Wintering Well is a terrific book. The characters are wonderful, and the author does a great job of approaching a very difficult subject-physical disability-in a way that is moving and engaging. It's clear that the author did a lot of historical research, but the research never gets in the way of the writing or the story. It's seamless and reads beautifully. Reading Wintering Well, you feel like you have stepped right into the early 19th century. Highly recommended.

Exciting story of brother & sister!

Will has an accident and loses his leg, but WINTERING WELL is not gross or sad ... it is about how he copes, and how his sister Cassie helps him ... and they both learn that challenges can bring exciting rewards. I couldn't put it down, and I'm older than 13. Really good and exciting and feels real..One of my favorite books now!

an unique and delightful book

This book is excellent-not only are the portraits of our canine fellows top-notch, the writing is insightful, informative, and compassionate-providing a truly unique veiw on the lives of these "working dogs" and the profound impact their services have on all of our lives, whether we are aware of them or not (for example, the mine-detection dogs). And there are the dogs that entertain us as well (circus dogs, broadway stars and 'supermodels'). Dogs are an integral part of American culture, and this book is a wonderful look at them (and us). Packed with pictures, this book is more than your average coffee table book and makes an excellent gift for dog-owners and animal lovers alike. Also a great book to share with children-the facts of these dogs lives are every bit as interesting and compelling as fiction.

A heartfelt look at many of man's best friends and their life's work. Pictures are all black and white and give insight into these pooches lives. Stories are vivid and entertaining. Great for the coffee table or a gift for the dog lover in your family.

This Book is GREAT! It is loaded with dogs. Chock full. I like to browse a book and this one takes hours just for the first pass. Not only are the pictures endearing, subtle, and insightful, but the text is a pure treat. I have literally laughed out loud (Sparky the guard dog) - been moved almost to tears (Nadia the seizure alert dog) - and have been simply awestruck (William Wegmen's Batty the super model). I have learned things about dogs that I absolutely did not know before.

Dog lover or not - this book is a must!

This book has alot of wonderful, tasty, and easy recipes. It has a wide variety of tastes, from not so spicy to very spicy. It has made my life alot easier to come home from work and know that, in most cases, within an hour or so I can have dinner on the table with a minimum of mess.

Great ideas for fast, hearty and wholesome meals.

I was surprised to learn how many interesting dishes could be prepared in one single pot. The preparation and cooking tips were very useful, too.

This is my favorite cookbook. Most of the recipes have foods from the entire food pyramid so that I don't have to cook separate recipes for a vegetable, grain, or meat for dinner. I also like that the recipes are very interesting - there are Asian, Indian, Italian, Mediterranean, etc. which really give my family a variety in meals and fun to cook also. I would not call this a lowfat cookbook, but there are quite a few recipes that are lowfat and several that you can substitute for low fat.

A True Testament To A Path Towards Success

When I spotted the book on the shelve many years ago I blinked 3 times because I couldn't believe it was the same guy who I grew up with in Brighton Beach.

Well written and when I contacted him, he responded. Apparently never forgot his roots.

I write this almost 17 years after reading the book and mentioning the above, because after going through a pile of books to sell or donate, I realize this is one I'll cherish and hold on to.

Do not know what the author is doing today but sure he's living a fine productive life.

I read this book when it first came out after seeing the author on a talk show years ago. Since then, I have bought many copies and given them to young people who needed just what the book offers, which is a highly motivational, true life account of someone who, against all odds, became highly successful. I purchase copies for students in the school where I work. I'm purchasing another copy today. I only wish I knew how to contact the author so I could implore him to come personally to our school for a visit. What a difference he could make!

Every youth in America should have this book!!!

Reading this book will inspire every child to get a quality education, and to never let any obstacles get in his or her way. Drew is a relative of mine and he is a person who would tell the American youth exactly how it is out in the world and that even though the road will be tough to keep on going! This book is very inspiring.

A great counting book!!
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-22
As a Kindergarten teacher, this book is one of the BEST for practicing counting with pre-schoolers and Kindergarteners. It has large pictures and numbers making it easier for little readers to find and count each object, much less frustrating than the I Spy or Where's Wally seach and find books. This makes a wonderful book for parents and children to share. When I found it in our school library, I ordered this one and others for my classroom. We've all found it lots of fun. Enjoy!

Great details!

Review Date: 2001-02-27
This book is full of fantastic little details -kids can spend hours searching for items in each scene, much like 'Where in the World is Wally', but with loads more to find. Many of the scenes have been very well researched, such as the villages in West Africa and Alaska. And at the end of the book, there are some souvenirs and travel photos that send the reader back to find things they didn't notice in the first reading! Endless fun.

Any of the 1001 things to spot books are wonderful! My twins girls have several of them and they can sit for the longest time playing with these books. They help with identifying objects, counting, color recognition, patience etc. I highly recommend them and we give them to their friends at Chirstmas and birthday parties. I haven't found them in any bookstores, I've only found then online. Moms, get your kids one of these books, you won't be sorry!!

Excellent low-fat baking ideas; delicious cakes!!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1999-04-30
I have to say this is truly my favorite cookbook for baking! I purchased it in 1996 and am still using it to this day in 1999. The recipes and techniques allow you to make fat-free cakes/baked goods that taste as if they have tons of fat in them, simply with the use of fruit purees (mostly prune puree and prune baby food as well as pear baby food) I know it sounds unusual, but it works! I truly hope that the author (Donna Rodnitzky) will write further books on fat-free baking. I'll be the first in line to buy them.

Includes a new approach to lowering fat content.

This cookbook offers an unusual approach towards lowering fat content in baked goods, by using pureed fruits instead of fattening butter or shortening. I was originally skeptical, but after trying a few recipes, found little difference in flavor or quality from standard butter/shortening based recipes. Overall excellent, surprise your guests!

I love love love this book! It has a car theme that my little guy loved, the pictures are soft and very detailed.the book tells a story in pictures of a little boy his mom and dog in a little red car out driving. Each page gives a letter of the alphabet and a drawing like a is ambulance. but the book can be read many ways, at first it is a great picture book with lots to look at, you can also have the child find the item in the picture(or the boy in the red car), for instance on one page there are multiple police cars a child can find, or motorcyles, when they get older you can reinforce letter recognition and letter sounds. at the end of the story the boy and his mom go home to daddy and a baby. buy this book, you will be able to read it differently for years!

My two-year old loves this book! Though not identified as such, this book features a family on a drive through San Francisco. It features many different modes of transportation including garbage trucks, limousines, buses, and more. Readers can identify landmarks such as the Transamerica Pyramid, Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown, and many more. Easy to read over and over and over...
