This is a great book about seasons in Vermont. It is great for my grandson who loves trucks and construction equipment. This book about helping others has a pickup truck, a dump truck and a backhoe that is sure to please any young child.

My 3-year-old loved this book. He is very verbal for his age, and loves cars and trucks and machines. He thought Darrell's adventures were very exciting and loved his machines. I enjoyed this book more than most "machine" books because of the nice story of community service and the beautiful illustrations.

A Gem of a Picture Book

So many contemporary picture books fail to tell a story and rely instead on the pictures. This book balances beautifully the saga of the activities of Darrell, a handyman in a northern rural community, with well-executed woodcuts that show him, his environment, and his neighbors. From the title page, with a spectacular back hoe, to the final spread, the book affirms the life of a caring individual and the ways in which people depend on each other. Ideal for the classroom, for home schools, or for individual reading -- with particular interest to parents desperate for books about machinery. If you love Vermont, you'll definitely want to add this tribute to the Vermont way of life to your personal collection.

4 1/2 Good Trucks Make Good Neighbors

Review Date: 2007-05-03
Some kids will think that "Darrell" refers to the hard-working truck In Leda Schubert's tribute to people and seasons of Vermont. While it's true that the real "Darrell" is the craggy faced construction worker/handyman/good neighbor who drives the old pickup, truck-loving kids can enjoy plenty of four-wheeled action. ALong with the pickup (which is red in one scene, and blue in all the others--where's the continuity?) Darrell's uses a big yellow backhoe to move dirt, make a swimming hole, and scoop up Buster, the family dog who chases a ball right into the big hole.

Schubert's sentences are economical yet imaginative: The backhoe is a large machine, but Darrell is an artist. If a hammer drops on the ground, he can pick it up as if he's using tweezers." The evocative writing allows us to imagine ourselves in Darell's big snowboots, rising at 4 am with Buster, and clearing 21 snow-covered driveways by 7 am. As he does so, "porch lights flash in thanks, and he blink his headlights back. HIs stomach growls as he glimpses a neighbor making breakfast.

SOme might call this book old-fashioned, even sentimental, and that's exactly why they might like it. Thematically, the book touches on being a good neighbor, the necessity of cooperation in harsh climates, and the gladly-given reciprocity that attends a good man doing a good job. (Women largely take a backseat here, they're shown making food and washing clothes, although they also help the men get the truck out of the pud ("the dirt roads are like chocolate pudding." During a storm, Darrell is so busy fixing the neighbors wind-shaken houses that he doesn't have time to heed his wife's warning about their own collapsing barn roof. In time-honored tradition, all the neighbors that Darrell helped come over for a "roof raising," and the crew all gets a hot supper of stew and pie.

Aside from the backhoe and a digital alarm clock, the pictures and story could have taken place anytime in at least the last 50 or 60 years. While this nebulous setting may unsettle some youngsters, it can also be adapted to many time periods. Mary Azarian's illustrations look like old woodcuts. Wait--they are woodcuts! Lined faces and wind-tossed jair are handsomely unglamorous, clothing and the Vermont countryside are authentic (the book covers four seasons, with a beautiful picture of vibrant autumn trees. THe only season that doesn't really get its due is Spring, but Ms. Schubert captures the hopeful feelings of the season (unless you're a T.S. Eliot fan) when Darrell tells a family unable to pay him that they can just do it later.

Without preaching, moralizing, or self-congratulation, the book shows both the necessity and the intrinsic and extrinsic rewards of doing work that serves others. ALthough there are some moments of excitement (those trucks!), it's mostly a quiet work, good for classroom reading and units on weather, as well as toddlers and young grade schoolers home snuggle time.

If you've been leery about going on the Net, read this book to set your mind at ease. But if you've already been blithely surfing among cookies and spam, this book will scare the pants off you. The section on Internet privacy at work (e-mail and web surfing) changed my behavior overnight. So did the sections on how to protect children: I'm a grandmother and I'm making sure my daughter reads this book.

This book starts the job in outlining Internet privacy issues, but 'Life and Death on the Internet' by Keith A Schroeder finishes the job. I think both books go hand-in-hand. This book outlines the issues clearly and 'Life and Death on the Internet' gives several step-by-step outlines to put privacy into effect. Both books are probably the two best Internet books of the year!

