This is an excellent book. Dr. Gravetter and Dr. Forsano present information in a straightforward, easy to understand manner. I just wish they would have chosen a different cover.

This one really helps. I think it's the best career change book
I have read in a long time. It's so easy to follow, and I've been doing just that, and have made real progress in moving to a new career after early retirement in the health services field.

We live near Amish country (in Pennsylvania, even!), so this was like a neighbor's tale for my grand-daughter. She had just taken a few quilting lessons to make her baby brother a log cabin quilt for Christmas (well, it started as for her parents, then shrunk to baby brother, and from Christmas it has now moved to someday), so this story of a log cabin quilt really hit the mark. It was beautifully illustrated, strong family and faith values and left you wondering what really happened.

Excellent children's book explaining Amish people and their beliefs. Short story that would keep the interest of a child but also teach them Amish words and ways. Illustrations are excellent. I purchased this book for my grandchildren and am sure they will enjoy it as much as I do.

This book has lots of little windows that open to show what's going on behind them. It has been great entertainment throughout the first two years of my daughter's life and probably for at least two more! When she was very small she enjoyed touching the flaps and watching me open them. Now she can open them by herself and fold the book out into a town.

Yippee Yiyo kiyay! This is a great book for little cowboys!

I am writing this review for my 21-month-old son because he can't talk clearly yet, let along write, about his favorite book. Ride `Em Cowboy by Stefan Czernecki is a perfect toddler boy's book. The pictures are clear, action-packed and engaging; the text is short, action oriented, and loud. Sprinkled throughout the book are classic cowboy interjections and sounds such as, Yahoo! and Whoopee! Yee-ha! Cloppety, Clop! and Whoa, boy! Additionally, roosters crow to the sun and owls hoot to the moon. Best of all, Ride `Em Cowboy features horses and cowboys going about their exciting day. This is the kind of book that very active toddler boys (or girls) love. I recommend it for energetic little ones ages 18-months through around 6. One-year-olds will love the bright, clear pictures and fun sounds while older preschoolers will love Czernecki's sense of humor ("Ride Jumpin' Jack Rabbits! Why not?"). So if you parent an active toddler or preschooler, buy this book! It is a fun read even after you've read it over and over and over and over.

A note to the publishers: Please, please sell this book as a board book as well as a regular page book. Our copy will not be long in this world with the amount of love and use it gets.

Engagingly written and distinctively illustrated

Engagingly written and distinctively illustrated with photography utilizing authentic folk art and handcrafted props in make-believe scenarios, by Stefan Czernecki, Ride'Em Cowboy takes young readers ages 4 to 7 seven through a day's work on the range. Beginning with the crow of a rooster in the morning and the cowboys saddling up their horses for a days work of roping, riding; and a whole lot more, to the end of a long day's work and time to kick up a little fun square dancing, singing, and spending their pay, to bedtime and dreams of riding the rodeo, this colorful, lively, wonderfully entertaining picturebook story is a welcome and recommended addition to any child's reading list -- especially if they have cowboy dreams of their own!

My name is Russell too, but I am a good Russell. The Russell in the story is nice but sometimes he's naughty. After Germy and Russell hit eachother they were friends again. I learned to read with these books, now I can read! That's all I want to say!

P.S. from Russell's mommy: these books are wonderful, perfect for any emergent reader, and just fine for energetic little boys. It was fun to read realistic vignettes set in the city. I liked the chapter where Russell goes out for Chinese food with grandparents, it was familiar! We have read all of them in the series, one is funnier than the next! Johanna Hurwitz has the heart of Beverly Cleary, and the talent, too, but with a style all her own. Don't miss these lovely read-alouds!

Five year old boy experiences some of lifes moments shared by other children. Chapters have stand-alone themes, so it is greaat for a chapter a day before bed or at school. It explores disappointment, fighting at school, a first chinese dinner and wanting attention. Delightful, although I changed use of "stupid" to "dumb" that Russell uses. A great book for students from K through 4th grade, as well as parents. It is a humorous, family oriented book.

Mr. Volponi does it again!

Rooftop is another excellent book by Mr. Volponi. I'm very shocked there is only review for this amazing book.

Once again Mr. Volponi is able to capture the harsh reality of inner city life without being preachy or condescending.

Clay is arrested for smoking pot while his cousin Addison is a crack dealer. Both attend Daytop, which is a day treatment program to help teens stay away from drugs and make better choices. Clay struggles to stay clean and tries to get his GED. Meanwhile, Addison has a harder time of leaving his past behind and goes back to his old ways.

