There is no definitive book on community. This may be because each author sees something unique, but it may be that community defies narrow definition, indeed, encompasses all of life's values and activities. What some call community is simply a neighborhood of people with little in common but geography. At the other extreme are cyber groups of individuals with only a common interest and the equipment to communicate with each other, yet they perceive themselves as a community. Co-author Ken Norwood was born in 1924, enjoyed a large family living throughout Southern California when each town was separate and distinct, served in WWII as part of a B-24 crew flying missions out of Britain, spent one year as a Nazi POW, became an architect-planner, worked in several intentional communities as carpenter-architect, founded the Shared Living Resource Center in Berkeley, California. So he has seen community from many perspectives. Co-author Kathleen Smith also chose the field of architecture, has traveled widely, has pursued a career in community design. Therefore this book focuses on the role of habitation in community. Most designs presented are for cities. The one chapter about rural community design is titled Rural Communities, the Romance and the Reality, which shows urban bias. But--country living advocate that I am--their material is inclusive and their arguments are sound. Country life is not for everybody--in truth, most Americans prefer to live in cities and suburbs and the current social and political climate favors and facilitates urban and suburban living. The anguish over loss of community has been expressed in a plethora of public polls. When community ceases, bureaucracy increases. Can citizens rebuild community and take back those parts of their lives that are now controlled by government ? The authors of this work go a long way in showing how that can be accomplished.

This collection of essays originaly broadcast in the Pastor To Pastor audio cassettes from Focus On The Family contains a wealth of insight from many of todays top ministry leaders. The scope of the book is broad covering everything from relationships, agendas for Spiritual Retreats, vision, and burnout. It is a great resourse for those starting out in ministry so they can learn from the mistakes and life experiences of others. It is also excellent for those that have been in ministry for decades but would like a refresher course in the basics that we often take for granted or simply forget within the context of the tyrany of the urgent. The essay By Bob Biehl on 10 questions to focus the rest of your life is alone worth the cost of the book. This is a work that needs to be reprinted.

Ms. English's work is well researched and innovative. She integrates the contributions of past theologans and original language interpretations of scripture, as well as her own thought-provoking conclusions, into a concise, readable, and applicable offering for anyone who has questions about the role of women in ministry, the church, and in our culture. I hope all pastors read Removing the Veil. I plan to buy a copy for my own pastor!

I bought this book a few years ago and it literally became a close friend in my life. It lifted me out of the darkest moments in my spiritual valley when I was caring for my two little ones, struggling with my role and responsibility in the church ministry, at the same time learning to be obedient to the Lord by embracing the circumstances around me. This book helped to deepen my relationship with the Lord and my commitement to serve Him faithfully.

This book is so down to earth and personal that reading it is turly like talking to a wonderful friend. Highly recommend it for a wife who is serving the Lord alongside her husband.

In addition to her work with CFM, Mrs. Lucey distinguished herself as a Board Member of the National Catholic Reporter for 25 years, and has always been an avid proponent of an International Peace Academy.