An excellent book for those using the Net

The only secret in this book is how the system works on paper instead of verbally from meetings. There are no revolutionary or radical concepts here, just plain sense and common knowledge.
Sometimes it is helpful just to have what you already know about a subject restated to get a different view. The information in this book is collected and organized in a way that you can use it. There are no radical diets and the use of exercise is just as important as diet.... There are a few Appendixes and some menus.

This is a good book or should I say manual on the regimen. A few acquaintances were on it and it does work. As every other diet plan ever conceived you have to follow it to get results. That's the bottom line. This is one of the more effective regimens that I am familiar with and it does work. There are no frills, just proven basics here.

A weight reduction plan--not another diet.

This is another one of the American Girls series about Josefina Montoya, a nine-year-old girl (almost ten!) living in the New Mexico of 1824. When a flashflood brings disaster to her father's rancho, Josefina's aunt Dolores suggests that they begin weaving blankets that they can trade. Josefina throws herself into the work, eager to help the family, but one of her sisters is holding back, and Josefina needs to find out why.

The final chapter of this wonderful book is a highly informative look at schooling in New Mexico in 1824. Jean-Paul Tibbles' illustrations are nothing short of excellent, and add so much to this wonderful story.

This is another of the excellent stories that American Girls presents. This one also has a fine lesson, while the story is highly entertaining. Also, I do enjoy the way the author has realistically woven Josefina's religion into her daily life; religion is something lacking in most American Girls stories. My eleven-year-old daughter and I read this book together; we both enjoyed it, and we both recommend it to you.

You can read it over and over and its interesting every time

I like that there is a glossary of Spanish words at the end of the book, because I know that if I ever go to Mexico, I will know how to say thank-you and stuff like that (gracias). The idea of a maid teaching Josephina and Josephina being so eager to learn makes me stunned. I think that you will very much enjoy the pictures, as I did. I did not recognize the dyes that the girls used to dye the wool, but from the pictures I understood that they were very beautiful. (Carmelle, Age 8)

Nine year old Josefina Montoya is growing up on a rancho in New Mexico in 1824. When Josefina's Tia Dolores comes to visit to Montoyas, Josefina learns about a world beyond the rancho-a world of elegance. But Josefina and her sisters begin to worry that Tia Dolores will replace Mama, who died last year. And then disaster strikes. The Montoyas lose most of their sheep in a terrible flood. Tia Dolores comes to the rescue with the suggestion that the Montoyas weave blankets to sell so that they can get new sheep. But more and more, Josefina and her sisters begin to believe that all the new ideas their aunt has brought will make them forget all that Mama taught them. Then, Tia Dolores begins to teach the girls to read and write. Mama couldn't read and write, and Josefina and her sisters aren't sure she'd approve. More and more, Josefina must face many changes-both good and bad.

In "Jungle King Secrets, A Libido - Liberating Lifestyle For Superior Sexual Satisfaction" by Paul Adcock the reader will find a different way to look at the causes and solutions for Male Impotence. So often in our culture today the blame for any dysfunction in sexuality is often placed on the individual and the medical community has little to offer and often only serves to hinder the sufferer. This book chapter by chapter lays out the causes of Impotence from environmental, physical, stress, and dietary. It explains what men can do to retain or even regain their sexual prowess. As a woman reader I found this book to be educational and informative. I felt that the author spent a great deal of time doing research and included a rather comprehensive list of endnotes as one of the appendices. The information was thorough and complete. The writing style at times seemed a bit preachy but the subject matter seemed to warrant it. Many of the problems that are confronting all of us are because we have been indoctrinated by a corporate system to not think for ourselves. It is, I feel necessary for us to be preached at a bit to sit up and listen to information that we might not otherwise hear.
Following the advice that has been thoroughly laid out in this book will not only assist men in their desire to maintain their Jungle King status it will improve their overall health and lifestyle. Women as will would be served by reading this book. It teaches good health and lifestyle principles and it also will teach women more about the men they love. I recommend it.

WOW is the first word that comes to mind when I think about Paul Adcock's "Jungle King Secrets." Do not dismiss this book as something for sex-crazed people. Even if you have no interest in improving your sex life, you will find this book fascinating and full of information to improve your health and raise your energy. The book is primarily geared toward the male reader, but women will find many helpful suggestions as well.

