A Must Have For All Parents
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-23
This book is a must have for all parents. There are so many interesting things you most likely have assumed that your children know but yet they do not. There are things in this book even you may not know. Knowing the parts of objects is very important in reading comprehension. There are many parts that can be called the same name. For example would your child know what a story was referring to if it said something about the bank of a river, or would they first think of the bank where you get money from, especially in this day and age. Don't miss out!

An Intimate Portrait and Deep Reflections
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-15
For a taste of this book, read the following paragraph from the author's preface:

"I am a male pastor, and I realize I have neglected my family because I failed to prioritize time with them and for them in my life as a minister. The Pastor's Family is the story of how I was compelled to face this neglect and do something about it."

It is immediately clear that this is not a dispassionate examination of the family life of ministers; it is the story and reflections of one minister told with deep-searching honesty. Langford does not claim to be perfect or know everything, but he has learned from many of his mistakes.

In addition, Langford's wife and two children tell the stories of their experience in their own words. Insights from psychology and scripture are also incorporated into the The Pastor's Family.

The following chapter headings give a sense of the book's scope:
1. "Where Is Dad?" "Where Is My Husband?"
2. The Experiences of Being a Pastor's Wife
3. Who is Going to Make the Coffee?
4. My PK's: Their Stories
5. The Bible, Nature, Human, and Church History: Warnings and Mandates for Family Nurture
6. Treasures in Family Discontent
7. The Pastor and Codependency: Coming to Terms with the Dark Side of the Call to Ministry
8. Setting Boundaries and Learning to Say "No": Benchmarks for Healthy Relationships Between the Pastor, His Family, and the Congregation
9. The Minister's Family Life: A Laboratory of Valuable Experience
10. Spiritual Formation: Giving and Receiving Prayer
11. Setbacks, Heartbreaks, and New Opportunities

Within each chapter, you will find a warts-and-all portrait of the family's experience and what the author has learned over time. The result is sometimes depressing, sometimes uplifting, but always enlightening.

Langford has been a nursing home social worker, public school teacher, and pastor/church planter (Southern Baptist and later American Baptist). Though his theological perspective is fairly different from my own, I am still giving the book five stars because it is simply outstanding.

One final note...the author does not attempt to generalize from his experience to families other than a male minister with a female spouse. However, I suspect that female ministers, same-sex partners, and co-minister partners would find much useful in the book as well.

Excellent practical help for busy pastors
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-23
I cannot imagine a more relavant book for busy pastors than this. There is condensed wisdom to be found here from those who have obviously wrestled with the many issues that face us these days. The editors asume that faithfulness to scripture regarding manhood and womanhood is itself 'leadership'. For this approach many will be grateful. A variety of experienced contributors provide more tham discussion. They lead us to practical help in every area tackled. Many under sheperds will receive much guidance contained in these pages. This and the companion volume 'Biblical Foundations for Manhood and Womanhood' are both essential reading for church leaders today.

Patient Resource is a MUST for All Cancer Patients & Families
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

This publication finally offers the world a one-stop, single source, easy to understand encyclopedia of information. From cancer treatment facilities to top docs, to treatment options to survivor stories, it's all right here. There is a vast amount of information presented on the internet, in libraries and from medical facilities - but nothing comes close to presenting in such a user-friendly format. I really recommend this directory to anyone fighting cancer.......or for a friend or family member. It gives you confidence that you are making the right choices, and is presented with absolute authority. The medical editor even states: "An informed and educated cancer patient will find a way to get better care......and live better and longer." I believe that is 110% true. We can fight cancer - and the power is in information. Even those of us who are healthy now would benefit by having a copy of Patient Resource in our home library. Can't say enough great things about this cancer guide. Thank you.

In The Peaceful Parenting Handbook, Burt Berlowe, Elizabeth Lonning, and Joseph Cress join forces to present parents with a practical, constructive, "user friendly" manual for raising children and resolving disciplinary issues in creative, non-violent, consistent, and effective ways. A wide range of issues are covered including getting up and dressed; mealtimes, personal hygiene, bedtime behavior, sibling problems, public behavior, attention seeking, peer relationships, aggression and fighting, general compliance, responsibility, neatness, the care of personal property, overcoming bad habits, lying, swearing, temper tantrums, fears and phobias, soiling, overdependency, eating disturbances, bed wetting, money usage, school attendance, underachievement, and more. The Peaceful Parenting Handbook is ideal reading for anyone who aspires to raise physically, mentally, emotionally healthy and well balanced children to eventually become effective, competent, compassionate, self-disciplined adults and parents in their own right.

FAILING TO SHARE THE PULPIT and OUR CALL
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-01
I just want to thank the author. I have personally experienced pastor's insensitivities of one of Korean presbyterian congregation in Huntsville Alabama. He is the only one to be preaching and afraid someone who knows more than he does. Calling him brother is insult to him. Calling Plymouth Brethren church cult because he is threatened by his only pastorship unlike biblical model of plurality of elders (pastors). He is not listening to congregation although he is not well read. Listening to only his supporters to stay on the job. Most of the time pastors are imported outside and his desires and finishing seminary qualify for pastorship instead of congregation and other five things mention in the book. It's time to check psycological condition of pastors like we do check astronauts.
