The book does address significant managerial errors in judgment. However, the book actually draws attention to ethical reasoning in psychoanalytic terms and concepts. Principals, precepts, and concepts are really old issues brought back from the 1990's into the here and now of 2004. These errors in judgment are perpetuated from generation to generation. Little has changed in the eight years since the book was published, especially in some medical institutions and in universities that host medical training programs. The ethical questions continue to be unaddressed and the consequential conflicts unresolved.

Nice Little Overview
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-01
I honestly think that there is such a vast difference between Depression and Bipolar Disorder, I think they should have just gone ahead and printed two separate books.

This book is well-written and easy to read, and short. It provides a quick overview of what these illnesses are, warning signs, an overview of treatments, and getting accommodations at school.

I liked the short stories from parents about real-life kids with these disorders, and I liked the one line tipes and summaries on every couple pages, offset in the margins.

I was rather shocked that in the short section on dietary supplements they only mention SAM-e and St. John's Wort without mentioning Omega-3 Fatty Acids which HAVE been proven to be of help. It was even mentioned as using as an adjunct with lithium.

There also wasn't any emphasis on "sleep hygiene" which is always touted as being so important to success.

It is far from a "Bible" of adolescent Depression or Bipolar Disorder, but as I said, it is a nice little overview.

The Image Of God And The Psychology Of Religion

Excellent Compilation of Research, Theory, and Practice
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-08
Clinicians who work with religious clientele often hear narratives about the part that God plays in clients' lives. This emotional role that God plays is known as the God image. Sometimes God is more central, other times at the periphery, but usually important. Clinicians often want to address this area in treatment, but they have few resources available to help them make sense of clients' God images.

Richard Dayringer and David Oler have compiled a compendium of works to help shed light on God image work. The majority of the book is comprised of interesting empirical studies. Two chapters explore the largely unchartered territory of the God image and severe mental illness. Another study addresses gender role identity and the God image. A fourth empirical contribution discusses the formation of adolescents' God images. The other chapters are smart, philosophical, reviews of the God image construct that have implications for pastoral counseling and other forms of clinical work.

A central theme that runs loosely through The Image of God and the Psychology of Religion is an openness to understanding the different ways of experiencing God. Authors are careful to not limit the experience of God to any one tradition. Similarly, they advocate closely following the client's own understanding of God as a resource in pastoral counseling. This flexibility takes place in the context of larger theoretical frameworks. Several chapters provide ways of making sense of and conceptualizing the God image. Psychoanalytic and psychodynamic approaches are clearly described with a particular emphasis on projection theory and object relations. Similarly, attachment theory is discussed and empirically evaluated. Finally, behavioral or socialization theories along with cognitive consistency paradigms are also covered.

One limitation of The Image of God and the Psychology of Religion is that some of the chapters are loosely connected to one another. This is often a complaint of compilation works and maybe even more so of this work because it was co-published as a special series in the American Journal of Pastoral Counseling, Volume 7, November 2004. Regardless, however, the editors were clear that their intention was to provide a variety of voices and perspectives - some of which more closely relate to certain contributions than others.

Overall, however, Dayringer and Oler have provided a welcome addition to the God image literature. The contributors have covered fresh ground and added to other areas that were only lightly explored. Readers will find empirical support to help them better understand how certain populations understand and experience God. They will also find rich narratives that capture the complexities of God image work.

This is a great book from a great series of books. I highly suggest it to all couples. Regardless of whether you have a fairy tale marriage or your marriage is on the rocks, this study meets everyone right where they are and gives practical advice to improve oneness in marriage. I cannot say enough good things about this book or the Homebuilders series! You must experience it and its life-changing lessons for yourself. My husband and I have never been happier or more on the same page than after completing these exercises. Don't take my word for it, see for yourself! You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!

This is not a bad introduction to the Internet for doctors. The best part is the extensive bibliography. I found the chapter on medical informatics particulary interesting.

Courtni C. Wright's Jumping the Broom is an excellent story, not only for children but adults as well. It gives children of all ages knowledge of how weddings can differ across cultures and across time. I found the book so throughly enjoyable that I mailed it to my older sister as a wedding gift!

A "How-To" For Early Childhood Standards With Great Layouts

Review Date: 2006-07-14
The layout makes this book stand out. Each chapter not only features an on-point discussion of a specified universal state standard (decoding, legibility, listening/communication, etc.) but also offers the most common practices that teachers utilize to meet that standard.

It enlightens both a beginning and veteran teacher.
