2 women with spunk, humor and caracter go west to make their fortunes. Each chapter is a self-contained story that has good dialogue, character and keeps you laughing. My 6 year old daughter loves these stories.

My seven year old daughter has had this book for a year and loves it. I started reading it to her and now she reads it herself; its one of her favorites. The characters of the two sisters are easy for her to identify with and she finds the stories very funny. Her favorite chapter is about the sisters competing for the princess role in a proposed play, The Princess and the Troll.

My wife and I recently took our 3rd grade daughter on a trip to Grand Canyon and Zion National Parks. We found 2 of the "Parkers" books in the Zion Visitor's Center and got them for our daugher. After she finished the first book, she very excitedly came to her mother and I to tell us about how good it was!!! Very high praise indeed...She also informed us that this author should be one that her school invites to their annual Literacy Festival where the school invites a couple of authors in with their works to speak to the kids. The school principal let me know this is the first time a kid has suggested a particular author. High praise indeed.

I have been talking about hiking the Grand Canyon with my 9 year old gradson. (His mom did the hike with me when she was nine) This book is great in it's detail about what adults and youngsters both see and experience when doing the hike. What children imagine the hike is like and what actually transpires are not exactly the same. It's not as easy as they imagine! But the rewards are worth the effort!

I am an elementary librarian and discovered this book probably 8 years ago. We had
had only 1 copy, so I am buying more here! We call it one of our "grandfather stories,"
because 2 grandchildren sit spellbound listening to their grandfather tell at tale of his childhood. My K-4th graders sit spellbound too, even though they of course know what is going to happen! When the pumpkin bounces down the 24 steps...everyone is ready with the SPLAT!! New listeners are thrilled, old listeners rate this as an October story we cannot listen without!....I want this one back in print for children of this new century!!

THIS IS SUCH A WARM, NOSTALGIC BOOK THAT TAKES YOU BACK TO YOUR GRANDMOTHER'S STORIES OF GROWING UP. THE PICTURES ARE DONE IN WARM COLORS - JUST PERFECT FOR A FROSTY DAY'S READING. IT SHOWS THE UNDERLYING LOVE OF A BROTHER AND SISTER THAT ONE ONLY REALIZES AS YOU GROW.

Great for teaching writing!

This book is a great tool to teach elements of writing. It includes great onomatopoeia, hyperbole, and fantastic descriptive language. It kept my 2nd grade students engaged and would be excellent for upper grades as well. It is also open-ended and has a great opportunity for a writing extension.

I'm astonished that I'm the first to review this outstanding children's book! Never having heard of the author before, I came across a copy in our local library and took it out to read to my visiting god-daughter. We had a good time reading and discussing it and considered it far above the average in present-day children's books. Although the author deals with serious and even tragic topics, she does so with great sensitivity and with humour. We rolled with laughter at some of the scenes. The serious side of things led to interesting discussions about life, and I appreciated Julie Johnston's courage in presenting such topics for children to consider, in a context which was not too difficult for them to digest. My god-daughter still likes to talk about the time we read this book and how much she enjoyed it.

Since reading this book, I have read Adam and Eve and Pinch Me, which I also enjoyed, but not as much as Hero of Lesser Causes.

Never having heard of the author before, I came across a copy of this book in our local library and took it out to read to my eleven-year old, visiting god-daughter. We had a good time reading and discussing it and considered it far above the average in present-day children's books. Although the author deals with serious and even tragic topics, she does so with great sensitivity and with humour. We rolled with laughter at some of the scenes. My god-daughter still likes to talk about the time we read this book and how much she enjoyed it.

Since then, I have read Adam and Eve and Pinch Me, by the same author, which I also enjoyed, but not as much as Hero of Lesser Causes.

This book is beautifully written & illustrated. Every child with a sibling will identify with this book--and so will their parents! It sends a great message, too. Best of all, "Hugs and Kisses" shows profound wit and characterization that's lacking in many modern kids' books.

I bought this book when I first found out I was pregnant. Even though I have little boys, I still read it to them! They love the gorgeous illustrations as well as the story line!

Children always wonder if their mom loves their brother/sister more than themselves. This is a beautifully illustrated and lyrical story that shows how encompassing a mother's love really is!

Oliver and Emily have a contest to see who Victoria Rose, their mother, loves the most. And the outcome is not a big surprise to the reader but it is a lovely story!

This is one of my favorite books to read! I highly recommend this one to everyone!

This may be my favorite of the Golly Sisters books -- but how can you choose?? Each of the tales is utterly captivating in its own clever way. The first time I read this book to my little sister, one of the illustrations struck me as so hilarious that I couldn't go on reading; I was rolling on the floor laughing for a good 5 minutes! (It was in "Rose Does the High-Wire Waltz" when May-May is helping her climb down the tree.) Told with simple words but a sure and sophisticated wit, these stories delight time and again.