Paul Adcock wants a better sex life for himself and for you and me. But what he also wants that makes this book so effective is for us to be healthy, for us to enjoy our bodies the way nature intended. A better sex life does not come from using Viagra or watching pornography as the media would have us believe. A better sex life comes from increasing our energy by exercising properly, eating nutritious foods, and being responsible for one's own thoughts and desires rather than letting advertisements tell us what we need.

"Jungle King Secrets" is impressive for multiple reasons. Its strongest asset is Adcock's extensive research on nutrition, food supplements, and the current food and drug industry. Most of what we currently eat, the drugs we put in our bodies, the processed food, the alcohol, cigarettes, medications, all have harmful effects on our sex lives, causing "chemical castration," shrunken genitals, low sperm counts, and erectile dysfunction. Viagra is not the answer. Nor are some of the ridiculous and dangerous products on the market such as pumps that claim to increase penis size. Adcock exposes the poisonous aspects of all these products, and then through extensive research, he details numerous nutritional supplements and foods that are far more effective and health-friendly. Adcock has personally experimented with all these products--and the list is amazing. It includes everything from bee pollen to sexual spices, ways for men to increase testosterone and to decrease estrogen. He also provides penile exercises and massages to increase one's erection stamina. While you may not be ready to run out and buy all the ingredients to make Paul Adcock's erotic elixir superfoods such as Jungle Juice or Bliss Balls, you may find one supplement to start with. Most importantly, you will come to a better understanding of how seriously our health and food has been compromised by our industrial environment and by government agencies intended to protect us such as the FDA.

After reading "Jungle King Secrets," I found myself no longer blindly wanting to eat processed food but paying attention to what I eat. I have also learned to question the medical establishment. Adcock reveals the fallacies of our industrial-medical complex, which wants to medicate your problem rather than fix the root cause of it. I have experienced this situation myself where doctors are more willing to give me pills to treat symptoms than talk to me about my diet and how I can help my own health issues naturally. The medical establishment has much to lose--billions of dollars--by letting the American public be healthy. The Federal Food and Drug Administration, as Adcock states, is even involved to the point where they are considering making juices be prescribed medications. If we allow the government to continue down this road, they will own and control our bodies--this may seem like a paranoid exaggeration, but already our public schools advocate putting our children on ritalin, the FDA has approved all kinds of preservative ingredients in food that cause numerous health problems, and our cities have put fluoride into our drinking water. Fluoride can case serious problems by its ingestion, but because the American Dental Association and city governments fear being sued, this decision and many similar ones fail to be reversed. Shouldn't we have a choice what is in our drinking water?

Adcock rationally discusses sexual methods and the danger of pornography and excessive sex. He is a firm believer in the Taoist understanding of sex as part of the energy life force, and he advocates longer, more loving and meaningful sex rather than sexual practices focused on bringing people to an energy-draining climax. Ultimately, sexual energy can be harnessed, not just for recreation and procreation, but to create physical rejuvenation and psycho-spiritual illumination. Added bonuses to "Jungle King Secrets" are dozens of wonderful cartoons that carry the messages home to the reader. Also included are over forty pages of sources, both websites and print publications, for further reading, and a sixteen-page glossary.

"Jungle King Secrets" made me reevaluate my own lifestyle and diet, and I am convinced any reader will do the same. Whether you want a fantastic sex life, or you just want to feel better, "Jungle King Secrets" can satisfy your desires. I was not able to find much information on the author except the fact that he was born in Detroit, Michigan and now resides in a suburb of the same. "Jungle King Secrets" happens to be his first book but I am sure it will not be his last.

Does size matter? Find out in Paul Adcock's book "Jungle King Secrets"--his detailed study of this and many more life-enhancing questions are answered in this 251-page volume. His main thrust is on how to improve your love life through the use of diet and exercise. He speaks of "World Class Wellness" and shows how to handle that ever-growing concern among men, "the erection." Mr. Adcock describes how nutrition of the body relates to our sexual prowess in, "Factory-Farming and Sexual Function." He instructs the reader in the proper use of nutrition and even better, what not to eat or do for sexual superiority; which food and drinks to avoid and others to eat more of. Not smoking was at the top of the list along with overindulgence. Paul cautions everyone on the dangers of smoking and emphasizes the fact that too much wine can hinder a man's performance. I could sympathize with what he means here and I am sure I'm not alone when I say, "it doesn't help a man's partner to overindulge either."

