PRICE OF ADMISSION
LESLIE MARGOLIS

Rating: 3.5 Enchantments

Jasmine Green's life has been turned upside down. The screenplay that she wrote about her life, with the barely veiled characters of herself, her dad, her brother, their step mom, everyone has been discovered and credited to her recently deceased boyfriend. And if that wasn't bad enough, it's the hottest thing going right now and her father's acquired the screenplay.

PRICE OF ADMISSION is a fun book, chronicling Jasmine's discovery that the thinly veiled diary is about to make Austin's parents a million dollars and potentially ruin her own life in the process, especially when she gets a copy of the screenplay from her father, she knows one look at it will ruin everything, all her family secrets (like her brother hooking up with their twenty-three year old step mom) will be out for all the world to see.

The book has a fun premise and you have to feel sorry for Jasmine as she tries to figure out a way to come clean about the whole thing. And just when things are looking up, they come crashing right back down again. Sprinkled throughout the story are scenes from the screenplay, which highlight different aspects of Jasmine/Jess's life. From her mixed up love life to finding out her father's remarrying-again-to finding her brother kissing her new stepmother.

I really liked Duke, Jasmine's best friend and would have liked to have seen a little more of him in the book. Some parts of the story did feel a little rushed, but PRICE OF ADMISSION is still a very enjoyable read.

As a studio head's daughter, Jasmine Green's seemingly perfect life is just a facade for some very serious problems. Despite her cushy home, endless resources, and fancy cars, Jasmine's father is completely absorbed with his job, her brother is having an affair with their stepmother, and Jasmine herself is dating two guys at once. When one these guys dies, his screenplay is found in his apartment, and is sold to Jasmine's father's company. The only problem? It's really Jasmine's screenplay, and it's the story of her life. Every lurid detail.

Price of Admission is a gripping, galvanizing, and outstanding novel that explores the depths of family loyalty as Jasmine does all it takes to keep her family's dirty little secrets from being revealed. This novel doesn't fail to meet expectations, and Jasmine's clear and expressive voice is authentic. Rather than make excuses for her actions, she learns to face them, making her a character that no one can resist. The colorful cast of expressive and fallible characters make this lively and full of attitude read that will steal your attention away and won't release you until the credits roll.

As much as I liked Margolis's "Fix," I like "P.O.A." even better. There's a ton of drama on the very first page and things only get more complicated from there. Margolis maintains a sharp sense of humor all the way through. The book starts with a great premise, mixing together screenplay and text, and doubling the suspense in the process. The lead character, Jasmine Green, is totally sympathetic, and it's easy to understand her excitement, and her frustration, over the misunderstandings her script generates. I especially like the last quarter of the book, when the plot twists and re-twists. Through all the intrigue, you also get a great snapshot of Hollywood glamour as it looks up close, as well as some real pathos in the life of a high-profile family.

Lots of digs about Hollywood personalities, gossip, scandals and paparazzi

At Jasmine Green's ex-boyfriend Austin Cooper's funeral, Austin's father makes an announcement to the mourners. A screenplay called Cold-Blooded, Two-Timing Rat was found in Austin's dorm room. In honor of his dead son, the screenplay was given to an agent, who in turn sent it on to film studios. The good news? The screenplay was bought by EggBrite Studios! Who knew that Austin Cooper, the athletic son who wanted to be a doctor, would turn out to be a writer too?

Jasmine knew. She knew because the screenplay wasn't written by her dead ex-boyfriend at all. It was written by her! And the title, Cold-Blooded, Two-Timing Rat, was in reference to the fact that she was cheating on Austin. With his brother. But that's not even the worst part! The screenplay also reveals dirty family secrets about her stepmother and brother's secret love affair, her father's neglect of his children, and dirt about pretty much everyone else in Jasmine's life. She cannot let the movie be made. But what can she do to stop it? All of Hollywood is raving about the screenplay, and the production of the movie has become the hottest thing in town.

Not to mention the fact that the screenplay isn't very well disguised. Jasmine explains, "If only I'd disguised my life better. I mean, I could have done more than change everyone's name. And even that is so obvious when you think about it for half a second. The lead character, Jessica Brown, has green eyes, and I, Jasmine Green, have brown eyes. That's the only difference between us. Same with my brother, Jett/Jake. Charlie and Austin? Sure, I call them Chad and Alex, but they're so clearly the same people. Anyone who reads this and knows them will definitely recognize their personalities."

