so how
could these people hate you?" Encourage your child to
conclude that not "everybody" hates him or her. Then say,
"Let's talk about the people you think hate you right now.
Can you think of anything that you may have done to
make you feel that these people hate you?"

I checked this book out from the library to read to my four-year-old daughter. We liked it so much we want a copy of our own. This is a story that rings true with my emotions as I recall my own childhood fears. Vera looks forward with eagerness to her first day of school, then becomes fearful when she approaches the schoolyard and finds it full of children. Children everywhere will identify with her sorrow when the day doesn't go as planned, and will also feel relief when everything turns out all right in the end.

The first day of school is SO EXCITING!

Almost all children wait and wait and wait until THEY are old enough to go to school. This is grown-up stuff, they think. Those feelings, though, can become overwhelmed by realizing that perhaps, just perhaps, they are not the most grown-up person at the school.

This story helps children and parents alike to understand the feelings, perceptions, and realities of the first day of school.