Further on, Paul explains the dangers of sexual pharmaceuticals. The risks involved in taking so-called, erection-amplifying drugs or aphrodisiacs. Such libido enhancers have hidden chemicals that are detrimental to the human body and Mr. Adcock cautions the reader on their use and abuse. One of my personal favorite chapters was, "The Secret of the Sexual Super Heroes." Mr. Adcock refers to the "Grand Master Tu Jin-Sheng" and the teachings of "Taoism." "Taoism" is not a political doctrine but rather a wisdom tradition. Followers observed the organic lifestyle and learned to harness the life force of creation called "energy cultivation (Qi Gong)." They learned that this practice made it possible for them to be more sexually superior and less susceptible to sickness and disease.

The power of sex is exemplified in this very well-documented and researched book. How Mr. Adcock was able to compile so much helpful information into only 251 pages is amazing. I had no problem giving this book an A rating. The research was thorough and well documented, the writing was unquestionably well done and "Jungle King Secrets" is a quality product that is well worth reading.

Very informative - highly recommended!

In the beginning of the book, it states "The author wrote this book with the reader's best interest in mind." And that it is. Not knowing what this book is really about I was pleasantly surprised and, at the same time, found it extremely informative. Adcock presents a to-the-point and thorough explanation of the causes of impotency and how to prevent it. At the same time he creates a pleasurable experience.

There are many concepts in the book I have never heard of. For example, research show that one ejaculation consists of nutritional loss equivalent to "two pieces of New York steak, 10 eggs, six oranges, two lemons, and an enormous amount of energy." Adcock further explains that if there aren't enough nutrients in the body, it drains organs, glands, and muscles in order to replace the lost nutrients. He encourages healthy eating as well as adding supplements to the diet.

Adcock, through thorough research, has found that foods such as seeds and nuts are considered to be super-foods and could protect prostate enlargement due to trapping DHT. He further explains how "sexual spices" work, such as ginger that is considered to be an aphrodisiac and cayenne pepper which acts as a sexual stimulant by increasing genital blood flow. He also explains that a supplement such as arginine is often referred to as "nature's Viagra" because it converts into an erectile neurotransmitter nitric oxide. Adcock also explains other supplements that enhance health, therefore enhancing sexual pleasure. These include such things as CoQ10, garlic, bioflavonoids, vitamins C, D, and E, and so on. I don't think he missed any. For each supplement he includes a brief explanation of the properties and why there are essential to a man's health.

"Jungle King Secrets" is full of information, most of it I wasn't aware of. Knowing an unhealthy environment could cause sexual issues, I never considered that industrial chemicals such as pesticides, plastics, sodium lauryl sulfates, parabens and even synthetic colors can be detrimental to my sexual performance. Checking my own cabinet I found the shampoo I was using had sodium laural sulfates in it and according to Adcock this is a cheap way of creating suds. I also noticed paraben in the skin lotion I use.

This is definitely a lap and snuggle book. It's not heavy, but BIG with warm tones and autumn colors settled on the pages. The illustrator, Marni Backer, captured snowy winter scenes that immediately draw you into any large city and any large neighborhood. Could this neighborhood by yours? With each turn of the page, the traffic muffles and city bustle blurs so that you can now be introduced to Lizzie and Ben's dilemma of seeing a homeless woman, Dorrie, and the children wanting to help despite their mother's caution about talking to strangers.

Told with the realism of a child, you'll see how Lizzie and Ben leave Dorrie peanut butter and crackers--but forget to give her a dinner knife. (They did much better when they brought her some warm vegetable noodle soup.)

When their mother takes notice of the parade of missing food items, she begins to become involved. She helps us to find out why Dorrie is homeless and the whole family spends a Saturday volunteering at a soup kitchen.I won't spoil the ending, but rest assured that there is a message of hope for Dorrie.

One of the nicest features about the book is the note from the author on the last page. Written at a level that young children can understand, she explains her idea for the book, where she has volunteered in an effort to help the homeless, and where to start if you want to find out more about homelessness.