PRICE OF ADMISSION is a fast-paced and fun read that is likened to reading an entertainment magazine. There are lots of digs about Hollywood personalities, gossip, scandals and paparazzi that are laugh-out-loud funny. Portions of the scandalous screenplay are actually incorporated into the book and makes for an interesting novel technique that works well with this storyline. The only snafu with this is that sometimes the fictional/real character names get a little confusing to the reader, especially since they are so similar. And, like Hollywood, some of the characters do seem to lack depth. For example, Jasmine is so wrapped up in the screenplay debacle that she doesn't really grieve for the loss of her ex-boyfriend. Still, the story is suspenseful and made me want to keep turning the pages.

This is the kind of book that you take with you everywhere until you finish it. Price of Admission has two levels of suspense: not only are you dying to find out what happens in Jasmine's complicated, fast-paced life but you are also curious about the fate of the screenplay that she created about her life. This book provides a glimpse of the price of fame for a successful Hollywood family. My pre-teen daughter enjoyed it as much as I did. It's beautifully written and I highly recommend it.

I bought the book for my grandchildren, and the 4 and 6 year olds loved it--and I enjoyed it, kept turning the pages along with them. As a librarian and teacher, I also appreciated the quality of this imaginative, colorful book.; it arrived quickly and had secure packaging. It is a well-made, reasonably priced hardcover and am looking forward to seeing more of this author's books.

What a delightful story. The words flow from beginning to end. I was very impressed with the unusual visual ending. When you finish the story, not before, remove the book sleeve and the art on the cover produces a sense of de ja vous. A perfect story for young readers and for even younger listeners.

What a cute story. I loved it. The text was well done, and the illustrations were fitting for the book. When I tried to flip through the pages without reading I could not follow a clear story line; the text definitely is necessary. But the combination of text with pictures works very well. The illustrations reminded me of many graphic files I have created using Adobe Illustrator. There are 16 scenes (mostly 2-pages long) in this book.

The story is about a pumpkin farmer with 5 sons who work the farm. At the end of their pumpkin season they save what they consider to be the best pumpkin seeds so they will have something to plant for the next year. The less-than-best seeds must be discarded. And when you read the book you will see where those discarded seeds went and the problems they created.

I would have liked the book better if the illustrations had been a little more involved. And, of course, I wish I had been able to flip the pages at the outset and understand the story without having to read the text. But the finished product is one that I am sure children will like to have read to them time and time again. 5 stars!

Subtitled: Or, Nothing Is Better and Worse Than Pumpkins

Pumpkin Town! is a lively tale of brothers who grow pumpkins for a living. They unknowingly scatter seeds on a neighboring town causing an avalanche of pumpkins to grow. Though their actions were unintentional, the brothers take responsibility for the mountain of pumpkins that has overrun the town.

They harvest all the pumpkins and clean up the vines to bring in a tidy profit for the town. The townspeople are so overjoyed that they reward the brothers with large, sweet watermelons. The open ending encourages young readers to speculate on what will happen during the next growing season.

Pumpkin Town! is a delightful story of values that honors the reader's ability to draw conclusions for themselves. While many children's books offer a "knock you over the head" moral, this story subtly guides the reader to discover the values of taking responsibility and having a strong work ethic. The lyrical language and bright pages keep even the most distractible children entertained. The illustrations, a colorful and creative mix of paste paper, photographs, fabrics, and computer imaging provide a rich visual texture to the story.

Pumpkin Town! is recommended for ages 4-8. For the younger set, it is a funny tale to be enjoyed. For slightly older children, it can serve as a springboard to develop the logical skill of cause and effect as well as a fun creative writing "what happens next" project.

Armchair Interviews says: Children can draw their own conclusions.

I purchased this book on the recommendation from a friend of mine. Most books about BDSM are "How To" or fantasy books, the puppy papers wasn't either. The puppy papers was a fascinating book, it took me a while to realize that this book was non fiction. To confirm this I went onto the Internet to see if this Steven person was real, he certainly is, which made this book that much better. Also there are references to nationally known people in the BDSM community who Steven is friends with. Another thing about this book is that it does not have flowery descriptive words or phrases, it is written in the moment in letter conversation form. Their conversations are about life, their relationship, puppy's work, family, even when her husband accuses her of having relationship with another man, her past play partners and Master, her need to be with Steven, her need to serve and a lot of kink.

