This book is very helpful in forming a coherent, persuasive and meaningful application statement. Michael Mason was my senior AP English teacher, and speaking with him in person is even more beneficial! If possible take one of his writing workshops, he is one of the most inspirational people I have ever met. If you can't find a workshop to take, at least pick up the book!

This book has greatly helped me out. I mean, this is simply the best book for people who have questions regarding personal statements. The techniques, the attention grabbers, the rules, and the humanity shockers all those are shockingly persuasive, and it difinitely improves my chances of getting into UCLA. Thancks Mason.

Of the many books on college that I've brought home for my offspring to look at, _How to Write a Winning College Application Essay_ is the first that my daughter read.

The book is well organized and has interesting topics. My favorite was the chapter of essays gone wrong, and the intelligent discussion of what went wrong with them. My daughter spent hours on the writing exercises--though she hates her writing about herself--and I think they helped her. The tone of this book is helpful, not the least bit condescending, as it points out errors of content, style and tone that can hurt the applicant's chances.

This best part of this book is that it has a large section (50+ pages) on how to gather the raw material on your life that can help you find the material for your essay. If you have no idea who your hero is or what adversity you've overcome, this will help you find your story and the supporting antecdotes that make your essay stand out. Mason also gives very specific instructions on how to write a good essay. This would be a good book for someone who wants some guidance turning ideas into a workable essay. It also has short chapters in writing essays for the SAT II English test, graduate school admissions and scholarship essays.

I grew up a voracious reader and somehow, I missed this gem of a book! We checked it out from the library and now must have it. Sandburg's writing is reminiscent of Dr. Suess in novel word usage and syntax and the story telling reminds me of NPR's A Prairie Home Companion. A great tall tale that enthralled my 6 year old twins and 4 year old and that I enjoyed reading WAY too much! Add to your collection!

When my mom read this book to my sister and me, it had already entertained young readers for about 50 years. How lucky were we that this story had been preserved for the purpose of delighting us to the very core of our young beings? The idea of a popcorn farm catching fire was thoroughly thought provoking for an already thought-filled pre-schooler.

When I recently purchased it for my own little girls, I must admit that I suffered a major disappointment. You see, the Huckabuck family has a pony faced daughter named, "Pony Pony Huckabuck." Unbeknownst to me (and in my honor) every single time that my mom read this book, that daughter became "Joanie Joanie Huckabuck." Now, I can't decide if I should be upset that Sandburg didn't really name one of his main characters for me, or that my mom re-named the "PONY FACED" child after me.

In any case, I highly recommend this book to any parent who would like to share a very interesting story, told with interesting language, with their children.

Carl Sandburg's Huckabuck Family will delight and charm children of every age with a story of family pride and optimism. When the Huckabucks Nebraska barn burns down and all their popcorn pops, they decide to go on the road and wait for a sign to tell them when to come back home. Each year they move to a new town and Papa finds a new job. The Huckabucks may have good luck, or bad, but they always have each other. David Small's illustrations add just the right touch to the story and are so detailed that even the farm animals have facial expressions. So, sit down and take a trip across the country and back with the Huckabucks. I promise, you won't be disappointed. This is a wonderful book the whole family can share.

Small's whimsical pictures are perfectly suited to Sandburg

This book is a satisfying follow-up to David Small's last twobooks, The Gardener & The Library. Though this is an old story its optimistic message suits Small's whimsical style beautifully. I'm thoroughly confused by the review in Kirkus that criticizes the repetitive nature of the names--this is part of Sandburg's poetic form--as well as the "pointless" nature of the Huckabuck family's travels, which is actually the whole point of the story. One must take a change in luck in stride, go out and find one's new fortune, and you may even find yourself back home having learned a thing or two. Cheers (& 5 stars) to the Huckabucks, Sandburg, and David Small.