I don't know if Larry Townsend ever had an inkling of just how influential his 1972 original "The Leatherman's Handbook" would become. I am certain he probably had no idea that - within a decade - the mantra of Gay Liberation would become fogged over by the onset of the plague of AIDS and the total indifference of the Reagan Administration. Leathermen, with their work hard play harder sexual ethic, were hit especially hard.

So ten years later, Larry took the results of surveys he'd taken with thousands of men, edited the language a bit (the original was written with a lot of seventies lingo) and made the important additions to reflect the changing health concerns. While still a revelatory book, it is also a more sober one. Back in the seventies, it was still a very risky proposition to attempt a gay publication of any sort. In the AIDS prejudiced panic of the 80's, it was still a considerable risk.

Larry Townsend's "The Leatherman's Handbook II," like its 1972 original, still spells out the codes of conduct that the underground Leather Scene and S&M men lived by and the numerous accounts of steamy real life kink encounters remained, though now with addendums about safety and health issues.

Even now, with a much wider variety of books available on how to and relationship studies, not to mention my own writings, it is hard to remember a time when Larry's book was such a shocking event. Voluntary servitude and fetishistic behaviors are given a great deal of coverage here, and the amazing thing is just how much most of Larry's original foundations remain relevant. Even more to the point is just how much the format of both editions of "The Leatherman's Handbook" became the blueprint for so much of our community's guidebooks; A little journalistic information followed up with some hot episodes.

Still, "The Leatherman's Handbook" one and two remain viable sources of both etiquette and education in addition to its historical value. Larry's work here is quite possibly one of the most important pair of books about the side of Gay Life that many would like to ignore, but it's with us and vibrant and exciting for those who have taken this intimate discovery. Like mine; a man who stumbled across a $5.95 edition of "The Leatherman's Handbook II" in a Delaware bookstore in 1989 and still has the dog-eared paperback on his bookshelf all these years later. It changed my life like gravity.

An excellent "how to" manual for the sexually dominant man. Gay or straight, it makes no difference, the attitude and techniques described in this book cut to the essence of what makes sex worthwhile: power and control. Clearly written, with lengthy sexual anecdotes, it is as sexually charged a book as was ever written.

An S&M book from one of the best in the field

For anyone who is interested in either entering the aura of leathersex or who is all ready involved, Leatherman's Handbook II is a must read. Written by Larry Townsend who is well respected within the leather world and also a contributor to the male bondage magazine, Bound and Gagged, this book follows along with his style. This is an easy book to read and understand with chapters dealing with anything from bondage techniques, bondage material, s&m techniques, meeting a partner and much more. Each chapter generally has a story that is relevant to the chapter's subject matter.

All though the book is more gay oriented much that is said can be applied to any situation. The picking of a partner is very important and Townsend goes into detail on this issue. Townsend also touches upon the use of drugs as well as other issues.

I enjoyed reading the book and found that its material was well written and worthy as a strong reference manual for what it discusses.

This book is certainly worth the high rating of "10".

Joseph Bean does an outstanding job of explaining, demystifying and clarifying many aspects of BDSM. It is from a gay male perspective and would probably not be of tremendous interest to hets or lesbians, but gay & bi/pansexual bio- & transmen should thoroughly enjoy Bean's work, no matter what their level of involvement in BDSM. He covers a wide variety of topics ranging from leather to bondage, BDSM relationships to finding partners, play parties to tools, etc. Plus Bean focuses on the importanct of the safe, sane & consensual principles. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

This should be part of your Core Library holdings in BDSM

This is a "foundation book." A "must read." Joseph, one of the select few who have shaped the Leather culture in this country, wrote this timeless book in part so that those not (yet) involved in the Leather culture could develop a better understanding of what it is and how it works. But it is also intended for those of us who have some years of experience, here. For this book batches and sorts in ways that help us better to uderstand others with slightly different kinks. His chapter organizations are inspired and his writing style is easy to follow. As I've said: a "must read."

Words for thought in the novice or experienced mind.

It can be difficult to balance between talking down to those who will feel they have a lot of experience in BDSM and tallking over those who are just learning about BDSM. This book does a good job of looking at a wide range of activities and interests, some of them for the first time, so that newbies can feel grounded while advanced kinky folk can mull over the concepts. Even though the book grew out of Bean's own journey toward becoming a master, I think the book can speak to anyone regardless of vanilla sexual orientation. However the book often reads more like it is geared toward the bottom or submissive partner in a relationship.