I was surprised when the story took a turn when Steven started to ask puppy questions about her life and told her that he may be putting a book together from their emails. At this point, Steven becomes an interviewer and puppy continues to reveals open and honestly all aspects of her life. I haven't found a woman that is this comfortable with herself, that can speak so openly about her life, as for myself I don't know if I can be so open and honest about myself either.

I was fascinated by puppy's letters answering Steven questions and that they don't always follow the normal pattern of conversation, but life doesn't always flow smoothly. In one of the letters she brings up about playing doctor/patient with her girl friends, describing how girls learn about their body, I was surprised to say the lest, this is a subject that is never discussed. When asking about her first BDSM awakening, experience which took place in a Hotel room with a stranger, you can take safe and sane and throw that out the window. I found puppy a very erotic kinky masochist who is very devoted to her Dominant and open to all types of play.

The progression of their relationship from Top/bottom to Dominant/submissive is evident in how puppy address's Steven, I found that very interesting. I do wish that there was more about Steven in the last part of the book, he took a back seat to puppy's story which was a good thing, but so is he. In researching Stevens life on the Internet I found it fascinating that he is in the adult porn sex business and his involvement with the police and federal government. I wanted more of him in the book.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Puppy Papers, Puppy writes very well in the moment and has a wonderful sense of humor. If their relationship lasts and evolves I want to read about it, they certainly do have an interesting life.

By the way, the title has nothing to do with puppy play, this book is about puppy's life in her letters. For myself, I have been involved in the BDSM for many years.

I couldn't decide whether to call this book a biography or an autobiography. It is through a series of emails, over a period of six months, in which Steven Toushin asks puppy sharon probing questions about her past and her understanding of sexuality (in particular hers) that sharon's story comes out but it is through her writings that we get to know her. It could be thought of as an interview as well. Perhaps structurally it is a hybrid. Personally, I like that I can't easily classify this book. It allows it to function as all of the above and creates the ability to enter the material in a variety of ways.

Conceptually it is interesting to find myself (as the reader) participating as voyeur in the budding relationship between Toushin and puppy. To observe as she slowly opens up revealing a fascinating sexual life from childhood to the present. Steven stays out of the way, revealing very little about himself, creating plenty of room for her to divulge her sexual awakenings. The correspondence between the two plays out much like life. There are the mundane emails, the "how are you. I'm fine" aspects, but tucked in between those are treasures of information. Some of which most women growing up in rural and suburban middle America will surely recognize and others that are truly unique to sharon; her openness to exploration reveals a woman self-possessed enough not to be bogged down in the guilt and shame of a slow but maturing understanding of her sexual desires and needs.

sharon's descriptions of her introduction to the BDSM world are absorbing, typically awkward, and sometimes funny as she talks about the pitfalls, as well as the satisfying encounters. Her point-of-view is adventurous and sometimes reveals a naiveté that is inevitable when entering a new world of experience. It is encouraging for those new to this sexual realm to read from a woman's point-of-view who remains intact despite unsuccessful experiences. A woman who handles the situations with calmness, self-possession and a sense of humor not allowing others to defeat or discourage her from continuing her quest to find sexual satisfaction. She seems to know this is all a part of her sexual education, which she is clearly in charge of. It's refreshing to read a woman's story that does not revolve around exploitation.

For those like me, if you begin to become suspicious of who this Steven Toushin guy is (especially after sharon reveals stories about some of the creeps she's encountered) never fear. Check out the appendix. There is plenty of information about him there. Though I do wish he would have included more about himself within the context of the email exchanges I understand the attempt to stay out of the way of sharon's story. It is sometimes successful, sometimes not. There are times when I begin wondering more about who he is which becomes a distraction from sharon.