One night, Addison chases another teen who owes him money. Up on the rooftop a terrible incident occurs and Addison is shot by a white police officer in front of Clay. Clay has to make a choice. Does he fold to community pressure or does he tell the truth about what really happened that night?

Students who liked Black & White will enjoy Rooftop. I highly recommend this book. The characters are gritty and real. The language, while may shock some, is realistic and needed in this book. Overall, this was a great book and one teenage boys will love.

I look forward to Hurricane Song later this year.

In ROOFTOP, Clay, arrested for drug possession, is enrolled in a special program called Daytop. It's for teens on parole. Kids report to the Daytop Center during the day where counselors (recovering drug offenders themselves) run a strict program complete with a philosophy statement, chores and responsibilities, study time for the GED, and a sense of family most of the kids are missing.

At Daytop, Clay runs into a cousin he hasn't seen in awhile. The two are happy to be back together, but there is tension because Addison still lives in the projects and is actively involved in some nasty stuff. Clay's goal is to get free of drugs and make something of himself. His father is his role-model. Clay's dad has been able to beat the odds and build a laundry business from scratch and move his family out of the housing projects to the other side of the street. His dream is to see Clay not only earn his GED, but also go on to college.

Even though Clay's home life is better than Addison's, he is still surrounded by less desirable elements on the streets and in school. He struggles to stay clean and pass his urine/drug tests. Another run-in for smoking pot and he'll be in jail for real.

Running with Addison one night, Clay ends up on a rooftop chasing Clorox, who owes Addison money. Clorox gets away, but when the two cousins try to follow him, they are met by the police. Thinking the cops are really Clorox and his gang, Addison grabs his wallet and fakes that it is a gun. The cops open fire, and Addison is hit by a fatal shot in the chest.

Having a seemingly innocent kid shot by the cops doesn't sit well in the projects. Family and friends are out to get the guilty cop sent to jail. The entire community becomes involved in trying to settle the score.

Volponi draws the reader into the tough lives of his characters. Vivid action and rough language paint a clear picture of life on the inner city streets.

Real Street Life
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-29
The street life for 16-year-old Johnny is a nightmare of crime, sexual exploitation, drugs and violence. It's not a life that he chose, but one that he was jettisoned into when he was forced to run away from an abusive foster parent. The plot thickens when Johnny lands on the cold midnight streets and alleys of Atlanta. Here, Johnny's core belief in his own worth as a human being is tested and he finds a simple goodness in a few runaway friends and in himself. He realizes that he can be more than a bought item that adults use and then dispose of without the slightest regard for him. The writing is gritty, edgy, full of violence and anger, but tempered with an almost poetic undercurrent that lessens the meanness and pain. The characters step from the pages fully developed and so believable that the reader cannot help but recognize these children as once being their neighbors, or maybe even being their own. This book will stay with you a long, long time.

Reading Runaway-A Survivor is like eating a box of assorted candies. Some are sweet, others are sour and at least one is so delicious it tastes like a bite of Heaven. This is not a sweet book, however. It's a bite of ultra-harsh reality. It seems so true-to-life that it must be based on real-life stories. The use of language alone is enough to convice even the most cynical reader that the author has had firsthand experience with the gritty street kids. You can't help but flinch at the outrageous difficulties the protagonist, teenaged Johnny, confronts. In some ways this is an adventure, in another way it is a serious drama, but other times the plot has a light sprinkling of humor. It's hard to categorize this book except to say that it entertained me and shocked me and made me experience emotions I didn't even know I posssessed.

Beautiful poetry, with rich Haitian style artwork. Young readers will love to be read this book, and we can all learn about what a privelege it is to attend school and how hard it is for some children. The story captures the rhythm and excitement of the children running to school early in the morning in Haiti.
Beautiful, readable, enriching.

The illustrations are absolutely stunning; the text is delightful and touching. Haitian children travel long distances in the wee hours of the morning without shoes to simply get to school. What a wake-up call for those of us in the U.S. struggling to get our children dressed and off to school. I bought it for my three-year-old daughter who is half Haitian, but it is a beautiful tale for any child (or adult).

I have no idea how this one fell through the cracks as it should have been one of the all time classics and a best-seller. It's absolutely fantastic, offering insight into a variety of salespeople's rise from various backgrounds and humble beginnings to superstars in many different industries. The individual accounts are easy to read in a short sitting. Each one inspires and motivates through relating real-life struggles and hurdles each superstar faced on the way to the top ... struggles that are strikingly familiar to all salespeople. It's a book to keep in the briefcase and review often as it's wisdom is timeless and encouraging without sensationalism. A must-have.
