Disfruten.

Elisa is genuine, funny and extremely likeable.

Elisa Michaels is a second-grader living in New York City. She has both an older and a younger brother. Each chapter is a separate story about Elisa and her family members. In the first chapter, Elisa misses her grandmother, who lives in Florida. She won't be able to see her for seven months! Elisa's mom invents a way for Elisa to "have breakfast with Grandma."

Several stories deal with Marshall, who is two years old when the book begins. Elisa cares for her little brother while the new babysitter plays chess. She goes all out to keep him happy. In another story, the family worries that Marshall is getting too old for his pacifier. When they visit the zoo, Elisa is inspired by a baby gorilla and she niftily solves her little brother's pacifier problem. In "Marshall Makes Mischief," Marshall is determined to open the library's fake Christmas presents. Elisa tries hard, but she can't control him. She does, however, come to a big realization about the library and about presents.

Elisa learns that having wishes come true can be bittersweet. In "Chocolate All Day Long," she gets permission to eat only chocolate for one entire glorious day --- but feels differently toward chocolate by dinnertime. In the last chapter, she travels alone to visit her grandmother and soon learns about homesickness. This chapter neatly mirrors the book's first story, with Elisa's grandmother helping her "have breakfast with" her mom.

Debbie Tilley illustrates the book with adorable cartoony pictures. They show rather old-fashioned looking characters, which suits the classic feel of the stories.

If you're looking for wild adventure, look elsewhere. These are gentle, good-hearted, winning stories full of humor and emotion without being sentimental. Elisa is genuine, funny and extremely likeable. I highly recommend this warm and wonderful celebration of family.

This is a great book to help kids experience what it's like to have a baby-sitter for the first time. In this book, Laura is coming to stay with Emily while her parents go out together. At first, Emily misses her parents and then she and Laura have fun together. I reccomend this book if your child is having a sitter for the first time.

Patricia Hermes' EMMA DILEMMA AND THE TWO NANNIES tells of Emma, who loves the family's new Irish nanny Annie. Annie likes pets, keeps secrets, and wears wonderful clothes - but when she returns to Ireland for three weeks to see her sisters, her charges panic: what if Annie doesn't return? What if their parents hire a new, less interesting nanny? Both are excellent, different chapter books with interesting dilemmas kids won't easily predict.

Fantastic for early readers!

Categorized as "An I Can Read Book" EMMA'S STRANGE PET is perfect for readers in grades 1st and up.

Max wants a puppy like his friend Josh, but his sister Emma is allergic to animals with fur. All seems lost until Emma tells her parents that she too wants a pet. So for her birthday they take her and her brother, Max, to the pet store where she adopts a lizard they name "Stranger." Max relates to Stranger as he is adopted too.

This book is wonderful in many ways as it talks about the affects of life-long allergies, adoption of children and pets, as well as the special bond siblings share, parent love, and how to compromise without giving in or creating hurt feelings. I found EMMA'S STRANGE PET by JEAN LITTLE inspirational, heartwarming, and fun to read with my younger children ages 7 & 8. After reading this book, my children asked several questions regarding adoption and different kinds of pets.

This splendid book would make a wonderful addition to any library and classroom for discussion on any of the topics I have mentioned here.

This reviewer (and her children) highly recommends Little's book EMMA'S STRANGE PET.

When a little boy's big sister dies he deals with his feelings. Children need answers and a way to help them deal with their loss. I think this book is helpful in dealing with pain and loss.
I also recommend a faith based video(...).

For anyone unfamiliar with the Eric and Julieta stories, I highly recommend them. My toddler (aged 3.5) is bilingual in Spanish and English and she absolutely adores these stories. The characters are easy for children to relate to. Plus, I love the fact that the text is given in both languages, which I think makes these stories terrific teaching tools.

"My Summer Find"
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 1998-07-14
I 'found' this book while browsing in the public library, waiting for my kids as they participated in the summer reading program. Living in NC, the subtitle, 'A Novel of Passion and Mystery in the Blue Ridge' caught my eye. This was a great book. Too bad it's not easy to find as you don't have to live in NC to appreciate and enjoy it. EVE'S MOUNTAIN is about a mountain owned by a wealthy businessman who has promised to keep the place as is, in memory of his wife who went missing there one summer many years before. Now the owner is there trying to recover from a stroke, bringing family members and others who all seem to be trying to escape from something. The mystery of Eve's Mountain eventually involves them all, for better or for worse. Once I got into who was who and what was what, this is one I couldn't put down.