This book is open-ended leaving the reader with many questions, particularly regarding sharon and Steven's growing relationship. It's some of the most titillating aspects of the book and if you want arousing material then you'll be clamoring for more details regarding their intense sexual interactions. I smell a sequel, which I'd buy. My curiosity has been piqued. The reader is given enough information to keep interested but there is still plenty that is to be explored. Again it is a strategy that points to one of life's conundrums, the inability for one person to fully know another person's mind and the desire to probe their lives all the more intensely. It also reminds us that one cannot judge a person by the way they look. There are plenty of professionals, suburban mothers, and other "normal" everyday people who have interesting and even amazing hidden lives. Makes you what to stop and find out what lurks behind the façade of normalcy that so many exude. It's good to know there are people from all walks of life waking up sexually and being brave enough to follow their inner desires.

This book was great. It offers insight into her thought processes and how she learns. I had my sub read this book so she could get an idea of what the lifestyle is like. She came away with things she liked and didn't like about it. So it was great book for her to understand the joys of bdsm and also express some of her concerns. Great book and should be in any BDSM bedroom library.

This book is full of examples of brutally racial crimes that go un reported or underreported ONLY because it's Black on White. When you look at all the coverage of the Sean Bell case, the Rodney King case, the Duke "fake rape" case, the Tawna Brawley case, the Imus debacle, etc. you wonder why none of these horrible cases never became common knowledge. People like me KNOW why, but "progressives" always come up with excuses.

When we select a book for reading together at night (I find it helps children's literacy if we take it in turns reading a page); this is the one we most often select. Why? The characters ring true, the situation is about something we can all relate to : bringing out the best in yourself while coping with new and different challenges; personal growth. Also, it just APPEALS to us! (And the children love the funny voices I do with the animals! Sometimes we laugh so much, and the children say "Mom, RJ wouldn't approve of you making him talk like that", and I pause, but we all laugh some more. Because the truth is, RJ is so realistic, you CAN imagine him glaring at you for making him 'talk' the wrong way. I just love this book - I wish it'd been around when I was a child.
Read it soon - with someone you love.

Greetings all. I am a schoolteacher from England.I came across this book via the web and, as it fit into the parameters of the English Literature studies we were undertaking ie 'Farm Animals in Literature', I purchased a copy for the 'New Talent' section of our studies. (I like to expose the students to a wide and varied cross-section of literature in our society.) WHAT a pleasant surprise! This is a very articulate, and amusing book, with characters so deftly sketched you feel as if you'd been friends with them all your life. No sooner had I finished the book, then I wanted to read it again. Of particular interest was the way the author avoided making either of the main protagonists more worthy of our support. Indeed, we warmed to both sides as we learnt, independently, about their needs and interests, about their stance and why they had taken it. SUCH a balanced view of society I can only applaud! What fascinates me most I think, is the way that the animals are more people-representative than animals (think George Orwell's 'Animal Farm'), yet they remain intrinsically animal. Never does the author stoop to that time-worn path of making animals speak in human tongue. No, they can only converse amongst themselves, and in mime, albeit haltingly, to the human protagonists. I am FASCINATED by this book and can not recommend it highly enough for study by classes of all levels, and interests in literature. No matter how deep you dip, you will always come up with something new and different from this extremely articulate, intelligent, and well thought-out novel.

It's way cool that one of the characters shares the same name as me , Jake, but that wasn't the only reason why I liked this book. I'm not sure why I liked it really, just that it read well. I didn't intend to read it just yet, it's my sister's book, but I had a look at it and I guess I got hooked. Perhaps that's what makes a good book? You don't want to put it down. Anyway, that's what happened to me, I just kept wanting to see what happened next, and how it all turned out, and I kept reading. Missed my favourite TV show and everything! But I don't mind. As I said , it was a good book. Although next time I don't think I'll start it just before my show's due to come on! I hope this review makes it onto the web, it'd be way cool to see my name in print.

This book has several short essays on Christian life, most of which impressed deeply upon me - Tozer's exhortations drive you deeper into relationship with God and are immensely encouraging and challenging at the same time.

Very challenging book for the church today! He talks about issues that are very convicting and challenging to lukewarm Christians.

It's a shame that this book does not have more information provided by Amazon. I have read some thirty of Tozer's books and The Root of the Righteous is far and above the best of his editorial writings. While certain other collections better focus on a particular subject, for sheer passion, power and insight this book is unsurpassed. There was a time when I even considered it Tozer's best work (even ahead of The Pursuit of God)! I would highly recommend it to anyone--particularly if you are a fan of Tozer's writing because of its force and intensity.

