Like most people, as you get older your hearing gets worse and worse but you place the blame on the movie makers or the failure of people not speaking loud enough. This book gives excellent information and advise on hearing loss. Some of the information on hearing aids is a little dated but you can find that with a little research on the internet. My new hearing aids from America Hears are fantastic. I can even hear the birds chirping again.

Kudos to clinical audiologist Richard Carmen for assembling this all-star cast of experts. I found this affordable, accessible volume to be loaded with interesting and practical information for us hard of hearing. Audiologists and scientists discuss the psychology and management of hearing loss, and new hearing technologies, and answer lots of questions: What causes ringing in the ears? How do aging, drugs, and noise affect hearing? What are the varieties of hearing aids now available? What cool new hearing assistance technologies might improve my life?

What a book this is. When I found out that I was going to need hearing aids I was thrilled and scared to death. How was this really going to change my life? Well this book (both editions) helped ease my fears. With the group of experts that the author brings together many questions are answered and one realizes that they are not alone. One thing that I found was that although the second edition was improved, some of the articles in the first edition that were deleted from the second was very helpful also; Great book(s)!

Excellent guide to overcoming Hearing Loss fears!

This is not just for the person who has suffered hearing lose and needs help, but also for the rest of the family who needs to support and help as well. This book really cannot go recommended enough! Some of the greatest scientists/audiologists that there is have come together to share in good basic English to help. Exceptional!!

Get Cool Boy! Read Deaf Side Story

Fans of theatre, American Sign Language and Deaf culture and/or multicultural studies will LOVE Deaf Side Story. It's a tale of the hard work, perseverance, and joy that is educational theatre, peppered with the challenges of a multi-lingual company of players. The dynamics of Deaf and hearing actors, students and theatre professionals make a riveting story. Mr. Rigney's inside view of the production makes this a truly personal piece - readers get to know the players personally and become almost as attached to the outcome as the cast and production team. I highly recommend this book!

An exhilarating read!

Probably because Mark Rigney is primarily novelist, writer of short stories, and playwright, this book gallops along as if it were fiction, and keeps the reader's interest riveted cover to cover. The story is of an extraordinary theatrical accomplishment: a production of West Side Story with the Anglo gang-the Jets-played by hearing actors, and the rival Puerto Ricans-the Sharks-by deaf students. The venue was a makeshift theater at a small liberal arts college in Jacksonville, Illinois; the town happens to be also the home of a school for the deaf. The director of the show was Diane Brewer, who is young, ambitious and very brave-and, at the time, pregnant.. Apart from the descriptions of the nail-biting drama of getting the show to work-don't forget we are talking about a musical no less-the book offers a rare glimpse into Deaf culture and the fascinating languages used to communicate. The final triumph of the play was not only a rousing good performance with standing-room-only audiences, but also a definite breakthrough in the barriers that separate the worlds of the hearing and the Deaf. Get this book for an exhilarating read, and for a learning experience with no pain. My only sadness is that there were too few photographs-which caused me regretfully to drop one star.

Unsurpassed Suspense Tale

How a mixed cast of deaf and hearing students signed, sang and danced together to perform Leonard Bernstein's complex musical "West Side Story" is a fascinating chronicle of ingenuity and determination.

How the director and staff managed to pull it off is an inspirational suspense tale unsurpassed in amateur theatre (maybe professional theatre as well). Does your spirit need a lift? Read this book.

A must-read for all theater-goers!

Right on the heels of Deaf West Theatre's successful deaf/hearing Broadway production of the musical "Big River," this fascinating book explores one small Midwest college's similarly experimental production of "West Side Story." Author Mark Rigney eloquently and passionately explores the divide between theatre for the deaf and theatre for the hearing, intimating that this rupture runs deeper than any American is willing to admit. As a member of the hearing community, I was shocked to learn how much I don't know about the lives of the deaf. As a member of the theatre community, I was taken on a spellbinding journey through the trials and tribulations of a production riddled with hurdles but blessed with triumphs. As a member of the world community, I was heartened by the success of communication across boundaries in a seemingly boundary-less small town. This was definitely a page turner from beginning to end...just the right balance of information and entertainment. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in theater, the deaf community and its position in society, and/or interpersonal communication.

