I didn't think my 6-year old could sit through, listening to this book, but she was begging for more. Even with only one picture per chapter. The two girls, Mary and Jody, share a special kinship with the colt, Star, and each other. The adult is played by Willie, a gruff but gentle cowhand. You get to experience taking care of Star as a baby colt from weaning him from mama's milk to teaching him manners. The story is very gentle climaxing where Star is rescued after having mistakenly boarded a truckload of calves headed for the veal factory. Wonderful storytelling.

My daughter, who is 9, & a horse-lover, LOVED this series of books! This is the first series of horse books that she can't wait to pick up the next one! I like the fact that JoAnn Dawson teaches about the world of horses & horse care through her stories, & that each book has a glossary of horse terms in the back (for us moms!). I highly recommend her books to anyone with a young person who loves horses!

This book is something that I will refer to time and time again. It is not only for people in their 30's, it is especially useful for people in their 50's and 60's. Ms. Myers writes like she is talking to a friend, which makes understanding her ideas easier.

I found this book so hilarious that I bought 3 of them and will give them to friends as presents. Judy motivates without trying to and you find yourself in a position to ease into a workable workout without losing sleep over it. The good humor throughout - it really does not stop - is a refreshing new leaf in the broad spectrum of fitness books available. Judy never makes you feel that you have to be built like an athlete already and then it is simply a question of making an already perfect body into an even more perfect body. I recommend this book to everyone, including those who already have an abundance of fitness books...

What a gorgeous book this is; well written, with realistic characters and fabulous wit and humour...it's hard to believe this book is so hard to get hold of thesedays, especially when lesser books are so freely available. Publishers, eh? Go figure...
Although set in the days of Prohibition and the Great Depression, when no one had much money, and jobs were very hard to come by (very dark days indeed!) this is nonetheless one of the most joyful and uplifting tales I've ever read, a true case of finding a silver lining even on the darkest of clouds. Quinn is a truly inspiring heroine, and her family and friends are amazing. In spite of the adverse conditions they face in their lives, they all make the best of it, and find their own fun...their sense of humour is never diminished. There's good people and bad in Quinn's neighbourhood, but they love and care for each other, and when someone is in trouble, everyone else helps out. I only wish society was still this neighbourly today! Todays kids and teens really should read this, so they will know just what life was like back in grandma and prandpa's day.
I doubt my review does justice to the utter fabulousness of this book, or the complexities and nuances of its characters, or the utter realism of it's setting, but trust me...if you can find a copy of this book, buy it, you won't regret it! It will open a window to a time long ago, a poignant phase in American history that should never be forgotten, and thanks to this book, hopefully never will be.

In her inimitable style, Jean Thesman pens a book about the trials of life as a teenage girl during Prohibition. She captures the feeling of the era so wondrously that you feel as if you are 15-year old Quinn. Her father, Beau John, is endeared by the whole neighborhood for his easygoing and generous personality. Once a bookkeeper, he is forced to work long hours as a dock laborer in another city, and come home only on weekends. As Quinn learns of the suspicious circumstances surrounding his failure to come home from work one weekend, she learns that nobody's perfect, and that the fine line between good and evil can blur around the edges. In this sterling example of an adolescent's initiation into adulthood, you see that even the most deceptively simple ideas are full of complexities, and that we must be brave enough to face them.

Nora helps her grampa gather sap to make maple syrup. Together, the collect the sap and pour it into big buckets. They pour the big buckets into a tank on a horse drawn sleigh, and the horses haul the tank down to the sugar shack. Nora is concerned that the horses get a maple treat to reward them for their hard work. The book is quite informative and engaging. The story is not at all scary. The book has about 1000 words.

This is one of the best smoothie books I have seen. I use the recipes so often, the pages are getting worn. I'm the type of person who gets bored very easily and the recipes in this book have been a great way to add some novelty to my routine, which usually includes at least one smoothie each day. The smoothie recipes vary from very simple to a little exotic, and I can choose either type depending on my mood. The recipes are all very clearly written, and as an added bonus there's even some humor inserted in most of the descriptions. Between reading the recipes and then enjoying the final product, it really makes my day.
In a hammock, under a shady tree, with a cool smoothie . . .

This book is for all of you who like to get outside on a warm summer afternoon, or watch the sunset at 9pm in early August - yes, it's an outdoor type of book. Get your blender out, try a few recipes and then run (don't walk) out of the house and into the fresh air. Sipping a refreshing rasberry smoothie, or a more exotic pineapple 'tropical' smoothie on a summer day is heaven. There are a lot of smoothie books on the market right now, but - as far as I know - this is the only one with recipes designed expressly for the lazy days of summer. I'm waiting with baited breath for winter smoothies, because, after all, it's just around the corner!

The author has created an endearing character who has real-life concerns of size and self-acceptance. The book is about sunflowers and families, but it is really a tool to help children appreciate their own unique abilities and perspectives. Sunflower Sal is an unpretentious child who loves her family, her life and the large sunflowers she plants yearly. She learns to love her size, as well. By accepting that some things come naturally to her, she gives up her struggle and "thinks big". Her contribution is heart warming, and very like Sal herself.

Sal is a big girl in search of her special talents. She admires her grandmother's quilting abilities and tries to quilt herself, but is dissatisfied with the results. With supportive encouragement from her family, Sal pursues her gift of planting sunflower seeds, and is beautifully rewarded at harvest time. A great book to promote positive self-esteem (especially in girls). Warm, lovely illustrations.

I really liked this book. I usally am pretty low on cash, but ilove to read, and am always asking my rents' to buy me books, but lasttime i asked my mom put her foot down she said she spends almost 200 DOLLARS on books for me every month. and she told me that if i wanted anymore books i would be the one to pay for them. so i won this award for attendance at school ($15), and went shoppin. since it had been like forever since i had bought any books i wanted to get a long but good won, i love reading books that are set up as personal narritoves, and when i saw this i had to get it. I really got into the book, i was afraid if i put it down luc would go to the party without me nd i woulld miss out. the book made me bite my nails, i just kept wishing, if only i had 2 twins and could be in 3 places at once withoput anyone noticing !

This book is all about a teenager's world. Simple situations turn wacky when Sunny and Matt break up b/k of a mysterious tape. Fun 4 any luv aspiring teenage gurl! Sunny and Matt's relationship seemed too perfect, so I really liked Geena and Elias's much better, because it was so funny! (especially when the guys dress up as girls...) A must!