The Root of the Righteous is 185 pages long, including 46 editorials and a preface by A.W. Tozer.

Sampling of Chapter Titles:
1. The Root of the Righteous
2. We Must Give Time to God
4. Listen to the Man Who Listens to God
5. We Must Hear Worthily
9. Bible Taught or Spirit Taught?
11. No Regeneration Without Reformation
16. Christ Is the Pattern
20. We Stand in Christ's Triumph
27. The Presence More Important than the Program
29. The Hunger of the Wilderness

From the Back Cover:
"No man has any right to offer advice who has not first heard God speak. No man has any right to counsel others who is not ready to hear and follow the sound counsel of the Lord." (From Chapter 4)

"The idea that God will pardon a rebel who has not given up his rebellion is contrary both to the Scriptures and to common sense. How horrible to contemplate a church full of persons who have been pardoned but who still love sin and hate the ways of righteousness." (From Chapter 11)

"To pray effectively it is required of us that there be no unblessed areas in our lives, no parts of the mind or soul that are not inhabited by the Spirit, no impure desires allowed to live within us, no disparity between our prayers and our conduct." (From Chapter 24)

An Island of Truth in a Sea of Schlock Christianity

This book is classic Tozer, and one of his best!

As a very orthodox in worship Presbyterian, I particularly like the way Tozer comments on how "The Great God Entertainment" has infiltrated our churches and has taken hold on "the retarded saints of today". Yet this book was written in 1955!

Tozer is an island of Truth in today's wishy-washy sea of dumbed down, "smiley face" Modern Evangelicalism and the Church Growth Movement. It's too bad American Protestantism hasn't heeded Tozer's warning.

Another Treasury of Tozer Teachings

Tozer speaks the truth of God plainly, simply, and powerfully. This book is a delight of bite-sized teachings by the master.
Tozer's deep love for God saturates each sentence. "[God] is all love, and those who trust Him need never know anything but that love." and "[God] is not hard to please, though He may be hard to satisfy."

But Tozer is no softy...he challenges, exhorts, and convicts skillfully using the sword of the Spirit. "Many a solo is sung to show off; many a sermon is preached as an exhibition of talent; many a church is founded as a slap at ome other church." and "Lacking love, prophets, teachers, orators, philanthropists and martyrs are sent away without reward."

Thanks, Tozer. I needed all the observations that you have leanred and written.

Best French Vocabulary building book

Schaum's book here is the best book I've found on vocabulary building. Although it is targeted at students taking exams, the book's rich content will benefit any serious student of French. A whopping 46 chapters, divided into 10 major units covering Travel, Services, Food, Shopping, Medical Care, Home Life, Entertainment, Sports & Leisure, Education and Work, and Appendices on Numbers, Time Expressions, The Francophonie, Clothing & Shoes Sizes, etc, it provides tons of vocabulary items, to meet most of your everyday needs. It is also illustrated with many pictures (black & white) e.g. interior of a car, an airport, bathroom, etc with items labelled.

Most other vocab. books simply categorize topics and then throw a long list of items at you, with no drill/exercises to help reinforce your learning. For me vocab. acquisition and retention need drill and exercises to complement memorization. The book's drills and exercises do just that. Apart from Schaum, Practice Makes Perfect's French Vocabulary by Eliane Kurbegov, is the other book I know that also offers exercises to complement the categorized topics. However, at 22 Chapters, it is only half the size of Schaum, and nowhere as comprehensive.

I own several vocab books: Schaum's, Practice Makes Perfect, Mastering French Vocabulary by W.Fischer and 10,000 French Words by W. Rowlinson.

Overall, I rate Schaum the best.

Note: I have not checked 6,000+ Essential French Words which comes with a CD that reportedly pronounces several hundred essential words, allows you to build flash cards and I think also has exercises.

Very useful book...

I studied French for many years. I can tell you much of the vocabulary in this book is very, very useful. I would fancy that an American student of French would benefit from this than a Canadian one, since they would be less likely to cover these terms in French courses on the high school in the U.S., and they wouldn't cover these everyday words in Canadian French university courses or American ones. You are dealing with terms related to cars, sports, travelling, hotel reservations etc.. I think that is useful, and you can't feel fluent without knowing these terms. I have a very old version of this book (1985), and I eventually want to get this newer one and compare.