A young girl relays to her father her dream of being a cowgirl in the Wild West rather than a good girl, a nice girl, or a school girl who reads or plays nicely indoors. Whimsical watercolor and ink illustrations bring the rhyming text to life by turning a shaggy rug into a pair of chaps, Daddy's fedora into a cowboy hat and a stray dog into a piebald mare. Lazy clouds drift in and out of shapes - cattle, cowboy hats, cacti and covered wagons - to illustrate the girl's imagination. The city-country contrast is deftly played out in subtle details like skyscrapers shaped like cacti and a junk heap that takes the form of a heard of cattle. An excellent read for imaginative children, especially girls, everywhere. Ages 4-8.

Under a city sky scuttled with cactus shaped clouds a dissatisfied little miss stoutly declares that she doesn't want to be a good girl, but a cowgirl instead. Surrounded by books and needlework in her 20th floor apartment she observes that good girls have absolutely no fun, and she does this in lilting rhyme: "I don't want to be a girly girl, Who likes to sit and chat. I just want to be a cowgirl, Daddy, What's so wrong with that?"

Vested and hatted Daddy thinks this is a really absurd ambition. Nonetheless, off his little daughter goes to Texas, to the wild, wild west. As it turns out, she doesn't go alone.

Tony Ross's inimitable boldly colored illustrations add another dimension of fun to this lively tale of a little girl's dream.

As our young narrator tells us in no uncertain terms, she's not interested in being a good girl, or a girly girl, sitting around with friends chatting, having tea parties, and playing with dolls. That's not her idea of fun. She definitely doesn't want to have her head in a book, or cook, clean, and sew. And as for high-rise living in the big city, well this young lady yearns to live on the prairie, breaking broncos, driving cattle, twirling her lasso, and sleeping under the stars. And that's just what she plans to do. "I've got my shiny spurs and boots,/I've got my cowgirl hat-/I'm leaving for the Wild, Wild West./Now what's so wrong with that?" Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross have authored an imaginative and humorous ode to the wild, wild west, with a very satisfying, feel-good ending, that's sure to become a read aloud favorite at your house. Ms Willis' rhyming text is entertaining and engaging, and begs to be read with a lilting western drawl. Mr Ross' charming and creative, cartoon-like artwork is rich in expressive, wild west images, and sharp eyed readers will enjoy poring over the illustrations and finding all the special and amusing details in each picture. Perfect for youngsters 3-7, I Want To Be A Cowgirl is a rootin' tootin' good time for little cowpokes with big dreams of their own.

Molly's mother is getting married again, and she is dreading having a new potential father. She's even less thrilled to be joining the newly weds on their honeymoon.

Charlie was looking forward to his summer riding his bike in the mountains of Colorado discovering new trails to conquer. However, his two mothers have a different summer planned for the family and it's nowhere near the snowy peaks.

Little do they know Molly and Charlie are in for the most memorable summer of their lives. Molly's family will be heading to Colorado and Charlie's family will be heading to L.A. it's a house swap!

Getting to know the other person by staying in each others rooms is one thing, but these two end up finding out more about themselves in someone else's room.

Let me just start out saying that I loved this book! It was fun, it was fast, it was cute! I'm a sucker for a good love story, what can I say?! Yes, it was a love story, but it wasn't an over the top too cheesy even for me love story. It was balanced and possibly even believable. So, don't let that turn you away!

We have Molly the fashion guru, timid, pretty, afraid to get her heart broken. Then there's Charlie, the mountain bike maniac, genuine, hot, 100% guy. I don't know if you could get much different, but somehow it works.

I love the fact that they literally fall in love with each other's personalities, I mean it's like match.com, but without the stupid questionnaire and compatibility test. Not that I've ever been to match.com, or even know that they have a questionnaire. I mean you've seen the commercials too, right? Anyway, it's like they bring out the best in each other and they do it from thousands of miles away. Sucker for the romantics, I know!

