Fighting Urban Sprawl

This work should be of more than passing interest to those who more and more find themselves beset on every side by urban sprawl. The author sets out in many ways to preserve an old family homestead; but, more important, seeks ways to make the place profitable. His attempts are often hilarious, the more so when they fail, and they never lack meaning for others who share his feelings about the need for ways to protect ourselves from the menace of an urbanization that has rapidly got out of contol.

A guide to recovering and rebuilding after spousal loss.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1998-12-02
Written out of the author's personal experience after the death of his wife from liver cancer when he was 68, this very practical guide can be a valuable resource for others who find themselves in similar situations. Blum relates his own response to his grief, some of his early dating experiences, and the story of his courtship of the woman who helped him fulfill his late wife's request to their daughter ("Make sure Dad meets a nice lady someday."). He then describes several other widows and widowers as illustrative of different approaches to the subtitle of his book. The last two-thirds of "Life Is for the Living" is devoted to very specific advice about a number of issues facing those whose spouses die relatively late in life. Guidance is offered about whether to join a support group, how to meet people and get back into the dating scene, what to do on dates, how to deal with adult children, and how to handle religious differences and the touchy question of living together or marrying. Although not everyone will agree with Blum's views and advice, many will find his frank discussions and concrete suggestions helpful, and the good humor and openness to new experiences expressed throughout the book will be a real plus for those who are trying to recover from a loss that truly turns most people's live upside-down.

Excellent Resource and Beautifully Written

I was deeply involved in the creation of this edition, and I can say from experience that the authors have crafted a masterpiece. So much work, diligence, research, and love went into this revision. It is a great resource for family members of someone with Alzheimer's and related disorders, physician's and other practitioners, and even people who have been recently diagnosed. It can be used to educate someone who knows little about dementia or offer a new perspective to the experienced clinician. I highly recommend this book!

Enrich your understanding of how the disease affects victim

Review Date: 1998-08-22
This is a book caregivers can hand to relatives and friends to read in order to enrich their understanding of how the disease affects both the victim and their caregiver. It is not only informative in a very practical and easy to read manner but it is sensitive and to the point about the stages of Alzheimer's Disease and the human needs of the people who face this illness. The personal stories highlighted are described in ways that aren't merely words on paper written by someone safely detached from the impact this illness has on living people. This book stands out in my mind for that reason. It also speaks to the loss of relationships as the illness progresses. I refer to over and over and its one of the first I read after I realized my husband Tom and I were facing Alzheimer's Disease.

This book discusses women's spiritual and financial values.

Review Date: 1998-09-13
Jo Ann Lordahl's book offers a thought-provoking quotation for each day of the year, providing insights for women who are interested in personal growth and financial wellness. This book is relevant for all women in today's world. Each daily quote is paired with an inspirational affirmation, many of which are interwoven with wise and practical advise about money management. The overall message of this book is that women can and must create prosperity and financial security for themselves, improve their relationship with money, and learn to balance attitudes toward money with spiritual values. These intriguing daily readings guide the reader in looking at her own self, and in understanding her goals, values, motivations, strengths, and weaknesses as they apply to spending habits, earning potential, and financial worth.

In this book there is no emphasis on consumerism, greed, materialism, or conversely, poverty. The book includes no get-rich-quick schemes. It offers both enjoyable and beneficial reading for any woman who would like to get a new perspective on money and set some achievable financial goals.

I live in the midwest and have a hard time finding cookbooks that have more than a few recipes that are so good you want to make them a family favorite. This cookbook has so many great recipes, I used nothing other for my Christmas dinner! The ingredients are common, even in a small town you can get everything you need from the local market. The directions are so simple even the kids can help! The presentation is fabulous and the taste even better!

Freddy James, the main character, will 'tug' at your heart.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1999-07-07
Believable characters, setting, and plot for Georgia in 1947. Main characters are Freddy James Johnson, age 13; his mother-Elenora; and younger brother, Kenny Lee. Supporting characters are 'Big Kenny' - Freddy's father who deserts his family; Ms. Priddy (the town's owner & overseer of all); Theodora, the cook at the saloon; and Ms. Suzanna Doolittle, who gives French lessons to the more elite ladies of their society. It is humorous at times and oddly sad at others. Language & dialect are pure 'Southern'. The main plot consists of the fact that 'Big Kenny' Johnson leaves home one day and never returns. His oldest son, Freddy James-age 13, takes on the responsibility of keeping his family together and providing shelter and food. The best way he sees to do this is to move his Mother and brother to town. They all would rather stay on the family farm - after all its been in their family for generations; however, Freddy knows thats impossible. So, he goes off to town one day - not telling anyone where he is going - and finds a job at the local saloon doing odd jobs. As luck would have it, he finds a room to rent at Ms. Priddy's. To find out what lies ahead for Freddy James and his family, you'll need to read the book. I promise you won't be disappointed.