My #1 recommendation for a gay male leather audience

This was a rich delight to read. Many leatherfolk and leather-curious will appreciate the content, accurately described by the chapter titles: "Getting Started in Leathersex", "Playing with Power and Sex", "Playing with Pain", "Playing with Pleasure", "Playing with Life and Death", "Leather Relationships", "Anatomy, Physiology, and First Aid" and "Leathersex and Spirituality".

The author's writing style is both engaging and informative. "Leather Relationships" has an intimate quality to it, including an interesting interview with the founders of Masters & slaves Together ("MAsT"), and another with the author's late boy. The latter interview and writings around it answer, as best I've seen, the question "What is a 'boy'?" "Playing with Pain" included information on some techniques for pain processing and storage that I'd not run across in book form before. "Leathersex and Spirituality" is a short but welcome chapter.

The book flows well. The author does not shirk from addressing edgy topics when relevant. The index is exhaustive.

I particularly recommend "Leathersex" to a gay male leather audience.

I origionally picked this book up from a library as a teen ager and later bought it. I find thoughtout my-life I refer to the corresponding chapter for some slightly conservative advice.

The book contains letters from a fairly successful businessman to his son. They start with school and continue with such topics as school, leadership, enterpreneurship, marriage ... etc. Would make a great gift..

VERY INSPIRING

I read it twice when I was young. I would have been too young to judge it on grammar or any deep meaning but I can tell you the book has sat in the back of my mind all of these years. I have refered it to many people and given it as gifts to people I respect... Thanks Kingsley!

Insight into Business and Life, But Where's the Son's Reply?
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-03
This brief, encouraging book consists of a series of letters (edited for print) written by a successful businessman (Ward himself) to his son, tracking the son's career from a decision on which college to attend to the son's mid-career promotion to company president upon his father's retirement. During the 20-year span, the father shares with his son (and the reader) all of his wisdom on topics from business--work ethic, entrepreneurship, partnership, business expansion, diversification, teamwork, firing an employee, leadership, etc.; as well as life--challenge, success, integrity, marriage, money, manners, happiness, friendship, criticism, balance, etc.

Ward's advice is "business conservative," with his basic message being: Set goals for yourself, work hard, be honest and block off time to enjoy your life a little. The selected decision points, problems and events in the son's life revolve around people, mainly working relationships with business associates, employees, customers, suppliers, bankers and competitors--all without neglecting family and friends. Ward emphasizes the importance of cultivating friendships, stating how "Without doubt, friendship is the spice of life." However, when he opines how a person with more than three good friends should feel blessed, and how being rich is better than being poor, but also lonelier, he exhibits his realism and unveils a hint of quiet, unspoken regret: Do we all in our drive to achieve emphasize business and profit at the expense of humanity and friendship perhaps a little more than we should?

I recommend this book to anyone involved in business of any sort, and especially to all students considering a business career. However, I also note a caveat: Without the replies of the son, the book has the overall tone of unilateral lecturing rather than fair, two-way dialog. In a related manner, I comment on the father's favorite short book, "A Message to Garcia," which he includes in the text: Yes, work as hard, competently and expediently as the courageous messenger did in President McKinley's Cuban emergency, but, as importantly, in your business career please do not march forward on your boss's orders without first fully understanding the impact of your actions (i.e., think!) and respectfully raising any concerns you may have (i.e., speak up!).

I bought this for my grandchildren and read it for myself! It is well written and tells a story a child can understand. It answers all the questions that young children tend to ask about pigs, living on a farm, etc. Love it and can hardly wait to give it to my grandaughters!

I was born and raised in a rural area but my grandchildren live in a suburban area. I was glad to find a book which gives them such a good explanation of how pigs are raised, and how time-consuming the work is.

This is the first in a wonderful series of books by Judy Wolfman and David Lorenz Winston, giving an educational and entertaining documentation of farm life. Perfect for the elementary school child. The descriptions are accurate, scientific and mature, but in clear language that children can readily understand. The photos tie in perfectly with the text, and together present the full story of the life cycle of the animal, and show the love and care given by the children who live on the farm. My seven year old grandson thoroughly enjoys these books, and has taken them to school to share with his teacher and classmates.