Still, Charlie isn't like some made up version of a guy from a Nicholas Sparks novel, he is flawed and the poor guy he screws up. I can't say that I really blame him though, but that's beside the point. The point is their relationship works, because they have this crazy thing that they do called communication! It also helps that they are actually attracted to each other too, I mean you do have to have some level of attraction, I don't care what you say!

I can't really pinpoint one thing that made me like the story so much, I think maybe it was a combination of the characters and just the whole premise of the novel itself, but I just picked it up and I just had to know.... are these two ever going to get together!

And believe me, you'll want to know too!

My only complaint..... I want more!

When Molly Hill's mom re-marries, she can't believe that she is being dragged on the honeymoon, to Boulder, Colorado to participate in a house swap with one of her stepfather's colleagues. Charlie Richards is also alarmed to hear that his moms intend to move him and his sisters to LA for the summer, and let a family that they hardly know inhabit their home. He's more comfortable on a bike on a mountain trail than in the streets of the city, and Molly believes that Boulder lacks the inspiration she needs to get her creative juices flowing. Both have resigned themselves to a long, boring summer. But when they find that they're staying in each other's rooms, a whole lot of mixed messages, late night IMs, misread signals, and long distance flirting is sure to ensue...

In Your Room was surprisingly candid and refreshingly humorous and human. The story is fast paced, and Fraiberg's clever writing downplays the predictability of the plot, forcing you to look at the novel with new eyes. Molly is an unpretentious character, but yet she has slightly selfish feelings about her mother's new marriage, and Charlie, despite being thoughtful, imaginative, and funny, has his faults as well. It's these imperfections in the lead characters that lend to the plot twists in order to In Your Room an enjoyable, quick, and relaxing read with a wholly satisfying ending that you'll want to visit again and again.

This book is enlightening because the recipe givers are from so many different cultures. It is a book for all levels of cooks from the Moroccan orange slices that need no cooking to the more intricate recipes from Germany and Iran. I especially like the Scottish Steak Pie, which I made for my family, and they ate every bit of it--and I don't even like to cook! This book is a keeper.

In the latest Kosher By Design cookbook, "Kosher By Design Lightens Up", Susie Fishbein guides the cook with more health concious recipes. Her goal is to make the reader more aware and knowledgeable to eat healthier. Though Susie says she is not into numbers or nutritional analysis, I do think when you write a lighten up cookbook calories counts and nutritional info. should be included (but I think this should be with every cookbook) hence the one star deduction.

The book includes over 145 recipes and 175 full color mouth watering photos. Recipes include: Baklava Bites, Faux Potao Kugel, Huevos Rancheros, Spinach Panko Crusted Trout, Italian Pot Roast, Confetti Chicken, Coconut-Lime Tart and many more. Recipes are not difficult to make and use easy to find ingredients.

Susie also includes sections on Supermarket Savvy (what to avoid at the grocery store), information on grains, flour, oils and more. A lot of great information in these pages.

Oversized 8.5 x 9.5 hardcover book is 336 pages, beautifully designed to open flat for ease of use when making a recipe.

I am not one to own a lot of cookbooks, but this one is a definite, delicious keeper.

As soon as I heard that a new Kosher By Design cookbook was coming out I quickly went online and preordered it! I knew that it would be as fabulous as the other ones were.
Being a working mom with four kids I really don't stop my busy life for much......but as soon as my new cookbook was delivered I dropped everything and sat on the couch and took in the beautiful pictures and the unique recipes. One thing I know for sure from all of my previous KBD cookbooks is that the recipes are pretested many times and won't "flop" on you.
I have gotten nothing but rave reviews from the recipes that I have tried so far! I love the fact that they are "lighter" and kid friendly at the same time. Thank you Susie for making us all look like we spent days in the kitchen preparing! The best part is that you will all be amazed at the gourmet taste coming out of our everyday kitchens!

Fishbein, Susie. "Kosher By Design Lightens Up", Mesorah Publications, 2008.