As a hearing impaired person of many years, I thought I was well versed in the hows and whys of hearing loss. But this book taught me many things I had never realized. My family members also read this book and it helped us all to communicate much more effectively with one another. I also shared this book with health professionals who deal with the elderly, and they found it so useful they bought their own copies.

I read this book as an assignment for an American Sign Language course I was taking at the local community college. I expected a dull, boring read and was very surprised. Lorraine Fletchers' account of her child's first few years is heart wrenching and (at the same time) triumphant. A must read for hearing parents of Deaf children.

A remarkable read for educators of the hearing impaired!

Ms. English has written a very concise and useful book for audiologist and educators. Very few people have been able to link more clearly than she the impact of hearing loss on education and how that hearing loss makes educational attainment that much more difficult for these children. Not only does she talk about the responsibilities of audiologists, but also of parents and educators in making learning more accessible for students who are deaf or have varying degrees of hearing loss. The book provides significant background and references which can further the education of those interested in helping this particular population cease to be at high risk both in education and other areas, such as medical care. I highly encourage libraries, teachers of Deaf children, and medical students to be exposed to this book or to purchase it for their continued use. I am constantly finding new information in it that I missed in the first reading and it continues to be one of my primary reference books in my library. She is both fair and practical, and this certainly is one of the first books of its kind. Karen L. Sadler, Science Education, University of Pittsburgh, klsst23@pitt.edu

I was surprised to find that no one had written a review about this book. I know it has been used as a recommended textbook at the University of Pittsburgh in Deaf Education and Educational Psychology, and it was recommended to me by at least four professors. This may constitute part of the problem in deaf and special education, and regular education in public schools for deaf and hearing impaired children. The little amount of research that is being done by people like Marc Marschark, who is a genius in my opinion, is not filtering down to those who need to use this information in making sure that equal opportunity to education is available to these children, no matter what environment they are placed in.

I specifically went to read what Marschark has written about intelligence, memory, and attention in deaf children. Since I am totally deaf, I recognize some of the problems that arise when a child is presented with nothing but verbal/oral material in a learning situation. Marschark did more research than he needed to or others would have done, and he pulls all the research together to make a comprehensible whole. The references he provides in this book are valuable for referring back to and reading on their own, since he places them in context. This book was published in 1993, and I really think an update is needed because neuroscience has found out some significant information over the last few years that apply to teaching and understanding the workings of the mind in the presence of deafness or hearing loss. For example, it has been shown that prelingually-deafened adults use their auditory cortex when lipreading or using American Sign Language. This indicates a rewiring of the brain which occurs in children whose deafness is caught early enough to use manual language with or teach lipreading skills to. This information could be vitally important in teaching those with hearing loss, and also be used to pressure Congress to demand that all newborns be tested for hearing loss prior to leaving the hospital. The importance of determining hearing loss early is mandatory to providing these children with educational opportunities early enough to make up for their diversity (I refuse to call it a disability when the Deaf community does not recognize it as such).

Marschark writes well. The book is immensely readable. He also provides enough information to show that deafness does not equate with lack of intelligence, for which I am supremely thankful. Karen Sadler, Science Education, University of Pittsburgh

The book is just filled with so much information regarding the deaf-world.

I have been working with the deaf for over 20 years and had no idea the nuonces of the ASL language.

I recently started talking sign language over again just to catch up.

You will begin to really understand how little the hearing understand about the deaf world.

I highly recommend this book for those who truely want to understand the deaf culture.

This will truly take you on a journey!

I am a CODA and have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. This book goes deep into the heart of numerous issues. I will admit, there are portions of the book that seem to be dry, but within a few paragraphs it becomes riveting. I have learned so much about the world I grew up in and appreciate the honest and straight-forward material. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to learn more about Deaf people, Deaf culture, and deafness.

An excellent book, which spans the subjects of Deaf education, history, culture, communication, language, and social interaction.
Very enlightening as to the aspects of everyday life for a Deaf individual. This book opened my eyes to how it would feel to be Deaf, living in a world controlled (for the most part) by hearing people.
For those studying to be interpreters, or the casually interested reader, this book will be a wonderful addition to your library.
