Daniel's Ride is an exellent book for children. I should know because I am a child. I think this is a good book because people usually don't write about lowriders or books for kids who are bilingual. This book has both of those subjects.

The artwork is perfectly suited to the entertaining story

In Michael Perry's entertaining picturebook Daniel's Ride, it's the first day of summer vacation and young Daniel is anxiously awaiting the arrival of his big brother Hector and his custom '63 Impala Low Rider. The two bothers cruise the boulevard, compete in a low rider hopping context at the beach, and drive downtown to visit their artist cousin Diego as he paints an elaborate mural. It is during this wonderful day's journey that Daniel receives an unexpected gift from his big brother -- determination. Lee Ballard's artwork is perfectly suited to Perry's entertaining story of two brothers, a car, and a beautiful sunny day.

This is a wonderful story for kids, and adults, about low riders, a subject that is often misunderstood and maligned. Not much is availibale for children on the topic, especially told from their point of view. DANIEL'S RIDE is about much more than Hector's promise of his cool car to his little brother Daniel. It's about hopes and dreams and relationships, all of which lead to the story's broad appeal. Every year I buy a least one book for a friend in Arizona who is a reading specialist working in a bilingual setting. This book has been the biggest hit yet! Her students in Tucson love it and can't get enough of it. Perry and his illustrator Lee Ballard have a real hit here!

Daniel eagerly awaits a promised ride in his older brother Hector '63 Impala convertible “complete with spider hydraulics and gold wire wheels.” Together they celebrate the first weekend of summer vacation. They turn up the volume on their music and cruise, transforming the Impala into “a funky barrio carnival ride.” They join the cool cars cruising the beech before visiting the cousin. When the ride is over, Hector promise the car to Daniel if he finishes high school and plans to go to college.

Author Michael Perry brings his street-savvy writing style to children’s books in DANIEL’S RIDE. With the lyricism gained with his musical background, and an intense understanding of what motivates children, Perry creates a fun, hotrodding tale of sun, brothers and cars certain to delight young readers. Crisp, believable, readable dialog combine lends the story vibrant energy and promise. Very highly recommended.

I read these books with my 3 (soon to be 4) year old daughter. Even though she is a little young to understand the story in its entirety, she loves the bright colors and the expressions of the characters. She's facinated by the concept of a world built around books, and shows genuine concern when one of the books faces a mishap. These are great books with moral guidance that works for everyone, no matter your background or beliefs.

These books are so colorful and a joy to read and I'm sure any child would enjoy reading or have the books read to them. The beautiful and fun illustration add so much to the wonderful story lines. I was intrigued with the "book people" and the idea of their messages. I thought these might be good for my grandchildren and other children I buy for. Before buying Children's books, I like to read them. These books have bright, vivid colors and are ideal for children. They are creative and well-written with an impressive use of a variety of verbs that will be challenging, and, therefore, an excellent learning tool. There are analogies that children can relate to, and humor that will be enjoyed by adults as well as children. Although many children will read these without assistance, I think they are good books for parents to read to younger children as well. I am now purchasing a set for my youngest grandson to take to school as a gift to his class. I am excited about the series and can't wait to see more!!

The Dooley Family is a very educational and informational book. It is the small child's guideline to getting along with siblings. The pictures are very original and the activity at the back of the book is just wonderful for the child who wants to learn and play at the same time. Fill in the blanks is a good way to stimulate the young mind and enhances memory of what has been read. This is a clever and fun way for parents to teach their children family values and how to get along with each other.

This was a very quick and easy to read book. Actually after I read it to my grandkids, the 8 year old then read it to his brother. It was appealing to my grandkids especially the 5 year old. It is an eye catching book because it is so colorful and the texture of the pages appealed to them. They also liked the moral of the book. I as the grandmother am often trying to settle disputes between the two of them.. I have found that this book is very helpful. I keep it visible in their room on each visit.

This book threw me into a laughing fit when I read it to Max in the children's books section of one of the large bookshops in Singapore (the perfect refuge on week-ends during the rainy winter season). Max is two and a half years old, and he is very tolerant of his dad's monkeying around. To judge by the looks I got when I guffawed, it seems that most parents regard reading children's books as a serious matter.

Anyway, kids have a great sense of humor, and they will enjoy it when you chuckle while reading this book to them. The little monkeys of the title are five clumsy but well-intentioned, lovable creatures that mess up the house while trying to please their mom. That is probably what happens to many two or three-year-olds who hope to do the right thing and end up spilling the milk when they try to assist mom. Enthusiasm combined with clumsiness can produce some rather chaotic results. "Five Little Monkeys with Nothing to Do" teaches parents and kids to see the funny side in such mishaps.