Light, Lean and Delicious

Amos Lassen

Susie Fishbein's "By Design" series of cookbooks have really caught on and I suspect not just because of the wonderful recipes but also from the way the books are published. They are beautifully photographed and the lay outs are amazing.
The sixth book in the series contains more than 145 new recipes of food dishes that are light and this is interesting in that traditional Jewish cooking has been regarded as heavy and fatty. Instead of the traditional Eastern European dishes, we have recipes for "nouveau cuisine" which gives the book an international flair. There are recipes for Argentinean Bison Steak, Korean Beef Kim Chee Skewers, Chicken Tikki Marsala and Thai Chicken Soup to name just a few.
Here is a way to lighten up with beautiful dishes which are healthy, appetizing in appearance and 100% kosher.
Ms. Fishbein shows us how kosher cooking has changed in the last ten years and combining light fare with traditional kosher cooking gives us an entire new way to enjoy kosher food. Susie Fishbein also gives us ideas for entertaining as well as healthy approaches to everything we love to eat. I, personally, love the tips she gives us for shopping as well as the fact that she provides us with a nutritional glossary. This is a book for all of us but kosher cooks will relish it for its new ideas.

Luscious, Healthy, and Easy to Prepare Recipes

Review Date: 2008-11-15
This is a sumptuous, imaginative cookbook, while at the same time keeping nutritional values high on its list of priorities. I have never seen such healthy meals with such beautiful presentations, and so lusciously delicious to the taste.

Most of the recipes are very unique, and they will take your breath away as you read the ingredients, with their marvelous blend of flavors, and look at the wonderful photography. But wait until you try them! If you want to impress your friends or family with a fabulous meal, make them something from this book.

Another plus considering our busy lives is that the recipes are not complicated to prepare. All the recipes are relatively easy to make (some of them incredibly easy), and don't take long to get from kitchen to table. The ingredients are few compared to the long lists that accompany many gourmet recipes, and make no mistake, these meals may be healthy and simple, but they are also gourmet deluxe in taste and looks.

When you see "Kosher" on a book title, you might think "Jewish food," but these creations have the flavors of the world, with many delectable Asian, Italian, Mexican, and other international dishes, as well as Middle Eastern fare, and even a knock-your-socks-off burger.

My main interest in getting this book was for the soups, and they exceeded my expectations. Those on a budget will really appreciate these wonderful bowls of goodness. Some of them will cost you next to nothing, like the Peasant Soup, Cabbage Soup, and Velvety Roasted Vegetable Barley. Put them together with the incredible Honey Oat Challah, and you will be in gastronomical heaven.

The book has a superb layout, starting with Supermarket Savvy to descriptions of the healthy ingredients that are used in the recipes. It also lists the useful gadgets that will help you in the kitchen and has Ideas for Entertaining. The recipe chapters are: Appetizers; Soups; Salads; Poultry; Meat; Fish; Eggs, Pasta and Dairy; Side Dishes; Desserts. The photography by John Uher is terrific throughout, and also adding to the book with her expertise is Bonnie Taub-Dix, who is spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. "Kosher by Design Lightens Up" is perfect for a Holiday or new house gift, and an absolute must for a new bride.

Susie Fishbein needs no introduction. She has consistently delighted us with her "Kosher by Design" series, and for my money she is The Ultimate Kitchen Diva. Thank you Ms. Fishbein, for this exciting, fabulous cookbook!

This is not only a beautiful book, but there are so many recipes with easy to follow directions, an lovely photos, but the recipes actually turn out well, and there are recipes that should appeal to everyone. Unlike many cook books where 99% of the recipes are of no interest or a repeat of what is in another cook book. With the holidays coming up I think this is one cook book that would appeal to a variety of interests.

I sent this book to my neice as a Christmas present. She isn't one to like reading but she finished this book and re-read it several times. After I read it, I understood why. The author created believable characters and situations that children AND adults can identify with. There's a terrific glossary of terms in the back of the book for people who have never been on a horse. Can't wait for the rest of the series.

