This is a review of the unabridged audio of "King Solomon's Mines" by H. Rider Haggard; narrated by John Richmond.

I grew up on the movie so it was quit a shocker to read the book. As stated in the beginning there are no petticoated women in this book. It is a men's adventure written by a man for men. You can not miss the hand of H. Rider Haggard as he has a unique sense of humor that pops up at the strangest times. And as with written stories this one is much more intricate than the movie adaptations. You will find many assumptions of the time such as any complex construction must have been built by white people and natives on their own may turn savage.

The story is told first person by Allan Quartermain. Nevil is off to make his fortune by finding King Solomon's lost diamond mines. Allan sends him a map to help. This is the last anyone heard from Nevil. Turns out that Nevil is really the estranged brother of Henry Curtis. Sir Henry Curtis now wants to make amends and he with his friend Captain John Good, bribe Allan Quartermain to take them across an endless desert and trough impassible mountains to an adventure that will hold you to the very end. Along with them is their self imposed helper Umbopa who carries a secret of his own.

An added plus is narration by John Richmond; He brings the characters to life and adds to the mystique that this story has been passed down.

Fans waiting for a sequel to the first Vampire Island book will not be disappointed by the second installment in the series, "The Knaveheart's Curse."

Maddy and her family are fruit-bat vampire hybrids living in New York. They hope that by living a blood-free life they can truly become humans. I haven't read the first book so I won't pretend to be an expert on Maddy, Lexie and Hudson. From what I gather, the first book follows all three children. "The Knaveheart's Curse," however, is centered on Maddy.

Maddy has zero social graces and a love for mildew so it's not hard to see why she has zero friends. Most eleven-year-olds don't have much in common with her. The day she blackmails sweet Dakota Underhill to be her friend for just one day changes a lot. On the day they were supposedly meant to be friends, the leader of the most vicious gang of Old World vamps, the Knavehearts, came to town. And the leader is here for none other than Lexie, Maddy's older dead-poet-obsessed sister. Maddy has to save her sister with the help of Hudson and, surprisingly, Dakota Underhill. Her only problem is which one is the evil Old World vampire and which one is her sister?

Maddy takes on an evil much bigger than herself, with help from her brother, friend, unlikely allies, and a new cape. Oh, and that Box of Disgusting should come in handy too. "The Knaveheart's Curse" is a short and funny story by Adele Griffin. I can't help but think of mini-Goths every time I think of it. Hudson doesn't do much except freak out Old-World-style and then help a little at the end. Dakota is an unlikely but useful ally. All in all, it's a funny and enjoyable book that gives yet another new set of vampires and vampire lore to love and remember with fondness.

First of all I must say Maria Gripe is my favorite writer since I was at school(now I'm 20). But last year when I discovered this long story of the shadows, I couldn't believe it! I was fascinated reading this first part, when the beautiful friendship between Berta and Carolin begins, and I loved all the mysteries around Carolin. She was such a rare girl! But then when that tremendous secret was revealed I understood a little more about her behaviour. I recomend this book and I hope I can read the last part soon.

I liked the book a lot, because it's about lacrosse and lacrosse is almost my favorite sport. There are couple of reasons why I liked this book. One is it was a great book, it had a lot of people yelling and getting mad at each other.
There are some mean people and some nice people in this book. Todd and Jeff are the nicest players. Todd is overweight and the doctor told him to lose weight! So he plays lacrosse. Jeff, the coach's son, tries to help Todd become a better lacrosse player. Garry, Todd's brother, has played lacrosse for 4 years and is a little nice. Michael is very, very mean. He is the top scorer in the league. He doesn't want Todd to play lacrosse because he thinks Todd stinks. Evan is also very mean. He likes to be around Michael all the time.
I would recommend this book to people that like lacrosse. It was a great book and I think those kind of people would like this book very much.

Traitor or hero?
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-15
Set at the battle of Gettysburg this is story that does not glorify war. Instead, it gets children thinking about the fact that war often involves senseless death. Questions to ask after reading this book: Does the young Union bugle boy make the right decision? Is he a hero or a traitor? Ask young readers to look at his decision to halt the charge from the points of view of the different players in the war - his brother, his parents, his Conferderate counterpart, the generals, and even President Lincoln. Although this is a picture book, its message is one that can be debated even by high school students.
