I'm not kidding when I say that Michaels is a genius in romance novels. I have read The Merry Widows: Mary, and now she hands me this great book called The Merry Widows: Catherine. I loved Lord Romeo, the cat, and the hen. I liked the cat best. I liked Catherine because she isn't afraid of being a tomboy. A woman climbing trees back then was scandalous. I stayed up until 4:00 AM reading it. It was fantastic! I liked Gregory because he was just sooooooooooooo romantic. If Catherine is this good, I can't wait to read The Merry Widows: Sarah. Michaels, your stories are the best!

This is the perfect book for a Sonic the Hedgehog fan! At only 48 pages, it would also make a great gift for a beginning reader. It's an all-around winner.

For a book written based off a screenplay this is pretty decident and captures you into the plot. I suggest you pick it up even if you don't like books based off a screen play.

I watched the movie last 3 weeks and straight went back home and ordered the book online. Got the book yesterday and just finished it early this morning. AWESOME!!! Ten times better than the movie itself. Read it and you know what i meant... What you get from this book is a pair of separate, entertaining road comedies. It is a big deal to me since it is very hard to get a good book that based from celluloid. A very joyful and crazy reading with a lot of twists and funny lines. If i have to rate this book from 1 to 10, i would like to give 11. The book, the movie and the 2 great actors (Julia and Brad) will be my favorite things of this century.

The verbal shades/shards are here accompanied by intrigue in the form of photographs. Pictures of books, books depicted in her words. That combination makes this book something unexpected, though we expect and are rewarded by her challenges. Traversing from abandoned concrete and a forgotten train station in Buffalo to the closed cloister where Emily Dickinson's manuscripts are kept, and many other places in between, the range of subjects and objects here does not fail to hold the reader. How such wideness of topic can be spun into such compelling narrative is the mystery we admire. And there is humor here, also. So this could be a good first book of hers to read, or it could be said to pick up where Pierce-Arrow left off, with a thread or two from Frame Structures and Bed Hangings pursued to even greater effect. Buy, enjoy, learn from this book.

Hanging In The Balance

Just about the best of Howe's recent books THE MIDNIGHT is jampacked with allusion, drama, and poetry, sometimes withdrawn seductively from the reader, hidden in a clutch of quotations, and at other times lowered, as if from a great heught, tantalizingly in your face. She has always been one to look underneath the surface of things; as an actress her training was in the Poets Theater of Cambridge, and her mother was the famous Mary Manning of Dublin's Abbey Theater. Thus there's a tendency to examine, sometimes at length, the underside of process, the thickness of what we do and especially what we say, when writing takes place, as the wind that reveals the silver underside of the leaves we'd otherwise never notice.

THE MIDNIGHT is fairly shaking with sadness, regret, and the stern obligations of memory, as Howe again scans the marginalia of another. This time it's her late uncle and the books he left behind in a seemingly otherwise blank (or pathetic) existence, specifically his copies of R L Stevenson-the novelist admired above all others by Howe's hero Henry James. As she turns the pages of the novel, parts of her uncle's life (and family photographs) seem to pop out like something from a Nick Bantock novel, but it's all part of Howe's finely tuned poetry machine, the unexpected choice of word and quotation, the sizzle of disjunction and more than anything else, the shiver of anticipation that one is getting something from this poetry unavailable elsewhere, a direct pipeline into a strain of American experience that the past has otherwise denied us. It's suspenseful, and fun too, like an Indiana Jones movie. Don't let people tell you differently.

A 'must read' for anyone who has been touched by cancer

Having myself grown up in Dallas, I have watched Chip Moody for many years. There would always be a night when Mr. Moody wasn't in his usual anchor chair behind the news desk ~ he was back in the hospital. My brother was just diagnosed with cancer, and it appears to be the kind that the author of this book has ~ lymphoma. So I was not at all interested in reading a "sterile' medical thesis or a 'grab your hankie' sad story. Mr. Moody tells of his many adventures throughout life. Some have come from being in the profession that he is, and some from having the cancer that he has found himself facing. But be prepared to laugh, Mr. Moody has a real knack for telling stories! There are several chapters that deal with the cancer specifically and what he has gone through from the beginning. This was scary, yet reassuring to read ~ being not from a doctor's standpoint, but from a 'real' person's. The last chapter offers true words of encouragement, especially to those who are going through, or getting ready to go through this tough battle ~ be it as a patient, family member, or friend. I cannot give this book enough stars. Mr. Moody has made me realize that a person can fight back this debilitating disease. Although not all will be victorious in this battle, their courageous fight will enable future warriors more powerful weapons and skills on how to conquer this dreaded enemy. Thank you Mr. Moody ~ All my stars to you.