In found this book to be full of emotions. Lara was really having a tough time over the Jake ordeal and with Jake liking Kate this is becoming impossible. It is SOOOOOOOOOO obviousthat the relationship between Lucas and Zoey is falling to pieces. Thenthere's the decessed relationship between Nina and Benjamin.Ireally thought that Clare and Aaron were very cruel to their parents but i wouldn't want to give anything away. I really and truely thought this was a very good book like many of Katherine Applegate's book

This is probably the best book I have read in the series.

Trying my best not to give everything away this was a great book. I think that this book is a great lead up to the next book Two-Timing Ashia. Applegate gets more into the relationship of Ashia and David and there is a suprise at the end. I'll just let you decide.

Will Kate ever find her love?

Not if Lara has anything to do with it! This book makes a good read as it continues the many subplots in this series. For example, the crew get their college acceptances and Ben and Nina's breakup blues continue. Claire and Aaron continue to plot against their parents pending marriage and I guess you'll have to read this book to find out if they are successful. However, the sexual tension between those two is still there, as is between Aisha and the Physics geek, David. I guess Aisha's forgotten that she has a boyfriend! Poor Jake is unlucky in love after being turned down by Kate who was unknowing he was her rescuer at Ben's party. Will Kate and Jake ever get it together? Enter Lara, the girl who is willing to do anything to keep Kate from her crush, Jake, even if she has to use her siblings or friends to do it. Her scheming has some not so pretty consequences that leads into the next book, Two Timing Aisha.

A Aws0me bo0k.

I just want to say "Making Out" is my favroite series, and if Katherine Applegate ever stopped making "Making Out" book's, I'd die. Anyways I'd only read half of the book, but it is really good so far, Lara is gettin pissed at Kate cause she likes Jake. Zoey (ughhh) and Lucas are gettin futher apart, Claire and Aaron are tryin to get there parents to brake up. I just wanna say., that I think Claire and Laucas should get back together, they were a good couple. =]

A must read book!!!!!!!

I'm not going to give away TOO much, but I DO have some comments. I really want Aaron and Claire to get back together. Even if he is an @$$hole, their still made for each other. It's also totally obvious that she's going to confess about the letter. You can tell that Zoey and Lucas are going to break up for the millionth time. They break up and make up in every book. I'm wondering whether Aisha is going to choose Christopher or David.(I don't really care) But if she does choose Christopher, her past "experiences" with Jeff are going to haunt her. It's also totally obvious that the truth will come out about Lara's scheme. Jake and Kate are totally going to get together. Now the important topic, my favorite characters, BENJAMIN AND NINA!!!! Nina finally came to her senses and realized that there was nothing for her on Catham Island. But when everyone finds out she's gone, they'll totally freak! ESPECIALLY BENJAMIN!!!!!(Can you tell that I want theses 2 to get back together or what?) All in all, it was an awesome book! Read the whole series! I can almost guarrantee that you'll love it!

Gordon MacDonald had accomplished in this book a well-written and easily understood guide to building internal strength. Most of us know people who face life changing or perhaps life shattering events with such strength and courage that it puts us to shame. That type of strength does not come automatically. This book points the way to obtaining that type of internal strength that carries us through our "storms of life.". It is encouraging and challenging. I highly recommend it!

You can overcome life's storms!