I think it's good

I borrowed this book from a library but I think I need to spend a bit more time on it so I have decided to purchase my own copy. Basically it's different from the other vocab. books which it has exercises for you to do for each unit, and the materials are not very condensed, as with other vocab. books where they just categorize and throw a bunch of vocabs at you. Learning vocab needs drill and exercises, not pure memorization and I think this book does well in this area. I think if you really follow the book and work on all the exercises you will learn a lot. The only thing which made me take a star out of my rating is that the pictures and perhaps the layout of the book is a bit boring...ZZzzzz and outdated but actually the book wasn't very old at all.

I am also going to try out the grammar book and I hope that works well for me.

I have given this product a hundred per cent rating because:
1)it is easy to understand and
2)it is comprehensive; it contains some topics, such as "L'enseignment" and "Au travail" that are rarely found in other books of its category.
I recommend this product to anyone who wants to learn French fast and easily.

Perfect for the intermediate learner

The first time I saw the book in a book shop, I didn't buy it because it looked like it was meant to be used by students cramming for exams. Maybe this is indeed the purpose of the book. I am an adult learner trying to learn French on my own. Since I don't have to pass any exams, I didn't think the book would be of any use to me. The second time I saw the book, I bought it anyway because it wasn't so expensive and I thought maybe I would pick up some useful vocabulary anyway. The book is surprisingly good. In fact, this is the best book I've found on vocabulary building. Its 46 chapters and the appendixes cover the words and phrases needed in a wide variety of situations. Maybe advanced students may find the book easy, but the level of difficulty is just about right for an intermediate learner like me.

I was shocked & amazed that I could find this old book, purchase it & have it delivered to my home in 2 days for less than $10. It was not available ANYWHERE ELSE! What service & what a deal. My class of 1st graders was pleased with the reading of this specific book which went hand-in-hand with our study & class project.

Snipp, Snapp and Snurr learn How Things Get Done

This is the most fanciful of the Snipp, Snapp Snurr books (or Flicka, Ricka, Dicka) that I have seen. In this one, the three Swedish boys would like some butter for their bread. But there is none in the house.

The boys go on a quest for butter and discover what it takes to create butter. Butter is made from milk witch comes from a cow that eats green grass that needs the Sun to grow. In order to get their butter, they must appeal to the Sun so that it will shine and make the grass grow green and etc. etc.

Each pair of pages has the story on the left and a painted illustration by the author on the right. A fun and fanciful story that helps teach about how things depend on one another.

This is the most fanciful of the Snipp Snapp Snurr tales (or the Flicka Ricka and Dicka stories). Snipp, Snapp, and Snurr, the three Swedish boys, are hungry one day and ask their mother for some buttered bread. But there is no butter. The boy must have their bread plain.

In order for the boys to get butter, they will need milk. but the cow isn't giving any because the grass is brown because the sun has not been shining.

Snipp, Snapp, and Snurr appeal to the sun and tell it that it needs to shine and make the grass green. Their appeal is heard and eventually there is butter for their bread again.

Each pair of pages has story on the left and an illustration painted by the author on the right. A rather amusing and fun tale. Read all of the Snipp, Snapp and Snurr books.

We bought this book for my son at 6 months. By 9 months, he was opening it, and touching the pages. His favorite is the back page where he can feel the spiky bale of straw. At 19 months now, he still enjoys turning the pages. He also has the Touch and Feel Dinosaur book in the same series by DK. If you venture into that one, just be prepared for the stickiness of the T-rex's tongue. I've seen it make several adults jump a bit. :-) All-in-all, these books encourage young children to turn pages and interact with books, and they grow with them too. My son will now sit, point and name what he sees, jabber a/b the contents, and let me read the text to him. We liked this tractor book enough for our son that we bought 2 additional copies to give as gifts to friends.

The little one had a copy of the tractor board book, but it was smaller and falling apart. I ordered him this one and he loves it even more than the first one. There are pictures of animals and a farmer along with the pictures of tractors. It's great for any little one who loves tractors and animals.
