I read this book from cover to cover and then went back to the beginning and read it again. I really enjoyed "The Cough" and "Migraine". I look forward to reading more of his work.

This is a wonderful book!

These are first-rate narratives, told by a beautiful poet. Their settings -- the anthracite coal region of the speaker's youth, or the PA countryside of his adulthood -- provide perfect backdrops for him to ruminate on the meaning of family life. Humes is a skillful poet, and these sometimes dark, but always tender narratives prove to be some of his best work to date. After reading them, one gets anxious to read his next collection, The Butterfly Effect, which is due out from Milkweed Editions as part of the National Poetry Series next year.

Advocacy
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-21
Kenneth Mottram wants pastors to be better advocates for their parishioners facing a medical crisis. So he explores what such advocacy should look like, and he explains ethical principles from biblical and medical perspectives.

Especially helpful is his five step procedure for making tough ethical decisions: 1) gather information; 2) clarify personal values; 3) clarify larger ethical principles; 4) prioritize acceptable options and make a decision; 5) evaluate the decision. Helpful, too, was his discussion of the "Five Wishes" approach to advance directives.

Mottram, a Baptist, writes from a conservative Protestant perspective, and his ideas may require adaptation for those in other traditions, for example, a priest working within a sacramental theology.

Overall, a useful book for clergy and for anyone caring for the ill or injured.

A Christian Distinctive for Facing Ethical Dilemmas

As a hospital chaplain Kenneth P. Mott ram, is faced with helping patients or their families face ethical questions during crisis situations, on a daily basis. "Caring for those in Crisis" is written to be a help pastors and church leaders to minister to those families.

New procedures in modern medicine and medical technology have created questions of medical ethics and resulting spiritual dilemmas for the Christian. These changes have often resulted in depersonalizing patient care. The role of the pastor takes on a new significance in counseling in these ethical areas. The book provides a model for making ethical decisions.

Mottram addresses issues such as organ transplants, living wills, and life support measures. Other issues such as self-determination, suicide, advance care planning and personal loss and grief are also considered in depth. Drawing from his own personal clinical experiences, Mottram uses actual stories of patients in crisis, the medical evaluation and recommendation, the response of the family, and the outcome of the decisions made.

I personally found the importance of patient advocacy to be particularly helpful in light of intervention on the part of the spiritual advocate.

"Caring for those in Crisis: Facing Ethical Dilemmas with Patients and Families" is an important, timely book. Pastors, counselors, and seminary students will benefit from Kenneth Mottram's insight and articulate presentation of principles for patient advocacy, and family counseling in light of health care evaluations in times of crisis.

Most pastors will be grateful for this book

"Weaver and his colleagues have produced another winner for clergy: a casebook which covers most of the difficult situations in which pastors are called upon to be a first, and sometimes primary, support and helper. Each case presentation is followed by critical issues to be aware of, relevant information, including community and national resources. Most pastors will be grateful for this book a number of times each year. Sections in the first chapter on the child's personality development and on effective parenting will be appreciated by most parents." --David K. Switzer, Emeritus Professor of Pastoral Care, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University

This is a superb book that will be of enormous use to those who must counsel families of troubled teens. These teens are a group of individuals who need acceptance, love, inspiration, and guidance. This book gives the counselor practical tools that are time tested to help families gently and wisely direct their teens onto a path of hope and success. The reading is fast and easy, filled with practical case studies that hold the reader's attention. It will also be useful for families of troubled youth to read, particularly if they are not already in counseling. I recommend this book without reservation.

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in science experiments and the scientific method. It is appropriate for any child grades k-12, with minor adaptations. The writing is clear, concise and accurate. Most of the experiments involve insects. Materials are inexpensive and easy to obtain. The book contains lists of suppliers and references. Data charts and tables are included and need only be copied by a teacher.

Will your deaf/hard-of-hearing child be a future Cue Kid?

Review Date: 2002-12-05
This is embarrassing...I'm the only person who's ever written a review for this book even after 4 years & 2 months have past. ...I've ed my e-mail since then. This book covers so much information about Cued Speech. It has stories from zillions of native cuers aka "Cue Kids". The stories speak for themselves. The book makes a fabulous resource to any parent of a deaf/hard-of-hearing child. Consider all of your options, read these countless success stories & choose Cued Speech for your child. If you get the book, you can read about some of my friends. Pages 480-487 is a touching story of one of my close friends. You'll probably relate to the trials, tribulations & sacrafices this family had to undergo to help the education of their child. Pages 602-607 is a cute story written by my friends' husband. Also check out pages 595-597; 626-628, 308-310. Each story is unique & touching & will make you feel better about choosing Cued Speech. I personally would recommend ASL for later use in the child's life. My friend from pages 595-597 advises future Cue Kids to "Embrace the deaf community by learning how to sign, but don't forget your roots, you wouldn't be where you are today without Cued Speech." If you would like more information about Cued Speech search the web for the National Cued Speech Association as well as the Maryland Cued Speech Association. Happy reading & happy cueing! =)

Excellent book to read if you know a deaf child.

The Cued Speech Resource Book for Parents of Deaf Children is an excellent book for anyone to read if you know a deaf child. I had the honor of meeting Dr. Orin Cornett, the Father of Cued Speech and Mary Elise Daisey, the first mother to use Cued Speech with a deaf child. Dr. Cornett is a very intelligent man. Cued Speech is a phenically based hand supplement to speech reading which makes spoken words visible and clear on the lips for deaf cue reader to understand better. Broaden your horizons and learn Cued Speech as well as American Sign Language. The two go hand in hand.

I purchased this book after seeing an interview with the author on Good Morning America last week. I have reason to suspect that my dad may be nearing the end of his driving career. After reading the Driving Dilemma, I feel much better about broaching this very delicate subject with my Dad. Dr. Dugan offers a very practical and conscientious way of evaluating driving skills. The premise of involving an older driver in the evaluation, discussion and decision making process is made easy with this reference guide.

If you're facing this challenge with a loved one, or know of someone who is - then reading this book will make an anxiety ridden process so much easier. I highly recommend this reference guide.

My mom got this book, and I saw her reading it, and wanted to check it out. It has some cool ideas. I liked the Dig Up the Past. My mom got a bunch of family pictures out, and then we sat around listiening to some really funny stories from the past. It really made us all laugh.

I think this is a good book to give families ideas, or maybe help remind them of ideas they have forgotten about.

I bought this book for a good friend of mine who is single. She had been looking in all the right places, but had trouble meeting Mister Right. She said she knew what she wanted in a guy, but she never really could verbalize her list. This book helped her create a real list of qualities she wanted in a man and I can't believe it, she is actually going out on high quality dates. I would imagine at this pace, she'll find Mister Right before long.

This Really Works!

I followed the plan in this book and voila! The best and most aptly suited man that I have ever dated "showed up".
I can't YET call him a life partner because it is really too early in the relationship, but this is really different. I feel an extraordinary compatibility - this feels healthy and right-finally!
It's pretty amazing to meet someone and re-visit the list and then figure your own thumbs up or thumbs down based on it.The list puts it right there in black and white so it eliminates "fooling" yourself.
Making the list and qualifying it makes a huge difference!
The author has an easy to follow style, injects plenty of fun and levity throughout, and utilizes interesting research. I recommend this for all singles!