It is no secret that Gordon MacDonald is my favorite author because his books challenge me to grow in mature in my walk with the Lord. This book is among the best that he has written - for he shares how to focus on the inner life - so that we can survive the storms in our outer life! Throughout the book, MacDonald uses the analogy of a ship to show how we can "ride the waves" of the storms of life. He insightfully compares the keel of the ship with the cabin of the ship - and shows us how in our lives we have a "keel" and a "cabin" also. He helps us to understand what it is that we need to focus on - the keel that others may not see but keeps us afloat! The keel of the ship doesn't show most of the time. However, as Gordon points out - if you lose the keel from a ship it will sink during a storm. Unfortunately, many first-time boat owners may be tempted to focus on the interior decoration of the cabin - and neglect to make sure that the keel is in good order. MacDonald's book is designed to help us do two things: a. recognize the "keel" in our life - the soul issues we need to deal with b. focusing on the "keel" in our life - by recognizing true spirituality, strengthening our convictions and identifying our life's mission. If ou feel like the circumstances of life are storms that are buffeting you daily - read this book. You too will learn how to have a keel that will help you to weather the storms of life!

The most impactful book I've ever read!

McDaniel does an excellent job in reminding one on what is important in life, encourages one to think through who you want to become, and inspires one to develop a misson statement. This book was instrumental in preparing me for the "real world" when I was a senior in college, and I have recommended and still recomend the book to anyone who wants to move mountains in life to read it.

Whatever Storms May Come

The Life God Blesses is a must read. I have been continually challenged to be proactive. I find myself watching for warning signs and making every effort to be prepared for the sudden changes life brings. I have weathered a recent storm that shattered my emotional foundation. The loss of loved one to leukemia was unexpected and sudden. Having read and understood the importance of anchoring down in the midst of adversity kept me from completely backing out of life. I believe this book creates an awareness for those who seem to have things come easy to them. It did for me. I never wanted for much, yet during the storm I found myself needing a new perspective. This book provided that for me. I use many of the teaching principles when speaking in casual conversation. It is an everyday easy read for anyone looking to be prepared before the storm. The question is never will a storm come my way, but when is the storm going to hit. And to the latter, one never knows. It is true that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

On September 11, 2001, The World Trade Towers were attacked and I had been sent home early from my Seminary studies in Nyack, NY. Deeply troubled and disheartened by the events that had taken place that morning, I picked up The Life God Blesses and started reading it for the course to which it was assigned. How appropriate and meaningful! MacDonald's blend of story-telling and applicational approach of fleshing out Scripture in one's life proved to be the balm my heart needed that day. I appreciated his practical and realistic thoughts on dealing with a less than perfect world. Throughout the book and with gentle but wise penmenship MacDonald proves that what lies beneath the surface is the source of faith, not the outward fixtures and tasks that many so often focus on. If you are looking for a step by step "how to" book, this is not it. But if you are the type who sees lessons from God in the world about you, enjoys time alone with Him and wants a deeper, richer faith, this book may speak to your heart as it did to mine.

Overweight for most of my life I tried every diet only to blow it after 3 days. Then it was start again, not 'continue.' I never understood how calories and weight are a cumulative process -- until I was introduced to the Lifestyle Program. Finally! Understanding food and seeing I could indeed have my cake and eat it too -- if I stayed 'cumulatively' within my losing-weight range. The Lifestyle Program helped me gain control over my food and my weight. I can't rave about it enough.

This is like having your own personal weight-loss coach. It is not just a fad diet and it does take work on your part. If you are truly committed to changing your diet and exercise habits for life, then this program is fantastic. I have been doing the Lifestyle Program for Weight Loss for six months. I have lost weight and more importantly I finally feel in control of my body.

If you've tried everything to lose weight before, then this is the ONLY system for you! I've lost weight lots of times, only to find it again just around the corner. I thought I knew everything about dieting, but I was wrong. I was hesitant to commit to this (both the time and the money), but now I'm a convert. Not only did I lose the weight I wanted, I learned why I always gained it back and how not to gain weight ever again! I thought it would be hard, but it wasn't. I was so used to quick diets that it took some adjusting to being sensible. But I am very glad I bought the program and listened to the CDs. By owning the discs, I can go back and review the information any time I want. I learn something new each time. It turned out to be about the same price as attending Weight Watchers, but I have taken ownership of the CDs and my success!
