Two young orphan siblings are sent to live with an elderly lady at the English seaside. Eight-year-old Ben's disability
with other families turns into an advantage there as he discovers that his "sight" finds him new friends and can help save--or
destroy--the world. This charming story of magic stands alone, but it was a relief to find that the trilogy has already been
written. I'm anxious to know the fate of the mythical "fisherfolk" that little Ben and Aunt Alice can see, but which practical
Jennet cannot. This story could work as a read-aloud to an elementary-age audience (though a bit long for a class), and should
appeal to those who like Harry Potter.
Wonderfully Written and Great Fun!! A Must Read!!

As we join the story, we find Jennet (12) and her brother, Ben (8) on the train to meet their new guardian, Alice Boston (92).
It seems that Jennet and Ben are orphans who have been moving from foster home to foster home (four so far) because Ben is
different...he can see ghosts, this has cost them four new homes and Jennet is determined that he won't mess things up for
them in Whitby with Alice. Upon arriving in Whitby by train, they meet Alice Boston their new caretaker, and are surprised
to find that she's an eccentric old lady...kind of the town busybody. It's not long before they fall into a casual friendship
with Alice and things start to get a little weird around town.
The Whitby Witches turns out to be something of a junior paranormal thriller with a dark side...but not too dark. The cast of characters include Ben, Jennet, Alice, the ladies circle (friends of Alice who meet once a month and includes Prudence, Matilda, Dora, and Edith), Rowena Cooper (our resident bad guy), and the local Aufwader's - the strange fisher people who live in caves by the sea (Nelda, Hesper, Tarr, and Silas). It all seems to start shortly after the arrival of Rowena Cooper...Alice's friends start dying, all labeled accidents by the police, but Alice believes differently (as does Ben who has met Nelda the young Aufwader girl whose father and uncle are missing). We really are given two parallel plot lines, the deaths of the ladies circle and the Aufwader mystery (including the search for the mysteries, mythical moonkelp). Everything in the story is linked to the moonkelp, the ruins of the abbey, and the mysteries Sister Bridget. Will Nelda and Ben find the moon kelp and save her people from extinction? Will Alice find out what Rowena is up to and will they all come out of it alive? You'll have to read to find out...and I don't think you'll be disappointed!
Overall, this is one of the best children's books I've read in the last couple of years...it's got mystery, intrigue, the paranormal, danger (and lots of it), bad guys that might just get away with it (and those are the best kind)...but it's also got heart and characters that you can really get to know and like! I could hardly put it down and my daughter ate it up! I give The Whitby Witches five stars and hope that they reprint the rest of the series soon, we're anxious to get our hands on the second book! Highly recommended!!

What a wonderful book. It addresses a universal problem in a gentle, humorous way. I plan to give it as part of every second
child baby gift to help ease the introduction of a new baby into the household. My oldest grandson loves monsters so this
has been a great way to get him to think about jealousy. Highly recommended.

bedtime readings with your own little monster!

This book was funny. I got it 6 days ago. Here's the big question: IS FRANK HARDY A THIEF?? No way! But somebody's making
it look as if he is. A really cool book on baseball statistics was stolen from the school library. Now it's made a sudden
and surprising comeback-in Frank's backpack! Frank and Joe have a pretty good batting average when it comes to solving mysteries.
But this one is no fun, because if Frank gets the blame, he'll miss his basketball team's first game of the season! The ending
is funny when Wendy, the thief, and also the girl who has a crush on Joe, says she won't wear Love Is in the Air perfume anymore
and Joe tells her not to have a crush on him until they were in high school. I think that's weird. How come in The Hardy Boys
series she wasn't mentioned? I mean they are in high school! Everyone else was mentioned except for the bullies.

I recently discovered the "Miko" books written by Brigitte Weninger and so I thought I'd look into some of her other works.
"Why Are You Fighting, Davy?" (which is illustrated by Eve Tharlet and nicely translated into English by Rosemary Lanning)
is the first in her series of "Davy" books that I have read. It's a compelling story of friends who get into a fight, but
decide to make up.
Davy has a best friend named Eddie and they enjoy playing together by the brook in their neighborhood. Their play on this particular day has a nautical theme --- one of them has decided to build a dam and the other is building a boat. They shake hands on it and get down to work on their building. They're having a lot of fun, but when the dam bursts, it sweeps away Davy's boat. Davy is terribly upset. They get into a fight and roll over and over until they fall in the water. Then, Davy says that he never wants to see Eddie again.
Davy decides to shun Eddie and looks for other opportunitites to play. But he begins to find that there's nobody available to play with --- and he sure doesn't want to play with his baby sister. Will Davy and Eddie get back together.
Anyone who's ever argued with a best friend can find something to identify with in this story. The illustrations have a simple, pastel look and are generally comforting. As bunnies, the characters are rather cute, but the illustrations have a unique and special quality.

After fighting with a best friend, Davy found less fun to play alone. The relationship is mended as they found strengths of
each other and needed help. A good lesson for young children to work things out together. I also like the beautiful illustration
and would like to read others in the series.

Davy is the youngest of the Rabbit siblings and enjoys a special place in his family. So he's not entirely sure what to make
of it when Mother Rabbit announces to him and his siblings that she's going to be having a baby. When Father Rabbit asks whether
they would prefer a brother or a sister, Davy gets the idea that he actually has a choice. He talks with his friend Eddie,
who actually has a baby brother and gets some interesting advice.
What will Davy eventually make of the new baby? How will they get along? This book tackles the "new baby" issue in a fun, funny and ultimately charming and comforting way. The illustrations are soft and warm. The text is probably too long for younger readers to read by themselves, but would be great for read-aloud.

My daughter is 2 1/2 years old. She wants to have it read to her every night before bed. It is a wonderful story about adding
a new baby to the family. It would be a great resource for any parent needing help introducing the idea of a new baby brother
or sister to a preschooler.

Kids always amaze me with what they say and the way they reason. Although I come from a different cultural back ground, reading
the series of books getting the kids to bring their thoughts down to paper by Stuart Hample, I can clearly see there is no
major difference between childeren and their logical thinking and their questions. How on earth do they grow up to be so different?

A very sweet book. Many of the entries made me burst out laughing. Others made me cry. The children really capture that
ambivalence--that love and loathing, gratitude and irritation--we all feel towards our siblings when we're young (maybe even
when we're not so young...).

'Zack in the Middle' is a delightful book about a seven year old boy who is surrounded by an older sister and a younger sister.
Told from a middle child point of view, the book examines the good and not so good points of being the one in the middle.
The story leaves you with positive feelings of Zack being surrounded by love. Written as an easy reader, this book is a good
addition to beginner reader collections for libraries and classrooms. Colorful drawings, a limited vocabulary, and no more
than two sentences on a page, make this an excellent choice for an emerging reader who also happens to be a middle child.
