I sent a copy of this book to my newborn niece. In it I wrote a note: "Please make sure you have your mom and dad read this to you as soon as possible. It contains many helpful hints for you to avoid going to bed on time. Use them wisely."

My brother and my sister-in-law are probably going to kill me, but I don't care. If this book does not somehow wind up in bedtime literature history (like "Goodnight Moon"), it will be a travesty. The combination of lilting word rhythms and sweet illustrations will charm and soothe any restless child, and a few adults I can think of as well. Highly recommended.

What a great book!

This is such a wonderful book to read to a child before bed. Lots of amazing drawings and a cute story. Even if you are not a big fan of Dog Eat Doug (you should be though...very funny), it's a cute and colorful book for any infant and young child.

I was so impressed with it I picked up another copy for my office waiting room, so parents will have a good book to read to their children while they wait.

The author/artist does a wonderful job...knew his work in college (go 'Saders!) and I think he'll continue to produce some amazing comics and children's books.

Love it

A fun book, and one my two boys keep re-reading. Several notches above most books for this reading level, both in terms of plot and storytelling. It also makes a great birthday gift for that little boy or girl who throws swords in the house!!

I think kids will love the brothers in this book, who try not to be too naughty in their imaginative fun, and try to put things right as best they can. Real fun, and real family, too!

For beginning readers, this story about the troubles Arthur and Lance get into when their jousting (on cows) ruins their mother's daffodils just before the flower judges come, combines an interesting story line, challenging (but accessible) vocabulary, age-appropriate humor and delightful pictures. A lot of fun.

If your kids haven't started reading Edgar and Ellen yet, they will. This is my favorite of a fun series. Every book seems to get better and better. This book features most of the classic elements of the series: The wacky characters, the riddles, the snarky dialog, and of course the pranks. I am so glad my God sisters found these books, not just because she loved them but also because I loved reading them with her.

I have found this series a wonderful series for kids, especially those from 8-12 years old. Each of the books are quickly read and have about 25-30 short chapters that keeps the pace moving right along. In Nod's Limbs it's a race against the Knightleigh family to solve riddles to the location of the treasure of the town, Nod's golden limbs. It's exciting fun all in footie pajamas.

Great series for little boys...

Getting my son to read is worse than pulling teeth, however, when we picked up this series, he won't put the book down till he's finished! The books have about 25-30 small chapters, which makes it easy to read for those small attention spans. And his sense of pride and accomplishment is evident with the fact that HE read a 30 chapter book! I definatly recommend all of these books.

We just received this lovely book about three very different peas in a pod. After lots of cootchy-cooing from mummy and her friends and all of the samey-samey stuff that triplets often receive sweet pea, snap pea and snow pea break away and have fantastic adventures. This beautifully illustrated tale celebrates individuality, especially for multiples. We plan to donate a copy to our school library when our triplets are a bit older!

A celebration of individuality and sibling harmony that I recommend wholeheartedly. The illustrations are breezy and beautiful too.

Pictures in the dark is about two girls named Charlie and Sarah that have a horrible mother. They don't eat regularly, take showers regularly they can't even go to the bathroom at night because the flushing of the toilet will wake their mom up. Charlie has a boyfriend named Jesse who she really loves. Sarah is afraid that Charlie will run off with Jesse and leave her with her nasty mother. Then, something dramatic happens to Charlie and Sarah, and their lives are never the same. I would definitely recommend this book; it was awesome. The way its written makes you want to keep reading and reading. I'm not a big reader but this book captured me. You will also love this book if you have read A Child Called It. They're about kids going through a tough time in their lives.

This thoughtfully written story tells of the pains of growing up with a family that has a problem they are not willing to face, having a mother that needs mental assisitance. However, sisters Sarah and Carlie manage to make their lives bearable. But when their mother beats Carlie for trying on her dress, and she runs away, Sarah realizes she needs to release the truth to her father and the people she loves. Make sure you don't miss out on this remarkable story!!

I am a firm believer that some books are lifesavers. This is one. Patricia McCord's "Pictures in the Dark" is an unsentimental, but moving depiction of how two sisters, one twelve, the other fifteen, endure their mother's madness. Set in the 1950s, when mental illness was more stigmatized and misunderstood, this is about a family that keeps bad secrets. The writing is spare and taut and the suspense will keep older children and teenagers turning the pages. This is a courageous and daring book that deserves a wide readership.