Easy to read and for small kids to comprehend when it is read to them. My 2 and 3 year olds love it. It is easy to read because it takes such a simple perspective on things like a child, not because it is dumbified so it only uses easy words. Gives children something that is easy to read and a classic. It has wonderful wit and charm. Adults as well as children can relate to the Golly sisters. I would put it up with wonderful books like Dr. Suess and Sandra Boynton.

Michelle is taking horse back riding lessons and loves it!Michelle is trying to save a pony from being sent to New York City and Michelle thinks he is so cute that she hides him in an old barn where no one could find him . Her older siser is only there to ask a boy who works there on a date. I like michelle better then her sister and anyway it is a Marykate and Ashely book.

I bought it for my cousin's 10th birthday in a couple months, but I just had to read it first. Reminds me of the TV episodes. While Michelle is trying to save a pony, Stephanie is trying to impress a stablehand at the stables where Michelle rides. The two stories mingle nicely; it's neat how the author has the chapters go back and forth from Michelle and Stephanie's point of view. One thing I noticed is that not all the Full House characters appear. While at first I would have liked for all to appear, as I read that didn't matter to me, it was still great. I imagine the author only used certain ones so as not to confuse those who have never watched the show. When my cousin gets older and has web privileges I'll be interested to see how she rates it. She enjoys Full House but this will be the first of the books she's gotten. I chose this one because she's wild about horses.

It's has been very difficult trying to find books for my twin 8yr old daughters.

I wanted a series of books with the star character being an African American girl just having fun and doing kid stuff. A book that will make them know that reading is fun. This book does just that and more.

I only wish that there were more of them because I already bought them all.

If you're looking for a great chapter book for an African American girl, then author Valerie Wilson Wesley's series of "Willimena Rules" is it.

Also try, Gloria Rising and Gloria's Way by Ann Cameron.

Willimena is the top seller of Girl Scout cookies in her troop, but has spent her cookie money. She thought that she was doing a good thing using the money to buy her poor friends lunch each day, but now she has to come up with the money she owes the Girl Scouts. She tryes to make money with a lemonade stand and having a pet show, but each is a laughable failed attempt. She realizes what she has to do and fesses up.
I really like how Valerie Wesley uses the Girl Scout law to provide a rationale for Willimena'a actions. This book is very well written for girls that are in elementary school and involved with the Girl Scout program. I really enjoyed this book and the ways that Willimena tries to make up the money she spent. It is soemthing every girl her age would think to do. I have done some of the same projects myself when I was about her age. It really is a book that even I could relate to and I'm sure that any girl involved in Girl Scouts would also enjoy.

A beautiful childrens picture book that touches on a subject many of us don't like to talk about, a child's death. This books is sensitive and original in its form. The message of hope, love, and faith helps the child who is reading it to understand that it is okay to feel the way they feel. This book helps to open the door for further discussion on this sensitive topic. The author approaches this subject through the eyes of a child, in language and illustrations that they can relate to. There is no other book like this that completely is focused on the child and their struggles with the death of another child.

Great for the older sibling of a younger child that dies.

Shelby is older and likes to have her space, but when Brittany gets sick with cancer, Shelby realizes how precious her sister is to her. Like most kids ages 8-12, Shelby wanted to do big kid stuff and not let Brittany who is younger, hang around her or give her hugs and kisses. The flow is wonderful and the message of hope is ideal. The main message of this books is that Shelby now loves to give and receive hugs and kisses from her family, because her sister Brittany taught her that even in death everytime she gives hugs and kisses on earth, she is giving Brittany hugs and kisses in heaven too!
I also want to add: The visual instance of Brittany being accepted by Jesus is very emotional, and helps the child who is reading this book, to see the actuality of Brittany in Heaven with Jesus.

The book Hurricane by David Wiesner was an excellent book. It teaches children that you don't have to always have the new hi-tech toys to have fun. All you need is your imagination. I would recommend this book to all ages. It was about 2 brothers who are waiting for a large hurricane to arrive in their town. When the storm finally hits both of the boys get really scared. After the hurricane lets up and is over the boys notice that there is a large tree that fell down right next to their house. It wasn't their tree it was the neighbors but they decided to play on it one day because they were extremely bored. They played on the tree so much that it became their little adventure world. They would spend as much time as they could with that tree. They felt safe and protected when they would play. But one morning the boys awoke to the sound of chainsaws and axes hacking away at what sounded like... A TREE!!! Could it have been their tree???

Excellent book about two great boys who lived through a terrible hurricane and almost fell in love with a tree. It had a little sadness and happiness. Great illustrations! One of the best children's books I have ever read! The two boys showed a bunch of love for the tree, unfortunately, it would go in the end. Overall, an excellent book for all ages!!!!!!
