Larry Wallack, Katie Woodruff and Lori Dorfman are recognized experts in media advocacy. This book was a textbook for my media communications course in a graduate school of public health. I would recommend this book for anyone who would like a better understanding of how to work with the media to support advocacy and policy issues, in any subject area. It incorporates a workbook style, with examples of press releases, letters, etc. It's a how-to for hands-on folks. There are also other books focusing on media advocacy, written by Wallack and Dorfman, that I would highly recommend. But News for a Change is an excellent starting point for anyone who needs the media to cover an advocacy/policy issue.

Essays by more than a dozen of the country's top media scholars, critics and journalists discuss how the corporate ownership of the media holds dangers to the American democratic process itself, from issues of standardization in program content and party lines to the demise of local interests and the nationalization of the news media itself. Recommended as critical reading for any college-level student of journalism, News Incorporated: Corporate Media Ownership And Its Threat To Democracy considers the underlying dangers in how the current news delivery system is structured and regulated, and how it could be fixed.

Elliot Cohen's new book, News Incorporated, is an extremely valuable contribution to contemporary discussions about the failure of the American media to promote American interests. The book is scholarly, but accessible; it is provocative but suitably practical. If you want to understand what's happening in America today, you need to read this book.

This is a wonderful book for beginning news journalists. The price is a sticking point, however. The cover is marked, "You asked ... We listened! A truly affordable workbook for your students!" A $60 workbook isn't exactly "affordable."

Rogers has a wonderful ability to communicate the essence of deadline writing and it is on display in this book. The exercises are incredibly helpful and it is evident that they sprang from the mind of someone with real-world journalistic experience. This is a must have for journalism students. There is nothing on the market right now that will teach them one of the most important and least taught skills: writing under deadline pressure.

Having been in the middle of a number of crisis communications incidents at a university and medical institution, I immediately related to Baron's examples of the feeding frenzy that is the media world today. His discussion of the tendency to seek easy villains without concern for truth is very useful to draw on when talking to people caught in the middle of a feeding frenzy - or even people just trying to plan for the inevitable day when there will be a crisis. I was reminded of reasons that many of us have left journalism ... That all said, one should quickly note that it's not just the media that create the frenzy - it's also all of us who consume the media. And now, many of the people who were formerly consumers can 'make' news themselves. Baron covers all the new ways that people in all parts of the community can use technology to raise issues, both for good and bad.

This book is a really good book. Out of all of the books in the series, this one is definitely my favorite. It talks about the scavenger hunt held in LA for charity. It is told from the different view points of the four main characters, Seth, Summer, Ryan, and Marissa. It is very funny as well, almost as funny as the television series itself. All in all, an awesome read if you're a fan of the OC (and even if you're not) :)

The mother-infant relationship of chimpanzees is similar to that of humans, and children will be educated and entertained by this delightful series of eight books describing the loving relationship of a young chimp and his mother.
The first book in the series, Okomi: The New Baby, introduces the reader to Mama Du, an important female chimpanzee, her recently born baby, Okomi, Okomi's father, Dada Du, and their life in an African forest.
The second book, Okomi and the Tickling Game, finds Okomi and his mother lying in the shade on a hot summer day. After waking up from her nap Mama Du tickles a sleepy Okomi until she becomes tired. Okomi then decides to tickle his mother and they enjoy the "tickling game" until they become hungry, hug and go off to find some food.
Further stories find Okomi having fun playing in leaves and learning to climb a tree. Okomi Enjoys His Outings describes new things that the young chimp discovers when on a walk with his mother, while Okomi Wakes Up Early finds an energetic and playful Okomi having fun under the watchful eyes of a patient and loving mother.
Okomi Goes "Fishing" has Mama Du teaching her young son how to get termites out of their hill and eat them, and Okomi Wanders Too Far tells how the baby chimp wanders off and temporarily gets separated from his mother.
The stories are very simple and describe situations that young children will relate to. Children will also learn about chimpanzees as the stories are "based upon real events and natural chimp behavior in the wild as observed by Jane Goodall." The first time that I read one of the Okomi books to our son Liam, he liked it so much that I had to immediately read it to him two more times!
Some of the proceeds from the sale of the Okomi books supports the work of The Jane Goodall Institute's Tchimpounga Sanctuary in the Congo Republic where there are more than 100 orphan chimpanzees. --Glenn Perrett

Collaboratively written by Helen and Clive Dorman under the auspices of The Jane Goodall Institute, Okomi: The New Baby is the first in a series about the relationship between a chimpanzee infant and its mother. A warm and gentle story for beginning readers, with thoughtful color illustrations by Tony Hutchings, and a deep sympathy for humans' primate relatives. Also highly recommended are the three other titles in this outstanding series for very young readers, Okomi And The Tickling Game; Okomi: Plays In The Leaves; and Okomi Climbs A Tree.

Our Favourite Movie of all time

I'm surprised that this movie did not do well in the box office, it is the most excellent romantic comedy.
We have over 600 DVD's in our collection - and we have watched this movie so often its beginning to break up.
It been there while my wife was unwell with mental illness - as a feel good movie - somewhere she should could relax, and feel comfortable and safe while watching it.
Over time I too have grown to love the lines, the characters and the kids/animals.
It starts well and ends well and a lot of amusement in the middle.
I agree that it ended ideally for a sequel, its a pity one was not made.
If I could give this movie 10 stars - I would give it - its an all time favourite.

The movie tie-in for ONE FINE DAY is a pleasant read for anyone who enjoyed the movie. This is a wonderful book/movie for someone looking for proof that you can have both in today's crazy world. These are 2 parents with great careers and great kids. It's no wonder they found each other & fall in love. It is a surprising love story in that the romance is prominent, but not at all what you expect. It's more true to form for today's single parents. The kids come first, then career, then love. The end sets up nicely for a sequel, although the disappointing box office receipts will probably not allow for it. The release against Jerry Maguire doomed this movie, but if you're looking for the love story you thought you were getting in Jerry Maguire, minus the sex and four-letter words, One Fine Day is the place to go. This is a much sweeter love story than JM, with a much better looking actor on the cover for distraction!

This is a very gentle story, enthrallingly soothingly told, with illustrations that make you feel cozy despite the preponderance of snow depicted on every page. The parallel between Martha the cow's birth story and the sparely told Nativity is just right--not overdone, never preachy. The willingness of the human couple to exercise concern for Martha is a nice touch and lends a magical feature to the story. My 15-month-old son is just beginning to develop an interest in story time, and this is one he insists on almost every night!

This book is awesome. It shows that mother's and daughters not only fight but get along too. Although Darcy Lou may seam to have a "perfect" relationship with her mother, the rest of the book is quite solid. It shows that kids aren't the only ones who make mistakes and somethimes the thing you need most is right under your nose. It also shows that you don't have to have lots of money to be absolutly rich. A group of people who care about is worth much more. Unlike money, they'll always be there and they are unreplacable. You must read this sweet little book!