Recommended for parents and children alike.

A classic children's book that has truly stood the test of time. I loved this book 50 years ago as I shared the adventure of three little girls baking a birthday cake for their Mom. The prose is clear and simple and poetic with the rhyming names. The detailed, colorful illustrations capture the interest of readers and non-readers alike. I am delighted that it has been reprinted (and the whole series) so that I can read it to my granddaughters.

Flicka, Ricka and Dicka, the three Swedish girls, are trying to decide what to get for their mother's birthday. Father says it should be something the make themselves. An Aunt suggests that they bake a cake and she has just the recipe.

The Girls shop for the ingredients, mix the cake, clean the kitchen and go out to play for a few minutes. But they play too long and the cake is burned. The girls must make another one. Once the cake is made and decorated, the girls and their father give the mother a memorable birthday.

Another fine book by Maj Lindman and it teaches the importance of paying attention when doing a job. Each pair of pages has the story on one side and a painted illustration on the other. Read all of the Flicka Ricka Dicka books (and check out Snipp Snapp and Snurr).

The underlying messages in all the Flicka, Ricka and Dicka books (as well as the Snipp, Snapp, Snurr stories) encourage kindness to others and responsiblity. Not inspiring literature but a great book about somthing young children are interested in.

Forever Rose is a delightful read, just like the rest of the series.

Rose, now aged eleven, is growing up, but she is still as charming as ever. With her two best mates, bold Kiran and (((boring))) Mollipop, they enjoy little adventures while trying to outwit the dreadful Mr. Spencer.

Indigo is trying is best to befriend the troubled David and find a space for his cumbersome drumset. And Saffron and Sarah are as busy as ever with extra Spanish.

Eve is spending more time than ever in her garden shed fighting off her relentless illness and forgetting that Christmas is only a few weeks away.

Which is what Rose keeps trying to remind everyone of. Will there be Christmas in the Casson house?

Caddy hasn't been heard from. What surprise is she hiding? And is it the reason that Michael won't talk to Rose?

And what of Darling Bill? Will he finally come home to stay?

This last novel in the Casson series ended perfectly. My only complaint is that it is the last one. I'll miss being a part of the Casson family!

The final installment in the popular, award-winning series about the Casson family and assorted friends stars and is narrated by its craziest (among eccentrics), youngest and most endearing character, Rose.

Artistic, volatile Rosey Pose is unappreciated at school by an unimaginative teacher and lonely at home in a house that used to feel too small.

Where has everyone gone? Plus, she doesn't read and certainly doesn't care for the books people keep putting under her nose.

Rose and her best friend Kiran do go along with a scheme to spend the night in the arctic foxes' shed at the zoo.

Who finds Rose? Her own missing and beloved oldest sister, Caddy. Caddy has a surprise of her own, one that will bring all these quirky characters together for a most satisfying conclusion. Oh -- and Rose discovers the joy of reading all on her own. Rosey Pose, your readers love you!

I love these books almost beyond words. They are written in such an amazingly sweet, funny and eccentric way that, like Harry Potter, it's nearly impossible to put them down. Forever Rose is the fifth and final book in Hilary McKay's acclaimed series, the others being "Saffy's Angel", "Indigo's Star", "Permanent Rose" and "Caddy Ever After." Regardless of the title of the previous book, the last three have really been about Rose, who is, in my opinion, doubtlessly the most endearing character in the series.

The story centers around Rose Casson, who I believe is now in fifth or possibly sixth grade (Year Six in England). Her siblings (Cadmium, Saffron and Indigo -- the children's artist parents named them after colors) seem oddly busy, Caddy being the exception, as she has gone missing, and don't have much time for Rose. Her new teacher is nasty and self-absorbed, her father comes home even less than usual, and her mother is, as always, very absent-minded. But Rose finds things to do (as she always does!) with her friends Kiran (wild with wilder ideas) and Molly (boring). The three come up with an amazingly daring plan -- although possibly not for Rose, for whom nothing is too much.

Caddy's surprising news highlights the eccentricity of the series, and, as expected, all the loose ends do get tied up -- and definitely in a way that makes you laugh, cry and feel like writing Hilary McKay a letter of protest for ending her series, which, by the way, I very nearly did. I'll stop writing this review before I reveal too much. But read Forever Rose. It's definitely worth it. And if this is your first time with the Casson family? Go back to the beginning and buy "Saffy's Angel".