I checked this book from my public library without knowing what it was. It is now one of my two-year old's favorite bedtime books!

What I find most endearing about this book is how it captures the essence of the modern family: Chaotic dinnertime, picky eaters, the lure of TV & fast food, and Dad's failed attempts at making a traditional dinner. The compromise is everybody's favorite: pizza!

If you are a modern family you will see a bit of your own selves and your children in this whimsical book.

Lucy, Joe and Bert want pizza for dinner and their parents just want peace and quiet: can they all enjoy a meal at the same table? When father decides to cook, his food turns out great but the kittens create even more chaos when they face foods they don't like. Pizza Kittens is a fun story!

Whimsical yet realistic, honest yet caring and tender

This is a WONDERFUL book, full of compassion and humor. If you don't like cats, don't let that stop you from reading this book! The illustrations are artful and appropriately madcap, capturing exactly the mood of the mealtime exploits of the family. Bright colors and expressiveness draw you into the story. And it is a story to which all families can relate: Kids can be trouble at the dinner table. The author helps us see that they don't mean any true harm or are not out to spite their parents; they are kids being kids.

What I loved most about the book is the fact that, after an initial dinner disaster (where parent and kitten ideas of what's good for dinner are as different as night and day) -- and it IS a disaster -- the kittens are not scolded or severely punished; instead, they are apologetic and everyone agrees to try again. The next time around compromise is used, and the result, while not a page from Better Homes & Gardens, is, as Bert the kitten says: "ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!" The key: It's not truly "perfect" in that everyone behaves and whatnot, but that everyone is satisfied with the outcome.

This book communicates love, tenderness and caring. The author does a wonderful job of showing us how we can relate to each other -- whether as family members or as neighbors or as strangers -- in a way full of respect and love. It is the willingness to try again despite trying circumstances that arises out of love that comes shining through in this wonderful picture book. And adults, check out the telling humorous details such as the LARGE ketchup bottle, or the color of the drink in Bert's glass at the end of the book (it too signals compromise). Enjoy!

This is a charming book to read aloud to children...as much fun for the adult as for the child. It reminds me of Where the Wild Things Are in its use of language- every line is quotable. I am, in the words of Poinsettia herself, "a pig in bliss", every time I read this gem.

This a Wonderful, Charming book -- a perfect children's book with wonderful drawings and text. Poinsetta has many brothers and sisters, and all she wants is a quiet place to read. All her favorite spots, from the window seat with the "buttery leather," to the rock in the yard are occupied with a sibling. As the story continues, Poinsetta discovers the little things that make her happy, and then how much her family means to her. Look for another book about Poinsetta and her family, "Poinsetta and the Firefighters."

Our family loved this book so much that we ended up buying a copy -- too bad the hard cover is not in print!

Poinsettia wants to curl up with her favorite book but all of the best places are being used by her many brothers and sisters. She thinks there is not enough room in their house until she is left home alone all day. By the time everyone returns, Poinsettia has decided her family and their house is just right. The author, Felicia Bond, has created charming illustrations and amusing characters. She uses wonderfully vivid description, "If the sun was coming in the window just right, it would spread like warm butter across the pages of her book." At 32 pages it would be an excellant book for reading aloud to younger children.

Do you want a book about kids, parents, and how much they love each other, along with being a good citizen, then this is the book for you. Felicia Bond (who is well known for the drawings in the book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie (If You Give...)and many other books, has created a wonderful story with charming drawings, and engaging characters. This is a continuation of a book about Poinsettia and her large family, Poinsettia & her family which has my favorite line in any children's book..."I'm a pig in bliss!" as Poinsettia soaks in a bathtub. You and and your kids will read this over and over again.

This is a wonderful book with an uncomplicated plot.It is the age old story of the futility and suffering of war with a distinct potato flavor. Potatoes Potatoes is worth a look for the illustrations alone, intricate tapestiries capturing the period. Each detailed page is a stand alone work of art.
The message here is not necessarily profound, but it is powerful and moving.

I remember loving this look when I was little...it was a favorite of all my siblings as well, and we would often take it out from the library. I don't want to reveal too much of the plot, but it's the story of a family that always eats potatoes at every meal. The two sons get sick of their lives working in the potato fields and each runs off to join an army...two different armies that must eventually fight each other. That's all I'll say about the plot, but I remember liking the drawings and the anti-war ending. I hope you can find a copy of this wonderful children's book!