A gripping, taut thriller
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-07
I've never read anything by the authors before, having been given this book 2nd hand to me as a gift, but I will be sure to look for more of their work.

The book reads almost like a conspiracy theory - revolutionary powers, principally led by Fidel Castro, seek to destroy or at least severely destabilize the USA through the cunning manipulation of race riots, murder and sabotage. The one person doggedly following the story is Robert Hockney, a journalist. When his pregnant wife is savagely raped and murdered, he becomes determined to see the masterminds behind it brought to justice, even if not in a legal sense.

The riots are limited to two cities - Miami and New York. Oddly enough, part of the plan in NYC involves an attack on the World Trade Center. The book was originally written in 1984, but now, 5 years after 9/11, it's eerie to read the fictitious terrorist attack on that same building, reading of someone jumping to their death afraid of the flames on their floor.

Again, it's a well crafted thriller. It took me about a quarter of the way to get into it and start following the seemingly random loose ends, but I assure you the last third is nothing short of gripping, which I had difficulty putting down.

One worthy of the 5 stars, and definitely one I'd recommend reading.

Fidel Castro meets with the Sandinistas in Nicragua

Sound like a Cold War newspaper headline? Sound too good to be true? Well, I have news for you, my friend, IT'S TRUE! Robert Hockney's back. This time he's married to Julia Cummings and they're expecting a baby. Monimbo's the code-name of a Cuban plan to bring the United States to its knees. It begins with a conference in Monimbo, Nicragua, and one of the people there, an eighteen-year-old Nicaraguan named Monkey Diaz, defects to the United States and warns the new President of this plan but nobody believes him. Except for Hockney, who's now the Washington editor of the New York World, a couple of Miami cops, and an FBI agent in San Juan, Puerto Rico. A U.S. Senator's kidnapped and assassinated by Puerto Rican nationalists. Then there are a series of blackouts up and down the east coast from Miami to New York. According to the book, the Mariel Boat Lift of 1980 was part of this plan. A CI for the Miami police and Julia Hockney are both killed in the rioting in Miami when the blackout hits that city. The same thing happens in New York.

Angry and defensive that Holt is taking her print without her permission to dig up dirt on her.

Favorite scene with Holt-
Confronting the bad guy, while trying to protect Molly at the same time.

Together-
Angry and defensive that Holt is taking her print without her permission to dig up dirt on her.

What did you like about Molly-
Her love for her work. Her love for Holt. Not judging him. She also helped him through his pain. She had a good heart.

What didn't you like about Molly-
This is not really a dislike, but she allowed her ex to make her a victim.

What did you like about Holt-
His love for Molly. Despite being from L.A., he had a good heart. He felt guilty for his partner's death, proving how good his heart was. Sensitive, yet strong. How wonderful when he reunited her with her sister.

There wasn't anything I didn't like about Holt.

Casting Holt, I'd cast Mark Consuelos.

Different! Non-denominational and so well done.
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-25
I love spell books and if you are the same way, this is a must have for your collection. It has it all: The days of the week best to perform a spell, the phase of the moon, magickal tools, directions to face, formations to cast etc. It is your cookbook type of publication which makes it easy to figure out. The affirmations before each spell are beautiful. They make you think and are good advice. Diane stays non-denominational and combines belief systems. I have heard you should not combine systems and then I have heard whatever works for you is best.
Well, the way she takes you through these rituals is perfect for me. This book is different because it is not based on astrology, just the basic moon phases. I loved her other book "White Light The Complete Guide to Spells and Rituals for Psychic Protection" but for me this book is more fun and something you use time after time...

Finally A Spell Book for Every Day People
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-05
I love Diane's book. It's one of the few spell books that offers ritual and ceremony work using tools that are easily accessible. Most of the tools I already have in my posession. The author is gifted with a user-friendly wording style. Just reading the book was a healing in itself. If you enjoy working with candles, incense, and crystals and you are interested in moon cycle work, this book is a must have. She constantly reminds you to make adjustments if something's not comfortable for you. The book is emeshed with health, love and spirtuality. The author offers step by step directions for those new to the art of spell casting. It's the kind of book whereby you don't mind sharing spells with family and friends. Ahlquist covers everything from A-Z and provides a host of positive information.