I loved this book! There are several reasons for my enthusiasm. It's setting is 1947 on a Georgia farm. I am a history 'buff' and have a rural background. I felt I could relate to Freddy James Johnson (age 13-Protagionist) situation. Freddy's father, Big Kenny, deserts his family and it is up to 13-year old Freddy James to try to keep his family together. Although they would all prefer to stay on the family farm - it is impossible. Freddy James goes into the local town on his own. He finds a job and a place to rent where he, his Mama and younger brother, Kenny Lee, can live. I can't tell you all the 'life situations' Freddy James faces as he tries to keep his family together. I will tell you, however, that he matures throughtout the story. It is a 'must read' for an English class or a History class focusing on this period of time. It will make you cry, laugh, and gain respect for Freddy James Johnson. In my opinion, it is realistic historical fiction at its best. Also, I forgot to mention - I read this book by audiocassette. If you've not tried a recorded book yet, then, it's time you gave it a try.

I am the mother of a rape victim. This book is a God sent. It gives you help in helping your loved one who is a victim of domestic violence. It comes with a CD with valuable forms to help protect the victims. I have never found any book so helpful as this one. In my daughters most dire time of need Susan has it all done for her. Very easy to navigate. A wonderful tool used to help victims of spousal rape and battery.
Do yourself and others a favor and buy this book. Susan shares her inside knowledge of the justice system.

This book is amazing. I taught 2 year olds for years and this was always a favorite. The pictures are simple and bright. It is a great teaching resource. I like to use it as a theme related book during PET week. It flows really well when read outloud. The kids call it the octopus book. If you are looking for a wonderful book to read outloud to your pre-schooler this one is it!

This book is a whole lot of fun.

"Can we keep him?" begs a pig-tailed little girl to her pipe-puffing pop. As familiar as this phrase is to millions of parents the world over, the object of her plea is not exactly pet material - a globulous green octopus. Her father's response let's us know that he has been down this road before, as he lists a panoply of pet predicaments that the winsome little lass has already subjected on her family.

The story unfolds in a well-cadenced rhyme that accompanies the off-the-wall illustrations. Yaccarino has a cool, geometric graphic style that evokes the early 1960s. This book is a whole lot of fun.

Susie Scheyder is a Lutheran Pastor's wife and mother to five children. She is also a gifted storyteller, who is able to give a vivid picture of how to handle all of life's challenges with humor, and grace and faith. Helping the reader to see God's hand in every little thing. I enjoyed the illustrations by her talented son Jacob as well. I hope to hear, and see, more from both of them real soon!

Susie Scheyder's "The Other Side of the Pulpit" is my favorite book of the year. I've read it several times, and purchased it for dozens of friends. I know they've loved it too, because they're now buying it to give as gifts. Susie Scheyder, a Lutheran Pastor's wife, and the mother of five children, puts her best food forward everyday, understanding the high public expectations of perfection for her family. She rolls with all punches giving everything her very best, and when something goes awry, as one can well imagine how it could, with five children and the hectic life she leads, she handles it with such grace and humor, that no reader can help but howl with laughter and recognition. Her honest, candid depictions of daily challenges give you a glimpse into a loving, lively and hilarious family, and help you relax, and see the cheerful blessings in your own daily foibles. I cannot wait for her next book!

James Schaap does the Christian Reformed Church - and any who would like to know her better - a wonderful service in this readable popularized history. From the opening you know Schaap loves the church, both his own denomination and the world-wide church. This is history from the inside, full of candor (sometimes uncomfortably so) and full of affection.

An honest, balanced history of the Christian Reformed Church

Schaap goes out of his way to provide a human, humane, and balanced portrait of the Christian Reformed Church, from its Dutch roots, through periods of schism and immigration, and on to the controversies of the 1990s. It's a warm, friendly portrait that doesn't gloss over divisive tendencies and perceived clannishness of this denomination founded by Dutch immigrants. As a student of Reformed church history, I find this volume incredibly accessibly, broad in scope, and a great help in understanding my people.