Simply Wonderful

Okay, you should know that all things considered, I invariably choose fantasy over contemporary realism, and I can usually keep my head when reviewing and not gush. BUT--Hilary McKay's five books about the Casson family are among my all-time favorites. EVER. I LOVE the delicate blend of humor and truth and trouble and compassion in every one of these books. The characters are so quirky and likable and real--not only the Casson kids and their rather odd parents, but secondary characters such as David and Sarah, as well. In this last volume, even the various school teachers shine in their brief cameos--and the bits about the first grade Nativity play are the funniest thing since The Best Christmas Pageant Ever!

I ordered Forever Rose the second I saw it was available and opened it up with bone-deep joy, then had one of those minor panic attacks that can sweep down upon avid readers: "What if it's not as good as I think it will be? As good as I want it to be?" But it was. In this book, the youngest Casson, Rose, is grumping her way through a pre-Christmas season beleaguered by a mother with an endless cold, a truly awful sixth grade teacher, and siblings who are clearly growing up and away and leaving her behind. Among other things. Like--how might someone get away with spending the night at the zoo? (In the arctic foxes' shed, of course. The foxes are apparently out of town.)

I do strongly recommend you read all of the books in order, since you'll enjoy this one far more if you do. I mean, I imagine you can still have a good read without doing that; I just wouldn't recommend it.

There is an air of magical realism about McKay's Casson books, even though there isn't a scrap of actual magic in them. (The main character does have some interesting things to say about fairy tales in Forever Rose.) I personally find real life--the people and words and sights and sounds of it--magical in its own right. McKay somehow manages to capture that world-faith/world-joy in her Casson books. It's also quite an accomplishment to write such hopeful books about life and family without being the least bit didactic.

I'm just so happy today, having spent some time with the Casson family again. Thank you VERY much, Hilary McKay!

Perfect, perfect, perfect. This book is brilliant; the perfect ending to this series. I adored the first two books in this series, was disappointed in Permanent Rose (what was the deal with Rose's father anyway), and felt hopeful with Caddy Ever After. However, in Forever Rose, the Casson family is back with all their eccentricity, humor and warmth. McKay takes all of the loose ends (Caddy and Michael) and ties them together. Very satisfactory.

If you love the B.F.G by Roald dahl, if you like stories about "little people" like The Borrowers and The Littles, if you are in search of a great read aloud for your seven year old, this is the book to choose! As you know, there are no such things as giants, and the giants tell their children there are no such things as beanstalks or iggly plops. Or are there?

The Giants and the Joneses begins where Jack and the Beanstalk leaves off. In our time, the Giants of the land of Groil still tell the story of "Jack and the Beanstalk." But no one really believes in the "Iggly Plops" or the Little People. No one except an eight-year old giant named Jumbeelia. Jumbeelia drops a bean over the edge of Groil and the next day she climbs down a giant beanstalk where she collects a few new toys - including the three Jones children.

This is a fun story with the added challenge of a make-believe giant language to decode. (A dictionary is included.) The story does get a little scary when Jumbeelia's brother captures the Jones children and mistreats them, but this shouldn't be enough to put most children off. In addition, this story may lead readers to contemplate sibling relationships, treatment of smaller, helpless creatures, and whether there may be truth in legends.

Totally engaging

My girls - 5 and 8 - love this book. I read it to them three months ago and we still talk about "igglyplops" and "bealy" things. The story is compelling -- three kids in a world of giants. The giants have their own language, but kids can identify with the giant childrens' normal everyday lives. There's an imagined world, suspense, and siblings who grow to love one another -- who could ask for anything else?

I dont know what to say it was great. I just finshed reading it so its still fresh in my mind. The one thing I can say is Naylor better make another!! If you raed the frist three books you must read this one. The whole book is great but what i reall want to read is one where the Benson's move back but the Mollys find a house in that same place that would be great. Like I said this is a must read!!

Fast pased, exciting, very, very enjoyable!

Having read the other three books in this series I was delighted to find this installment. Naylor's plot twists are unpredictable, yet belivable. Her hints about an upcomming relationship between Beth and Josh will draw mixed reactions from readers, but all will eagerly read on to find out what will develop. Funny, fun, fabulous reading!

The Girls' Revenge is a really good book. I like the way Phyllis Reynolds Naylor can continue this series to the fourth book without having the excitement or comedy drag. I especially liked the fact that Peter keeps going over to the enemy camp, much to his brothers' anger and embarassment. I would recommend this book to any Phyllis Reynolds Naylor fan.
