Hansel and Gretel and Little Brother and Little Sister have always been two of my favorite fairy tales because they tell of siblings working together and succeeding. Consequently, I am happy Barefoot Books has published this new collection of brother and sister tales gathered from around the world. These stories make great bedtime reading to or for siblings. The illustrations are also beautiful and enhance the stories by showing native settings. This would make a great gift to some of your favorite siblings or young children who are just learning how to work together. The strengths and weaknesses of each sibling complement the other sibling, ensuring the success they might not accomplish by themselves. Families are universal and this collection proves it.

I had the honor of reading this beautiful book when it was first published. It is an amazing book of love, dedication, loyalty and commitment. Even if you are fortunate enough not to have a family member serving in the military overseas this book is a 'must read'. This is a wonderful book to teach our children the importance of supporting our military in whatever capacity they serve.
Wonderful job, Maureen. I wish you all the success with this book and any others that come along.

New book by Ibbotson

Review Date: 2005-12-13
This book was published in England in May 2005 and will release in USA in 2006. So I bought the British copy as I could not wait for another marvelous story from Eva to send me into stitches of laughter.

In the story a brother and sister, Madlyn and Rollo, are sent to stay with their kindly Uncle at his "Castle Clawstone" set in the Scottish Highlands. On arrival they find out the dreamy sounding castle is falling apart. The castle is under a huge debt and no funds are available for repair. There are friendly ghosts living in the castle, as well as some rare wild white cattle living on the property and they are at risk if the castle isn't saved. And who is the mysterious being hiding in the library? The siblings have auditions with ghosts to find the best ghosts to scare visitors to complete their plan to turn the castle into a haunted tourist attraction. As usual; Ibbotson's ghosts are nutty as they can be including the Bloodstained Bride ,a pair of hairy Scottish feet without a body, a girl cut in half in a magic act, and others. Madlyn turns out to be a natural financial genius and they start making money. But a neighbor has very evil plans for the cattle, and it will take every effort by the siblings and their new alllies to fight back. I highly reccommend!

Delightful

Is there *anyone* on the planet who doesn't like Beverly Cleary's books and the wonderful characters she created?

Beezus and Ramona (along with Henry Huggins and the rest of the gang on Klikitak Street) were part of my childhood. 40 years later, they were just as appealing to my own son. And don't tell anyone -- although we bought these audiobooks when he was about 8, at 12 he still likes to put these on ocassionally and listen. Why? In large part because of Stockard Channing's masterful performance here. Her rendition of Ramona is EXACTLY how we imagine this impish little creature would talk.

I highly recommend these books, both because of the delightful stories and characters that Mrs. Clearly created for us, and because Stockard Channing has brought them to life so perfectly here. The stories are reminiscent of simpler times and will take parents back to their own childhoods while providing toddlers to tweens with good, wholesome entertainment.

We listened on road trips, and unlike certain kids entertainment (a certain purple dinosaur comes to mind), you won't want the kids to wear headphones to preserve your sanity. You'll want it on the main speakers for everyone in the car to enjoy.

Five stars!

Definite Buy for Brother with a new baby sister
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-26
My son wanted this from Santa and was so excited when he got it. We read it often. He likes to supplant his name for Benny and his sister's name for Delilah. Also instead of "she has no hair and no teeth" he says "mommmy say she has curly hair and 6 teeth". For several months his baby sister could have been 'a piece of furniture' now she's more interactive and he's more interested in her. This book has really helped him to accept his baby sister.
